So I wanted to train the military tactics of my squad of 3 dwarfs ( 1 Axelord and 2 Spearlords, just ignore the odd combo)
I did that by raiding a goblin site of ~10 inhabitants. Then I when I felt confident enough I tried to raze the site, and they apparently lost the battle according to legends.
Now it seems on of those poor bastards is dead and the other 2 imprisoned.
But my attempts at saving those guys are apparently useless. They instantly come back with a "Save prisoner" mission and by "raiding" there are no findings either...
Is this a bug? I have legendary ambushers (my hunters) tasked to their save retrieval.
Or can they be elsewhere? I am having trouble finding them in the legends viewer... I want them back so badly :(
According to the world screen, the place I attacked was their last visited place.
I just started the Giant Grizzly bear breeding program so the bigger fortresses are not that big of an option right now.

Needs more testing, but I also haven't managed a successful prisoner rescue in 47.x. I've rescued prisoners in 44.12 (and many other people also seem to have done so, even rescuing imprisoned demons from human sites, ha ha).

Oh, you need to stop raiding if you value your game then. Save corruption caused by raids was fixed in 47.03. Prisoner rescue is possible in 44.12. As is a bunch of buggy behaviour leading up to a non-recoverable crash.

Now that sound scary.
I knew that the raid system wasn't that reliable yet, but now it sounds more serious than I thought.
So what do you reckon? Are my dwarfs lost?
I definetly need to look into upgrading my df version... would be also interesting if I can I take this fortress with me.
Of course I failed to remember setting up a proper backup before this stuff happened. ;D

Well, you should be able to rescue them. Raid crashing/corruption isn't a guaranteed thing.
The only problem is that, once it does corrupt, simply upgrading probably won't fix the problem as the save will remain corrupted.

- The instantly come back, without any report or any events about in the world map
- The presumed prisoned dwarfs (according to legends) are still available as a rescue mission
May Armok have mercy on their soul. Sad about the full steel armor and the Lord-Level weapon skills....

Ah, yes it's gotta be a raid with the option to rescue prisoners on. You said there was a report in your op so I assumed that's what you were doing.

I've tried both options.
A mission just about rescuing the prisoners or a Raid mission with retrieving prisoners turned on as well.
While the first option just makes them comeback nearly instantly (even without a mission report), the raid mission will just complete but they won't find any prisoners.

What about conquering the site? Even if the mission doesn't free the prisoners, you might be able to request them back once it becomes one of your holdings.

Often when you attack you end up in a fight against the prisoners.
Raid, with option to free prisoners does work (sometimes). But 44.12 raiding is so messed up that once your save corrupts any number of weird things can happen before it crashes.
Try from scratch in 47.04. I don't think anyone's managed to free a prisoner in the latest version yet.

Just tried it. The prisoners weren't hostile, although one did somehow become lord of the pits and get executed when we took over. I unfortunately wasn't able to request them back. Since you can't raid your holdings that also kind of makes it impossible to retrieve them even if the raids worked. Definitely needs some bugfixing.
