Title: The Tales of Runlance - Year 1511 - OVERSEERS NEEDED! APPLY INSIDE!
Post by: TheImmortalRyukan on September 10, 2021, 01:26:02 pm
There is a legend among our people.
Of a group of dwarves in a dying land, who built a home in a last ditch effort to preserve their civilization.
Their tale begins in the Licevaathira, the Legendary Plane.
What follows is their story.

* - * - * - * - *

Welcome to Runlance! While relearning the game in Adventure Mode, I figured I might as well play in Fortress Mode too. This is a Succession Fort, so all the normal rules and procedures are in place. One week turns, one in-game year, no deliberate fortress ruining, ect.

The world is a pocket sized world with 1500 years of history and an above average number of Megabeasts and Titans. All non-Goblin civs are dead, and the Goblins too only number around 1400. So the dwarves we start out with and receive with the two hardcoded migrations in the first year are all we're gonna get. Dwarves are our number one commodity.

Spoiler: The World (click to show/hide)

This Succession Fort will also have a long term goal: to reach a population of 200 Dwarves living in the Fort. Maybe unrealistic, but it gives us something to work towards.

May the Dwarves of Runlance prosper and their beards never dry.

So me and the lads finally decided to settle here in this valley. It as tough, getting here that is. So many dead and lost. Urist's party was the worst, that damned goblin ambush. But we seven survived and here is where we'll carve our home.

Having been elected this year's overseer, an ancient tradition of the old Mountainhomes or something like that, I order some initial lodgings to be delved.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It ain't much, just some basic rooms for storage and maybe a dorm, if bedrooms take too long to carve. Bedrooms will go on the next level I think.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It only takes a few days for the first signs of civilization to take shape here in Runlance (the lads apparently held a vote on the name in the first week.) We have some food storage and a few workshops to begin producing doors and beds.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My next concern was food. Our supplies were already thin and we only had a few seeds to plant. I noticed the valley floor was wooded and fertile, so assumed we'd find good soil around the river, so I ordered a tunnel from the main camp, under the river, and up again beside it. This would, as they say, be far easier said than done. Just as the miners were hitting the underside of the river, I began to receive reports of damp stone. I told them to ignore it, as they were under the river. However I then began to receive reports of standing water in the tunnels. This had me worried, but it wasn't much water, so the excavation of the farms went ahead as planned. Also we struck a bit of gold while mining, making a few of our more materialistic lads salivate.

It was later that week, as we were excavating the bedrooms, that more disturbing reports were made.

Spoiler: bedrooms (click to show/hide)

The entire farm area was under water, and the water was rising. So I quickly ordered some channels dug on either side of the room to try and drain it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And that is when we discovered it. As a few tiles were mined away, the stone erupted forth large quantities of water and flooded the newly dug spaces near instantly. We had embarked upon an aquifer.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I immediately ordered the entire farm area scrapped and ordered a stairway dug near to the surface to establish a farm there. The risk of tree roots opening up unplanned skylights was nothing on the very real possibility of starving to death.

To mitigate flooding in the short term, I ordered a small cistern dug in the hallway. the cistern is three levels deep and completely channeled in the middle, meaning that water that trickles down from the old farm area should fill it up slowly.

Spoiler: Cistern interior (click to show/hide)

Outside of that little adventure, spring passed fairly quickly and uneventfully. The main lodgings have almost been dug out, and everyone has a basic bedroom. Farms are just now being set up and planted, and we have an actual door seperating us from the outside world now. Won't stop anything bigger than a cat, but it does pprovide us that basic sense of security. For once, the Dwarves of the North Mirrors have a home.

Depending on my schedule, I might be able to take a turn.  I've been wanting to play around with a Dying World.

In the future, I'd suggest expanding into the ruins, as that should allow the civilization to regrow.

This Summer and Autumn were spent dealing with the Aquifer problem. The main issue being that to access to the farms from the fort, you had to go past the River. The River bisects the valley's stony side from the fertile forest on the other. So farming isn't feasible from this side. And to get through to the farms, you had to pass through an Aquifer, one that was through sand and quickly filling up our existing tunnels. If I didn't act fast, our access to the food stocks would vanish, and that ain't good in anyone's book. So, as the makeshift cistern filled up to the top, I ordered the hallway blocked off.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I then decided, if I couldn't access the farms from below, I'd access them from above. So I began planning and ordering the construction of a sky bridge. It begins on the Bedroom floor and will go over the river, and then down a staircase into the Farms.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I was worried about our lack of dorfpower being a problem, but lo and behold, a group of four dwarves arrived at the Fort today, begging to be let in. We were all so overjoyed at seeing more of our kin.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Four Dwarves arrived, among them was an armorer and another miner. I set the Armorer to finally build a Smith, and the Miner to help our mason cut blocks for the bridge. For now, the access to the farms is literally a staircase in the ground, accessible to anyone. Should we get any nasty surprises, we're boned. But on the bright side, our first harvest was around this time.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The rest of Summer passed relatively uneventfully. But at the onset of August, we received an odd sight.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some of the Dwarves wondered at the lack of a liason. I wondered where the Hell did the caravan come from at all. Alas, we have no items to trade, so the Traders spend a month in the depot before departing as they arrived.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

About a month or so after that, we received even more dwarves . Bringing our total number up to 19. (I asked, yes Children do count, useless cunts.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Towards the end of Autumn, the Sky Bridge was basically finished. It lead all the way to the Farms and had walls and a roof for roughly a third of it. Also, my Quarters got smoothed. I mean, I am the Overseer as well as Bookkeeper and Manager. I need a place to work damnit.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then we got a huge scare at the end of autumn.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Stukos the Farmer swears he saw an "Army of the Dead" while walking along the bridge. I quickly ordered the fort locked down and the Entrance Bridge closed. But after a while, nothing happened. I went out onto the bridge, and saw nothing. I lowered the Bridge, and went out looking with some of the Miners. We found nothing but a Piglet that had been brutally slaughtered, and alot of upturned grass around it. Something was here, but it didn't stick around. This quickly ends the festive mood in the fort, as the grim realities of our world finally begin to catch up with us.

Here are some drawings of the Fort at the start of Winter.

Spoiler: Main Floor (click to show/hide)

There are some grumblings about "an election" of some sort. I say bah! to that. I ain't acting like no damned Noble. Now where's that Big gem I ordered....

I don't know what the whole deal about the Dead walk was. I searched everywhere and found nothing but a quick combat log with some Experiment and the piglet. Anyways, Winter update to come shortly.

I can answer that.  The Experiment are Frankenstein Monsters, aka they're dead people reanimated.

Well, we've made it, one whole year. Winter wasn't anything terrible, it was actually pretty mild all things considered. I ordered the miners (which includes myself incidentally) to begin mining out the gold veins in the walls on the lower levels, taking care to avoid the Aquifer. Gold is nice and all, but I'm hoping to find some sweet sweet Hematite while mining the gold out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I guess there was a bad batch of booze or something, because three dorfs all adopted different names and personalities seemingly overnight

Spoiler: Delphonso (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: List of Dwarves (click to show/hide)

I'm slightly worried about "King" Zultan, I was so sure they were a woman before...

Not sure if I mentioned it yet, but I dug out a well and aqueduct that connects the river. the well is 5x5 and 5 deep, so it shouldn't need refilling often. There's a Lever that controls the floodgate to the River. I highly recommend to anyone who operates it, to not leave it open, it'll flood everything from the Well down...

Spoiler: Well Room and Aqueduct (click to show/hide)

Towards the end of Winter, I ordered a large rom dug out in the mines, my thought being a Grand Storage Room or something, idk. That's up to the next guy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"Next guy?" you ask? Well the lads all got together and told me I was being a pompous ass and proceeded to cast a vote. It seems Jack won and I'm out now I get to keep my titles and rooms, or so I think.. anyways, Zultan wanted to meet with me later today, so I'm off for now.

* - * - * - * - * - *

Meeting Hall
First of Granite, 1501

"Ahem. thank you all for attending, quiet down please, thank you all for attending. Now, Zultan and I had a small "discussion" earlier today, and what do you know, turns out s/he is the rightful heir to the throne. You know, the throne that has sat empty in the Mountainhome for thousands of years? Yeah that one. Anyways, long story short, "King" Zultan is now our glorious Queen by right of birth. So uh... Long Live the King? Queen? I don't know, someone get me some booze."

* - * - * - * - * - *

So that's the end of the first year of Runlance. I was honestly laughing for a good 10 minutes over Zultan becoming queen, it's almost too perfect. Anyways, good thing I started smelting all that Gold, otherwise we'd be having an unhappy Monarch  ;D

Anyways, the fort is in decent shape. I have some mines up and running and some very rudimentary defenses (namely, the bridge-gate). I'm not sure if there will be any more migrant waves that come, so our only hope for long term survival is to start getting dorfs hitched. My end-goal for the Fort is to hit 200 dorfs living at once. So try not to get any of them killed.

Notes:
- So we embarked n an aquifer that takes up the right half of the map. Oops, not too difficult to avoid at least.
- For the love of Armok don't leave the Well Floodgate open, it won't end... well.
- The Queen is gonna need some suitable quarters ASAP. Also, Zultan was out Doctor, I'm not sure if being Monarch changes them from doing doctor stuff or not.
- The Farms are accessible from the sky bridge, which is itself not very secure. It's only halfway covered, and only a set of doors separates the bridge from the fort. Also all out food stocks are in the farms, not exactly the best urban planning here, I know.
- Caverns are not breached yet, I wasn't feeling brave enough to do so, but whoever is next, feel free to.

Well, EuchreJack, you're up! I reverted the graphics to ASCII. Feel free to use whatever Graphic Pack you want, but please for the love of Armok, revert back to ASCII before you upload. No one likes a corrupted save.

It looks like there is another site from our civilization so we might end up getting a few migrants. Also, there's an uncontacted elf civ so I'm going to contact them.

Notes from the journal of Theyflower the Mechanic.

That well is cute, but we need something bigger, something more powerful! I'm going to design and construct an amazing underground aqueduct with a power plant of bewildering power to match. As long as our monarch is happy I'm sure they won't get in the way. Gold furnite for you!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, there's some elves. I'm going to walk over and ask for yearly tribute. Hopefully they don't kill me... I'm back, they're going to give us some free stuff every autumn. SCORE!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That sky walkway is exposed, time to wall it all in.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some migrants showed up. Twenty two of them. There's plenty of hauling to be done, but I sent a few to the mines and had a couple make carpenter workshops out where the logs are. We're going to need a lot of beds, barrels, and wooden things.

Craftsdwarves! They don't make anything actually useful but they want a guild. I told them yes and I'll get around to it... eventually. Editor's note: Theyflower did not get around to it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spring is nearly done and so is my Aqueduct! Time to get the control room dug out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our great and noble monarch who we will not write mean things about keeps rambling on about bins. I'm going to have some made just to shut them up about it.

Lots of the new migrants are just sleeping in the dining hall... going to carve out a dormitory for them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The monarch's quarters are nearing completion. I'm going to move in the furniture and... that tomb above them? It's mine. Why are there stairs in MY tomb? It leads to the plumbing control room. Don't you dare question it!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Summer arrived and the last of the control room levers are being linked to the bridges. I made sure to leave a few outlets so that water can get sent to where it is needed later on. Time to have the miners channel a connection to the river! I'm so excited, hopefully there isn't a catastrophic flood!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here comes the water...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And it stopped where I wanted it to!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pull the lever, fill the plumbing!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Perfect! Pull the lever, fill the power plant!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While my... our power plant was filling up nine more migrants arrived. I told ten random dwarves they were in the military now and to go train or something. I had a bed placed in the entryhall area and told them it was a barracks.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, we need a real hospital. I had the miners dig out a farm for pig tails so we can get some thread and cloth along with a hospital area by the well.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some kid went insane.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Autumn is here now, and I feel rather accomplished. My tomb is all engraved and has a nice gold statue of me. To top it all of it leads to the lever control room so people will NEVER be able to forget me. The power plant was starting to fill up properly so I had a bit of water drained from it, this would agitate the water so that it flows in just the right way to make the waterwheels keep going. Now we have unlimited power!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The caravan arrived. I traded some buckets, splints, and crutches for whatever animals they had and some bins of cloth and leather.

Pull this lever, it's time to flood some water to irrigate our future farms.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

More migrants? Seven more dwarves. I'm going to have one of them start cutting our large pile of rough gems. That crazy kid also ended up dying. Delphanso seems a bit down, was probably his son. I had some coffins built in the remnants of a gold vein so that our dead can rest better.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The throne room is done. Those pillars in the middle make it look regal. Maybe it's not dune until the sides are lined with golden statues but the Monarch seems happy.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I had a stockpile for pig tails, dimple cups, thread, cloth, and dye setup along with some of the cooresponding workshops including a mill powered from my... erm our amazing power plant.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My amazing and wonderfu- our power plant is filled with water. I closed off the plumbing system as no more water is needed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One of the dwarves fell into a mood and made a weapon rack. I'm going to have it placed in my tomb.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The year is done and so are my big dreams of a dye industry. To support it we needed power so I went with an oversized power plant fed by an extensible and high capacity plumbing system. On top of all of that I made the monarch satisfied. This was a good year. Maybe the power plant didn't need to be that big, but hopefully someone will find a use for it later.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sure, maybe the military doesn't have armor. Sure, maybe we don't have enough bronze bars to outfit them all. Sure, maybe we don't have enough ore to make more bars. Those aren't my problems.

I think the exact amount is 4800 units of dorfpower, but also there's space to channel out more water to build 1.5x more water wheels. Even still we should have enough power for a magma pumpstack to bring magma from the seas to the surface and still have two thousand power units left over before we start expanding the power plant.
My real goal was have a millstone setup for a dye industry and as a side effect I made the power plant which required plumbing. I decided to just overdo both so that future players would have some useful infrastructure in place  8)

If EuchreJack doesn't respond by tomorrow, Blueturtle will be up

Also, feel free for anyone else to request a turn!

Euchre, are you available for this or should I start?

Feel free to take it

Got it.

Thanks Blueturtle, I hadn't expected Metruption to finish their turn so fast.

I'll withdraw my application for Overseer for now.  If there is a lull later one, maybe I'll rejoin.

Thanks for passing it on instead of holding on to the turn until the bitter end. Seeing as Turtle is the last player on the list, you might get your chance sooner than expected.

Attention, comrades! For too long have the people of Runlance labored under the unjust rule of the bourgeoisie! Here, at the last bastion of dwarven civilization, we had the perfect chance to spark the Revolution, but what do we get instead? Puppet kings and selfish nobles, playing the trappings of monarchy even as the world burns around us! I say NO MORE! Today, the workers will rise, and throw off the unjust rule of the bourgeoisie! Today, Runlance shall become truly free!

Here are the tasks that the Revolution shall accomplish:

1. Due to our critical manpower shortage, the “King” Zultan unfortunately gets to keep his head. However, his rooms will be stripped bare of all their finery. The opulence given to the burial chambers of Zultan and Theyflower is particularly shameful - who are they to prepare such riches for their deaths when the rest of us struggle in this life? They can be buried with the rest!

Here we see the people joyously destroying this symbol of the bourgeoisie.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Construction of an atom smasher shall also begin in case we have anyone who truly deserves the guillotine.

2. The critical work of mining shall be socialized! All members of the fort shall participate in this noble activity! Every dwarf in the halls of Runlance has equal opportunity to strike the earth!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Accelerated production of picks to outfit the workers shall begin immediately once I figure out where all the bronze went.

3. Our wealth shall make us a target from many threats, most of all the Goblin hordes. For the preservation of dwarven civilization, strong weapons and armor shall be needed. No more bothering with gold and silver - bronze and steel is what we need! To this end, an ambitious mining project has begun. With the riches of the earth, Runlance shall become a bastion to stand for a thousand years!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Additionally, efforts to breach the aquifer must begin at once!

Rejoice, comrades! A new age of strength and prosperity is upon us! Glory to Runlance! Glory to the Revolution!

Uuuuh… my head. Ow, that was some good wine.

Ugh. Let’s see what I was working on while drunk.

Hmm. Communist revolution. Alright, I can work with-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

oh no

1st Granite: Last time, we got one zombie which punched one pig, but I’m not taking chances. The Necromancers know where we are and what we’ve got.

I’m unsure about the mechanics of hiding while we still can in this place. Typically, some sort of shelter-in-place plan is prepared. I unfold the sheet marked “emergency protocols”-

...that works.

2nd Granite: It appears nobody is outside, so after waiting a while to be sure, Thob pulls the lever and the front gate slams shut

I saw about five intelligent undead and a few zombies on the preliminary scout report, but now all I’ve got is this guy

Additionally, the plans seem a bit out of date. Large sections of the fort are marked as forbidden, including the King’s quarters. Ah well, I guess he gets to keep his stuff a little longer then.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

4th Granite: The necromancer left without a fight. After waiting a few days to be sure, I have opened the drawbridge and lowered the alarm.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I’ve also taken the opportunity to update the emergency burrow a bit. It now includes the sky bridge, all of the current levels, and the farms.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I see Comrade Mistem is enjoying a walk in the Water Reactor chambers. Truly a marvel of modern Dwarven engineering. I’ve looked at some of the diagrams describing it, but I can’t wrap my head around how it works.

I wonder if it can be put to some military use.

13th Granite: The mine project has yielded its first vein of tetrahedrite.

16th Granite: Interesting, Zultan has not much to say about his change in circumstances.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We appear to be out of plump helmet spawn. Records indicate we still have 706 plump helmets.

Get eating, folks.

23th Granite: I don’t know if anyone’s noticed this before, but there are a LOT of salmon in the flooded corridor.

I wonder if this could be used for some sort of fish farm? We’d have to have a mechanism for-

WHAT

Spoiler: Bonus (click to show/hide)

No, wait, seriously. I thought we weren't getting any more migrants, right? Because the civ was dead?

What gives?

Always good to see fresh faces in Runlance. I had thought our people were destroyed, but some remnants must still remain.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Welcome, migrants, to the proud commune of Runlance! Your flight from the hordes is at an end! Here you will find safety, warmth, food, and shelter, and of course, drink. For what you need you shall only be asked to provide what you are able - no more laboring under cruel merchants or callous monarchs! Today, you become a Comrade of Runlance! Long live the Revolution!

28th Granite:

Most auspicious.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There appears to be no aquifer to speak of in the site I have selected. A team of miners, led by our founder Ryukan, has been dispatched to delve as deep into the earth as possible.

2nd Slate:

I thought I told you that you have no authority anymore? He's banned the export of bins. Just last month he demanded the production of bins. Again, the capricious mind of the bourgeoisie shows itself.

3rd Slate:

I’m really kind of confused. There’s a petition - which I can’t answer, because it demands a higher official - and then this happens. No idea what’s going on.

9th Slate: In less than a week, our miners have reached the first cavern layer. Outstanding work.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15th Slate: We’ve walled off the end of the stair. There will be time to explore the caverns later. For now, I’ve ordered the mining of all minerals and gems along the way.

also

He makes more sense now. He wants bins, so he doesn’t want them exported.

Whatever.

24th Slate:

To accelerate production of charcoal (which seems to be the bottleneck in smelting) I’m placing a wood stockpile near the charcoal furnace.

Also, it seems someone has left orders for the smelters to smelt gold on repeat. I have dismissed these orders.

Also, I cannot for the life of me fathom why the carpenter, butcher, and tanner workshops are out in the open. I’m excavating new spaces for them here.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

26th Slate:

The carpenters have settled into their new space. Production of charcoal is greatly improved. Smelting of copper and tin ores can begin soon.

The arrival of the migrants reminds me of another project I would like to undertake - the construction of a grand Hall of Knowledge. Though reading and writing are uncommon among our people, those of us who are literate must be prepared to record our history before it is lost forever. I have set aside space in the cliffside for this endeavor.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15th Felsite: A cause for celebration!

24th Felsite: It’s relatively clear why smelting was so slow - the smelteries were placed near the surface, and each piece of ore had to be carried in from the mines. To remedy this, I’ve moved the smelters and forge to a specialized chamber, with a stockpile of coal and ores behind them.

Most of the fort helps haul the ores up when it opens.

2nd Hematite:

In Soviet Runlance, work does you!

I wonder what we’ll get?

According to Legends Viewer on as I looked on Embark, there are around 60 Dwarves alive in the world, outside of the hardcoded 19 we got, so that may be where these guys are coming from, idk

I believe only a truly dead civ stops after the 2 migrant waves (check the 'c' menu as soon as you start the fort, if there are no diplomatic ties, it's truly dead). A dying civ can continue to get dwarves up to the normal limits.

I embarked on a distant island in a dying civ that only had 4 members (according to legends viewer) - by the end of that fort, we had 200, almost all migrants. The wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Civilization#Dead_and_struggling_civilizations) seems to corroborate this.

9th Hematite: The possessed Bomrek is just standing in the middle of the dining hall, unmoving. Maybe he doesn't have the right workshop. He has clothier and bookbinder skills, so I'll build those.

16th Hematite: The clothier shop is under construction. As copper is being produced, I'm ordering the production of ten more picks so the miner corps can be expanded.

I've decided to abandon building the library in the cliffside and am instead expanding that chamber for something else. Some of you may be able to see where this is going.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

18th Hematite: That worked.

I've begun an initiative to beautify the dining halls and main work areas, as most dwarves will spend their time there.

Also:

Excellent! The tradition of Democracy is strong at Runlance! Note that this dwarf was elected from the common folk of the miners, rather than the corrupt ranks of the bourgeoise. Hail Mayor Momuz

Although excess is a despicable habit of the capitalist, a small office complex shall be excavated so that he may better fulfil his duties:

What could it be? It was made using a clothier shop, so it should be some useful piece of armor.it's going to be an indestructible sock, calling it now

We have also begun a Program of Occupational Exploration, encouraging dwarves to utilize skills they may have developed (read: I went into Dwarf Therapist and clicked every box with a number bigger than 5). This is sure to aid productivity.

26th Hematite: Migrants arrive again. It appears our civilization is not as dead as it seemed. I notice that many of our old fortresses are only lightly guarded by goblin troops. Perhaps it will be possible to rebuild?

Also, who ordered fifty bags? I am cancelling this.

28th Hematite:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A cave spider silk vest. Fair enough. Not the most useful artifact, but still...

2nd Malachite: Mayor Momuz requests the construction of floodgates! A most useful suggestion. I'm sure these can be put to some use.

7th Malachite: With a mayor elected, we finally have the authority to grant this petition.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

don't know why you need a mayor to rubberstamp this, pointless bureaucracy...

I'll put them in the most appropriate place - right by the farms.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15th Galena: Even with our new riches, most of our people still sleep in a crowded dormitory. Unacceptable! I have chosen a suitably quiet layer to build new bedrooms.

Post by: blueturtle1134 on October 02, 2021, 01:02:24 am
The main stairwell, which SHOULD be up/down stairs, is not in fact up/down stairs. It is only down stairs. The bedrooms, skybridge, and farming section are completely cut off from the rest of the fort, and have been for months now. That explains the starving dwarves. Only those of us lucky enough to be trapped in the upper section had access to the food.

:o

That's a new design feature, one I certainly didn't make.

It definitely wasn't like that from the start, as if down stairs were mined to begin with, the miner wouldn't be able to construct all the bedrooms. Some later overseer must have knocked out the up stairs, cutting the fort in half. I demand an investigation of this and I swear that whoever is responsible will be subject to the atom-guillotine!

I mean, after we deal with the goblin wrestler. I still have no idea how it got in. The farm areas are completely sealed. I hope goblins haven't mastered the power of teleportation.

17th Limestone: I have ordered that the correct stairs be built.

The dwarves trapped on the skybridge are still in danger from the goblin. I hope they can jump down from the down stair. The military is waiting at the bottom and can certainly take on one wrestler.

The goblin is chasing miner Ingish.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It appears Ingish has a slight advantage in terms of speed, and is getting away.

The goblin is now going after another comrade - coincidentally also named Ingish. Unfortunately, the other dwarves have fled to the side with no exit.

I will have the miner knock open this wall to give them a better chance.

Ingish has fallen. The goblin is standing there. It seems like she hasn't seen the other dwarves.

The stair isn't getting built.

Several dwarves have been cornered in the reactor chamber.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Meanwhile, the stair isn't built. Everyone is off getting drunk!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fine, I'll have miners dig a new stair.

Urist Atirrovod has arrived to pull the lever.

The reactor begins to drain.

We were too slow.

The useless louts in the main hall have finally begun building the stairs.

However this goblin got in, it doesn't appear that more are following, but I don't want to take any chances. There are only six goblins left, none of them armed. I've ordered the Keys of Carnage to prepare for a sally.

The men are ready.

The gate is lowered!

2nd Sandstone: Dwarves rush into the sunshine, most of them looking to bring wood to the wood stockpiles now that they're actually accessible. Meanwhile, more migrants have arrived.

Ahhhhh all that labor enabling. I intentionally have dorfs with specific weapon preferences dabbling weaponsmith and had them do non moodable labors to increase chances of an epic artifact...
Also to re-prime the reactor you need to close the drain and then refill it. If it doesn't start when mostly full try opening the drain for a little bit. It should hopefully just start spinning again.
Might be worth it to make a swimatorium and add escape ramps for he dorfs who fall in.

Have you used any of the irrigated spot yet?

I'm honestly wondering about the benefits and drawbacks of socializing stuff. The drawback, obviously, is that you don't get Legendaries as quickly because the XP is distributed among hundreds of dwarves. The benefit is that you can do big things fast because there's so many dwarves. Although I honestly think the dabbling miners aren't doing much, the legendaries mine basically instantly.

And then the further drawback is that the entire fort is doing whatever has the highest priority.

Yeah, I should add a escape ramp. Don't think that would have saved Meng though. I think he didn't know how to swim.

Honestly, the mistake was letting a goblin get into the reactor room.

Have you used any of the irrigated spot yet?

We have hundreds of plump helmets and almost no spawn, so I'm waiting for people to eat them first. However, now that I say that, I realize that a lot more people are going to be eating them now that I've reconnected the other half of the fort. Shoot.

10th Obsidian: I finally remembered to start planting things in the underground farm.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Looks like some of the mud has dried up. There should still be enough for our use, but we may want to re-irrigate at some point.

Gulag efficiency is suffering because the gulagees (currently only Blue 1) have to have stone carried to them to be productive. I wonder if I should include the stone stockpile in the gulag as well, or maybe add a mine.

Speaking of which:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Honestly, the gulag is less of a punishment than you'd expect.

20th Obsidian: Ordering 100 doors was a bad idea. I've cancelled the 13 that remain.

1st Granite: Alright, it appears that my term is up. (Yes, we do have term limits here. This isn't China.)

I may as well reveal what I've been working on so far.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is a water-based superweapon consisting of a large chamber hollowed out into the cliff and two outlet pipes. When the lever is pulled, the bridges open, and the resulting deluge of water will hopefully sweep away or drown any attacking armies. Since it fires larger payloads than a Failcannon, I shall term this the Losemortar. (Especially because firing it is going to cause someone to lose, either us or them.)

The weapon itself is finished, I just have no way to fill it. Filling it by hand is pitifully slow:

I've begun work on a pump stack, but I'm waiting on the giant corkscrews and pipe segments. The water will be drawn from the same plumbing as the reactor:

Steps remaining to activate it:

I ended up putting the library here, but it still needs tables and paper. I think we have pig tails, but you'll have to press them, and also designate this.

That's a really annoying bug (feature?) with trees. If you chop a tree with an empty tile below the tile the tree was on becomes empty space. I try to always make my farms 2 z levels below the surface so that I never need to worry about that. You can build a floor over the stuff.

PART THE SECOND

Now that the siege is safely locked outside, and we are isolated from them and can proceed in relative peace, a time of restless boredom occured. I have turned my attentions to the caverns, making sure that everything us up to scratch. On the way, I found some interesting accounting records about fungiwood logs. Seems odd to me, but who am I to know?

There was a misconstructed section of stairacse wall, and now I think I know what caused this. Upon removing the offending walls, the most odd sight struck me: The most generic tree that can be. I can only describe it as a tree, the most tree-est of trees, but that is all I could glean.

The lower bridges

How could I have forgotten?

Quick! We can still save some more! Blue II will be in charge of the rescue attempt, seeing as the idiot went down the stairs twice

(confession: I forgot to screenshot this bit)

Blue II and the seveb remainin dwarves rush down into the depths. They manage to reach safety as the beast feeds on the king. They have sealed the lower stairs and are carving a passageway to home.

I have not completed what I had hoped, and more perished in my year than I could ever predict. However, we are safe now.  May our next year be prosperous.

I advise the next overseer to test the Lever Room, after all mechanisms are connected, of course

Comrades! This past year has been a great challenge to us all. Though it is tragic that many brave dwarves, including our founder Ryukan, not including zultan as the king was disgusting bourgeoisie have died to the undead invaders or the ferocious beast from the depths, Runlance still stands. We shall rebuild and we shall have vengeance! For Dwarfkind! For the Revolution! For Runlance!

unpauses

2nd Granite: What's this?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The undead have quit their siege and are withdrawing from our lands. Victory, brave comrades!

also, the macro I used to comrade did something hilarious to Gwolf

6th Granite: With the undead gone, I have lowered the bridge so the outside world can be accessed, and the dead buried.

...or maybe not...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There are two crow man zombies still in the area. These are attacking dwarves that try to exit.

They aren't doing any lasting damage, but watching the dwarves run away in fear is humiliating.

7th Granite: The area is absolutely covered in bronze and bismuth bronze bolts.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've unforbidden them so they can be collected for our own use. Melting them down could give us plenty of bronze.

10th Granite: How are we out of rock?

2nd Slate: oh, good

10th Slate: It's time to restart the Water Reactor

11th Slate: Excellent, another mood!

14th Slate: Oh for the love of Armok - I didn't open the plumbing fill gate. I've just been draining the plumbing into the reactor for four days.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

23rd Slate:

Now the fill can really begin.

24th Slate: With the military decimated by the undead invasion, providing for the defense of the fortress is an urgent matter. The solution is obvious.

The military has been socialized!

Yep, I drafted everyone.stole this idea from Loud Whispers so it must be good

The last survivor of the previous military gets promoted to militia commander. For the captains, I first chose the two dwarves with leadership skills... and then just grabbed whoever I felt was most useless. The Keys of Carnage have been populated with everyone in the fortress that actually knows how to use a weapon; it can remain as our dedicated military unit; everyone else is just getting a bit of basic training in case of emergency. Squads are split between axedwarves and hammerdwarves with one archery unit (The Oily Bodices).

I also made an effort to fill in the other noble appointed public servant positions that I feel we need. Udil also gets a cushy captain of the guard posting as a reward for pulling the lever last year.

The "reserve" squads rotate training two months a year. Since I grabbed the Keys of Carnage from everywhere, I fear I've grabbed some essential dwarves such as me in that group, so it's been set to train on alternating months.

Unfortunately I don't have anything better than copper to make the equipment out of (and we're going to need a LOT of copper). I've ordered the miners to find more.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also pulled some strings to make sure that all the named dwarves (besides Blue 2 and Tricmagic, who are in the Keys of Carnage because they can actually fight) are in The Good Picks.

11th Felsite: The Water Reactor appears to have successfully restarted!

13th Felsite: The best part of socializing Mining is designating an area to be dug and watching the entire thing flash at once

Anyway, this is going to be the area for an expansion of the forg-

...

We don't have anvils

And we can't make any more because we don't have iron.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

28th Granite: Charcoal is becoming a bottleneck in equipment production. I've made a manager order to make it automatically.

Also, I'm going to go ahead and fill the pump stack input with water, in the hopes that manually pumping it up will be possible.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've assigned pump operating to dwarves that don't have useful skills (>=5) in any other area.

4th Hematite: The fuck do you think you're doing.

8th Hematite: I made a mistake.

Leak isn't too severe, though. I think I just forgot to put in doors on that level. I'll remedy this immediately.

10th Hematite: Manual operation works, it seems. Only the older stairwell is filling up so far.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

13th Hematite: Some idiots are trying to retrieve the stones in the water chamber. I've forbidden this as well. (Maybe those will be ejected when the weapon fires).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

20th Hematite: Some leak-plugging is needed.

The red is blood from someone that must have slipped on water and bashed his head open. It's been washed all through the system now.

25th Hematite: The device doesn't fill fast when manually pumped, but it does fill.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

9th Malachite: Alright, now this is a problem.

Water's rising higher in the pump access stairwell. I'm not sure how - it shouldn't be able to - but I'm blocking the stairwell off.

Mechanical operation is almost complete. I'm just waiting on one more log.

11th Malachite: More leaks.

13th Malachite: It's too deep to plug. I'll wall it off instead.

14th Malachite: This idiot decided that the correct course of action was to run in, grab a stone from the wet side of the wall, and wall it, thus ensuring that he would be trapped.

I've corrected this.

15th Malachite: Thanks to that guy, the last safe place to wall off is now here.

Humiliatingly, the nearest material is donkey soap. I hope the dwarf on the wrong side gets out, though.

18th Malachite: Luckily, that worked.

21st Malachite: Is he trapped?

I dug the wall and he left immediately. Guess he was.

26th Malachite: The final axle has been placed, and automated pumping has begun!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When I built that last axle, though, the log that came up was black-cap. Are they chopping in the caverns? I don't think they're chopping in the caverns. oh wait I have autochop on

I realize I'm a fair bit behind schedule, but I was unexpectedly busy this week. I should have the whole thing done in a day or two.

You can make anvils from adamantine.

An excellent suggestion, comrade! The only flaw is that we have no adamantine!

why am I in a military I don't wanna dieeee

I mean, comrades, in order to fulfill my duty of manager for the glorious revolution, it is with a heavy heart that I must formally request to be relieved of the hounor of serving in a military unit lest I perish and the managerial archives are lost

Military service is the duty of all comrades! Do not fear, you will not be called into battle except in times of desperation, and in those times, who would not be happy to give their life for the defense of the fortress? No exception shall be granted for those in managerial positions! The notion that administrators are of greater worth than the common worker is an odious invention of the bourgeoise! I have however placed all the named dwarves into a squad which I may ensure sees less action.

Also did you test the levers

I have full confidence in Comrade Gwolfski's ability to set up levers correctly! I should probably test them just to be safe.

13th Galena: I wonder what this will be.

20th Galena: It will never, NEVER cease to amaze me that we've pulled up ridiculous quantities of gold and silver, yet not a speck of iron or coal. How? How did we pick the perfect spot to hamstring our metallurgy so completely? We'll be stuck on copper gear until we have adamantine!

On the other hand, the dwarves seem to be settling in to their new quarters.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

26th Galena: It seems the main obstacle to the filling of the water weapon is the rate at which water can reach the pump stack.

I'm unsure how this could possibly be enhanced.

13th Limestone: Finally, a carav- FUCK

They must have passed by because of all the cage traps by the door? I'll try constructing the trade depot outside, see if that gets their attention.

15th Limestone: Well, at least the pack animals stopped. Let's see what they've got to sell.

18th Limestone: These guys are just having a chat in an unused room.

Don't we have a meeting hall? Let me see what I can do to make that more attractive.

19th Limestone: I've commissioned a huge amount of crafts to use as trading material.

We can also sell the gold bars, but it'd be more efficient to forge them into crafts first. I think that requires charcoal though.

I thought we were the Mountainhome?

22nd Limestone: I ask that the gold bars be brought to the depot and half the fort shows up.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here we go. Nine gold bars buys us four anvils, plus some other odds and ends I want. Sadly they don't have logs, which is what we really need.

24th Limestone: Our moody dwarf isn't doing anything. Let's see what the holdup is.

We do have some cut gems, so this should resolve itself soon enough.

27th Limestone: in seconds, the walls are red with blood.

Greetings, Comrades! I am Blueturtle III! Due to his criminal mishandling of the artifact creation process, Blueturtle II has been sent to gulag!

Since the Gulag has become something of a community work area over time, and cancellation spam gets caused if a dwarf is burrowed there, the only consequence of being sent to gulag is being forced to sleep in these beds.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

not sure how I feel about the fort being led by a dwarf that's offended at any show of emotion just because she was caught in the rain Silence, comrade!

2nd Sandstone: While we've got the gemstones at the trade depot, we'd better sell them. I've offloaded them in exchange for a bunch of musical instruments, fruits, and parchment.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The purpose of this level is indecipherable. I've ordered the stairs built back into up/down stairs and an effort to immediately be made to reach the magma sea and adamantine spires.

10th Sandstone: I've orderedbWcb the dwarves to chop everything in sight. Hopefully this influx of wood makes charcoal production faster.

26th Sandstone:

Time to see if the levers work.

Wait... was this never linked up? We'll close the inner gate as well just to be sure.

A dwarf came by and pulled just the upper and lower levers, leaving the inner one unpulled. Thankfully the forgotten beast seems content to kill giant moles for the time being.

For whatever reason, the dwarf assigned to the last lever was far beneath the earth.

I'm ordering the checkpoints sealed as well as additional insurance.

27th Sandstone: Why are you down there?

28th Sandstone: He was bringing something back up the stair, so at least he was going up. Which is more than I can say about this poor fool, who was heading down to collect webs. At least the gate closed.

Meanwhile, we've reached Cavern 3

19th Timber: what

I've just begun the project to dig below the third cavern layer. Maybe this has something to do with it?

22nd Timber: We've reached the final solid layer, below which lies only semi-molten rock. The goal now is to find the adamantine veins in this layer, which we will do by a very simple procedure.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Namely, mining out the entire thing.

24th Timber: The miners are currently occupied with removing all these up-ramps, but once they're done with that, we'll get on to the dig project.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here's the reason for all those ramps being removed: A grand moat, across the north side of the canyon our fortress resides in. This should be useful against further invasions of the undead. It's not yet filled with water, but can be easily enough.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

25th Timber: With that task complete, off the miners go to destroy an entire layer of stone.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(they actually went to mine ore veins, but I upped the dig's priority and off they go)

It's also come to my attention that some migrants don't have their mining labor enabled. I've re-socialized mining and masonry, enabling it for everyone.

1st Moonstone: You know what, I should have worked on the moat first.

It's goblin season again. Alert sounded.

3rd Moonstone: It appears everyone is in the fort, except for this fool who's carrying a rock.

The goblins are advancing on the hilltop this time.

Oh shit, the animals.

There's no time to bring them in now. I'm closing the door.

4th Moonstone: The rock-carrier meets his fate.

I'm getting spammed with reports of warm rock found at the dig site.

11th Moonstone: Mining out this layer concluded, finding only a small pocked not surrounded by lava. Unfortunate.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We'll mine the next layer up instead.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

20th Moonstone: Ah, here's something interesting.

This layer finished as well, the space barely any larger.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'll move to one layer below the third cavern, but given that large seconds of the third cavern are warm, I don't have high hopes.

24th Moonstone:

Whelp, time to seal the second cavern too.

25th Moonstone: Lever pulled, cavern sealed.

4th Opal: Only this much space is non-magma on that layer.

I'm at a loss for how to access adamantine. It must be in the third cavern layer. I'll get a squad ready and explore it.

At least we can channel out an area and make magma forges We can't even do that, as we technically haven't discovered magma yet (bullshit, it's right there)

7th Opal:

EAT THE GOBLINS

It can fly. This will be an interesting fight.

As expected, it leaves pulverized goblins in its wake.

8th Opal: Delphanso died of depression.

The goblins got some good hits in on the hill titan, but I don't have high hopes for mutual annihilation here.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They have managed to ground it, though.

They appear to be kicking it into submission.

9th Opal: BWAHAHAHAHA

11th Opal: They appear to be celebrating their victory.

I don't think the military can contest them, even though we have armor and weapons, we're not trained to use them. I could dig out the moat, but that would require opening the bridge.

OOC: I will never understand the military window

19th Opal: Forget it, I've got a better idea.

26th Opal: I'm building a bridge to above the Goblin camp and dropping stuff on them from above. Getting the blocks there was a whole-fort event.

7th Obsidian: The bridge begins to take shape. (Those bins are filled with blocks)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

12th Obsidian: Inevitable.

Also, we're out of blocks. I've had the masons build more but we might need to use raw rock for a bit.

14th Obsidian: The Goblins have gathered at the foot of the skybridge.

I don't think they've gotten in, but it's causing cancellation spam. I think this makes my job easier, though.

16th Obsidian: This is stupid. You know they can't get to you, right?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

25h Obsidian: oh crap

I decided to build a staircase to the top of the skybridge to get another area to drop stuff from, only to remember WHY we don't have access to the top of the skybridge: it's connected to the outside.

Delphonso dies again.

Fuck it. I'm retreating behind the doors and hoping it holds.

26th Obsidian: F

I'm ordering the main stairwell sealed off with donkey soap, stupidly enough. If the top layer falls, our comrades in the depths will at least have a chance.

I stupidly sent in the squad with all the player characters, hence all the deaths.

They died valiantly defending their people.

I finally realized that ordering the squad to move back keeps it a squad, and thus they try to keep fighting. I disbanded it and they finally retreated.

Theyflower, enraged, stays to hold them off.

The doors are sealed. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Another dwarf trapped outside.

Only a few dwarves died, but because I forgot which squad was full of player characters most of those were named dwarves, which means that included many of our best miners and engravers.

The loss of the far section and skybridge is not ideal, but with the underground farm working well we should be able to get through. Most of our food stockpiles were there though. Careful management will be necessary to avoid starvation.

Wood is the real problem here. The first and second caverns are blocked off by forgotten beasts, and the surface is gone because of goblins. Without wood we can't make charcoal, so we can't make metal weapons and armor and can't fight back. The next overseer should either open the third cavern layer or somehow make the game actually "discover" the magma sea so we can build magma forges.

Anyway, all yours Metruption

Post by: Metruption on October 25, 2021, 04:53:48 pm
Spring completed. My plan is to make a magma pumpstack that can fill some magma cistern for us to do magma crafting over and also to fill that big water trap with and turn it into a magma trap. It'll be really tight, but I might be able to do it in a single year if I basically ignore everything else...

Glass. I love glass. We need more glass. I went to the commons and spoke of the wonders of glass. Everyone was so downtrodden and sad they listened to my speeches of the joys of glass and decided that I should simply be in charge.
Good. We will have more glass. Glass and magma. The magma whispers to me.

We have many cage traps at the entrance, more than one for each goblin. We should let them in and capture them. An offering to the magma. No! Don't go out there and fight. Fools!

They won, and the rest of the goblins are retreating. Victory!

We need a tunnel, lots of pumps. Dig it! And glass, so much glass.

Dig out the warm rock. We need magma. Adamintine? Good for someone else. I only care about magma and Glass.

Pumps... many pumps. Some will make mistakes and burn as punishment. Let the magma judge them.

Farmers? That's not magma. That's not glass. No.

Someone fell into a mood? Oh well. Give them a mason workshop.

Summer is here, they still sit at that workshop asking for cloth. Maybe animal cloth. We don't have any.
Title: Re: The Incompetence of Runlance - Year 1505 - OVERSEERS NEEDED!! APPLY INSIDE!!
Post by: Metruption on October 28, 2021, 04:32:02 pm
The pumpstack is delayed because one of the dwarves died in the most inconvenient possible spot at the bottom of the whole thing and now his clothes are in the way.

And now there's the summer siege. Drat. The skyway still isn't fully closed off. I'm going to hope they all get killed by traps by the entrance...

I've setup half of the army at the skyway entrance an the other half at the main entrance. A few dwarves decide to peek the door, go out, and die. Heroes. They are all heroes. Many goblins are now captured in cage traps. It looks like the rest are retreating, but some of their archer are taking potshots at one of our Yaks which leaves a trail of blood in its wake.

image entrance_prisoners
(https://i.imgur.com/muy2tsT.png)

We're down to only forty-five comrades.
The dwarf who was at that mason's workshop asking for something we didn't have just went berzerk, make that forty-four.
I've decided to build some coffins in the skybridge after finally sealing it off. May it exist as a memorial to incompetence.

image memorial

Going to start a sideproject to my magmapumpstakc megaproject, an archery range where we can shoot at goblin prisoners.

image rang0

The reactor is full! I'm going to try filling the water flooding trap again from the river now that I can close off the reactor. Seeing how pulling the old "fill the well" lever would flood much of the fort with water I also opted to make plu_out_4 connect to the well for a more convenient and less catastrohpic refilling.
Note for future users of the pumbling system, please reserve at least one plu_out for an extension that can have more outlets

image plu thing

Autumn is here. We're halfway done making all of the screws but didn't start until the end of spring. The first third of the pumpstack is laid out. If we do manage to finish it in time it will be very close.

image autumn end

Oh boy, the yearly caravan. Let's see what they have, hopefully something more useful than these crafts.... where did they go?
(ooc: I tried zooming onto a merchant animal and it took me to a black screen. I think that something's buggy with the map and wandering it incorrectly sends you to the shadow realm)
While they disappared one of the dwarves grabbed a gem and carved it all funny.
Strange...

As part of memorializsing the skybridge I have decided to make a more direct path from the old farming and food storage area to the fortess proper. Work also begins on a magma plumbing system similar in design to the water one.

A few crundles get into our fortress... somehow. I don't know and I don't care how. I only care about glass and magma. That can be someone else's problem.

Good news and bad news. Word of this fortress has spread.

Oh fuck, oh no. Another forgotton beast we're doo- Oh. It's just in the cave with the other one and they're fighting... and the new one is dead.
Alrighty then.

Winter is here and progress is moving along smoothly. I'm sure nothing wi-FUCK FUCK FUCK.

Everyone inside. Let's hope the cage traps work... on second thought we should seal ourselves off. That is way too many undead.

A crundle just decapitated a forgotten beast
.

There was an opening in a roof and a few dwarves died because of it. Someone should move our food stockpiles, but it's not going to be me.

We are finally constructing the beautiful gabbro and glass pumps. Soon they will be filled with magma. Soon the magma will purify those unwelcome undead visitors. Someone went into a mood and claimed a carpenter workshop. This could be a problem seeing how right now we have no wood and there are dozens of undead outside our fortress. The life of this dwarf depends on my magma pumpstack. Work continues until spring, at which time work will continue to continue.

It's the seventh year of this fortress, and what a grueling one it will be. The undead still lurk just outside our walled hill, but in here we are safe.

The magma plumbing system was all hooked up. In the process of testing every lever I realized the drain bridge never closes. Fixing that.

It's all working now, completely dry and waiting for the glorious magma...
Summer is here and the magma stack is nearing completion. Only a few more pumps and then we can start filling up the magma plumbing... yes. Yes! My greatest work is complete. Now to see if it works...

It works! Time to fill up our magma plumbing.
Wait! The access bridge to the magma plumbing system is made of granite... that would melt and flood the fortress with magma.
NO! Fix it!
A forgotten beast came into a web strewn cavern. We're sealed off and that's not our problem.

We need wood to connect the pumps which will fill the great magma vault we shall use to destroy the hordes of undead which besiege our fortress. It's time to briefly open one of the caverns and obtain some precious wood.
image axel neede
(https://i.imgur.com/wW24nnK.png)

We're peacefully chopping away... this feels too easy.

The magma plumbing is hot and full of that glorius magma!

It's now fall. Time to fill the great cistern.

image fill1
(https://i.imgur.com/f4Qj5UV.png)

There's an elk bird in there... for now.

While that fills I'm going to expand the power plant. Our current power load is at nearly half capacity.

There was a caged dwarf and I decided to let them out so that they could contribute to our wonderful soci- FUCK IT'S UNDEAD!

Now it's just dead.

Strange... I feel a time distortion. It's winter and there's some dwarves that are dead that weren't and we still have that undead dwarf caged. The plans are all proceeding on schedule aside from the archery range. Now that we have armored goblin prisoners to use as targets some bone bolts wouldn't be terrible as range ammo.
The magma lance is filling up nicely.

Soon when the weapon is fully primed the undead will be baptized in the wonderfu- WHAT? They just left? I guess we can just save it for later... And open the front door so we can get wood!

Some dwarf grabbed some stuff and is going crazy with them just as some migrants arrived for indoctrination. I explained to them the beauty of magma and they have joined my cult.

Many of the dead invaders outside were well equipped. Our militia are taking what scraps are left and equipping themselves far better than we could equip them.

That dwarf who took over a mason workshop is shouting about needing bones. There's bones but that dwarf doesn't want them. Too bad. Went insane.
Spring here and I can feel a new age upon us...

Also, there's a new lever.

We suppose We could take over for a Turn after this.

We can't promise Screenshots of Everything, but a monthly Log-taking is definitely doable.

Worst case scenario, alternate reality forts.  Since the goal is the Preservation and Growth of Dwarvenkind, that is a GOOD thing.

'Personal Log of HMD Majesty, Ruler of Runlance' is a pig tail scroll written by Her Most Dread Majesty, the Titanna Below.  The writing is on her time as the ruler of Runlance.  The prose is as follows:

Entry 9ESqr

The Dwarfs appear to have misplaced their Calendar.  Under the Circumstances, We are not entirely surprised.

Our initial Look-Through has revealed that one of the Fortress Staircases ends directly in what is now Part of the Magma Sea.

(https://i.postimg.cc/c482HR2G/Screenshot-2021-11-23-231340.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We shall need to have that fixed.

Checking the Supplies, We have learned that the Fortress is at least reasonably supplied with Food and Drink.

Our Livestock is basically nonexistent, which is annoying but not a Disaster, and on Our Way up from the Magma Sea We took note of the Fortress Silk gathering Area.

A closer Look at the Magma Sea showed a troubling Number of uncontrolled Breeches.  Sealing these is one of Our highest Priorities.

(https://i.postimg.cc/g2F56wbX/Screenshot-2021-11-23-232725.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Currently, the other Action We are prioritizing is setting up Our domestic Magma Usage.

(https://i.postimg.cc/65Y28Zvz/Screenshot-2021-11-23-233713.png) (https://postimages.org/)

For some Reason, the Fortress Bookkeeper had no Office, which We easily solved, there is a melancholic Dwarf wandering the Place, and Someone hooked a Lever to a Cage containing an ambulatory Corpse.

And finally, We have marked the various non-Citizen Corpses and Skeletons lying around Outside for dumping into the oversized Magma Cistern.

Entry o7AA4

One of Our Dwarfs is nearing Insanity.  Said Dwarf does not appear to be violent, so there is little for Us to do.

Also, We seem to be having Supply Chain trouble for some unknown Reason, and We have dismantled some unused Machinery.

Lastly, We are beginning Preparations for disposing of Our Prisoners.

Entry A5PTC

The Transition from Fuel to Magma is proceeding without Difficulty.

(https://i.postimg.cc/nhrsBLKx/Screenshot-2021-11-24-095016.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We have already torn down all non-Magma Furnaces and Forges, which appears to have been all of them.

One of the odd Dwarfs who worship Magma has been taken by a Mood.  Fortunately, the Dwarf in Question is only asking for Things We have in Stock.

Although, one does wonder how the other Cultists will take the non-Smithing skill, given We had to persuade them to haul Things.  As a religious Woman Ourself, We do understand the Desire for Purity, but any reasonable Religion worth maintaining ought to make Allowances for Circumstances.

Oh, and We have spotted a Trio of wild Elk Birds roaming one of the Floors.  So far, they have done no Harm so We are going to deal with them later.

Entry 080cN

The Cultist has created a wooden Figurine of a Dwarf killing another Dwarf.  It is very well made, but one does wonder about the History of the Fortress.

(https://i.postimg.cc/3N9RDMdW/Screenshot-2021-11-24-102424.png) (https://postimg.cc/WqFjQHmP)

Our Magma-based Industries are progressing toward Completion at a respectable Rate.

(https://i.postimg.cc/k43D0F0M/Screenshot-2021-11-24-103348.png) (https://postimages.org/)

For some Reason We have two goblin Corpses inhabiting Our Cages?  We are uncertain if they were dead last Time We checked.

The Refuse Stockpile is a worrisome Distance from the Gate, so We have created a new One which is much closer.

(https://i.postimg.cc/rwHDJLgr/Screenshot-2021-11-24-103909.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Entry 8OjZI

Migrants have arrived.  For some Reason, not all of their Livestock is behaving normally, which is making it a bit tricky to both get an accurate Count of Our new Population and access Our Livestock Situation.

We have received a Petition for a Guild Hall.  While it is Our standard Practice to grant and fulfill such Requests, We will need to ascertain whether We have a suitable Space to carve one out.

As it turns out, there is enough Space for two such Halls.  Which is good, because We have just received another Petition.  Above and Below, why are these Dwarfs so strange?

(https://i.postimg.cc/8CrjXnnn/Screenshot-2021-11-24-111619.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Entry kWbUr

We have fully transitioned to fueless Industry!

(https://i.postimg.cc/qRsg46rs/Screenshot-2021-11-24-111750.png) (https://postimages.org/)

The Fortress Population stands at Seventy-Three at Present, with Sixteen Animals.

We have discovered why Body Disposal was not progressing as We had expected.  Who digs out a Magma Cistern and doesn't provide Access to the Top?

We have also moved into the first Stage of Prisoner Disposal.

(https://i.postimg.cc/XqnqJNNT/Screenshot-2021-11-24-115231.png) (https://postimages.org/)

While the Cistern is not quite how We would prefer it, it ought to suffice for this.

Meanwhile, We will need to deal with a Lack of Bags.

Entry gyVpL

As it turns out, there would be enough Bags if the Fortress was actually making Glass Objects.  One does wonder about the collective Sanity of these Dwarfs, although the Fortress itself is merely poorly laid out as opposed to utterly stupid.

Body Disposal is now progressing, if slowly, as is the Contruction of proper Guild Halls.

We now have some steel bars!  We do so enjoy not having to concern Ourselves with Fuel.

Entry NPAnt

We have fulfilled the Request for a Farmers Guild Hall.

(https://i.postimg.cc/1RK4dFJP/Screenshot-2021-11-24-124814.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Our Engravers must have done very good Work.

We have begun using up Sand, so hopefully We will fewer cancelled Sand Collection Jobs, and We have started regular Clothes Production.

And We have just found a dead Yak in Our Hospital.  Oh dear.

Entry rkJQ7

We have decided that waiting for the Cistern to be perfect would take far too long, so We have begun disposing of the Prisoners now.

(https://i.postimg.cc/L66hFsbP/Screenshot-2021-11-24-125956.png) (https://postimages.org/)

And now that We have conducted a Test, thankfully with mere Recruits, We have discovered that it is possible for a Dwarf to be interrupted by by the Goblin the Dwarf is pitting.  Which is, as one might say, a Problem.

Since the escaped Goblin was a Recruit, and We removed all Equipment from the Prisoners, it was easily killed as soon as it left the Area of the Cistern.

(https://i.postimg.cc/hPyvDqk5/Screenshot-2021-11-24-131408.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We will now need to consider whether to continue using this Method of disposing of Prisoners.  Although, it is no less safe then using Prisoners for Training.

It really is appalling just how many Bodies have piled up.  What if a Necromancer came by?

Entry PP4CP

It is now Summer.  We have taken Care of this Fortress for a Season now, and We dare to say We have done well.  No Dwarf has died as a Result of Our Rule, We have greatly reduced the Fortress' Dependence on the Outside World, and We have moved all Animals to the Inside of the Fortress.

However, to truly make venturing Outside optional, We shall need to create a completely sealed Tunnel for Trade.

That is Our next Priority.

Entry tVjRb

A goblin Siege has turned up, which is remarkably inconvenient.

(https://i.postimg.cc/FHYR1Bms/Screenshot-2021-11-24-135826.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Particularly given that We are still in the Process of cleaning up the various Bits.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Cx9K8sLC/Screenshot-2021-11-24-140034.png) (https://postimages.org/)

It would appear that whoever was removing Ramps missed one.

(https://i.postimg.cc/CKDxsnz3/Screenshot-2021-11-24-140906.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We may end up forced to abandon a Dwarf.

(https://i.postimg.cc/xC2Txjmc/Screenshot-2021-11-24-141033.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We successfully convinced the Dwarf to abandon the Log, so all Dwarfs have made it Inside.  Now We just need the Gate closed before the Goblins make it as well.

Which has occurred!

(https://i.postimg.cc/FRVF2tbG/Screenshot-2021-11-24-143045.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Now We may consider potential Solutions to Our Goblin Problem at Our Leisure.

Entry JiUio

It appears only thirteen Goblins got sent to besiege Us.  Given this, We have decided to take advantage of Our greater Numbers and attack them, even though for some Reason the Cultists were certain We had to drain the Magma Cistern.  Such a Course of Action would be wholly impractical, particularly since currently most of the Goblins are higher then the Level in the Cistern.

We have assigned all adult Dwarfs to Squads.  Now We are waiting on equipment pickup.

Entry GafpY

We have begun the Attack

(https://i.postimg.cc/D0ffhCBh/Screenshot-2021-11-24-150404.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Found a goblin Squad.  We are ill-pleased with the Numbers initially engaging, as this is probably the Squad which contains Lashers.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Wz9N1MHk/Screenshot-2021-11-24-150625.png) (https://postimages.org/)

As We expected, a Dwarf has died.

(https://i.postimg.cc/HW3szgkk/Screenshot-2021-11-24-151247.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We shall commission a Slab immediately.

There has been three more Deaths.

(https://i.postimg.cc/02Q5HBzd/Screenshot-2021-11-24-151334.png) (https://postimages.org/)

And another.  This is a tad excessive, We may wish to consider implementing Our standard Citizen Milita Training.

(https://i.postimg.cc/L6b4d3fd/Screenshot-2021-11-24-151537.png) (https://postimages.org/)

And the goblin Recruits enter the Fray!

(https://i.postimg.cc/bvXzrY33/Screenshot-2021-11-24-151952.png) (https://postimages.org/)

And now the only thing left is to clean up.

(https://i.postimg.cc/RZJSvJQW/Screenshot-2021-11-24-152308.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Entry II56z

Seven Dwarfs have died on the Field.  Fourteen more have been hospitalized, two of which We expect to die in Hospital.

(https://i.postimg.cc/hG9KdFYg/Screenshot-2021-11-24-154230.png) (https://postimages.org/)

This is a completely unacceptable ratio of goblin to dwarfen Casualties.  We will begin overhauling Training at once.

Entry 6sQnU

We have a order for rock Table which repeats daily, with no conditions.  Why.  We have over a Hundred Tables, probably due to this order, We can stop making tables for a bit.

Checking the Job Orders has revealed that We also have two identical Soap orders.  Heavens Above and Below, how was that missed?

It would appear that We are limiting Food Overstock by letting it rot and wither, which is completely unnecessary and speaks of poor design.  Furthermore, We have fed over twice this Number of Dwarfs on perhaps One-Fifth this Number of Farm Tiles.  However, We feel any Reform of the Farming should wait a bit.

Entry ABePY

We have finished the Trade Tunnel, and now all We need to to is link all the Bridges up and build the Depot.  We may even have it running before the Caravan arrives.

(https://i.postimg.cc/XJ44KHM5/Screenshot-2021-11-24-165004.png) (https://postimages.org/)

All the injured Dwarfs have left the Hospital, hopefully without Infections.

Mining out the new Training Room is proceeding quite well, and -

Oh! Migrants!

(https://i.postimg.cc/769DK3DW/Screenshot-2021-11-24-165700.png) (https://postimages.org/)

And now another Dwarf has gone moody.  Ah well, Everything on the List is in Stock.

Entry L1fEu

So it turns out dead Crowmen can fly, and the single Crowman in the Cages was dead.  We presume they can fly while alive as well, but at the moment that is entirely irrelevant.

And now the Crowman is not only dead but inanimate.  Three or four Injuries, no Fatalities.

Entry D6AYp

Further testing of Our Prisoner Disposal System shows that it works perfectly so long as We only pit one Prisoner at a Time, and use some other Method for Prisoners capable of Flight.

And, as it turns out, Sacred Apexes which are able to fling Dwarfs about by Magic.  While they have not been reported yet, We lost two Dwarfs before Mestthos Amazedmirror tricked it into falling into Magma.

We have succeeded in providing a Craftdwarfs Guild Hall,

(https://i.postimg.cc/brvPWZwN/Screenshot-2021-11-24-181944.png) (https://postimages.org/)

and Our Trade Tunnel is nearly ready for the Depot.

Entry XWHEr

One of Our Dwarfs has turned violent.  We shall deal with this.

Said Dwarf appears to have been considerate enough to not kill Anything, and We have sent him to go stand behind a suitable pair of Doors - they seem to be from a aborted Pump Stack - a Door We will install on a Passage as soon as he leaves the Hospital.

Also, the Missing Reports have come in.

Entry lahIs

We have transferred the Depot well within Time!

(https://i.postimg.cc/90N2hcDP/Screenshot-2021-11-24-190223.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Also, We found a Lever which should have been taken down, so We had it removed, and Our new Training Room is seeing use.

(https://i.postimg.cc/nVdp7G3s/Screenshot-2021-11-24-191444.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Entry bvttih

Autumn has come.  We have perhaps not done so well in Summer as in Spring, what with escaped Prisoners and the Siege, but We do still have more Dwarfs then We started with at Seventy - well, actually Seventy-One for now.

There is little for Us to do, seeing as We are only here for a Year half-over.  Is it worth attempting to improve the Farms and start effective Livestock keeping?

We don't know.

Entry 01NiN

We have ordered the Construction of a Bridge to block off the Ramp used in the Siege, and We have also ordered the Deconstruction of every non-producing Farm Plot.

Which was most of them.

Entry CZdO8

This doesn't seem to do Anything.

(https://i.postimg.cc/jdLKhn1M/Screenshot-2021-11-24-210029.png) (https://postimages.org/)

One does wonder if it used to have a Purpose, a long Time ago.

Entry BeGV9

This is a ridiculous State of Affairs.

(https://i.postimg.cc/pX4vcXbR/Screenshot-2021-11-24-210903.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We have commissioned an equally ridiculous Number of green glass Cabinets in order to fix this.

Oh, and We told the Dwarfs to store empty Cages with the full ones.

Entry mWoxw

Traders have arrived, and We discovered We lacked a Broker.  We are planning on mostly trading Clothes, excess Plants, and perhaps Toys.

What Below...

(https://i.postimg.cc/htmBkWcx/Screenshot-2021-11-24-213331.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Good Dwarf, how is that a good Idea?

Entry 9mkEl

We ended up mostly trading old Clothes, particularly since the Traders did not bring a large Caravan.

For that Matter, given what they had it was just as well.  Gives them Something useful to do.

Entry elDN9

We decided deconstructing the Fields was taking too long - namely, none of them had been deconstructed - so We instead ordered them to be left fallow.

We also discovered two properly dead Animals in Our Cages, and that while expensive dumping Sacred Apexes still in their Cages does safely get rid of them.

Entry Pr1h8

We have Migrants!

Oh, and the Mayor woke up and is now talking with the Liaison.

There is no News.

We instructed the Mayor to request Seeds of every Kind available.

Our Parent Civilization will pay over double Value for unworked Cloth, Windows, and Blocks.  Green Glass is cheap, Windows it is.

Entry 52VGJ

Found and properly named two Levers, and ensured that one Dwarf got buried.

Oh, and a Dwarf went fey.  We're a little lower on yarn Cloth then We'd like, but otherwise good.

Entry 8fw7S

We swapped the Depot Access so the Traders can leave, and one of Our Dwarfs got locked on the wrong Side.  She has Drink but no Food, so We dearly hope the Traders leave soon.

The fey Dwarf is doing rather well.

And We arranged for the first Wave of Cabinets!

(https://i.postimg.cc/5tMV172r/Screenshot-2021-11-24-233303.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Entry k23ua

The fey Dwarf has begun Work, and the Traders have left so We can let that Dwarf out.

Entry utDn9

The Artifact is complete, and well...

(https://i.postimg.cc/PqzkqWL5/Screenshot-2021-11-25-113440.png) (https://postimg.cc/LqXWCZBc)

...We can't tell if it is Awe-inspiringly ridiculous, or ridiculously Awe-inspiring.

We decided to look over the Health of Our Dwarfs and noticed four Infections.  Knowing Dwarfs, they will either die within the Season or keep going for Years while still infected.

Our current Population stands at Eighty-One Dwarfs, so this not too much of a Problem.

Oh, and We have just spotted some Water seeping out of the Aquifer.  It is not very much Water - Aquifers just aren't what they used to be - but it is untidy so We sent a Dwarf to build a Wall.

Entry aXly4

Heavens Above and Below, how are We supposed to handle Stupid?

(https://i.postimg.cc/qRJH6NnX/Screenshot-2021-11-25-120653.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Right.  First, We swap the Depot Access.

Second, we wait for the Dwarf to clear the Outer Gate.

(https://i.postimg.cc/SsgF6mf0/Screenshot-2021-11-25-121049.png) (https://postimages.org/)

And now We have the Lever pulled as quickly as possible!

...and the Dwarf walked off before the Lever got pulled.  We're going to be at this for a while.

(https://i.postimg.cc/vTDRXC04/Screenshot-2021-11-25-121619.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Or, maybe not.  There are Rocks in the Trade Tunnel...

(https://i.postimg.cc/Fz6M6G6D/Screenshot-2021-11-25-122104.png) (https://postimages.org/)

And she's picking up a rock...

(https://i.postimg.cc/kMhPDX5K/Screenshot-2021-11-25-122425.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We have ordered the Lever pulled already and -

(https://i.postimg.cc/J4DVXVyg/Screenshot-2021-11-25-122621.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Well.  That was fast.

Now We just need to cancel and deconstruct.

Entry kBhYA

Due to the Presence of mistakenly dumped Magma-safe Items in the Cistern, We have decided to install a Drain in case some later Ruler wants to fish them out without damaging the Scenery.

(https://i.postimg.cc/kX0rF1K5/Screenshot-2021-11-25-130555.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We figure a Pair of green glass Doors, a glass Grate, and some Fortifications ought to suffice, so long as said future Ruler remembers to turn off the Magma Pump Stack.

Entry qLo0F

Winter is upon Us.

It seems strange to work throughout the Winter, as We prefer using Winter as a Time off for Our Dwarfs.  However, as Needs must.

We shall be focusing Our efforts at identifying both short-term and long-term Problems.

Entry yfYPU

A dwarfen Child has reached Adulthood.  We have assigned her to her Squad, and told her to go Farm as Our Fields are in dire Need of Farmers.

We have completed Stages One through Three of installing the Drain.

(https://i.postimg.cc/dVrbW2jj/Screenshot-2021-11-25-143856.png) (https://postimages.org/)

The Grate is covering the Drop to where the Magma can drain off the Map, and for Safety We will be removing the outer Door and replacing it with a Wall after We have linked the inner Door up to a Lever.

We have also begun farming either Peafowl, or peafowl Eggs depending on whether the Peahens will lay fertile Eggs.

(https://i.postimg.cc/KYbdC19S/Screenshot-2021-11-25-144544.png) (https://postimages.org/)

Entry q8T7f

We noticed We didn't have a Fishery, which is an easy Mistake to make, so We ordered one built.

Also, We have completed installing the Drain without incident.

Entry Lb4vA

As it turns out, We forgot to build one of the Memorials.

(https://i.postimg.cc/ZRKXK1tw/Screenshot-2021-11-25-153113.png) (https://postimages.org/)

We have ordered it built, and hopefully the ghostly Dwarf will refrain from causing too much Trouble.

Entry MMZuj

We had a minor Incident while disposing of the last Prisoner.

(https://i.postimg.cc/cH92KXd0/Screenshot-2021-11-25-155036.png) (https://postimages.org/)

None of Our Dwarfs were harmed. We later received word that one of Our Dwarfs went missing during this Incident.

Entry Wovwf

Had a Run-In with a Giant Olm.

We sent the three nearest Squads - or rather, the Squads containing the three nearest Dwarfs - and killed it without Injury.

(https://i.postimg.cc/ZnXQHn9Q/Screenshot-2021-11-25-161407.png) (https://postimages.org/)

...And We just received word Someone went missing.  How?  We'll check the Combat Reports for any Clues...

Oh.  That's how.

Entry o8TKJ

We decided to have a Floor constructed over the Gate, outdoor Butchershop, and Fishery -

A Dwarf has withdrawn from Sociaty.

We're a little worried as the Dwarf might want more Bone then We have, but ah well.  We'll see.

Entry 6lC20

We discovered that Access to the third Cavern was not controlled, so We are sealing it off.

Why does that Staircase open directly into the third Cavern?  Very well, We are raising the Checkpoint Bridges.

If We lose Dwarfs because of Staircase Design...

Entry K5oeA

The moody Dwarf has created a very nice Sarcophagus.

It's not the most interesting Artifact, but it could be useful later down the Line.

Entry 5C5J0

Spring has arrived.

We are leaving a Copy of this Log for the next Ruler of Runlance, in the Hopes that it may be of Use.

Current Population: Eighty Dwarfs.

Notable Problems:

- Farmer Shortage.  It seems that there are not enough Dwarfs farming to plant all Fields.

- Equipment Mismatch.  We have been seeing this pop up in the Announcements

- Stockpile Mismanagement.  Our Food Stockpiles seem to function very poorly.

- The Blind Cave Ogre in the second Cavern.

- The Forgotten Beast in the first Cavern.

- The Lack of a properly controlled Entrance to the third Cavern.

Useful Notes:

- The Inner and Outer Trade Gates are linked to the same Lever, which is in the Lever Control Room and named 'Trade Access'.

- The two hundred Windows are for next Autumn's Caravan, assuming it makes it.

- The Lever for the Magma Cistern Drain is in the same Room as the other Magma Control Levers, and is named 'Magma Cistern Drain'.

- We have true Pairs of Sheep, Blue Peafowl, and Yaks.  With any luck, they are also breeding Pairs.

- The Squad Death Row is currently set so that any Dwarf assigned to it will strip down and station behind a Door so said Dwarf can be locked up.

- Most of the Squads are set to train one Month out of the Year while inactive, with a minimum of five Dwarfs training.

By Our Hand,

Her Most Dread Majesty.

Thank you!

May We ask what it was in particular that you enjoyed?  This was Our first Time taking Part in a succession Game, and We were uncertain how well We did.

Here you go, will post about my year later. He is the TDLR for the time being. After suffering a few loses during a goblin attack, Runelance was able to build a proper library. Scrolls were made and scholars were assigned however no one has real experience writing. So the military was sent out to recover books from abandoned sites. However as winter crept up as did a undead horde. Currently underseige the dwarfs band together and look towards the next overseer for ensuring the future of the fort.

The Thin White Dukes log

Log 1 - Im disgusted at the lack of education at this site. The years have not been kind to the dwarves but our knowledge has gone backwards. Knowledge once known lost. We have no scholars. No one is recording our history. Our "Library" is pathetic. I need to work up some plans this cannot go on

Log 2 - It came to me in a dream, a long dead god. He told me what to do, i quickly sketch out the plans and get to work. Whilst we are able to. Anyone not deemed doing an important job is assigned to digging and crafting, we need to get this library done.

Log 3 - Blasted goblins, more god dwarves lost, this is why we need the library to preseve dwarven kinds knowledge. Most of the library is done. Just as planned.

Log 4 - Another dream, and endless library of endless carvings. A muse, we have an engraver, i unassign everyone he will carve the entire thing himself.

Log 5 - We have scrolls ready for the newly assigned scholars and its worse than i thought they have forgotten how. They just discuss topics with such shallow and surface level ideas. We need to solve this

Log 6 - He came to me in a dream, we need to look outside to fix within. Ofcourse the abandoned and lost sites of this world, i send out parties to explore and recover any books they can from this place and they delivered.

Log 7 - Whilst what knowledge we have recovered isn't the best its a start. My engraver works his grand labor and will been remembered for the many masterpieces he craves.

Log 8 - Well the goblins are back not good until i came across a book, according to the ancient laws of the fortress, we can only rule for one solid year at a time. Oh how perfect, I stroll out of my temporary office and head down to my library, time to become the head scholar of this place and begin writing.

Alright, its early summer now, and I still have no idea whats going on with half of this fort, lol.

The only present staff upon arrival were the mayor, who was without an office (and was very upset about several things), and a bookkeeper, who was also without an office and was being expected to maintain an 100% accurate inventory of our stockpiles.

The military was in shambles, half of the units were without a commander. And our fortress lacked a captain of the guard.
The training schedules between units was incomprehensible. Some units trained only once a year, while others trained constantly or had seemingly random schedules. The custom uniforms that were assigned to some units were all without shield, so most of our dwarves are either very rusty with them, or are totally unfamiliar with them. I have been consequently left the arduous and unfortunate task of restructuring our entire military; during what appears to be an omnipresent siege by an undead horde commanded by flying necromancer experiments.

I also assigned an innkeeper, and have begun construction on several dedicated shrines to the gods of our pantheon.

I also just barely saved a dwarf who was almost insane from his demand for bones to satiate his fey mood. Many peafowls were harmed in the process of this satiation.

Yeah, the military was a mess. Lost a lot clearing out the waves I had to deal with and by the end of the year they brought a new wave. Well hope you can improve the military. Best of luck

Dikbut's Log:
1st of Granite, 1509

My arrival at Rurkûbuk, "Runlance" was ill-timed.
What was supposed to be an easy con-job assignment, has since become a matter of the most dire of circumstances.
The fortress, upon my arrival, was in the midst of being besieged by a force of the Nako Musor at 194 undead strong. Most of invaders are intelligent, and wearing full armor. Several failed experiments fight alongside them. The entire fort was and continues to be under total lockdown.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at3.12.49am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at3.12.49am.png)

The fort itself, with its complex passages and automated defenses, had thus far prevailed at keeping the invaders outside the fortress walls. However, the intricate labyrinth of machinery, its arcane stone mechanisms, and indefatigable twisting rods and large rotating gears, which worked night and day, all intertwined and connected to a multitude of various levers, which were concentrated in either hub rooms, or placed seemingly at random in various corridors and hallways. Upon my initial survey of the first fortress, I inquired with the local citizenry as to how the complex system operates, and what each of the levers do. To my surprise, none of the dwarves could say. I asked these dwarves who had been running this fort, and most of them immediately shrugged and walked off. Fortunately, one dwarf was able to direct to me to an updated list of the fort's key persons that was maintained by the scholars of the library.

On the way to the library I discovered that a particular hallway intersecting with a main bus of the fortress, was awash with crundle blood, as well as live wild crundels. Surprisingly, none of the dwarves were concerned about the crundles, or knew how they had even entered the fortress. The crundels evidently kept to themselves at the end of the hallway, which didn't connect to anything important. And so the crundels were allowed to remain.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at1.53.47am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at1.53.47am.png)

We arrived at the library, the last bastion of any competence in this fort. As my eyes fell upon the list, and I became ever more elucidated to the grizzly & daunting task that lay before me. My plans for ransacking the fortress of its gold a mundane temporary assignment of strategic military oversight would have to be put on hold, for there was much work to be done, and to do this work, I would need men, dwarf-men, people in general really, even crundels honestly! We are quite desperate in our situation, and these desperate times call for, well... anyone that is going to bother showing up, honestly. The first of the two names on the list was the mayor, and that was next person I intended to speak with.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.42.09am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.42.09am.png)

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_15091.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_15091.png)

I found the "mayor" of the fortress at the bar/inn. Unsurprisingly, I found there to be no bartender, no inn keeper, that resided there. Instead, "patrons" simply hopped over the counter, got what they needed, and vaulted back over, and complained to a wooden barrel with a smiley face drawn on it. But it was here, in this lonely cesspit, that I found the fort's mayor. And the mayor was very drunk, and alone. Crying in frustration and anger over a great many of seemingly reasonable complaints, such as having to witness the body of his friend decompose in real time. And that his only companion and piece of owned furniture was a glass cabinet.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at1.45.40am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at1.45.40am.png)

Emergency enlistment for main offices took only a fortnight. Tossing whoever was even remotely competent at their designated assignment.

The military was also in shambles. Most units were without commanders, and the units themselves were a bizarre mishmash of different training schedules, and uncoordinated uniforms (if you could call them such.) This gross military incompetence was immediately corrected... mostly... I mean, we made due with what we have. (What very little we have) Training is now nine months a year for all units. Each major training session will last 3 months, followed by one month for R&R before soldiers return for further training. This ensures that our dwarves develop their military prowess competently, without over-burdening them with the stresses of a brutal never-ending training regimen, the stress from which would otherwise cripple our dwarves in terms of their combat effectiveness, which is the only reason were not doing that.

Our military units are now thus:

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at5.33.40pm.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at5.33.40pm.png)

One dwarf evidently had nearly gone insane by the time of my arrival, and kept screaming about needing bones. So bones were acquired, and the growing peacock problem in the fort were simultaneously taken care of.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.27.50am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.27.50am.png)

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.28.37am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.28.37am.png)

The end result of the mood was thus, and I have absolutely no idea how you play it:

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.35.27am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.35.27am.png)

I still can't make any damn sense of this fort's infernal layout and design. There are a million gold statues laying around, but other than normal bedrooms, I can't find any furnished offices for any of the former officials, or metalsmithers.

I do not have time for this. I have decided upon an emergency reallocation of two unoccupied rooms to serve until they are no longer required, as they have been seemingly abandoned after being covered in strange random engravings, these will do well to satiate the demands of the mayor and the newly appointed captain of the guard. Unfortunately, we're in a bit of a hurry, so the two of them are going to have to share.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at3.14.50am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at3.14.50am.png)

I have also upgraded the office of the bookkeeper from the janitor's closet they had been using to a small cubby I had carved out next to the new manager's office. Their response can be described nothing short of pure jubilation.

Dikbut's journal
Summer of 1509

Finally, work has begun on my modest temporary ramshackle living quarters from which I shall stoically endure alongside the good dwarven citizens of our fort.

I have commissioned the forbidden copper armor to be melted down to produce copper bars, and to have vast quantities of rose gold produced for the small quantity of limited furnishings for my humble barren abode.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at3.31.24am.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at3.31.24am.png)

Work continues slowly, as our new metalsmithing dwarves train their skill in producing the new rose gold statues I have commissioned.

The invaders still seem intent on continuing their siege. Out of boredom, I decided to engrave humorous etchings taunting the invaders.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at12.17.46pm.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at12.17.46pm.png)

The living area of the dwarves has been expanded.
The endless supply of glass cups that was being produced has been halted.

Fall of 1509

Summer turns to fall, and still the siege will not let up.
Several artifacts are produced, and the work on my lodgings continues.

Overall nothing of importance happens during this season, except that one of the dwarves made a piss colored mug.

Dikbut's journal
Winter of 1509

Everything happens.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at12.38.14pm.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at12.38.14pm.png)

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_etog.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_etog.png)

*cough ahem* my plan works perfectly, and the Etin attacks does battle with the invaders on our behalf.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at12.42.26pm.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at12.42.26pm.png)

Upon closer inspection the composition of the enemy forces is quite strange. Intelligent undead frost wizard gorlacks doing work, apparently.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at12.41.25pm.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at12.41.25pm.png)

Our Etin friend, Etog Gusnongore Ostranusgoz, whose name shall never be forgotten, and is now memorialized just outside our fortress, who fought most valiantly, on our behalf, is slain in battle.

5th of Moonstone.
The last of the invaders have retreated, having been bested by the great strategic military mind of yours truly.
No, no thank you's are required, all in a year's work for this humble servant. All I require is the tiny pittance sum I am owed for my all my humble service to the fort over this long year. (A sum whose total amount has never been formally specified.. hehe)

Now that the siege is over, I would like to open the front gate, especially seeing as how we've gotten our first migrant wave in what very well could be years. Also, we have run out of wood, and one of the leather workers is on the verge of going insane with log lust, due to the fey mood they were struck with during the siege. For now, the migrants will have to wait outside while I figure out which lever opens the front gate (and verify which ones don't flood the entire fortress in the lava that can be seen being pumped throughout the fortress.) This state of affairs works just fine however, because not long after the migrants arrived, this happened:

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.02.06pm.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.02.06pm.png)

The giant, Slong.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_slong.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_slong.png)

Fortunately an elf cold one visitor, who very obviously wasn't a spy, happened to be waiting outside out gates of our fortress and vanquished the fell giant handily.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.08.53pm.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.08.53pm.png)

Somehow, after enough tinkering with adding mechanisms to things, pulling the same levers multiple times, the front door opened. We modified the default burrow to allow the dwarves to leave the fortress.

Both the Etin and the Giant left our fort various artifacts. Most are worthless legendary jute hats, worth anywhere up to a whopping 250 in currency. However there are a few good artifacts theres a steel axe and an iron hammer.

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.09.48pm.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_screenshot2022-01-05at2.09.48pm.png)

(http://img4.imagetitan.com/img4/small/24/24_sealknife.png) (http://img4.imagetitan.com/img.php?image=24_sealknife.png)

Oh. And one very interesting new addition for the library...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

------------

End:
And now, I retreat to my humble modest lodgings, for some much needed R&R in the humble lodgings, and personal vault treasury, that I have filled with the tiny sum of gold collected from the fortress for my invaluable service to the fort over the past year.

Your most loyal and faithful servant,
General Dikbut

For reference these are my personal lodgings, whose lobby now serves as a monument for our forts dead, and is consequently a taboo for others to disturb or rob from, is now this:
And a message to my would be successors: Keep out.

Great new update dikbut!
Request to be dorfed by the next overseer.

The OP appears to be absent. But as former commander of the fort, I, General Dikbut, do hereby assume authority over the matter.

And by the defacto power invested in me, I say go for it. You got like a week or something.

You are now to take charge of Runlance for a duration of one year.
1st of Granite 1510 to 1st of Granite 1511.

Be sure to include a link to your hosted save file after the turns over.

o7 GL HF, and don't f*uck'n get everyone killed. But if you do, please consult with the Library of Evil on how best to remedy the situation.

... but you know what, I got some time this weekend, I'll give this overseer-thing a shot.  :D

Not that I don't trust you guys... but I will avoid touching the levers at (almost) all cost. :o Our smallest lever rooms are about as big as our tavern I reckon. In fact, I'd bet the square-tileage of our lever-rooms surpasses that of our tavern by several orders of magnitude. Every time I open the game I find a new lever room. Its quite insane, really.  xD

Other than that, things are going gloriously. Almost nobody died yet. Just as a quick info: I'll most likely need till sunday though to finish everything up, which is technically day 8. Sorry!

Published from the Journals of Merrygin Anvilwalk

12th of Obsidian, 1509
Finally, I will be witnessing the glory of revolutionary Runlance myself! And finally, I got rid of the yoke of aristocracy! What a day for a poor gelder-boy from the hillocks like me!

20th of Obsidian, 1509
I am confused. Runlance is nothing like I imagined. This is supposed to be the result of the glorious Revolution? The people are running around in tattered clothes, nobody has access to the simplest amenities. Worst of all, this place is run by a self-appointed generalissimo named DikbutDaGrate who is milling about in his perversely luxurious palace all day with his two “personal assistants”.

28th of Obsidian, 1509
Something confusing happened today. I was scrubbing crundle intestines off the floors of the library when General Dikbut came in, followed by a drove of petitioners. He suddenly pointed at me and yelled: “There. From now on bother that guy, he is hereby declared overseer… And now leave me and my personal assistants to our important General’s business.” Apparently, I am overseer now… I only ever wanted to geld stuff for the good of the revolution!

1st of Granite, 1510
If the general thinks I will just be his useful idiot, he will be bitterly disappointed. Its time to bring back the glory days of the revolution…
In fact, I just discussed our new 1-year-plan to some of my comrades in the tavern. This will surely reignite their revolutionary fervour!

OFFICIAL ILLUSTRATED SECTION TO BE PUBLISHED AS MONOGRAPH IN THE SKULL LIBRARY:

2nd of Granite, 1510
Phase one and two of the 1-year-plan have already begun:
First “The Great Rearmament and Reorganisation”. Some bourgeois elements say this is some kind of purge – and in fact, they are right. The military is in tatters. A new Revolutionary Guard of trustworthy comrades will be established as well as newly appointed regiments, each equipped and trained by the highest standards. All suspicious and counter-revolutionary elements, like these magma-cult lunatics, will be removed from positions of military or political power by immediate effect.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Tomorrow, I will officially proclaim our “Great Re-Evalution and Labor-Restructuring” Programme, which reads as follows:
o   Each able Comrade-Dwarf is to be enlisted in communal labor; everyone needs to contribute community service.
o   Each able Comrade-Dwarf is assigned a new job according to their skills, or is provided the opportunity to develop an economic or martial skill if they are unskilled.
o   Each Comrade-Dwarf shall be given the opportunity to attain all goods and services of their everyday needs, be it proper clothing, booze, food, education or uplifting entertainment of revolutionary spirit (which is impossible in the pitiful tavern we have right now! Depicted below)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

6th of Granite, 1510
I already feel we have achieved more for the revolution than ever before. The newly expanded clothing industry is hard at work to provide our comrades with modern and practical clothing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

New and modern infrastructure is dug to save the comrades time in their working day.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Comrades are also preparing the mass smelting of bolts that scatter the entire valley. What an inspiring display of resourcefulness!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our efforts are so inspiring, in fact, that we already can see the first dwarf rushing to a mason’s workshop to work on an exceptional and modern craft.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well done Domas! A true workers tool, graphically violent as well. Although the imagery does reek of imperialist sympathies, hmm….

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

26th of Slate, 1510
In a hopefully crushing blow to aristocratic tendencies in a minority of our dwarves, I just banned scepters from being exported. Also, the first training sessions of the newly formed brigades in a vacant barracks started!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The great melting continues, meanwhile. Soon enough our Brigades will be equipped with first-grade armor and weapons.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

14th of Felsite, 1510
A fruitful spring comes to a close and with that, some new migrants arrive!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The new arrivals are greeted with joy and are immediately assigned to their quarters and jobs. The continued migration is a welcome sign and invigorates the comrades, who once again the comrades are confirmed in their continued struggle for the revolution.
The newly dug communal canteen of Runlance is made available for the workers to enjoy their leisure time in a spacious and modern environment once again. What a sight for the sore eyes (and throats) that are only used to the pitiful space of the old tavern. Finally, our lever-rooms are no longer bigger than our meeting halls.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15th of Malachite, 1510
Praise the workers! We have finally made available the most modern materials a worker can wish for – Adamantine! This will bring our efforts of military modernization to new heights.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

3rd of Limestone, 1510
What is worse than the imperialist? Right, the anarchist. And once again, they are at our gates in full force to test our strength.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But we stand ready to defend the achievements of the revolution.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Many goblins fell, most where imprisoned in our cage traps, however. What a testament to our engineering capabilities!

2nd of Limestone, 1510
If they can’t steal from us with force, they will use even lower methods. With great sadness I have to report that the class enemy stole some of the fruits of our honest labor.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But we this only means we can never let our guard down before the revolution is completed.
To advance our technological abilities and provide the working classes with better education, a new paper industry is set up near the library.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

5th of limestone
Ah, finally, the caravans are here! But… they are packed with parchment to the brim. What is this? No seeds, no military equipment, no resources? This must be ploy by the monarchists from the mountainhome! Let’s hope for better commerce next year…

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1st of Sandstone, 1510
A day of celebration as the 2nd People’s Army is officially sworn in and new arrival Udib Hallechoes is appointed commander.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, the second artifact of our 1-year-plan is constructed. A handy wool toga. Well done comrade Stakud.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally, it’s also time to announce the last phase of our 1-year-plan!

“The Great Leap Underground”
The caverns are our native homeland. It is a great shame that the corrupt bourgeois leadership of the past has let the caverns be overtaken by beasts, filthy troglodytes and crundles. The caverns are to be cleared once the military is fully brought into order. Once the caverns are cleared the groundwork for a glorious new capital of our civilization are to be laid, beginning with a paved marching plaza.

The realization of this phase begins next week.

8th of Sandstone 1510
A new connection to a suitable cavern layer begins

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15th of Sandstone 1510
The cleaning of the caverns begins with the defeat of the cave ogres, who continuously tried to sabotage our efforts and are a danger to the health of our workers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

11th of Timber, 1510
Private Note [DO NOT PUBLISH!]
I am beginning to loose my temper. The construction of the cavern marching plaza goes much slower than anticipated and I might need to size down the effort. I can’t allow the 1-year-plan to look like a failure, just because my comrades are getting lazier each day…

15th of Timber, 1510,
Rumors that I, the overseer, have attacked a comrade yesterday are propaganda by the class enemies in our midst. I merely oversaw the lawful punishment of a Jeweler (a rather bourgeois profession in the first place!) who did not fulfil is working quotas. At least I still take matters into my own hands for the revolution!!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

26th of Moonstone, 1510
With winter comes another foe trying to overcome our ingenious fortress defences – an Ettin!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the first line of defence, our brave comrade-kitten Doren.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They can slay our pets, but they can’t escape our traps! The Ettin’s cage is transported away already. This needs a worthy place in the fortress…

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1st of Opal, 1510
The construction of our marching plaza, the new center of the revolutionary capital, has begun! I know some of you might have wanted this to have happened sooner, but I can only say this: it might just well be finished already if you kept working instead of complaining to me about it!!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, modern apparments for foreign visitors are completed in the Whip of Living.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

19th of Opal, 1510
Comrades, once again our struggle is rewarded with an artifact – and what an artifact! “Mergedusks, known as the Blowing Nuts”!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I will personally be appointed to take care of the "Blowing Nuts" myself… I’ll just quickly go and try them on in my quarters…

13th of Obsidian, 1510
What a glorious display of the might of the revolution. This is the new plaza of the cavernous capital, ready for military displays and live training.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

27th of Obsidian, 1510
Private Note [DO NOT PUBLISH]
The general was here yesterday (fatter than ever). He said he met with the other captains of the military and that they are not content with the state of the new military plaza. Apparently, its too small, too remote and too dangerous for them, and a “danger to public health” just because of some rotting ogre carcasses here and there… Pah, I say! Defeatists! I will go to them tomorrow and tell them to shove their complaints into a trolls arse! After all, I have the full force of the working classes behind me!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
*This depicts the last official meeting of Overseer Merrygin with the revolutionary guard, before his unanimous reappointment as Head-Geldsdwarf*

---------------------------

Our population now counts 137 dwarfs, including 16 children! Man, seeing through this maze of a fortress was not easy, haha. But it worked out. We only lost Olon in the beginning, who was insane, and two militia dwarves, one in the fight against the goblins and one against the ogres. Nobody special though, as far as I can see. This was fun! My first community fort entry, btw.  :D Good luck to the next overseer!

[I am still waiting for the confirmation email for a dffd account, haven't had one yet. I'll post the save file asap]

Also Merry just an fyi some emails address types won't get confirmation emails for file depot. Hotmail doesn't work i had to use a gmail one.

That was an excellent! Thank you for the writeup. You don't have to DFFD, you can upload a rar to mediafire or rapidshare, or any other freemium file hosting service you want. Just post a link once you've got it uploaded.

Man, so now theres a caged Ettin, and a necromancer's slab?! This fort has the potential to get so freaking good. Whoever takes the next turn, should probably figure out what to do with the Ettin, although they could also leave it to the next person.

Option A: Assign the Ettin to the chain located in the mini-dungeon, which is located beneath the retractable bridge/trap-door thats installed in the middle of my office. I don't have a button that I can press, that saids "Hounds", but it's legit. Right now, the mini-dungeon only houses a single chained up crundel, which isn't very menacing. But the Ettin will make for a more interesting playmate for the next dwarf that steps into my office with a complaint.

Option B: Preferable: Building a large WWF-styled fight arena, maybe with windows installed around it, and a tavern, so the dwarves can safely spectate and socialize. In the event that a prisoner does defeat the Ettin, somehow getting one of the dwarves to resurrect it as an undead Ettin would be rad. We have a necro slab! Undead Macho Men Randy Savages; we'll certainly have to carve out some custom statues for the fort's new celebrity.

Edit:
May I apply as overseer?

Once Merrygin has uploaded the file you'll be up next.

I propose a prisoner fight pit. The Ettin is the champion, anyone captured must defeat the Ettin for freedom. Make it an event that the dwarves watch for entertainment. Plus keeping the ettin around and making him stronger on weak goblins also makes for good defense system and perhaps the Ettin could be the forts champion for defeating forgotten beasts, rocs and the like.

Fighting pits sounds great, it surely won't be the last critters that stumble into the cages at the entrance.  :D For now the Ettin is caged in the center of my pitiful plaza, fyi.

Alright, xkcd1963 it is now your turn, you have one week. Please get us through 1511 without getting everyone killed, etc.

If you're up for it, build us a fight pit, and put the Ettin in it. If you can, post some savage combat logs of the goblin prisoners having to fight it. And possibly assign said fight pit to a temple dedicated to our dwarf's god of bonking people to death.

Good that you are back Ryukan!  :)

Yeah I was only dubiously certain about the correct location of the magma gate levers, so that was one of those instances where I only wanted to pull it in the worst case scenario. xD Also the only siege that came was a bunch of gobbo recruits, mostly, so it didn't feel necessary.

1st Granite 1511, Sigunerar 'xkcd1963'
After last nights brawl in The Whip of Living I got to talk with Supremecommander. I mentioned I had organised dogpit fights some years ago and Supremecommander got excited and ordered me to devise a plan for the same stuff, but much larger scale. I don't remember well the details, but apparently we need visitors to spread our culture. This is a true given opportunity and might grant me rank in society.

3rd Granite 1511 "conversation between Sigunerar and Supreme Commander"
Supreme Commander: "So you want to create an above ground structure, dam the brook, move our cemetery, deconstruct our farming area there.. Sounds odd, creating structures above ground isn't dwarven my son"
Sigunerar: "I know my liege, but it will be more familiar for visitors"
Supreme Commander: "Hmm, I shall think about it, keep planning for now"
Sigunerar: "Yes my commander"

5th Granite 1511 "conversation between Sigunerar and Supreme Commander"
Supreme Commander: "You, come here. I notified the fortress, you are responsible now for creating the big and awesome pit you talked about. The manager will help you organise the workforce. To give you a little spur, you've one year to finish the construction, if you succeed you shall receive a position as my new major, if you fail you'll be the first to fight the Ettin in the new pit. Don't try to flee as I assigned guards to watch you. Good luck."

8th Granite 1511, Sigunerar
I couldn't sleep the last three days. At least I got a hang on the workforce and ordered the clearing of the construction site. I need to find a way to drain this brook.

13th Granite 1511, Sigunerar
We'll use the secret Losemortar to stop the flow of the brook. I've instructed the workforce to create a palisade around the brook's flow, so nothing may spill and put us in danger.

24th Slate 1511, Sigunerar

6th Hematite 1511, Sigunerar
Work had to be postponed due to invading goblin forces, but not for long.

14th Hematite 1511, Sigunerar
Losemortar hath been unleashed!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

14th Limestone 1511, Sigunerar
Traders have arrived. Works on the pit have again been delayed.

10th Obsidian 1511, Sigunerar
I've been send to the Gulag. I did not finish the pit on time, not even close. I fear for my life and I wish I never came to this fortress. This place is horrific, it smells of thousand cadavers, there is nothing nice to enjoy here and I'm thirsty. How am I now ever achieve rank in society? I should probably focus on how to get out here...

19th Obsidian 1511, "conversation between Sigunerar and Supreme Commander"
The Supreme Commander is visiting Sigunerar who is located at the Gulag. He carries with him a bucket of water. Sigunerar is sitting on the floor staring at the sky.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Supreme Commander: "You look like a wet elf, I brought something to clean yourself"
Sigunerar: "Commander! I .. I'm sorry I failed you"
Supreme Commander: "You sure do. But since there is no pit I also can't have anyone fight that Ettin ... yet. Look, to be honest with you, I lost a bet with the others. They thought the pit would take a long time to finish and I was certain you could do it in a year. I can't lose my face, this is how dwarven society works, how else do you think am I Supreme Commander? Thats why I had to send you here. It shouldn't take much longer, a month is enough and I would release you immediately if it was entirely in my hands. The others have still a say into it.
Sigunerar: "I .. I think understand? My Commander"
Supreme Commander: "You do? Good. Maybe one day you and I can work more closely together"
The Supreme Commander silences his voice and shortens the distance to Sigunerar's ear uncomfortably close.
Supreme Commander: "There are forces in this world that pay good sums to whoever can provide them with special relics and artifacts"
The Supreme Commander stands up and smirks.
Supreme Commander: "I wish you farewell then, Sigunerar, may the gods be gentle with you."

Excellent write up.

That magma cannon in action is just art.

Its a shame the fight pit still isn't online yet, but I guess we can call it a work in progress, and leave it up to the next guy.

Merge Dusks the Blowing Nuts is the weirdest pair of pants. I'm trying to envision what actually wearing those would look like.
