I thought I'd have a play in the arena to test whether it's more useful arming & armouring my dwarves or spend their time training. So I pitted a highest Axe abilty warrior with a wooden training axe against an unskilled dwarf with iron weapons and armour. Not sure what I was expecting, but what happened amused me;
Urist McNovice made a few attacks but Durin McBadass casually stepped out of his wild lunges.
Durin McBadass slaps Urist's right arm with the flat of his axe.
Urist drops his axe.
Durin McBadass slaps him repeatedly with the flat of his axe.
Urist manages to drop his shield also.
Durin coninues to slap him about the head, body and legs with the flat of his axe.
Urist cheerfully points out that his armour wearing skill has improved.
Durin continues whacking him in the head, then removes Urist's facemask.
The whacking continues until Urist McNovice passes out.
The whacking continues until Durin passes out from over-excertion.
Apparently Urist's head stands up well against carambola wood.
Eventually Durin regains his composure and finishes him off; but it definately felt like he was toying with him!
So I think I'll have my lads training more often than pumping the bellows!!

Conclusion of !!science!!
its better to improve your dwarves' skills but it won't make much difference if said dwarves are elven pansies wielding wood

should test it with candy since that's the top tier and something pretty much every embark has access too
