I have a successful fort at war with pesky elven neighbours. During the conflict a few of my soldiers got captured as a result of a mission to pillage a nearby forest retreat.
So rather than creating a mission rescue prisoners from elves I thought to do it instead by using an avenger type adventurer dwarf from my fort to bring them back.
I retired my fort (trying to use the advice from here to minimise the mess when I unretire it) and created a powerful adventurer equipped with best weapons/armor from my fort site.
However, when I arrived at the forest retreat site where I previously attacked I am unable to find my prisoners - just a bunch of elves in their trees which are not even hostile (despite our civs being at war for many years).
So what am I doing wrong?
Is it even possible at all to rescue prisoners held by elves using an adventurer mode?
Should I first try to generate a rescue mission by talking to dwarves from my own fort?
Perhaps they are held somewhere else? - I checked legends mode and it clearly states that my dorfs are held by a site government from that forest retreat.
TIA

yeah, not all dwarf fortress stuff, translate to adventure yet. Most likely they are in there if you didnt look thoroughly, but I assume you did. Maybe it's because it's not in it yet, so you might need to rescue them the regular way, and for why those elves are docile around you, just attack them to help them remember :P, and headcanon that they attacked you ;D, Dwarf fortress is all about filling the blank, when the game gives you a leftover apple, take it's seed and grow an apple tree!

It appears so as the info from Legends mode shows that there are multiple animals like Taranatulas, Basilisks etc. associated with this site and yet I have seen nothing except elves. Regarding the search I only looked around significant structures shown on the map (several tree houses and one shaping tree). Perhaps I need to look around more.
just attack them to help them remember :P
Doing exactly that: dwarven vengeance!
I am still wondering though, is it really not implemented or I simply did not search enough. I will give it another go and see what new stories (slaughters) will happen.

Well, villages often don't show the full set of inhabitants, so if you go away and come back those creatures might be there. The elves are proly not very hostile because they got pulled from the ether and have no real idea about who you are or what you are or what they are.

ok so the prisoners could be on the outskirts of the site and not in the site. so look around the edges of the site for * and see if they are prisoners, while you're there you could pick up some elves and bring them back to your fort site if you made your adventurer a military commander you should be able to enlist the elven companions which all you need to do to control them fully isto send them off on a mission. so one could build an army of elves to siege elves.

Pretty sure this is an issue with elven sites being basic and unfinished. No prisons. A lot of what would make elves interesting only half-exists as worldgen stuff; if you go visit them they're just some people standing in trees.

They will build libraries if you mod them too. They're kind of big rooms with a roof of vines. Plus the usual bookshelves and people killing each other in the aisles.
But, yes, I'm sure there was an fotf where Toady answered that sites without dungeons haven't had them added, so you probably won't find any prisoners. Perhaps if there's a revolution, that's when you'll find prisoners and slaves often fleeing down the streets.

Thank you everyone for advice. Indeed the sites appear incomplete and in the end after much searching and many dead elves later I returned with my dorf avenger to the fort where I will perform the rescue mission normally.
