Introduction
One player is the gladiator manager, the rest are the gladiators. HUGE DISCLAIMER: I really have no belly for describing gore, so expect most of the bloody details to be glossed over. That being said, injuries will be tracked in a more specific manner than a health bar. Minor injuries cause pain, major injuries take multiple matches to heal, and some wounds can't heal or are fatal. That is why this is a team game. This is PVE, at least for now with some light story elements.

I plan to use two d6 dice for a bell curve. Weapons and equipment your manager lends to you will modify these outcomes in certain situations. A fair bit of this game will be improvised, but the main gameplay loop is simply to schedule fights, fight, and buy upgrades to take on bigger fights.

Alrighty, time to throw a few tutorial/prologue punches at you. hops and Horizon may choose the gender and appearance of their gladiator slave. You have no possessions and are garbed in tattered rags. You haven't eaten anything resembling food in as long as you can remember, which admittedly is quite blurry. A piece of bread drops down from the bright grate in the ceiling. You share a portion with each other, and extend some for the other two. They are the new arrivals, they haven't starved as long as you two. The nearest one sees the frail outstretched limb and scoffs. They mutter to each other and turn with gleaming grins. After cracking knuckles and spitting at the floor, they close in to take the food. You each swallow it before they can take it from you, and they are furious. Defend yourself!

Formation
Both sides will take a formation, the standard one is to each be in a line. You can also have one person move infront of another during the enemy's attack. Changing formation does not use an action.

Action
Try to attack or defend, you can use punches, kicks, or anything you could reasonably do. This is the fight of your life!

Aside: Man of Paper actually made some really cool meta level stuff I want to borrow from Blood and Sand/Blood of Champions. I asked, we'll see. Either way, this is an improvised game, so let's get started. We'll focus on the combat right now.

Prologue <BATTLE}---
(Kindof a hobo fight sim rn...)

A noble is out on a walk, adorned with the lavish yellow attire of House Constantine. It's a sunny day, the hustle and bustle of the city quickly dies off to the surrounding towns, like this small crossroads. The noble passes a gathering of peasant children and the bold teal banners of the auction house, the only landmark. There is business to be done. The well-to-do tourist turns back when a ruckus is heard from a grate in the ground. The aristocrat brushes the excitable children aside to see what is happening...

Stepping under the light, the closest thug has dirty bronze skin, messy grey hair just past their ears, and ghostly blue eyes. He lunges at the nearest victim, but they step out of the way and he slips on some rat shit, tumbling face first into the poo bucket. Looking down at the newcomer thrash about, the longtime slave chooses to simply slowly back away. Enraged, the second thug steps close. A black man with a narrow nose and blond short curls. He sizes up the next one, a bald man with a vacant expression on his drooling face, who abruptly shouts "HURGURGLURGUR!" before the second thug lunges at him, pulling him into a headlock and causing the dolt to start to pass out. "Bulk sleepy..."

A guard opens the door and glances inside under the shadow of their pointy brown helmet. They withdraw from the opening, and three more slaves are pushed inside. Seeing the struggle, they all run over to help. An old man with a mustache gets in close. The second thug looks on, keeping the headlock as the first thug raises their head up, fleeces dropping from the tangles of their moppy hair. The blond haired slave ducks as the other is clocked by the old man. The wide blow doesn't do much more than cause them to hold their face in momentary discomfort, while the mustached fighter teeters forward.A teenage boy dodges and weaves through the sweaty bodies and jabs the second thug in the gut. He grimaces and grits his teeth. All the while the patter of feet as the third man is running around the room sporadically.

The noble sees a child dangling something, but before they can make out what it is...
Another slave is sent in. Probably not as old as she looks, she has rapid eyes and terrible teeth. She seem to recognize the smelly thug, and rushes in to defend him. There is the sounds of children cheering from the light. Something drops with a thud. A crude knife.

The third and first thug scramble for the knife. The second thug prepares to kick the wooden bucket at the slave in the back.

disadvantage

Formation Tactics
Front Row: Attack any front row target or the back row target ahead of you without penalty, all other targets are harder to attack. (-1 to rolls above 7). Attacking the front row target ahead of you is easier. (+1 to rolls below 7)
Back Row: Attack front row target ahead of you without penalty, all other targets are harder to attack. (-1 to rolls above 7) Players that are skipped or incapacitated will be sent to the back if able. If you move infront of someone they will be sent back; this will happen at the end of the turn if they don't manually move back.

Disadvantage
When you get attacked you get hurt, but when you mess up an attack you create an opening. When someone gets an attack roll of 5 or less, they are put in a disadvantageous position, making follow up attacks on them easier. (+x to rolls below 7, stops at 7); x is r5=1, r4=2, r3=3, r2=4. The worse you fail, the bigger the opening. Effect ends once they can act.

Tip: Changes to positioning resolve before actions.

The grey haired thug and the homely lady grasp for the knife, but only knock it away. The blond thug punts the wood bucket square at the gremlin of a person in the back, it takes a hit to the head. Bulk's eyes lazily crack open and he mutters, then slouches over and snores. The running slave is still running. The teenage boy is staying cautious around the two thugs near the knife. The gremlin looking fellow opens their mouth wide and hurls themself with a snarl into the general mass of the three thugs, slipping on the knife and sending it spinning across the room, before crashing to the ground. The weapon is now very much on the thugs' side. The old man barrels ahead towards the first thug's nuts. But the charge is sidestepped and the senior tumbles to the ground.

The children are chanting "Knife! Knife! Knife!" The noble among them.

Bulk comes to.

0.5 Rapid-fire Actions

Actions, with more than one distinct act involved, may be broken down into multiple rolls. An action is harder the more things you try to do.
Code: [Select]
(-x to rolls above 6, stops at 6); x = total # actions after the first.
"If/than" statements will be subactions, even if they don't activate. Some light weapons may make rapid-fire attacks easier(and the opposite when using heavy weapons and armor). A failed subaction may likely cause all further sub actions to be cancelled.

Note: For this turn a harsher formula was used that reduced subaction rolls by an additional point(x = total # of actions). Due to the sheer level of slapstick on display, I've decided to tone it down for the future.

0.6 Formation Positioning

Please make it clear you want to change position, and that your movements are not flavortext, for me to acknowledge it. Key phrases like "I move in front of player" or behind, or which enemy to get in front of. Otherwise if you are in the back, you'll retreat to that position after an attack.

Miscellaneous

Mistake: Bulk should have been sent to the back row when he passed out last turn. He is in the back now.

Aside: hops clarified to me in a PM they did not mean a literal gremlin. However I think maybe as a New Game+ after some kind of achievements have been completed, perhaps fantasy humanoid races could be permitted. I'm not really opposed to it now for things that have no natural advantages a human doesn't (horns, tusks, scales, etc.) so if you might want to clarify you are a goblin, or dwarf, or elf, something essentially like an extreme form of typical human, you could do that. Send me a PM with a picture or movie reference so I know what interpretation you are going for. But centaurs, minotaurs, and such, will have to wait.

Retcon: In this world, all humanoids have yellowgreen skin. Since the subject matter involves slavery, it is not the focus of this game to imply or explore it in connection with racism. Hair and fur color will still be individualized, but that's enough removed for me.

The battle continues!

Sure, describe your appearance. (humanoid, which can include anything similar such as elves, dwarves, hobbits, etc., but no natural weapons like tusks or scales)

Choose your starting position and first action, which can be anything you could reasonably do in this small brawl.

A curious cat brushes up against the young lanista, she puts it in her lap and starts petting, but her shouting scares it away. Standing at this point, the 11 year old noble is cheering so loud spittle is building on her lower lip. "Yeah Old Man! Kick His Nuts!!" However some of the peasant children look bored, and start to disperse. The ones still there still chant "Knife! Knife! Knife!" A guard infront of the auction house notices all the children coming from the grate and heads inside in a hurry.

"Get in there Grindak!" The magnusite door opens and slams shut, and the new occupant quickly sides with the other long-time slaves, reinforcing from the rear. Bulk's stomach growls. Turning to the audience he says simply "Hmgh, give food please!" The filthy thug with ethereal blue eyes snatches up the crude knife at last. He slashes at the old man, but only cuts air. The mustached man picks up the nearby bucket and counters by slamming it at the thug's left arm. The man in black slams the twitchy gremlin-looking slave with a fist, knocking it out, then flicks his blond curls back in self-satisfaction. While the boy is momentarily distracted by the running slave, the hag gets a light scratch on the teenager's right arm, causing him to wince. She is about the go run behind the first thug, but the young man fallows up by tripping her onto her bottom. Grimnack pounces on the downed thug and attacks her face viciously! One of the children comes back with a juicy drumstick, and tosses it---Bulk catches it and chows down on real food! All the while pitter patter of feet as the running slave still runs about. "LOOK AT ME GO!"

The first thug goes to stab the old man in the eye! The second thug throws a punch at Bulk! The third thug tries to scratch who's ever closest!

A distant door slams, the sound of metal boots assaulting stone steps grows rapidly...

The first thug adjusts the knife in his hand, and charges at the old man's face! The senior ducks! The thug is thrown off balance and trips onto the floor! The second thug lands a solid punch on Bulk's right arm, causing the nitwit to cough while swallowing the last of his meal. The third thug hisses like a cat before trying to scratch at the teenage boy, only finding air and teetering a bit.

Bulk takes his polished drumstick and shoves it into the second thug's mouth, causing him to choke! The old man tries to bash the first thug but just gets a glancing blow on his right leg. The old man follows up with a strike aimed at his face, but again only lightly nicks him. The young man turns away from the pursuing hag, and attempts to trip the thug with the crude knife, but when their legs collide he ends up doing all the tripping himself! Grindak attacks the hag's face again, she cries out in pain... Meanwhile... "EVERYONE KNOWS THAT I GOT THE LEG POWER TO RUN FOR DAYS!"

In the hallway outside the dungeon cell, the muffled shouting of a guard can be heard.
"What is going on in there? It sounds like fighting!"
(inaudible)
"Those slaves are going up for auction today you idiot! If they are all bloody and bruised..."
(inaudible)
Go get the chains, NOW!"

The heavy footfall is doubled as it recedes back into the distance.

The homely thug pushes Grindak away and gets up on shaky legs, blood dripping from her assaulted face. She runs behind the blue eyed thug and cowers in a defensive position. He seems truly shocked to see her bloody face, and with peeled back lips displaying clenched teeth he goes in for a stabbing frenzy on the mustached baldy. The blond thug is being chocked by Bulk, and struggles to escape.

Twitch---twitch---blinking, the small-toothy human wipes a nose bleed and joins formation...

Pop Quiz Answers

Quote from: MeimieFan88
1. A formation is the way each team is arranged.
2. It has two rows, front and back.
3. You can change positions for free, doing so does not count as your action.
4. If you are in the front row, your attacks get a roll bonus on the person in front of you.
5. If you are in the back row, enemies attacking you will get a roll penalty, except the one in front of you.
6. The Gladiator Manager can obtain and spend tokens to influence the story.
7. Gladiator stats form the word TRAITS with their acronym.
8. Trying to do many actions in a single turn, will result in increasingly big roll penalties.
9. The Noble belongs to House Constantine.
10. The house color is yellow.
11. The children dropped a crude knife.
12. The bucket is made of poo wood.
13. The prison door is made of magnusite.
14. Humanoids have yellow-green colored skin.
15. The slave who fell asleep in a headlock is named Bulk.

I would have also accepted simply 'Front' and 'Back' for #s 4 and 5. MF: +1 Intelligence

0.7 5 Columns, Dynamic Front, & Flanking
I'll go ahead and lock it into 5 columns (except perhaps special events). If you have no one infront of you, you will be repositioned at the front of your column. If your column has no one opposing on the enemy team, both your front and rear teammates will have all penalties related to positioning removed. These tactics apply to the enemy aswell.

0.8 Formation Tactics Revised
The current format is proving to be too cumbersome on my end, so things will be simplified a bit. Attacking back row will always be penalized(except flanking). Front attacking Front will always be rewarded(regardless of same column or not). It will now be a solid +1 or -1 modification to any roll.

0.9 Disadvantage Revised
Disadvantage will also be a solid modification (+1 to +4) to a follow-up attack, regardless of follow-up attacker's attack roll.

0.10 Criticals
2 and 12 will now ignore modifiers.

0.11 Heavy Bleeding
Aside: Recently the oldest bay 12 RTD was nominated in the hall of fame for that prestigious association. Actually, it was pretty well done on its' own merits. Immortal's bleeding mechanic in that was simple, but urgent. And I plan to use something similar.

Once you are bleeding, you roll 1d6 to pass out on a 1. On the turn you pass out, and every turn you survive, you roll 1d6 and on a 1 you die. If multiple body parts (head, arms, legs, or torso) are bleeding, there will be multiple rolls.

The battle continues!

Seems like the guards are finally gonna stop this soon. I'd rather not get stabbed before then.
Help to encircle the thugs, but try to stay away from the knife wielder. Dodge and counterpunch if an enemy comes for me.

TBH the stats are little more than a cardboard cutout at this point, I went from (wouldn't it be cool if they let me) to (Oh shi- guess that's in the game now) I'm still brainstorming how to use them, intelligence for enemy insights, agility for priority, weapon requirements, I chose them for how appropriate the categories are for my gladiator story, but the origin was an Arms Race, so going from those cardboard cutout soldiers to living breathing players well it's like taking a seed and growing a plant. It's good stalk but will need a lot of nurturing to reach it's full potential in this RTD flower pot.

Edit: I sent 'im a request to see their notes, maybe somethings could apply here.

The children hoot and holler in approval "Bulk! Bulk! Bulk!" The blond thug looks down his long nose on his propped back head at the oblivious, furious face ramming the oversized chickenbone down his mouth. Struggling to get free, he jerks a bit, but Bulk braces. He tries again, and this time pulls free to spin the attacker to the floor, then falls back half-a-step while holding his throat and coughing. The bloody hag is breathing harshly but stays on guard behind the moppy haired stinky slave, who slices quickly twice at the mustached man. When he misses both, the old man's hip bumps the knife wielder onto all fours.

"BULK CONSUME!" When Bulk comes in again the blond thug looks up to see a gaping idiot mouth close out all light. Smuthered, he hollers, "My Neck! AHH!" The runner continues to run. "I FEEL SO ALIVEEEE!" The old man picks up the poo wood bucket again and slams it down on Moppy Head. He goes face first into the messy floor. Out cold. The hag backs away slowly from the advancing teenager, and crumples to the ground. She holds up two fingers in surrender...

Shafts of light from the ceiling grate flicker with the sound of dispersing children as the crimson door creaks opened once more. YOU THERE---WAKE UP!"

Once the deep red cuffs are snapped on each pair of wrists the chains are pulled, and the slaves are taken away...

Gladiators Slaves: Choose one of your Battle Feats to increase your TRAITS by 1 point!
Quote from: Battle Feats
Technique: Successfully performed an action related to your current job. Fighter*: MF
Resilience: Hit by an enemy attack. Bulk, HP, MF
Agility: Dodged an enemy attack. (Or ran around shouting the entire match, either or) FF, HP, KZ, MF
Intelligence: Manually changed position. Grindak
Theatrics: Performed an action that got the crowd cheer. KZ, HZ
Strength: Successfully attacked an enemy. MF, KZ, Grindak, Bulk
*Fighters specialized in unarmed fighting. Punches, Kicks, and martial prowess.
(If you are still unclear on how these work specifically, that's OK as I am still feeling it out myself.)

0.12 Defense Advantage
Most defensive, silly, or passive actions will simply give you a roll advantage on the first attack on you until your turn comes around again{-1}. This bonus will not be given to people that are skipped. BTW I am happy to be accommodating if you give me reason to think waiting an extra day will give you time to get a turn in, but otherwise I want to keep the game moving along.

(Since these changes would mean FF could dodge better, and I think if I didn't there'd be a riot, FF was permitted the agility feat!)

Next Up...
We'll start the first chapter. You'll get the chance to prepare for your first official fight, which will happen over a few updates. Or you will have an opportunity to attempt to escape your Master, whom ever they may be...

I'll be speaking to you and readers as if you began reading there, so gameplay will be reviewed once the next battle starts. You have now seen the main gameplay. If you've had enough, now would be a good time to drop out. Thanks for participating in the tutorial!

Now is also a great time for interested new players to sign up.

Chapter 1 ---{PREPARE>
(We're out of the tutorial ladies and gentlemen. It's time to find religion.)

▼▼▼▼▼

Buckets of cold soapy water are splashed again and again on the faces and bodies of the slaves. A glowing orange sword is repeatedly placed flat on skin to seer any bleeding wounds shut. "SHUT UP! SHUT UP! Hurry, Hurry! Silence them, the guest are already here!"

The dungeon floor is damp. The trail of feces and bronze clay running off one of the less malnourished slaves is in stark contrast to his underlying yellowgreen skin, blending in with the rest of the lineup of frail bodies. The hostility between him and the others is palpable---some lunge against their restraints and try to bite at him. Under crude brown helmets, grimacing yellowgreen mugs flash white teeth as the guards forcefully shuffle the slaves about, separating him and a couple others from the rest. "Fight's over assholes."

Descending footsteps put the guards to attention. The teal attire distinguishes the new occupant as a representative of the auctionhouse, coming to inspect the stock. The noble steps into the space between the guards, his yellowgreen mug joining formation. "Put these ones out first, the stragglers I'm not sure we can even give away."

The selected slaves are taken away, while the rest can only wait--nude, cold, and in chains.

The representative returns, "Some girl is asking about these ones. Get them ready."

...

"Daddy, daddy, I want these ones!"
"T-these?"
"Yes! I saw them, they can fight! I promise, it won't be like last time. It won't be like, Teddy..."
"Okay...Happy Birthday darling!"

Spoiler: Roster (click to show/hide)

Gladiator Manager, Take Charge!

1.1) House Tokens
You have 1 Fortune and 1 Fate token. Choose 2 more:
Fortune: Cold--hard--cash. Represents wealth and is usually the most flexible. Bribery may offend some though.
Favor: These can be quite potent when used long before they are needed, such as to target specific NPC characters mentioned in the narrative, or seek out certain professions or positions on your own and assist them with their problems. They will remember you.
Fate: With this token luck is on your side. There is a certain karma to things though, this token can be fickle too.
Fame: The prestige of your house is a currency all its' own. Those that respect you will be eager to please---just to be associated with you.
(Both cannot be the same.)

Family Scrutiny
You've been given many servants to help you with this task. However, this "pet project" doesn't garner much confidence from the family to hold your interest for long, thus many of your servants are only on loan. In addition, choose to borrow either a chef, or a wood sculpture.

1.2) Feeding Gladiators
It is free to gather slop to feed Gladiators with, but this leaves them hungry and weak. It is a good idea to hire a professional cook dedicated just for them, or to create some kind of food trade deal, though it may be easier(though not cheaper, in the long run) to just stock up for this season. Your family has offered to lend you a chef that will prepare a regiment of specialized meals. Going to bed with full bellies on a lean fighting diet will give a significant improvement to their capabilities. You can either borrow this chef until the end of the next fight, or take a Fortune token instead.

1.3) Arming Gladiators
Your gladiators can train in bare-handed combat as Fighters. Weapons are easier to buy or craft in bulk, but diversity is usually better in the arena. You lack connections with weapons dealers, and many wont want to be associated with an 11 year old child. You won't have much support from the family to represent you until you start winning some fights. Thanks to the wood sculptor, it is free to arm them with a wood gladius. This basic sword is a Gladiator's first training weapon in most cases. The audience frequently tosses in this type of weapon, so some training with it may quickly come into play. You can either accept the wood sculptor, who will be available long enough to carve each of your Gladiators their own wood gladius for free, or take a Favor token instead.

Of course, you can only choose 1, though you could reject both. This will likely be the last you receive any additional resources or help from the family for you hobby. If you have any competency then the earnings from victories should be sufficient to sustain it, asking for more help will be seen as proof of your ineptitude. From here on out you are on your own.

Use tokens to take action.

A servant comes forward to collect some information.
Slaves, submit to registration and ascend to Gladiators!

1.4) What is your Race?
A. Human: The most common humanoid. They make-up the majority population of Rome and many other empires.
B. Dwarf: A stout humanoid. They were formerly persecuted by Rome for their worship of Armok, the religion is now embraced by many Romans in the land of bloodsports. Being too plump for crosses, those to be put to death often fought as Gladiators, where they earned respect and some, their freedom. Dwarves now make up a modest portion of Roman citizens. Frequently seen in roles of merchants and shop owners. -5 Agility, +5 Resilience.
C. Elf: A thin humanoid with pointy nose and ears. Often found in prominent positions in Roman society, such as philosophers, Houses nobles, and members of the Senate. They oversaw the transition away from chopped wood to grown wood as a building material. They only make up a small population of Rome, and mostly gained power and influence by being biologically immortal. They have learned to embrace and even help expand man vs beast bloodsports, though insisted on more even fights than in the past. -5 Resilience, +5 Agility.
D. Unknown: Same stats as human, for now. Can change later when clarified to something fitting your description.
E. Custom Request: No inhuman body parts like tusks, tails, horns, claws, etc.

Would you like to share anything else?
(Such as age, eye color, or hair color? Some personal history?)

Gotta be real with you all, I haven't ironed out the TRAITS purpose in battle yet. I think the final result wont be too surprising, but I figured you'd rather not wait any longer...even if it means training vaguely defined stats...but they will each be a worthwhile investment. The racial modifiers are fairly small in the longrun(if you survive) so.. don't sweat that too much.

Another thing you can opt to include is if your gladiator has any dreams or aspirations if they win their freedom(or escape). Such as to return to family, pursue a career, etc.

I suppose excess body hair isn't inhuman, but a tail and cat ears pretty squarely is.

Edit: Also, fangs and claws would be natural weapons, which was the point of the limitation to avoid. If you want to suggest something else go ahead(locking thread, so PM me), for now I'll register you as "unknown".

The chef is offended by your offer, you are trying to outbid your own family and failing miserably. You think you hear "Spoiled brat!" muttered under their breath as they exit, but not clearly enough to be certain. Your ear twitches in agitation, then you tell your assistant to find someone else for what you're willing to pay, and they come back with someone that was probably living off the street until just now. They claim to have some experience in the kitchen though. Before you can react your assistant whispers to you, "That amount was less than the cost of ingredients." An elf wood sculptor arrives. He says all that he will need is some soil and time. He begins planting seeds. The physician inspects the gladiators, their last "fight" gave them a few bumps and bruises, but he expects them to recover fully. "They just need to be fed to put on some weight."

Month 1

The chef blew all expectations away, even though they were left with nothing to work with, they confessed to having made due with edible display plants from around the barracks. Being on the street had made them resourceful, and having access to sufficient equipment allowed them to utilize their training from before they fell on hard times. It's a trick however, they won't be able to pull off twice. It's time to go grocery shopping. The sculptor says he is not finished. It must be easy being patient when you never grow old. The physician inspects the gladiators a second time, and finds them fully fit to train. "Keep feeding them like that, and they'll be in even better shape in the future."

The guards gathered up all the captives, two elves, a dwarf, a giant, a human, and...something else, maybe. They marched everyone out to the Ludus, the gladiator training school grounds to begin.

Gladiator Manager, here's your second chance!
You will be very busy scheduling fights on the next turn, you now have time to attend to what ever business you think is most urgent...

Use tokens to take action.

Note: Gladiator stat progression is locked. Assume you already have optimal trainers and equipment.

1.5) Fate Tokens
Fate Tokens represent the will of the Gods guiding your family. While these tokens will see the greatest level of success, they may also have massive unexpected impacts not just to your family, but across Rome as a whole. Principles of karma and superstition, like the Gods are reflective of the belief of the people. Some responsibilities and traditions are tied to concepts of what is lucky or just, and will have a Fate token cost to refuse them. You can do so even if you are out of Fate tokens, but you will gain negative Fate tokens casting a dark cloud over your family.

Naming Gladiators
Some of your gladiators did not register a name. All you know is their 2-letter slave ID from the auctionhouse. You can give them a nickname if you want to. Slave ID's are seen as tacky in big fights. You can also change their chosen names, though some say that is bad luck. Pay one Fate token to rename all gladiators.

Spoiler: Resources (click to show/hide)

Gladiators, begin your training!

1.6) These are your T.R.A.I.T.S.

Technique is a Gladiator's proficiency at their current job. There can be multiple Technique (Job) skills on an individual Gladiator.
Resilience is a Gladiator's stamina and endurance.
Agility represents a Gladiator's physical prowess and swiftness. Higher Agility often indicates quicker movements and attacks. (Priority)
Intelligence is a Gladiator's familiarity with invoking or evoking the powers of their various gods. Higher Intelligence means more frequent and potent use of magical equipment of all types. If enemy intelligence is higher, enemy stats are hidden.
Theatrics represents a Gladiator's ability to draw in the crowd. Higher Theatrics generally indicates better favor from the crowd, patrons, and more.
Strength represents a Gladiator's, well, strength. Higher Strength means they can hit harder, and with bigger things.

Training 1/2 (OOC challenge)

Choose 1 trait to train:

For Agility, Strength, or Resilience...
Do 15 minutes of exercise.
No proof. I trust you don't care.

For Theatrics, Intelligence, or Technique...
Share some real world trivia either related to hand-to-hand combat or Roman culture.
Can be brief.

1.7) Races, pt.2
Giant: Hailing from England, these larger humanoids have difficulty with many common entrances, though they are much more "domestic-sized" than true giants. Smarter due to generations of family ties with humans, they are still quite dumb. Despite being part human, they often find the smell and taste of their blood quite appealing, especially humans with roots in England. Giants that are unable to suppress their more primitive impulses are often sold into slavery, where the value of their labor is unmatched. -5 Intelligence, +5 Strength
Kemonomimi: A human-like race that have furry ears resembling cats, dogs, or some other animal. In Japan, elves have always served an honorary role as their matchmakers. This was a deal made long ago, when large fluffy eared goblin-humans sought their help to join civilization. Elve's slowly divided them into animal-themed clans based on appearance and behavior, and their bloodlines now possess their distinctive ear features. Many human marriages lessened their goblin features over the generations. Elves don't usually bother to write a will, but those that do often include a cherished Kemonomimi servant in them. -5 Strength, +5 Theatrics

A common tick of autism is repeated behaviors, for me this is often expressed through my repeated listening of a song for vibes. Vocaloids tend to be less grating on loop I find. I think I kind of identify with them, too.

Anyway, a yellowgreen skin edit of an animal girl I sent to Syv when I was selling the race concept.

"New toys!" Your personal guards are in shock as the blond haired, cat-eared child tries to crawl onto the back of the large one. The slave-giant lifts her up for a piggyback ride on his shoulders. Scintilla scolds them to lower their weapons, but they stay close at all times. You assistant chimes in. "That one's name is Bulk." Bulk, having seen the cat ears, wonders if the human has some too. "Let's go Bulk!" The giant stomps over to the human. "No name registered for that one." The human sits, and look up at the silhouette blocking the sun. A large hand pats his head. When the giant seems surprised by not finding animal ears in the hair, the teenage boy insists they are not a Kemonomimi, getting quite irritated. Bulk frowns sadly
"Oh sorry not-furry pur-son"..."HUG INSTEAD THEN!"
"N-no that won't be necessary!"
The teenager races of, and Bulk pursues until he is stopped. The personal guards catch up from behind, ahead it's the guards from the family. "Your father forbids contact. He says you promised. You promised it won't be like last time..."

Scintilla gets a guilty, sulking face and climbs down. Bulk stomps off to train alone.

Month 2

The human is sprinting around the oval ludus grounds, with the dwarf huffing and puffing to keep up. The...gremlin? Yeah, definitely a gremlin...is getting encouragement from a trainer and Scintilla, as beads of sweat drip down their wrinkled forehead, while trying to balance as long as they can on a tall post, like those the giant and one of the two elves is on. The other elf sits in silence as they study in the library until the dinner bell rings. No one seems particularly excited, but they don't hesitate to collect at the dinning hall...

The chef's meals this month consist of slop day after day. Everyone is fed, but Bulk looks worse than just last month. The chef urges stocking up for next training season, so his talents are not wasted. "A caveman could serve this." Bulk turns with a curious, hungry look. "No offense" the English chef amends. The giant's stomach growls...

Heading off to eat something a bit more decadent, Scintilla finds the wood sculptor relaxing in the evening sun, eating grapes delicately. When asked about the swords he yawns, and says he might not be able to finish them before your first fight. "It's a coin toss I'd say. You can't rush nature!" He assures they will definitely be ready for your second fight. You then meet with the physician, who cautions against booking more than one fight, as their services will expire and will be unavailable after that. You have one more matter your assistant brings to your attention. Unfortunately, after the chef harvested some decorative plants last month, many are now dead. It's starting to look pretty drab, which doesn't reflect well on you.
As a small favor, your family will cover the increased gardening expenses on the ludus grounds to replace them. However, the favor will surely seem trivial and be forgotten, if you can manage to actually win.

Spoiler: Roster (click to show/hide)

Gladiator Manager, it's time to show your family this isn't just for pretend!

You cannot spend tokens this turn.

1.8) Booking Fights
The Minor League is open and accepting new teams, you can now book up to 3 back-to-back fights. All gladiators must continue to the next one regardless of injuries, though dead gladiators can be replaced by new ones. Some fights will be different next season. The entry fee will be refunded if you win. If you retreat from a fight the patron will usually refund it if your team fought well. You will be charged at the start of the fight, so you could acquire the necessary resources from proceeding fights. If you book multiple fights, you will have to payback the entry fee of any you decide to cancel! Be careful, if you have negative...
...fortune you will be forced to liquidate assets, or even retire.
...favor you will need to appease those to whom you are indebted too. What is at stake will depend on who.
...fame, you can expect everyone to avoid helping or being associated with you. You may be forced to retire if not dealt with quickly.
...fate you will upset the Gods themselves.

Gambler's Alley is a seedy underground fighting pit. Each fight will contain at least 1 unknown opponent, and the rival manager will have 1 unknown token. While there must be a thin veneer of plausible deniability, here manager interference is pretty much expected. The crowd wants blood.

Jungle Hunt is an event put on by mostly elf politicians. They accept completely inexperienced gladiators and and the prizes are as great as the danger. The animals must first be found, and gladiators can spread out and engage in separate encounters. You keep the carcass of any animal killed. They can either be displayed to increases your fame and reveal stats in the bestiary, or can be harvested to make enchanted bone equipment. The crowd likes strategy and cooperation.

Rookie have 55 traits.
Veteran have 65 traits.

Note: Gladiators will be gaining reputation under which ever names they have at the end of this turn. Review 1.7, Naming Gladiators. By default you will be the "Constantine Gladiators" which has no reputation yet. Choose a new team name now to begin gaining reputation as something else.

Night Action (Gladiator Manager)
Your father has asked you write him how things are going. Write a brief letter in a PM with the title "Night Action". Make your final booking choices in this PM aswell, specify the order. When your character retires or is otherwise permanently removed from the story, your letters (and thus, all these PMs) will be revealed...

Spoiler: Resources (click to show/hide)

Gladiators, make your final preparations.

Training 2/2 (IC challenge)

Choose 1 trait to train:

For Technique, Agility, or Theatrics...
Tell a joke from the perspective of your gladiator.

For Resilience, Intelligence, or Strength...
Write a journal entry from the perspective of your gladiator. PM it with your night action. Post your trait choice in the thread.

Joke/journal entry can be brief.

Night Action (Gladiators)
This may be your last night. You can make a secret prayer to the Gods in a PM with the title "Night Action". When your character dies or is otherwise permanently removed from the story, your journal (and thus, all these PMs) will be revealed...

1.9) Races, pt.3
Gremlin: A twisted descendant of hobbits, these cave dwellers have been spoiled on a diet of blind fish, found in abundance deep within mountain caverns. They appear as a decrepit hobbit with bald spots, a hunched posture and poor teeth, regardless of age, with spindly fingers and exaggerated ears and eyes. They can be obsessive over shiny and rare enchanted artifacts. Like elves, they are biologically immortal, though perhaps gained on an individual basis from magical contamination. They are difficult to civilize due to poor manners and an unbound curiosity for forbidden places. Always mischievous, any unexplainable happenings are quickly blamed on gremlin antics! -5 Theatrics, +5 Intelligence

Training continues...

Booking Fight A, against the White Flag, first.  I presume I'll choose how to spend any cheating tokens after the fight begins, not now.
Booking Fight C, against 2 Raptors, after the White Flag fight is won.  I understand that we might have to back out of this if the white flag fight goes poorly, losing Scintilla a favor token.

As for Gladiator names:
HP, Hops' gladiator, is being renamed to "The Grand Vizier of Horripilation, Nyarlathotep von Dracula".  Scintilla will insist that its title is VERY important, and will do her best to get it included in full, in every recording of the name.
KZ, King Zultan's gladiator, is being renamed to "The Peregrinate Pontiff, Poltroon Vastan".  Again, the title must be included in full.  This is IMPORTANT.
FF, Fluffe's gladiator, is being renamed to "Scrambles".

Hey just checking in. I think I need to take a formal break, I've got a few new games I need to shepherd closely and I think if I push forward with glads now, I might get burnout. The battle(s) will be back-to-back, with updates every 2 days probably going by the tutorial. Anyway it's been a week so I figured I'd check in.

I'll leave the thread open for discussion/roleplay.

Edit: What would you guys think about me making this PvP (crossforum vs other managers and their gladiators)?

Edit: Nevermind.

I was taking some time to assess what is important to me, and I realized one of those goals is to always have a crossforum game going, so if it wasn't glads it would be something else. I had thought it would be a comic game like PanicArena, but perhaps glads could be an ongoing crossforum game in the downtime. I'm not sure if making glads crossforum is infact what I want to do, I just feel like I am missing out on making any progress on my crossforum goal right now, and it was an idea to move in the right direction for me.

Gambler's Ally

*Knock-knock*
A slit slides open in a maroon magnusite door. After a pause, it closes.
*Knock!!-knock!!*
The slit slides open, a bulging eye examines the void, then looks down at Miss Scintilla.
"Excuse Me!"
"Who are you?"
"I'm the manager of Constantine Gladiators, I..."
There is a thunderous laughter.
"..I have a fight booked against The White Flag. I didn't get a confirmation...but..."
"One moment...."

The slit slams shut.
...
...
... ... ...
*Knock!!-knock!!-knock!!*
The slit slides open. "huh? Oh you, The manager of The White Flag says you are a nobody, get lost."
*SLAM*
"Daddy was right, this place is a dump!"

Jungle Hunt

A mature female voice mutters something so only she will hear "...'The Grand Vizier of Horripilation, Nyarlathotep von Dracula'...title is VERY important...get it included in full, in every recording of the name...'The Peregrinate Pontiff, Poltroon Vastan'...Again, the title must be included in full. This is IMPORTANT..." The announcer looks through a list of demands from Scintilla in how to address each of her gladiators. The elf scans it with a monocle, then tosses the paper.

"Send in the meat."

The gladiators ascend through a platform in the ground. The guardrail sinks back down, leaving an old dwarf, a teenage human, a cueball giant, two elves and a potbelly gremlin under a sunny sky. The clearing is surrounded on all sides by jungle. The mesmerizing spell of singing cicadas is interrupted when an odd horn is blown.

Spoiler: Team Rosters (click to show/hide)

Gladiator Manager, Welcome to the Show...

Manager Puppeteering
Spending Tokens is possible, however among these elven aristocrats you had better do so subtly, or be disqualified...or worse.

Manager Orders
You can bark commands for your gladiators, though they may have other ideas how to protect their life. Talking to your gladiators will make humanoids aware of your plans, and reveal their location to intelligent animals.

Spoiler: Resources (click to show/hide)

Gladiators, Welcome to the battlefield...

Formation
A formation is the way each team is arranged. It has two rows, front and back. You can change positions for free, doing so does not count as your action. If you are in the front row, your attacks get a +1 roll bonus when attacking anyone on the enemy's front row. If you are in the back row, enemies attacking you will get a -1 roll penalty, unless they are flanking. (flanking will be reviewed later)

Action
Try to attack or defend, you can use punches, kicks, or anything you could reasonably do. This is the fight of your life!

Jungle Hunt
You can travel to a new area for your action. Beware that animals may ambush you if you have both lower agility and are outnumbered. You cannot go from North Jungle to South Jungle, or West Jungle to East Jungle, directly. The Central Meadow is always visible.

You need to defeat 2 Raptors to win...

Begin the Hunt!

((Here's my real thoughts. Was this a mistake on my part? Not really...I said first fight, and this is certainly that, but there's some maybe roleplaying oversight or something in regards to time passing. Let me say this, I have, and will make larger, more obvious mistakes. Usually, unless it doesn't require changing my written story or gameplay plans, I'm going to let my mistakes stand. Remember, mistakes are not always negative, there is no NPC that can lawyer how an error I made makes things more difficult. There's also the matter of severity of the mistake. There is very little here. The wood weapons, without training, are no more effective than unarmed combat. There is maybe some different roleplay potential, and there wont be an opportunity to gain technique with them at the end. If you are still unsatisfied, I encourage you to pursue the matter (in game), in addition to your tokens, you can send your assistant to run errands, and make use of your other servants. You can also speak to the elves. Roleplay, mistakes are a part of any meaningful story.))

I do respect your character work, I understand you feel this is out of character to fight the gladiators with, no swords. I'm literally writing this moments after waking up, because I do care that much. Respect is earned, and this our first time playing together...give me a chance to earn yours. You already have mine, even if I don't bend over backwards to give it to you in the form you think I should. A peace offering, my plan was to have Scintilla be shocked the elves didn't wait. Wait for your sculptor to drop of the swords. You still wont get them in the battle, but your character isn't forced to behave in a way you didn't want.))
Title: Re: Gladiator Manager

((or don't. You have an important role in this game, but you shouldn't have to play any game you aren't having fun with. If you think my style is unfair, then that's information you didn't have when you signed up. Things have changed, so I'd understand if you wanted to quit. I can have Scintilla be an NPC until after the raptor battle, then see if someone else wants to take over. I don't feel like this is unfair gameplay consequence for a gameplay mistake. You can probably expect similar minded decisons in the future.))

But yeah, I get it.  No swords.
I'm going to assume you're on board.

((My comment isn't just about the swords; it's about the broad game design.  You've chosen to design a difficult game where the players are a notable disadvantage, with a lot of penalties and problems to deal with.  The statement that the swords are functionally useless, as well as the apparent fact that there were apparently no good options for fights to take, pushed that over the line from "hard game" to "brutal game".  Your response amounting to "you made a mistake, so now you have to deal with it" didn't help.  That's not an inspiring GM style.  I could go into more detail--I'd love to, honestly--but I'm not in the right state of mind to do that fairly.
Please say you made poor design decisions because of "realism", I love that one
Generally, I'm okay with brutal games, though I still don't think they're good games.  In this case, I particularly dislike it because my mistakes here harm other people more than me.  I'm also upset over some IRL stuff that has nothing to do with this, which has me on a short fuse.  In any case, yeah, I know how this works, I've played enough of this kinda game.  I'll try my best to deal with it.))

I do prefer, if my hand is forced, to lean towards too hard than too easy. But let's take a look at my "brutal game", so far:

2 player kos (unconcious)
0 deaths
0 dismemberments
0 scars

Now, I'm not gunna pretend it is turkeies hiding in those bushes, it's not, and if there is not more application of the systems than the tutorial fight, people will probably die.

But this is very much a beginner fight. (I might be eating my words/those stats may look different after some bad rolls, but let's just see.)

In this case, I particularly dislike it because my mistakes here harm other people more than me.
Exactly!

That's thinking like a Manager.

Chapter 1 <BATTLE}---
(We've come a long way from poo-buckets! ...or have we?)

▼▼▼▼▼

Fixated amber eyes fill the void between jungle leaves, the breathing is repressed but there is a sinister rattle. Then, there is nothing.

Mosquitos bombard Bulk the giant and Ohwell the adolescent human boy as they absent mindedly bat them away. Stepping out of the shadow of the watchtower is the old man. The Peregrinate Pontiff, Poltroon Vastan rubs sweat from the top of his bald head. "Seems like we should stick together." His short dwarven legs carry him from side to side as he scans for a branch to use as a weapon. One of the elves, Grindak, follows the mustached baldy. The other elf moves passed The Grand Vizier of Horripilation, Nyarlathotep von Dracula, and takes in a breath of fresh air enthusiastically. "FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD HEHE!" The plump gremlin rolls their eyes and beckons others to come too, before turning to chase after Scrambles into the southern brush. The hypnotic song of the cicadas remains.

From the watchtower, Scintilla's eyes grow wide. "Erm. Weren't the glads supposed to be given wooden swords?" She whispers to the warden.
"They never arrived."
She turns and whispers to her assistant, with a pained look. "I don't think I would have sent the glads in without weapons. The swords being ready was very specifically what tipped me over into taking the gamble on the raptors, because otherwise it's too dangerous to be a good bet."
Hearing the shock of some of the other spectators, Scintilla glares at the warden. "You're not really interested in people having fun in your games, are you?  But yeah, I get it.  No swords."
The warden scratches their chin, then pulls out a crude knife from a sheath and holds it up for the others to see, before tossing it below, for which he gets an applaud.

At the foot of the tower, no one has found a branch, but Grindak has found a head-sized rock and collected some grass to weave into a rope. Then a few paces away, a crude knife lands in the meadow lawn with a thud.

It screams and runs at him with rows of teeth, and extended claws! "RAPTOR!"

Manager Puppeteering
Spending Tokens is possible, however at high-brow events you had better do so subtly, or be disqualified...or worse. in addition to your tokens, you can send your assistant to run errands, and make use of your other servants. You can also speak to the patron and staff. Roleplay! If you want, you can cancel the fight at any time. If you retreat from a fight the patron will usually refund the entry fee if your team fought well.

Manager Orders
You can bark commands for your gladiators, though they may have other ideas how to protect their life. Talking to your gladiators will make humanoids aware of your plans, and reveal their location to intelligent animals. All discussion of strategy with the gladiators must remain in-thread.

Watchtower
You can choose a direction to scan, you will see all concealed animals in that area, via PM.

Formation (Revised)
A Formation is the way each team is arranged. Typically there are 5 columns on the battlefield, and 2 rows per team---each team's front and back. You cannot attack the enemy's Back Row, but the enemy's Front Row can be attacked by anyone. Both teams form a Dynamic Front. If you have no teammates in front of you, you will be repositioned at the front of your column. If your column is unopposed on the enemy team, both your front and rear teammates have Flanking and can attack any back row enemies. You can Change Position for free, doing so does not count as your action, and resolves before everyone's actions. Please make it clear you want to change position, and that your movements are not flavortext, for me to acknowledge it. Otherwise you'll return to your former position after your action. Use key phrases like "I move in front of player" or behind, or which enemy to get in front of, or who to move left or right of. You can refer to the columns by number 1 to 5 from left to right. If you move infront of someone they will be sent back. Players that are skipped or incapacitated will be sent to the back if able.

Note: I decided positioning roll modifiers are too trivial, and they have all been removed. Instead attacking Rear targets is now prevented, for more meaningful defensive tactics.

Action
Try to attack or defend, you can use punches, kicks, or anything you could reasonably do. This is the fight of your life! Turn order will be determined by the Agility TRAIT. I use two 6-sided dice for action rolls. Attacks and Contested Actions versus an enemy may apply any of each other's relevant TRAITS. Uncontested Actions may also apply TRAITS and will be versus a default human, with a Difficulty Modifier of increasing positive or negative modifiers for very easy-but nontrivial, to very hard-but possible feats. Critical Rolls of 2 and 12 will ignore modifiers. When someone gets an attack roll of 5 or less, they are at Defensive Disadvantage. The worse you fail, the bigger the opening. Most defensive, silly, or passive actions will simply give you a Defensive Advantage of -1 on an enemy attack. Defensive advantage/disadvantage will be applied to the first attack on you, or dissipate when your turn comes around again. Actions with more than one distinct act involved may be broken down into multiple Subaction rolls. It's harder the more other things you try to do. A penalty of -1 for each subaction will stack on all subactions. "If/than" statements will be subactions, even if they don't activate. A failed subaction will cause child actions to be cancelled. Picking up an Item is a free trivial action, though if the item is contested the conflict could interrupt other subactions.

The hunt continues!

Damn mosquitoes! *bat!* What are we doing here in the jungle!? I thought we were supposed to be fighting in the ring. *Bat!* This is horrible, and we don't even get any kind of weapons!? I hate being a slave!

I turn towards the south jungle as I hear someone yelling "RAPTOR!" Oh great.

Try to find a sturdy stick with which to defend myself, and stealthily approach the beast from behind. If there is an opening, try to whack it with the stick (or if I don't have a stick, try to kick it).

Try to find a sturdy stick with which to defend myself as I begin heading towards the sound of the yell, staying alert and taking caution in every step.

Flanking doesn't really matter if no enemies are in the back row, so it's just flavor in this context. There's no other enemies in front of Fluffles guarding, that need to be 'Flanked'...yet.

"Go south!  Everyone pile on the raptor, hold it down and kill it with the knife!  And be quieter!"

Scintilla leans towards the battlefield, worry creasing her little face as she watches.

Hope raptors aren't considered intelligent animals that can divine where the gladiators are based purely on Scintilla's words.

Edit: move to face north of the glads before shouting, taking whatever position would be appropriate to view things in the north.  Scintilla's words should well be audible even if she's facing the wrong way, and this way it might confuse raptors.

Probably a safe bet. Intelligent animals wont comprehend the content, but generally shouting in a direction may imply a target listener.

Decades of experience with a wide variety of animals, as well as a general understanding of animal sapience, would disagree with that theory, but alright.  Action edited.  Thinking like this suits someone as young and disconnected as Scintilla, anyway; she lacks my knowledge and experiences.

The game warden is laughing with the aristocrats over the hilarity of taking on these powerful animals unarmed. An elf asks if they really meant to. The game warden shrugs and admits he heard there was a delivery of training weapons coming later. "The wood weapons, without training, are no more effective than unarmed combat. There is maybe some..."

Scintilla puffs up her cheeks and puts a finger on the warden's chest. "My comment isn't just about the swords; it's about the broad game design.  You've chosen to design a difficult game where the players are a notable disadvantage, with a lot of penalties and problems to deal with.  The statement that the swords are functionally useless, as well as the apparent fact that there were apparently no good options for fights to take, pushed that over the line from "hard game" to "brutal game."  Your..." The announcer stops relaying the action. The tall elf woman turns to the bellyaching child and says "SILENCE."

"Brutal? I know you participated in those ER games, where many go to die. Your bargain-bin 'gladiators' have no reputation, and nobody cares. So what, if we traded lions for raptors, and we improved the landscaping? These games are the same as they were over 1000 years ago.  These are Roman Bloodsports, shut your tiresome mouth...CHILD."

It begins to rain, obscuring the crowd's view from the watchtower. The wind picks up and the slick jungle leaves beat against each other. Under the canopy it is dry. Scrambles is running around, keeping distant. The raptor lunges, but The Grand Vizier of Horripilation, Nyarlathotep von Dracula steps forward.

Scintilla's assistant puts a hand on her shoulder. "Remember, remember what happened when you got attached, listen to your father..." Scintilla growls, and pulls away. She begins racing around the balcony, shouting orders at her gladiators. "Go south!  Everyone pile on the raptor, hold it down and kill it with the knife!  And be quieter!" Below the tower, Grindak and The Peregrinate Pontiff, Poltroon Vastan race over to the knife. Grindak hands it over to the old dwarf. The quiet elf begins tying the plant fibers they gathered into a rope, and tying up the large stone. He lifts it, then throws it out, and begins spinning, trying out the makeshift flail. Ohwell finds a chipped stick that might work as a shiv. The audience is impressed.

♥♥ Grindak is very generous, and the flail is quite clever!
♥ Ohwell's stick might do the trick!
♥ Vastan has the knife, will the old man know what to do with it?

The gremlin shoulder tackles the heavy beast mid-flight, and it topples to the dirt, but is quick to begin lining itself up for another attack, now on Dracula. Scrambles uses the opportunity to dart in---hoping to land a punch, but the raptor's knife filled mouth opens like a trap, and the dancing elf backs off.

Gladiators

Gladiator Reputation
The Jungle Hunt crowd likes strategy and cooperation. When your actions succeed to impress your gladiator will gain a '♥' (reputation point). As reputation increases, the audience will be more motivated to see that you are spared. At 50 reputation, a famous gladiator that impresses the Emperor will earn their freedom. Retired gladiators can become a bodyguard for the gladiator manager, become a rival manager appearing in the story and possibly taking over if the current one leaves/dies, or continue fighting as an Elite. If you have other ideas for your retired character, we can plan something together in PM. You can also start over as any animal or restricted race you've seen in the story.

You'll need to be where there is no obstacles or obstructions to get the crowd's attention and praise.

You've all for the most part been really good sports with this experiment. Hosting this ongoing game just doesn't feel like a priority right now. I took over a year off from burnout, and as much progress as I've made in pushing through and completing games more often as long as theirs interest, for now this project has me beat. I like this game, I just do not have it in me, for now. I can't do it right now, and I need to not try to force it or I didn't learn from my past mistakes. The gremlin shouts at the horror, but it already has the thing's attention. It screams and Dracula puts up both arms to block. Sickle shaped claws dig deep, but before blades of teeth can rake their face, the creature moves away from the approaching elf. Dracula is in shock, but terrific, hot, red, extreme pain catches up with him. A holler escapes the forest as birds fly away.

At the watchtower, the announcer struggles to make out what is happening through the trees and rain. Scintilla's knuckles are white, as she clenches the railing.

Looking down, Scrambles sees his companion's right arm is heavily bleeding. He looks back to see the raptor ducking repeatedly as if...mocking. From the leaves a second joins by its' side. It's covered in scar tissue, and it has a dead white eye and a bit of a hindering limp.

Gladiator Manager

Bench
One of your gladiators has sustained heavy bleeding. If the others bring him to the tower, away from the fight, you can have them removed to recover. A benched gladiator cannot return to a fight once they've left, and will lose half the reputation gained from the battle. They can refuse, but can be forced by the other gladiators if overpowered.

Gladiators

Injury Tokens
If you succeed a Survival Roll to your head or torso, or you are instead attacked on a limb, you may still suffer a painful and/or bleeding wound.
- Pain: Pain tokens accumulate on each body part separately. There is 2 stages: Pain, and Extreme Pain. Actions relating to the relevant body part will have -1 to rolls for Pain, and -2 for Extreme Pain.
- Bleeding: Bleeding tokens accumulate for the whole body. There is 3 stages, Bleeding, Heavy Bleeding, and Super Heavy Bleeding, and then death. Once you obtain heavy bleeding every turn you have with that token you will get 1 roll to see if it kills you or not!! Then 2 rolls for Super Heavy Bleeding.

(These tokens are from Immortal's Game (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=23529.0), the first Bay 12 RTD.)

The rain begins to clear up as suddenly as it began. "They seem to be engaging in the south." Motion in the jungle can vaguely be made out, but the announcer struggles to dictate anything solid.

The small girl with cat-like ears is approached by her servant doctor, and presented with a delicate yellow flower. "I've done some reading on giants. I believe these poppies were imported from England, and they may induce sleeping spells on giantfolk." Yellowgreen against all that yellow dotting the grassland, the physician's hand guides attention to the problem. "There's really no telling when it will wear off, days, weeks, longer, there's no way to be sure. He doesn't seem to be in harms way, but you may ask permission of the warden to have your guards retrieve him."

Faint raptor noises carry to the watchtower. The warden raises a flat hand to silence the crowd. "They have begun engaging in flanking patterns."

Between the dampened ferns and sweating tree trunks the gladiators stand close. The first raptor moves eagerly from side to side, trying to find a way around the formation to Dracula, but can't find an opening to flank the team. The scarred raptor charges right at Ohwell. It misses a snap at the man's youthful face, the fowl stench of meat scraps in its' teeth lingers in the air. He whips back in and clobbers the raptor in the head to discover the leathery skin is tough on knuckles. The beast's surprise is vocalized by chittering pain. Grindak whirls the heavy flail up to some speed, and yeets the meteor hammer at the raptor searching for Dracula. It bashes its' torso at a slipping angle, only causing a bark of mild pain. Old man Zultan Vastan takes the beast's momentary distress to grapple on its' back. He strikes repeatedly, but with all the thrashing the cuts are superficial and the raptor throws him off in a fit of pain. Clenching the tare in its' arm, The Grand Vizier of Horripilation, Nyarlathotep von Dracula's blood is pooling. The first raptor and Dracula lock eyes, and the creature grins as it sees an open path. The scarred raptor is looking for another snap.

Hmm, due to external circumstances it's been getting much harder for me to pay attention to this, but that's probably reasonable in-universe since I'm being nibbled.

Disengage from R1 and try to put a distance between me and it.

Refresher: Typically there are 5 columns on the battlefield, and 2 rows per team, front and back. A team cannot attack their opponent's back, but the front rows can be attacked by anyone. If your column is unopposed on the enemy team, both your front and rear teammates have Flanking and can attack any back row enemies. You can change position for free, doing so does not count as your action, and resolves before everyone's actions.

So right now, R1 can flank anywhere you go on the back row, because no one is in-front of them.

You have Heavy Bleeding right now, and each turn a d6 is rolled, and on a 1 you will die...if the battle ends, or you get to the watchtower so the manager can remove you, you will live.

Hmm, due to external circumstances it's been getting much harder for me to pay attention to this, but that's probably reasonable in-universe since I'm being nibbled.
I was having difficulty managing consistent updates, so that probably didn't help you to follow them. This was always an improvised game and I was clear about that from the start, but it was long overdue I made some decisions and stuck to them so I could host it easier.

(Oh thought this was abandoned my bad)
Burnout is always at a more progressed stage than it feels like it is. After bringing it up before, I tried to push through to the end of the battle, but I just had nothing left. This time around I'll be fighting this battle of my own with a more defensive stance, less fly-by-the-seat improvisation, and a bit more track-laying...I've got some changes based on feedback to drop, but I'm taking it slow, and doing the quiz as a refresher. If no one completes it I'll reveal the answers in the next one, so you can reference them.

Pooled water still trickles off the bamboo watchtower roof.

A dwarf adorned in red priest robes is making an irritated squinting face. "The greenery may be good for the sport, but not for the spectacle!"
"Usually they are too afraid to go in there,"
replies a posh elf, "or flee from it soon after."
The dwarf grunts. The elf grins.
"You know, I've seen these slaves before, at the auctionhouse. Bloodied up another lot twice their size."
"You don't say? Twice their size?"
"Well, minus that sleeping giant, of course."
"Does that mean they have a chance?"

The elf's grin sours. "You can't just enjoy sport for its' own sake!? Fine, I bet 100,000 Flaviah on the Auctionhouse Brawlers." A tiny pouch spills out teal coins on a small round table between them.
The dwarf drops a reticule of matching weight, then firmly shakes the elf's limp hand. "100,000 Flaviah? I take that as a no."

The cold air is warmed by the unobscured rays of the summer sun, yet the air is still moist. Already the cicadas resume their hypnotic chirping. The heat permeates the brush. Even in the sharp shadows of jungle leaves, it is hard to breath.

And yet, there are screams.

The Grand Vizier of Horripilation gets up on its' tiny gremlin legs, and hobbles away, dripping blood from it's slashed arms. The raptor won't give up her prey so easily. She clamps down on Dracula's head, but when it pulls away, all she is left with, is a clump of hair. The gremlin's hairdo continues to look just as patchy and mottled as any other day. Poltroon Vastan and Grindak rush in to help, the dwarf stabs the predator's left arm, the elf whips on the flail to smash her right. She roars in protest, and prepares to slap them both with her thick tail.

The sickly raptor creeps his way up to Ohwell and nearly nips the teen's arm. Scrambles darts in and delivers a punch to his right leg that's quick but painful, judging by the way he roars, and his wide white eye that stares at nothing. He stumbles to the ground! The gladiators exchange a quick optimistic glance.

Back at the watchtower, the warden is deliberately rubbing his chin. A nearby elf, grins.

I'll leave the bonus questions unanswered, and the prize of a Free Skip on 1 future question open. Maybe it will come in handy.

The OP has been updated to reflect gameplay and mechanics up to Pop Quiz 2. From now on, updates on passive mechanics will be spoilered. They may still be important, consider skimming over them or reading them for an advanced understanding of the game. Active mechanics are basic knowledge, so non-spoiled gameplay updates for your role are essential reading. Next time I will require 50% completion to proceed. This can be skipped with the Free Skip coupon, without reward. Most questions won't be from spoilers.

Gladiator Manager

1.10 - Personal Tokens
These new tokens are easier to to obtain than House Tokens, but have less potency and go away after battle. You can only obtain 1 type of personal token per turn, but if you also spent some you won't gain any. Reticule tokens ignore both of these limitations!
Rumor: Talking to minor NPC characters will give you this token type. Spend Rumor tokens to either start a new rumor, which will be harder the more outlandish it is, or to seek out gossip, possibly leading to new business and strategic opportunities.
Ruse: Talking to major NPC characters, such as the rival manager, will give you this type of token. Spend Ruse tokens to persuade NPCs into doing what you want, under the deception it is in their own interest.
Rapport: 1/10th of the combined Reputation of your gladiators equals how many of these tokens you start with. Rapport tokens are automatically exhausted to protect you from consequences when you upset authority. The severity of your error determines the amount lost. (I may award you 1 if you or a gladiator or spectator spot a significant error in my newest update. Or several helpful smaller ones over time.)
Reticule: Flaviah is the current currency in Rome. 1 Fortune token may be cashed out for ℱ500,000, for less abstract, and more precise bartering, albeit at a loss of purchasing power on a larger scale. Flavia can only be used in increments of 100,000, 1 Reticule token. Additionally, You start every battle with ℱ100,000. If you have ℱ1,000,000 or more at the end of battle, you will get 1 Fortune token. (For this battle only, it's ℱ500,000 or more.)
+1 Reticule

Note: As both raptors have converged on them, giving Manager Orders to the main gladiator group wont matter. In hindsight, perhaps I should have let your ruse to shout backwards work, at least once. Even if afterword I'd insist any communication demands shouting in their direction to be heard. I have decided to show generosity for your guile.
+1 Ruse

Gladiators

1.11 - Knock Out / Wake Up
Pain tokens will dissipate from each body part with no significant injury by 1 per turn, if none were added to it this turn. They ignore 1 pain token from each attack. If someone would receive pain tokens to either the head and torso when they already have 2, they will pass out, until pain tokens dissipate from those parts. Someone who is knocked out can be woken up by someone else. If both legs have 2 pain tokens, a biped wont be able to stand.
Note: Injuries will now be classed based on minimum residual pain, either Trivial(0), Minor(1), or Major(2). Also, while the rate of bloodloss is cumulative for the whole body, effectively treating a bleeding wound will decrease bleeding tokens. Perhaps the audience will throw you a rag in a pinch. You can also tend to each other.

1.12 - Arena Dining
If you find safe food, you can improve your nourishment score by 1 stage for the rest of battle; more food won't make it go up more. This won't make up for months of undernourishment, so this is a temporary buff.

1.13 - Reading Opponents (..literally)
While players change position for free at the start of the turn, the opposition will only change position at at the end of the turn, so you will always know if they are able to flank. They may also have 'tells' for their upcoming actions. Try to discern their temperament to predict their behavior on future turns, then make a plan to use their habits to your advantage.
Note: See Damage Types in the Roll Modifiers spoiler for more tactical incentives.

Spoiler: Roll to Dodge (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Roll Modifiers (click to show/hide)

TL;DR
- A single 2d6 'Roll to Dodge' now (instead of 2d6 vs 2d6). Missing attacks gives smaller penalties to favor more aggressive gameplay.
- Light Weapons are easier to hit with, using Agility. Heavy Weapons can hit harder, using Strength. Various other gear modifiers.
- Slice, Stab, and Blunt attack action traits added.

Note: I have decided to limit it to 1 booked fight per outing, for a more standardized player commitment. I have gone back and renamed this 'Chapter 1: Battle', with 'Chapter 1: Prepare' being the first half of the chapter. Re/sign-ups will only be between chapters. The rewards for completing this hunt have been doubled to compensate this change.

To promote discussion and cooperation, and accommodate mixed availability, actions will be locked-in only after at least 7 days have passed. Relax. (https://youtu.be/oIp1e0TtMGs) Please make a new post when changing your action. If everyone who submitted an action last turn, did so again, the manager can lock-in actions early.

(Aside: 15 updates is typically the length of a full game I shoot for so seeing that little one-five down there...it feels pretty damn good. This update standardizes a lot of stuff I was winging-it on, and frankly, stressing over. Thanks for your patience. As far as Bulk, Horizon has a history of dipping out from time to time, I'm sure we all miss the lovable cannibal. If he comes back, he'll be welcomed. I hope everyone found atleast 1 thing they liked in this update. Maybe just that it happened lol)

The hunt continues!

The gremlin is at risk of bleeding out, so not a great place for a swap. I'll interpret "please replace me" as ask to be benched. If you comeback to B12 someday, check out this series, if I am still running it. Perhaps Drac will make it out, maybe not.

Edit: I'm only anticipating a few turns left, for this battle. In comparison the auction house was 6 turns, and this was 5. For chapter 2 I'll do open signups, but I'm not looking to do replacements for the end of this one.

Meimie has contacted me, and is too busy for rpg forum games. So what does this mean?

Well seeing as 2 players let me know, it seems reasonable to take that as an action to leave the arena, meaning there is as many active gladiators as afk ones*. That isn't great, and if that were all I'm not sure it would be right to continue. However, the presence of the manager does tip the scales a bit, perhaps enough. I'm going to dare to assume you will try, and lock-in actions. This match has surely gone on long enough to avoid any penalties for ending the fight now, so if that's what the GM wants to do (next turn) let me know.

*Edit: Actually 3:2, better

Fun bit of trivia...

Ok so I tracked down MURELIOUS (listed as the creator of the old StarCraft map that inspired this rp campaign) here was a summary of our interview:

Quote from: R
Is this the StarCraft gladiator map guy? If so nice! I am curious what year exactly you published the first version.

Made By Babas 40 thievz (A.K.A. Murelious)

Quote from: M
Oh man... Well, that's 100% me, and I totally forgot about this.

That said I can't really take credit for this. I think I took someone else's map and started modifying.

It's been a loooong time so I don't remember the details

Quote from: R
Oh man! What a legend. I'm hosting a roleplaying session based on it right now.

How much exactly was there before you started? Anything even slightly recognizable has always had your name attached. Did you come up with punching bags, prostitutes, gladiator manager exploration? Closest thing at the time was a Pokemon RPG...
Note: Prostitutes were the game's version of guards.

Quote from: M
That's weird. I honestly don't remember creating all of that. I'm pretty sure most of that was taken from someone else. I remember really liking it and wanting to add my own spin / some balance things. Definitely not the original creator though. I wish I could take more credit.

Quote from: R
Oh man! That's wild, what a rabbit hole. If you ever remember anything, any leads  so I could find the original version/creator lmk. thanks for making it popular/fixing it up  definitely a substantial improvement between each of you major versions, particularly 4 , 5, and 6

The Old Dragon? I found a crashed cruiser with that name, same folder as your 'created by babaz40thieves' radio station building. I'll use that handle as a placeholder  Thanks for setting the record straight.
Note: A common SC map making practice was to 'sign' it by renaming a building or unit and placing it somewhere on the map, basically an Easter egg.

(if you can't tell, which you probably can, I was totally geeking out)

Anyway, that's all for now. Next post from me will be a game update.♥

(Updated:)

Quote from: M
Yea I just asked my buddy about it. He's as confused as I am about me getting credit for it all. I should only have credit for one of those, and not even an impressive update either.

Regardless, best of luck on finding the right credits. I admire your perseverance in this pursuit. Wish I were your guy haha.

Quote from: R
Thank you!

Huh, it seems like 'Babas 40 thievz' really was a 'thief', I guess you really can read a book by its cover.

Scintilla nudges a random seated observer, and whispers in their ear. The aristocrat turns with an incredulous look, "My dear, do you think I'd carry something so trite on my person?" The announcer glances back to shoot a look of suspicion at the small lanista. Then, a distraction. Two weary gladiators leave the jungle to join one that never made it inside.

♥ Ohwell is escorting a wounded companion, how nice!

Coming out of the wild growth at a cautious pace The Grand Vizier of Horripilation Nyarlathotep von Dracula, and Ohwell, step through the meadow and approach from below. Stepping to either side of Bulk Muscles, they stop beside the sleeping giant. The teenager raises his middle and index fingers together, a gesture for submission he learned back at the training school. Meanwhile the deranged eyes of the potbellied gremlin are cast down, as the immortal holds blooded arms crossed in front. The announcer is saying something...and those below hear her list off their names. Then the gladiators descend through the platform in the ground. But just before the exodus of gladiators are closed off completely, a deep voice manages to echo, one last time. "Thank you for letting Bulk stay Bulk."

Given Dracula's injuries, it seemed that the peaceful meadow was a naive facade for the action that had been unfolding just beyond.

...A short while before.

The normally silent Grindak let's loose a deep grunt as he leaps to the right, while the wide-eyed Vastan takes a direct tail slap from the female raptor. "Hehe! Hoho! I dont even know where I am! Hahah!" Scrambles is weaving through the calamity. Ohwell finds the wooden shiv he lost. Dracula is looking dizzy. "Ah crap..." Ohwell stands close and the old gremlin leans on the young human. If he didn't help it to the doctor himself, it might not make it. "Unfortunately I won't have time for this at the moment, sorry!" he exclaims. "Good Luck—" he added, before tossing the shiv up in the air, allowing the quick-footed Scrambles to catch it on reflex, "—Have Fun though!"

Just after they disappear, Scrambles uses the primitive stabbing weapon to attack the fallen raptor, scoring a light stab on the flailing creature's right leg while avoiding its' claws. The Peregrinate Pontiff rolls up onto his feet, and get to other side of it, nicking its' left arm.

The alpha raptor, claws wide like a net, makes a screaming dash for Scrambles!

Gladiators are the 'Away Team' colored.

You got it!

Looks like there is still interest in this after all. I was kind of doubting it after the very, very easy riddle was given up on(it was intended as a virtually free reward). I also felt I didn't give the game mechanics their best impression as this game has been played a lot more shallowly than designed. You can target body parts, that's 90% of the tactics. So it was my job to make that more clear and I didn't want to just leave it with that misunderstanding.

I think I'll flip the map on its' side, like seen here. that seemed to help Horizon out.

"So, what did I miss?"

"Daddy! Daddy! You came!"

Scintilla embraces her cat eared father, and he pats her on the head.

"How is my little Snapdragon?"

He looks up, and the announcer and warden acknowledge the arrival of the head of House Constantine with a respectful head nod.

Everyone has treated you well, I expect?"

The announcer stiffens.

The alpha swipes with her claws and Scrambles...barely...leaps back in time. The dangling part of his purple sash gets perforated, revealing his green belly and three thin red lines growing darker on it. The other elf responds by whipping his small boulder at her chest, and the raptor lets out a dry hiss. Her nostrils instantly start bleeding. The old dwarf pounces on the downed beta, stabbing his chest again and again, until its' wild eye seems more dead than before, and its' jaw goes slack.

There is shaking. Something heavy is moving closer. A roaring giant grins through the leaves. A young man steps out from behind him.

...A short while before.

As sunlight above dims on the underground platform, the mechanical echo of guards turning a large crank grows louder, but all Ohwell hears is the droplets of Dracula's blood hitting the falling floor. As the platform slams to the ground, two guards rush to take Dracula from Ohwell's hands. They are accompanied by a short old hag, aswell as the manager's physician. He begins disrobing the gremlin. Its' tattered crimson sash falls to the floor. The woman's gruff voice gives commands, but Ohwell can't make out most of it.

As they march off carrying the limp body, the teenager kneels to study the pooled fabric. He didn't know Dracula well, but the gremlin trained with him, starved with him, in the ludus and before at the prison. Their group had kind of become an oddball family in a short time. He remembers Bulk chasing the cook around, like he was going to eat him and making Scintilla laugh. The elves, Grindak studying in the library trying to concentrate, and Scrambles knocking over his piles of books so many times while doing parkour, that Grindak knew to nudge them out of his path without even looking. He remembers sparring with the old dwarf, a respectful partner despite their age difference, but totally different in height and waist-size. Dracula was always a better match for Poltroon Vastan to practice the basics with, but he was often off somewhere, getting into mischief and exploring...

The old hag approaches Ohwell and smiles. The rattle of chains means the guards are ready to lock him up and take him away from his friends, who are in danger right now.

The boy looks back one last time...and squints at the sun in disbelief! It's...

From outside, just before the hatch shuts, large fingers grip the sides and hold it open.

♥♥ Bulk is finally awake, and is pulling Ohwell up with him, how surprising!

♥♥ Ohwell is going back to the fight, what a determined teammate!

The game warden peers off into the distance as the two rejoin the others, listening carefully to the sounds of beasts and men. "If you'd like, Miss Malison, I'd be willing to call it a draw."

Bulk Muscles and Ohwell fill in the ranks. The scrawny teenager tosses the husky dwarf a red bit of cloth. "For Dracula." Poltroon Vastan nods and ties the shredded sash over his. The alpha raptor screams death, and the gladiators, scream back. Because they know, not just that they can win, they will! The terrible lizard whips around to try to slap the dwarf and the man in the chest with her terrible tail.

"Perhaps I can interest you in an alternate reward?"

The game warden pulls something round out of his vest, and presents the white oval before Scintilla. He turns it slowly, as if selling it to her. The surface has a mesmerizing pattern of swirling ridges, and the precious thing almost tapers off to a point.

"It's a raptor egg."

She knows that look on her father's face, he's getting ready to say 'no'.

Gladiator Manager

Your father showing interest in your hobby has increased your available Rapport for the match, making all of your manager maneuvers, safer. Also, the warden has publicly offered a draw and thus acknowledged you as a peer(riddle solved), which has also increased this resource.

Sidenote: From now on each Quiz will be posted at the end of a chapter, and the rules will be updated before sign-ups for the next chapter begins. The reward for a quiz will now be +1 random House Token for every 5 of the 15 questions answered correctly, and the quiz will cover both Manager and Gladiator topics. In the event of little or no new gameplay material to review, questions will be more trivia and story based.

Gladiators

Here's some advanced information you can apply for the rest of the match, and study for the future...

Advanced Combat

Let's take a look at how combat works in a bit more detail, some of these things are being revised and refined somewhat.

1.14 - Targeting Body Parts
Depending on how you describe your attack, it will strike one of the humanoid Body Parts, those being Head, Torso, Left Arm, Right Arm, Left Leg, and Right Leg, though if left ambiguous it will always target the Torso(previously random). You can explicitly state one of these targets for more control, or leave it up for interpretation. The torso is easiest to hit, and if you would miss a Torso attack their dodge roll gets -1. Beasts may have unique body parts, like tails or wings, and often have natural weapons like horns, teeth, and claws.

1.15 - Attack Types
Depending on how you describe your attack, it will usually be classified as one of the common Attack Types, those being Stab, Slice, or Slam(formerly referred to as Blunt). You can explicitly state one of these types for more control, or leave it up for interpretation. Only sharp weapons can perform Slices and Stabs, but all weapons can perform Slam attacks, like the hilt of a blade weapon, but will have disadvantage if not designed for it. Try using the different attacks types depending on where you aim.
- Slam: If HIT, -1 to enemy dodge roll against an unprotected head, causing a permanent KO for the match on a critical dodge fail.
- Stab: If HIT, -1 to enemy dodge roll against an unprotected torso, causing instant death on a critical dodge fail.
- Slice: If HIT, -1 to enemy dodge roll against unprotected limbs, amputating on a critical dodge fail.
(Critical rolls for Attack Types replace the general critical rolls for attacks.)

1.16 - Blocking
You can block a body part with another body part, a weapon or object, or a shield. A body part will be considered "unprotected" if the armor or blocking item fails a gear clash with the weapon(superior material manages to break inferior).

1.17 - Hobbled and Immobile
If one leg is in extreme pain/crippled, a unit gets no initiative bonus and may only attack enemies in the front row, even if they are not blocked. If both legs are in extreme pain/crippled, a unit cannot change position or get advantage. An ally can still send them to the back row by moving in front of them.

1.18 - Disarming
A held weapon is dropped when the wielder's arm is in extreme pain, and cannot be picked up by the owner until/unless the pain dissipates to regular pain or below.

|_|O=(‘-‘Q) (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLXOlOC1_qIetS-tHa08DeZXqkD2MlB4I)

I've made a personal decision to not post any new games in 2023 that are not comic forum games. That said, games from before, like this one can continue as long as interest remains. Otherwise there wont be a sequel to this before 2024.

It's possible there will be more pauses. I really wish I could run this like the first prologue chapter and be fast and consistent, but sometimes I just stare at the screen and just can't. I may hold off on introducing new stuff like weapons and armor, or more animal units or special arenas, until I feel like I can get into a better rhythm without too much stuff going on. I know I am not the only game host that struggles with this, but I really want to prove to myself I still can keep up pace. I will probably fail in that goal again and again, but I will always try to stack the deck in favor of my success.

I'm also waaay more attached to your characters than I should be for a game about life and death, and I have to admit, this update was exciting to write. I reduced the gladiator limit from 7 to 5, so even with hops gone, we do have a full party...I think? I wanted to match the OG StarCraft player colors, so I needed an excuse for King Zultan's character to switch from limegreen to red, hopefully my solution was sensible enough. :)

(BTW I'm not going to turn this into a comic game, but I imagine it would look something like this (https://i.imgur.com/nr54SPQ.png).)

You have a week, take your time, discuss. It will be good practice for harder battles!

Long A: (More specific) Well a 'Suggestion Game' is fairly well defined format. They will be Illustrations/Images AKA Comics, the 'I' in ISG. I tend to do player based games though, not the crowd controlled protagonist games (SGs) much. So Illustrated games yes, but ISG specifically? Not primarily.

Fun bit of trivia... Part 2

(Part 1 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=179495.msg8408181#msg8408181))

So last time, MURELIOUS confessed they had little to do with actually making the old StarCraft map that inspired this rp campaign, but wished me luck finding them.

Well I did. Sort of...

I brought my findings back to him, since he found the research interesting.

The Source 2002  You said my hunt was interesting, this is the holy grail.

Quote from: M
Ahh integer8 is the name of the person who made it originally! That's fantastic

Quote from: R
I just played a few games  it's clunky, but can't deny a lot is there  manager needs to force the gladiators to exit battles  there's no karigan prostitutes to help the manager, but no enemies. there are buildings for challenge battles.  but punching bag barrels, units shop, vaguely general layout is same.  wish you remember exactly what u add  so I could credit u properly

Quote from: M
I [can't] remember specifics, but if you credit me with "stat balances and tweaks" that would be more than enough.  If I recall that's most of what I did.

Quote from: R
Well, I hope when ur bored u give [Gladiator Manager] a read. It's been a fun roleplaying game adaptation  Dwarf Fortress released a sprite version on steam. If you ever make an account on the forums, come say hi!  as a roleplaying game, I can expand the game a lot. Stuff like more training activities, plotting to escape slavery as an alternate wincon, and just the medium being what it is I can more vividly describe the arena and gladiators and go into more detail out of combat what they get up to.  [There] is one mystery still. Yours is the earliest copy of the map in that layout.  Gladiator RPG III looks vastly different. And other '4's are, well, [newer].  Thanks for being a good sport.

Quote from: M
Crazy, don't know how that happened...

To their credit, it seems it was a common practice to replace the previous version's credit with your own, and there's no reason to think that the most recent person before him contributed any more than MURELIOUS himself. Shout out to SSJ4_VEGETA_ACE and SUPER_DRAGONS, some of the contributors to 2 and III respectively.

While I'd love to track down Integer8 and interview them, find out the story behind some of the map's secrets and oddities, unfortunately, although quite fitting, it not likely to be possible. Integer8 is programming jargon. It's "An object holding two 32 bit properties". Because of the prevalence of this term, any usernames baring it would be virtually impossible to track down, and would have a low chance of actually being the same individual. There may be other interesting things to look into, but I believe that's where this trail ends. However bittersweet, I'm glade we can credit the author by the handle for which they wished to be known by.

If you are curious about these maps, I encourage you to purchase StarCraft: Remastered (https://starcraft.com/en-us/) and join the Trigger Happy (https://discord.gg/2FZZx6C3VS) discord. We are doing a marathon of this series right now, and also play many other masterfully and lovingly built scenarios. One about a Pokemon Trainer and her Pokemon, another about The Thing infiltrating a squad of marines that many would see as a predecessor to Among Us, one where it's dungeon bosses versus heroes, and some other classics from roughly 20 years ago.

These are really special. If you know what MOBAs are they started out as custom maps in StarCraft and Warcraft RTS games, it really took a lot of passion to unlock the limited builders but out of pure magic and force of will, they succeeded in making some great stuff. I'm glad to celibrate this obscure and niche side of gaming in my own way, and I look forward to sharing more of this world with you, after my break!
