Title: philosophical discussions/discussions about philosophy
Post by: Fishyfire on January 06, 2019, 01:35:45 pm
Discus your thoughts!
Perhaps, the philosophical implications of literature, music, or other forms of art?
Maybe the philosophical implications of behavior, knowledge, morality, life in general?

for instance: The Library of Babel.
it contains all books that could possibly exist using 25 basic characters, 80 characters per line, 40 lines per page and 410 pages per book!
that's 251312000 books! more books than there are atoms in the universe! even if you new the location of a book you wanted to obtain, the odds of reaching it in your lifetime, if you started in a random room, is infinitesimally infinitesimal!

or maybe we could discuss about philosophy in general. how much do you value it?
do you find it itself trivial or do you find it trivializes every thing else? or is this question very trivial?

The mime probably does.

TieTuesday reads The Gateless Gate (https://youtu.be/jd-37hWxJGo?t=435), a collection of koans which seem inane and contradictory but

First koan starts here. (https://youtu.be/jd-37hWxJGo?t=563)  The koan itself is only those two lines, the rest is explanation.

What would you prefer to endure; a magic 8-ball shoved up your anal hole, or getting your buttocks pounded with a spiked golden dildo?

Did we not have another philosophy thread previously?

Did it not turn out about as well as this one?

In other news, my favorite classical philosopher is Epicurus. Not that I really know much about him, he just seems like a fairly chill dude, and that's something I can respect.

Classical cynics are cool too, but I don't work out much so I can't in good conscience consider myself one.

What if the entire universe was a pineapple

Then that must mean that the multiverse is a one big pizza, and the various universes are either cut pineapples pieces or bacon chunks.

Everything has to start at something; they've thought the world was flat, but it was round. They'd call me a blasphemer, but they were wrong. Hitler was a soldier in WWI, then he eventually began his rise to power.*

It's not the rails that are the problem, it's the whole construction, really; the track is basically an automated circle that can't stop even for a minute.

But there's a fork in the rails.  One path has four people tied down, the alternative has one person tied down.  You can pull the lever to divert the train to the one person track.

Pete singer can choke on my peepee bro, what I'm supposed to like him cos his moral philosophy acknowledges the nuances that John Milton's brand of utilitarianism tends to avoid? Haha yeah maybe I would if I was a fuckin baked piece of whole wheat bitch, but I'm a BIG BOY that likes his ethics COMICALLY SIMPLE.

I recommend everyone reads Polybius' The Histories.

From what I've heard, Candide is actually banned in the US, so getting a physical copy might be difficult. It's in the public domain, though, so a digital copy is no further than Wikimedia (https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Candide).

As far as I know, books can't be banned-banned in the US thanks to, uh, you know, that one amendment. "Banned books" around here are books that schools and public libraries refuse to stock, but private bookstores can have whatever. Which of course leads to the wonderful situation of the local bookstore having a big old shelf labeled "banned books". :D
