Post by: RoseHeart on April 20, 2021, 06:13:19 am
This is The Grid, a forum game where you control a random unit from a number of classic grid games. This is a cross-forum free for all!

The List
Suggestions are welcome, but depending on how familiar I am with it / how much learning is required a game may be delay, substituted, or denied. (prioritizing boardgames right now)

Edit: This prediction came true, down to the turn I predicted I'd lose.

Do these appear the same size for everyone? Are all 5 symbols visible?

Yes
Title: Re: The Grid
Post by: Glass on April 20, 2021, 01:42:53 pm
I can indeed see all five characters, and they do appear to be of the same size.

I believe that teletype is also monospace,
So if you're worried about equal spacing,
You can just use this. It'll keep it even.

(It's the typewriter button in the options. (tt)(/tt), but with brackets.)

They are pretty small, how about a larger font size?
Also in.

Larger teletype is indeed an option.

what about smaller teletype

What about my post that already used teletype?

We'll start with 3.

Thank you for your patience. We'll start when I finish with the units.

Prologue

Once every so often, the barrier between realities grows thin. Just as it is now. The grid takes the shape of these other realities, as a river and hill take shape. Bridges appear. An apple falls to the ground...

Turn Order:
Melee Attacks
Movement
Ranged Attacks

Highest Initiative Goes first.

Ranged attacks aim at the target unit's current location, unless you declare somewhere else.

Turn 1

Move to the snake's food.

Move to food

>Run up to the nearest enemy and smack them in the face with my staff

Move Phase

The hunchback Nu Mou sees their adversaries arrive, a massive trampling snake, and someone riding horseback, both an equal distance from the white mage. [2] They decide to head for the one on a horse across the north bridge...

The Nomadic Trooper begins heading in the other direction, on a collision course with the massive snake... After trotting across the south bridge and through the plains they arrive at the snake's food, a large apple.

The snake is barreling towards the horseman, who holds their ground. The snake rears up and opens a round mouth with rows upon rows of teeth. A terrible vacuum bares down on the horseman. The apple is sucked up, and so is the rider.

Nomadic Trooper eliminated.

End

The plump snake digests their meal, and doubles in length. An apple falls from the sky, and lands nearby in the grass.

Note: Out of range of their current location. You'll go as close as you can this turn.

retcon the snake into being undead, and jump to the side and cast that healing spell I can't be bothered to check the name of on it
Note: Out of range to use cure on their current location even after moving. You'll go as close as you can this turn.

Move Phase

The white mage shuffles towards to slithering towering terror. The creature is moving twice as fast and cuts off the Nu Mou's advance. The miserly floppy-eared magic user looks up as they are covered by shadow. With a crash all goes dark.

Nu Mou eliminated.

Snake wins!!!

Game Set - ArchimedesWojak Victory

ArchimedesWojak, choose your fate:

A. Retire from playing the snake. Choose a game on the list to increase their influence by 1.
B. Start Game 2 as the snake (there may be character adjustments, which will be made public). Total wins can be applied to game influence when you decide to retire, but get nothing if you lose.
C. Forfeit influence from this win, and start Game 2 with a random unit from a listed game of your choice.

Champion ArchimedesWojak and waitlister a1s have priority for joining Game 2. After that it is first come first serve, if there isn't room extra sign-ups will be added to the waitlist. 3 spots open.

Hmm, perhaps I gave the wrong impression. This game is not about creating fair fights. A chess queen will be superior to a chess pawn, if two players happen to get those. Nonsensical units may also be permitted. But there are some things to keep in mind:

After looking at BrikWars (https://brikwars.com/rules/2020/1.htm#elements), I've come to a decision about whether to include it or not. The answer is not. The reason? This is not a grid based game, instead relying on measurements. (looks cool, glad to learn about it)

We need 1 more player, anyone want to round off Game 2 so we can start?

Just fudge a tile as 2-3 inches from one end to the other, and have close combat weapons (swords, axes, knives, an entire lamp pole someone managed to pick up) have a range of 1 tile horizontally/vertically and 1 tile diagonally if they're of the long kind (longswords, spears, greataxes, halberds, etc)

(I know you mean that in a friendly way, but that's kind of personal to be calling someone by their first name on forums without their consent. I know you meant well by it but it makes me kind of uncomfortable tbh. Now you know though.)

Well, I got my forum game start there. To tell you the truth it was a good place to learn as formatting was extremely limited, which helped me to focus. These guys (or for now, 1 guy) are from an awesome place called Games N' Things. One of my reasons for leaving GameFAQs was that the general moderation across the site at the time was still ununified in their stance on whether Forum Games were on or off-topic.

This little oasis though, they're all about it. Units PMd soon...

Testing, testing. Hello? This is Accrovideogames from GameFAQs. I'm a moderator at Games N' Things, a private board specialized in forum games. I also host the most games there, such as D&D, FMK, Two Truths and a Lie, and Hangman. I've collaborated in the distant past with the host of this game.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I understand the rules. I would have liked to read a more thorough explanation with examples. I also feel disadvantaged for not knowing what happened during the first game. My best guess is that each player doesn't know what the other players are doing until everyone has acted, so there's some mind games involved. I also assume you can't move diagonally. I find it interesting that the champion unit's information is revealed to every player in order to counterbalance the fact that it keeps getting stronger.

(a summary of game 1 has been posted, and they will be given time to consider this information.)

Turn 1

Devour Troubadour
Note: Attacks will aim at the target unit's current location, C6. Movement will favor N>E>S>W, as C6 is too far, move to C2(coincidentally, the apple).

Move to C3. Declare troubadour a "King".

Quote from: Accrovideogames
move to C4 and end my turn.

Move Phase

[1] The Knight rears up on their stead and gallops through the sands to the glowing light of the Goal Zone. There they are met by another rider, the Troubadour. The Knight gets off their horse and kneels before them, declaring them their King. ('King' Troubadour can choose to renounce this title now or at a later turn if they wish.) The infamous giant Snake is quickly on their way. A large apple rests on a shallow sand dune, and the terrible worm slams into the hill, the produce gone in a second.

oh yeah sorry: attempt to devour the knight
Note: As no other specific known location was stated otherwise, move will aim at the target unit's current location, C3, and the remaining 2 move will continue straight(East).

Melee Phase

The pious looking fellow in holy robes takes notice of their new ally's horse, and its' small hooves compared to their own horse. They observe that it must be difficult not to sink in the sand without watching where they travel. They offer to give The Knight a ride, and let their horse carry their supplies without as much burden so that they can travel easier. The Knight accepts, and with King Troubadour carrying both of them and The Knight's horse following in toe, they are off.

(The Knight can choose to get off King Troubadour's horse now or at a later turn if they wish, and can specify an adjacent cardinal space.)

https://youtu.be/C2v7uny47Ek https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLXOlOC1_qId-HkGSjRqPJG8H8aYShdTG

Move Phase

The sand worm plows through the Goal Zone like a speeding train. It pierces the glowing vale on the other side to menace the retreating horsemen, just out of reach. Behind them, colorful rock layers pile maddeningly to make up a large canyon wall, looming over them like a grave omen. An assortment of creature bones are scatters at the foot of the cliff. It appears this desert is The Snake's killbox.

King Troubadour takes The Knight back to the Goal Zone, and The Snake diverges from them to devour another apple. Now it is twice as long as when they first arrived here. And noticeably faster.

Turn 4

Move towards King Troubadour (& Knight but stay Two Tiles Away)
Note: I'll interpret this as moving clockwise around them, avoiding adjacency (C3, D2, D4, and E3). Please be more specific in the future, especially if this wasn't your intent.

disembark on C3, then move and land on E4

Quote from: Accrovideogames
Move to C4 and end my turn.

Melee Phase

The Knight gets back on their horse.

Move Phase

They then ride towards the dust cloud erupting from the large snake. Before the serpent can weave any further between the dunes, The Knight bounds onto it and rides their horse up to the head. They slam their sword deep into the creature's slit of an eye. As the beast writhes and thrashes, soon the dust settles...

Snake Eliminated.

King Troubadour rides towards the slain monster to get a better look at their subject's handywork, however a dark cloud is closing in fast. A hungry swarm of flesh-eating scarabs is already making quick work of the carcass, and by the time they've dispersed all that's left behind is the massive snake skeleton.

The party sets up camp for the night...

Knight = 4 (+2)
King Troubadour = 3 (+1)
Snake = 1

Game Set - a1s-Accrovideogames Victory

While you can communicate, please spoiler your final decision. Choose your fate:

A. Retire from playing your units. Vote for a game on the list to increase their influence by 1. Knight's pick if answers differ.
B. Start Game 2 as your current units (there may be character adjustments, which will be made public). Total wins can be applied to game influence when you decide to retire, but get nothing if you lose. (If not all wish to continue with their unit, those that opt out get nothing)
C. Vote for one of you to roll 2 characters to pick between for the next match. Knight's pick if answers differ.
D. Stab your partner in the back, and take the prize and glory all for yourself! If both do this, the battle will resume. (Choose one of the other options to go with this)

ArchimedesWojak, unfortunately you have bet everything and lost.

Game 3 Notice

For the next one, I'd like to do an RP session, and require the use of portraits, which I can provide for those that don't request to make their own. The player limit will also be expanded(and maybe map size), but let's just see how many people sign up. :)

Note: Players who managed to earn points will be permitted to spend them before the next game to remove that many listed games of choice from their character roll. Make your choices when you sign-up.

('Frogger' and 'Into the Breach' have been added to the list of games.)

Crap, I meant to say, if answers are different, Knight wins a tie, as they have more points.

Turn 5

B

Quote from: Accrovideogames
I choose B.

Game Set - a1s-Accrovideogames Victory

The equestrians decide to ride off together. These are harsh lands, full of tough decisions. It was easy to choose friendship.

Unit reveals:

Knight (Chess)
• HP: 1

• Move: Special (1 in one cardinal direction and 2 in a different one, in either order. Must move each turn.)

• Initiative: 8

• Capture: Destroy any unit you move on to.

• Oath: You can declare another player's unit to be your 'king', adding it to their unit's name. If they would take lethal damage, they instead move 1 away, and your next movement is canceled. If they die, you lose. You cannot break your oath, but they can renounce the title, then you are free.

Troubadour (FE7)
Quote
• HP: 3

• Move: 5

• Initiative: 8

• Mend: (2 uses) Use this staff to target yourself or a unit up to 2 spaces away. Heal for 1. Harmful to undead. 25% miss. 25% double healing.

• Berserk: (2 uses) Use this on a unit up to 2 spaces away. They gain an extra point if they get a kill next turn. 25% miss. 25% 2 extra points.

• Sleep: (2 use) Use this on a unit up to 2 spaces away. Puts them to sleep for 1 turn. 25% miss. 25% double duration.

• Loot: Killed enemies will drop a Staff of some kind that adds uses when picked-up.

• Rescue: You can pick up a friendly 1x1 unit for transport. This unit cannot act until they choose to get off or you set them down. -1 to Move, -3 to Initiative while burdened.

• Promotion: Win this game to become a Valkyrie in the next one.

(Snake already posted.)

I think we have enough to justify starting the next match. That said we can use more to help fill things out more and have a really big and epic battle. We'll start soon though, so if your interested in fighting tell me ASAP, as as soon as I finish finalizing units we will start.

I really hope you're being dramatic, but sending you all my love and prayers regardless Secretdorf. You're a fun playmate and I want us to have many many more adventures.

I'm touched you chose to share that with me, and hope you have lots of friends and family to support you though this.
