Title: Lonesome Tileset [ASCII, Square, 20x20]

Hi, everyone. Just wanted to share with you all my first tileset and give a little back to the community that I've gotten so much from.

I've always liked simple tilesets that beautify and clarify the ASCII look, and I think the gold standard of that is Lowright's wonderful Grim Fortress. It's been my stand-by for a long time. The only downside for me was its 12x12 size, so I set out to scale it up to 20x20.

This set is mainly based on Anikki's 20x20 tileset, which in turn is based off the work of Tocky and Plac1d. I used Lowright's low-opacity fill technique on certain ground tiles to wash out some of the contrast and improve readability. I swapped out some of the specialty tiles for my own creations, fancied up the font ever so slightly, and recreated the dwarf tiles to resemble those poor fools of Grim Fortress. Lastly, I called upon my drab New England sensibility to throw together a new color palette. I understand such muted tones aren't everyone's cup of tea, so I'll include the Grim Fortress palette, modified from Lee's Natural Color Scheme, both of which I've enjoyed for many hours.

Hopefully, all credit for this makes it where it's due. Thanks for your time, and enjoy.

This looks great! I like the style, and I love the color scheme, especially that deep purple.

Very soft and clear. There is art there. Congratulations

Thanks very much, I appreciate it! Right now I think my main qualm with the palette is that the blues and cyans run together a little bit, so I might touch up cyan to be a bit more minty.

typical of an artist when the work is finished and continues to carve the edges. I knew I had art in this tileset. :)

I will post this tileset in the facebook community Brazil, with your permission.

I decided to do a teensy bit more work on this tileset! Version 2 is now in the Dropbox, featuring improved tiles for blossoms, wells, trunk interiors, weapon racks, and traps.

Oof! :o I just realized there was a glaring mistake in my tileset. During the whole process, I had the Varied Ground setting turn off, meaning the only symbol used for ground tiles was the period, which was properly shaded. Comma, apostrophe, and the other tiles used for varied ground were not shaded! I have fixed the mistake and now varied ground should look better, though there's a bit more shaded punctuation in text.

Thank you all so much for the positive feedback! I've been slowly refining my tileset over the last few weeks, and today I'm adding two new optional color schemes. I also refined the original color scheme to feature a lighter brown and bolder yellow, but the original faded option is still in the Dropbox too.  I hope you enjoy!

I've been using strictly graphics-free, ASCII tilesets since I started playing. This was the set that changed my mind.

You're doing some fantastic work here. I've never seen any tileset quite like this one-- it keeps the simplicity and clarity of of straight ASCII, but with a subtle touch of life I haven't found anywhere else. Beautifully done.  :)

Hi!

I seem to have a problem with the tileset. I followed the instructions exactly. Here is the screenshot of my problem:

Any Ideas?
Also, what am I supposed to do with the color scheme text file?

Thanks!

Hi,

Hmmm. I would go back through your init.txt file and make sure you've got the exact filename of the .png in the four places it needs to be. Also make sure you've got the png itself in the art directory.

As for the color scheme, just replace the text in your colors.txt file with my text. that file is also in the init folder. Hope this helps! I don't know if it's quite the same in Linux.

I followed the instructions exactly.
That might be the issue - did you convert the file yourself as in step 2 on the wiki? I don't think that was necessary, It should work as it is.
In either case, verify that the tileset is a proper 24-bit png file with alpha-channel transparency. With 8-bit PNG the transparent pixels can only be fully transparent or fully opaque, not slightly transparent (which is the intended effect for all tiles of this tileset).
Best option would be to redownload the original.

EDIT: btw I clarified the text in the wiki.

Redownloading did the trick. Thanks to everyone for your help - the tileset is amazing!

Hi, i really love your tileset, but something bothers me, i don't know if it's a bug : when a build or smooth wall is beside another wall that is not build or smooth, he appear black (in the red circle at the bottom).

If it's not a bug, i maybe will change this on my side.

In anycase, thanks for your great work. :-)

Ok after some research, it's not a bug, it's the same thing for the vanilla tileset.

I've added the pillar for myself, I hope you will not mind !

I share it, do what you want with it. :-)

Hey, that looks really cool! Ill add it to the .png and give you pillar cred in the top post if i get a chance :) im at gen con this weekend so im pretty biz!

As for your graphical thing, im not sure! Last i checked the set used "O" in all the pillar spots so i left it that way to preserve the text.

You're right ! No need to change the last character on the tileset ! It's on the d_init.txt file :
Quote
Pillar tile, <character> as above.
[PILLAR_TILE:'O']

In my file it was
Quote
Pillar tile, <character> as above.

[PILLAR_TILE:255]

Hey! Lonesome Tileset was mentioned in a great article on a new game journal by Emergent Mage. The post breaks down how to get started on DF, and it seems like a pretty useful link to send a friend you've been encouraging to try the game. Thought I'd share it here:

It's just an ASCII tileset - no raw changes, no nothing. It works forever with any new version.

You're right, I didn't think of that.  I usually use TWBT sets, but I'm branching out into some of the nicer ASCII ones.

For some reason the tree trunks in my game don't look like on the screenshots, my tree trunks have the character "O" instead of a solid ellipse from the screenshots. Any idea how to fix?

In the file data/init/d_init.txt you need to change the TREE_TRUNK_PILLAR lines. From the screenshots it looks like they're using 10.

This tileset is great! I usually use this with CLA graphic folder. Because Honestly, CLA's tileset is too lively. Lonesome fits my vision of DF. A Grim and depressing place.

It's incredible to think I would EVER see competition for favourite tileset besides Taffer, but this is it. Damn gorgeous work.
:EDIT: My only gripe so far in game is that I can't see tree trunks represented on the ground level, besides being black boxes. Don't know if that's intentional or something messed up with my files, but I wouldn't think so.

:EDIT 2:
A clean data folder seems to have fixed it, I think something in the inits was a holdover from taffer and it was messing with things.

Thanks for the high praise, Taffer is legendary. Yeah that tree trunk has been a recurring issue, not sure why.

Hi, I searched around for people credited in your post (Anikki, Tocky, Plac1d, Lowright), and it looks like you made statue, undead, '@', etc tiles on your own? Those are the best looking sprites in the tileset, and I was curious if you could make more sprites in that style? Perhaps a few sprites for humans and other main races just for creature graphics tiles?

Yo! I did make those and thank you! There are a few more tiles I had plans to redo, but many of the creatures cant be given their own sprites, since they share the same tiles as the alphabet (e represents elf, for example). So if I changed that tile, I would be changing all the e's in the menus and everywhere else. You can do that kind of thing with a program called TWBT and scripting and stuff, but all that is beyond me haha. Maybe someday I'll learn how, because I agree it would be cool!

It is possible! LNP has all the assets stored in different folders inside its main folder. So you should be able to just drop my .png and color scheme .txt into the 'graphics' and 'colors' folders and theyll show up on your list in the custom graphics/custom colors menus. There might be other steps, I dont remember!

The best for me.  Thanks for making.

I personally like just the tileset.  It's nice to have something that preserves my perception of distance and area, but also remains faithful to the original tileset.

Plus the color palette?  Matte, morbid, muted.  I like it.
