Title: Water in bucket
Post by: coalboat on February 19, 2020, 04:47:11 am
A dwarf in melancholy has been receiving bucket and bucket of water, but he doesn't drink the water. This is using up all buckets in the fortress.

Is there a non-dfhack way to free up the buckets? They are wooden buckets so magma dish washer won't work. I have tried forbidding the water and dumping the bucket but this didn't get the water out.

Well...in DF there are always ways to deal with such instances. Some of them involve burrows, walls, no doors, waiting until, by sheer magic, said dwarf won't need these buckets anymore and deconstructing walls. And making a coffin. Because...well, why not?

I'm sure other people will mention other ways but do always remember: This will always work...

After some experiments, I find a way.

Designate a pond area, and let dwarfs dump water there. A dwarf will grab a bucket (which can be either empty or be holding some water) and go to the well, and fill the bucket, and then dump the water. Voila! Empty bucket. You may notice that the dwarf immediately picks up the bucket and heads for the well again. Don't worry, as he will stop after a few rounds when he needs to eat or drink or sleep. And the bucket will end up on the floor, empty, to be brought back to the stockpile.

Dfhack has a 'drybuckets' thing in workflow (https://dfhack.readthedocs.io/en/stable/docs/Plugins.html#workflow), so that'll be a solution once we've got dfhack on the new versions.

Code: [Select]
workflow enable drybuckets

DFhack already works for the new versions. Since more than a week. Or two?

Those are alphas and I wouldn't advise people to use them unless they're already familiar with dfhack.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean that it would be broken. It just means, that TWBT isn't working and that there is a bug with quicksave. The rest is working as always. "Alpha" is just the indicator, that it isn't the full version yet - not the indicator for a buggy mess.

No. The "Alpha" is an indicator that much (quite possibly most of it) is untested, and may or may not work. Some things happen to work, some do not, and things that did work may cease to do so as a side effect of fixing something else.
The main purpose of the alpha version is NOT to allow people to rely on it, but to allow people to try it out and REPORT issues encountered.

My non-dfhack solution is feasible and actually very clever(lol...). Has anyone tried it out?

and may or may not work

And the key point is: It does work.
So, someone can be full of fear if he reads "Alpha", but a little bit of searching could have told him that all works well.
Besides: Telling people that they shouldn't use DFhack is somewhat strange - who should test things if noone shall use these things in the first place to test?

DFhack works lke a charm besides the two points already mentioned.

I have not tried it, but I recognize it as a clever solution to the problem.

Have one pond zone always active. Just one. This will use one bucket carried by one dwarf to deliver 1/7 water on a tile.

This serves to always empty your buckets out while at the same time keeping a very slow flow of water. This one pond job can even be used to create a totally safe mist generator. Zero possibility of flooding because its just one bucket at a time. It doesn't generate a lot of mist either, but at least its very light on the framerate.

Yes, just one is enough. This is a long-term, constant, activity that keeps buckets empty.

Also note that jail and hospital should be nearer to the meeting area than the bucket stockpile is, as this lets the dwarfs choose the half-full buckets over the empty ones.

Today I see a milker take a full bucket with water and use it to hold milk. The water is gone. No water[1] on floor. This might eliminate the necessity to empty bucket in the first place.
