Title: RoseHeart Presents: Forum Platoon v1.0.3.1 SPACE! - Game Thread

MAP KEY
Center doors are ARMORIES, the rest are AIRLOCKS. Arrowed tiles are TELEPORTERS.
Units from left to right(or top to bottom) are ENGINEER, SOLDIER, and FIREBAT.


Turns:
    • Please save all map changes in '.png' format for best quality.
    • Up to 4 players simultaneously. Choose an army color (distinct from white, black, red, and other armies) and claim an unowned (red) airlock by making the background your color. Joining only counts as one of your 2 moves.
    • Once per hour you can take a turn and perform 2 moves. Post "dibs". Then update the image with your actions and edit it into your post.
    • If you take longer than 15 minutes to do this, you can be skipped. (Same for joining players)
    • You can't take a turn twice in a row.
    • Your timer starts from the edit time of your last turn.
    • Units only move to adjacent spaces (up, down, left, right), and not diagonally. Units cannot move through other units or doors, or through walls and floors.
    • If the owner of an armory has no more airlocks or units, these doors become unowned.
    • If you were eliminated you can rejoin if there are any unowned (red) airlocks. Anyone can replace you before you get back!
    • If you eliminated a player, clear their pallet. Replace their units with the default red ones, clear their doodle pad, and make the background red. (They can easily copy everything back)

Special Rules:
    • Units may not be created until 1 hour after the 2nd player joins.
    • Capturing/disowning doors if they are behind floors or walls you don't own, is forbidden.
    • Units can't be created on the opposite side of a barrier as the door they came from. (Except your own)
    • If you spot an error from the last turn, feel free to correct it. If it would negativity effect them (like removing an action), 15 minutes is sufficient notice.

Engineer Moves:
    • Deploy up to 1 engineer per airlock you own, placing each on an empty space adjacent to a different one of your airlocks. When training engineers, you cannot increase your total army population(engineers, soldiers, and firebats) to more than 2 per airlock you own.
    • (once per unit) Choose an engineer that hasn't moved, you can move your engineer 1 space through a wall or floor.
    • (once per unit) Choose an engineer that hasn't moved. Build a wall in your army color. Your army can move through it. Do not build more walls than Airlocks you own.
    • (once per unit) Choose an engineer, change an adjacent enemy door into an unowned door.
    • (sacrifice unit) Choose an engineer, capture an adjacent unowned door. Remove your engineer.
    • (free action)(once per unit) Choose an engineer, destroy an adjacent unit or placed wall.
    • (replace unit) Choose an engineer who is adjacent to an armory you've captured, replace your engineer with either a soldier or firebat.

Soldier Moves:
    • Choose a soldier, move your soldier 1 space. If you had an adjacent soldier it can be moved to the 1st's former space, and if you had a 3rd soldier that was adjacent to the 2nd, it can be moved to its' former space, and so on.
    • (once per unit) Choose a soldier, change an adjacent enemy door into an unowned door.
    • (sacrifice unit) Choose a soldier, capture an adjacent unowned door. Remove your soldier.
    • (free action)(once per unit) Choose a soldier, destroy the first unit or enemy wall in a straight line to either the left or right. Hits your units and allies.
    • (replace unit) Choose a soldier who is adjacent to an armory you've captured, replace your soldier with either an engineer or firebat.

Firebat Moves:
    • Choose a firebat, move your soldier 1 space.
    • (sacrifice unit) Choose a firebat, capture an adjacent unowned door. Remove your firebat.
    • (free action)(once per unit) Choose a firebat, destroy all units and enemy walls on and between the adjacent 3 space to either the left or right. Hits your units and allies. Changes an enemy door into an unowned door.
    • (replace unit) Choose a firebat who is adjacent to an armory you've captured, replace your firebat with either an engineer or soldier.

Teleporter: When moving on a teleporter, move the unit to the opposite side of any other teleporter, but not the same one. A unit can't move after teleporting.

Unit Customization: Your army pallet can be edited. The wide box is also your private doodle pad. The ones in the map are shared(above planet). SFX and terrain damage are allowed, but either fix it in a second image or leave the game grid unchanged. Players may ignore/erase lingering effects when moving onto the tile.

(Right now "space" is the current theme)

Goal: Capture 5 Airlocks


Patch Notes:
1.0.3.1: You can't (re)join by claiming a door an enemy unit could disown next turn.
1.0.2.1: If the last person to take a turn also owns 3 or more airlocks, and no one takes a turn for 24 hours, they win.
1.0.1.1: Gunna just say a unit can't move after teleporting.
1.0.0.1: a. Going to clarify that you can attack yours and an enemy's walls with Engineers. Note: Soldier and FB weapons attack them aswell. b. Engineers' barrier movement may not be interpreted to let them attack on the other side of any barrier anymore.

Any balance changes will be announced here.

1. Added more specifics to unit abilities relating to 'enemy walls'. Engineers can't build floors.
2. Soldiers use the Tank's group move from MFB.

I’m gonna be real with you for a minute here chief.

You look like a jackass when you do things like quote people in your op then do exactly what they said you do. If you’re trying to do anything other than build animosity and start fights then you’re really bad at portraying that. If you can’t take legitimate criticisms and observations, and instead want to take quotes out of context and act like you’re dunking on someone then maybe you’re spending too much time at the computer and need to get some fresh air.

We may have our vast differences and disagreements, but at the very least I don’t let you dictate my actions or let you live rent-free in my brain. Find something better to do with your time.

Sorry you see it that way Paper. But while you and some others wish to demonize for ideas and opinions, I do think a lot of you and many others. There's no hostility to be found here.

I want to avoid stalemate so I was more generous with units than walls. I also didn't want them to be too big a focus of the game. So, "less about defensive positions and more about slowing down the advance of enemy soldiers" to put it one way.

We just need one more, but a1s is hosting something, so they may be too busy. I think if that's the case this is probably too niche for new people to drop in unfortunately, so I'll get around to making a more traditional H&H at some point.

Trying to understand the rules. A few questions, it is not clear to me how many actions you can take in a turn:

Why did the blue soldier never shoot anything?
How did the blue soldier transform into an engineer, was that a mistake?
Why did the green engineer move and capture the door instantly, when the yellow engineer didn't?
How did the first yellow engineer build a wall instantly when he had just entered the scene?

Trying to understand the rules. A few questions, it is not clear to me how many actions you can take in a turn:

There was nothing to shoot.
That was a mistake, yes- airlocks only spawn engineers. Armories (in the center) transform engineers into soldiers/firebats
You get 2 actions per turn. (one used to move, the other to capture)
Again- you get 2 moves. So one to spawn, one to build a wall.

Note that you can spawn one engineer per airlock, so on my next turn, I can spawn 2.

If I understand correctly, a soldier can't shoot through a wall, but can destroy a player's wall. Whereas a firebat can shoot through a wall, destroying it in the process.
Also, you can deploy an engineer as the second move.

p.s.: my questions about shooting / firing through walls were about Neutral (black) walls. I would assume then that a firebat can fire through a black wall, but a soldier can't? Sorry for the many questions.

So we know the penalty is payed, if someone does this to Quarque, add: Fast-claiming (48)

I retroactively changed the "take door action" into a "disown door" action instead, and will wait for King to reclaim the door. That seems more fair. It isn't clear that someone would get a chance to claim one of my doors this game otherwise.

So I want to take this line:

And add this claus:

Think of this like a petition, and all current players would need to agree. Otherwise the change is delayed until they do, or until the next game. You can make a counter-proposal. (You can also propose something unrelated.)

Reason: Not having this is diminishing the significance of the wall and floor layout from how strategic I had once envisioned it. This change helps with that, yet still keeps the wording short.

For shorthand I am calling this proposal:

I'm fine with that proposal as long as it isn't applied retroactively.

Roseheart, I think the current rules only allow you to build a maximum of two walls? If you'd like to change that rule as well it is fine with me, too, though.

I own 2 airlocks, so my current limit is 4 walls. I'm at 3/4, I can even build 1 more. Does that make sense?

Ok, sure. By the way, I totally forgot that the only unit that can move through a floor is the Engineer, so my firebat could not move to its current location. And it could not have fired that engineer.

I propose to resolve this by taking a turn now to move the firebat back to where it started and revive the dead engineer, as follows:

This would be a great idea and speed up the game. The problem with the current rules is that it is extremely difficult to promote an engineer to firebat/soldier, because your opponents can quickly disown the armory whenever you capture it.

Anyway, go get them Zultan!  :D

King Zultan, when you spawn a new engineer from an airlock, you can spawn one from every other airlock at the same time for free, until you are at the maximum number of units (2*airlocks=8 in your case).

You can have as many units as 2 times your airlocks..

Engineer Moves:

You can only move Engineers 1 space. I moved it back, erasing 1 of your moves as a penalty. I restored the removed unit, as Q pointed out was not necessary.

You moved the engineer two spaces in one turn, Roseheart added a new rule that forbids this.

Also pretty please, shoot with your firebat.. it would both kill an enemy and disown the armory in one shot and it does not even cost an action. You don't even have to do move the firebat to do this, you can do it for free besides anything else you do.

Moving is an action. You can take two actions in a turn. What is allowed and what is not?

Examples:

1. Is it allowed to move an engineer and then disown an enemy door with the same engineer in the same turn?
2. Is it allowed to spawn a new engineer and then move that new engineer in the same turn?
3. Is it allowed to move twice in the same turn with a soldier, or a firebat?

I *think* (and hope) that the answer to 1. and 2. is yes and 3. is no, but I can't find anything about this in the rules.

Unlike others, engineers' movement has the '(once per unit)' tag, that's how you know. Engis already have plenty of movement options...

I believe the game needs a further rule change. Building walls is currently almost useless, because enemy engineers ignore them completely and the two other units are rare and can shoot them down as a free action. At the same time, it is strange that engineers have no way to remove a wall

To improve this, I would propose (for next game, perhaps):

2. Any unit can spend an action to remove a wall (or floor), except if it is black (those are "hard walls").

That´s a rule change. What the rules currently say is something else:

This isn't a rule change, it's a clarification. (There was 0 chance my intention was for bullets to stop at everything else and go through walls. Also makes firebats redundant and inferior..)

Writing unambiguous rules is difficult, easy to overlook some detail that turns out to be important. But unfortunately you can´t rely on people just understanding your intentions.

Flamebats shoot straight through walls and Engineers can kill a unit behind a wall too, so I saw no reason to assume that soldiers would not. That's how the rule was written and it looked like a feature to me, not a loophole.

In my opinion it is the other way around. Firebats can take down multiple enemy units and walls and most importantly, they can disown doors from a distance, again ignoring walls.

But anyway, could you please edit the rules to clarify how this works then? And how about walls of your own color, can soldiers shoot through those?

No. They cannot. (It destroys them.) It can be inferred that since it "Hits your units and allies.", your walls are not an exception.

About Space Platoon, I´m neutral about this, though I think the map needs a teleporter to make it more fun, to have a little interaction between the East and West side of the map. Something like this:

Thinking about it again, I'd actually slightly prefer to start Space Platoon as a parallel thread and have everyone start from scratch, without transporting existing units.. if everyone else wants to transport their current units I'll going along with it.

Also, I think this would be an even better map. Putting the teleporters in the center for lots of interaction, with the armories in somewhat harder to reach locations..

I'll be flexible, but a smooth transition would be more fun imo. I know Z has spoken, but the alternative is to invent some other win mechanic, and again, I think it would be fun.

Speaking for myself, I don't have time or patience to participate in two versions, and since I am enforcing the rules I'd need to choose this one.

This is an interesting situation, where an airlock exit is blocked by a hostile unit. I've been wondering what happens in a case like this, is yellow allowed to spawn a new engineer from the southern airlock or not?

Ok guys, I really want move to the next game, so either way lets all agree to the evacuation minigame. If units dont carry over then they can be worth points:
50pt = Engineer
75pt = Soldier
100pt = Firebat

Engineers don't need to visit an armory, and soldiers reward multiples and have more movement perks than fbats. Hense the scoring.

Once all agree, units can still be converted, but no new units can be made (we'll say it's ok on your first turn of the evac only.)

I´d like to show that this game doesn´t end in a stalemate before we stop. We could do your first proposal? Play on for 50 moves and if there is still no winner at that point, the player with the most units wins?

In any case, you accidentally made three moves in your turns, Roseheart. One spawn and two moves with the firebat.. The logical fix would be to undo the spawn, is that ok?

Teleporter: (Once per unit) When moving on a teleporter, move the unit to the opposite side of any other teleporter, but not the same one.

Unit Customization: Your army pallet can be edited.

There are two slots to mirror a new unit type. This is just a placeholder.


Please take no more than 1 turn, until all players have, to allow them to process this update.

These changes make an indefinite stalemate a little harder, open up vertical play allowing more interactions between more players. Fan Art has been given a longer leash, something that is long overdue...

The station is yours, now mold it as you see fit. Choose 1:

A.Statue: ? (Default) Erected in your honor. It's in your team color, which you now have reserved.

B.Command: Keep the current map, and prevent progressive proposals from being passed until the end of the next match unless you approve.

C.Schematics: You get to make one conservative game change that skips voting. Can be multiple if closely connected.

D.Map: Design next map, or choose one designed by someone else. (Can also revisit a previous map.)

E.Intel: Replace the teleporter with a new map object, or add a new unit.

F.Boss: ? (Not Recommended)

Please PM your selection, if I do not receive a reply soon enough it may not apply to the next match. All game changes will need my approval.


I plan to host the next match on the 28th. In that time players may still participate in the OOC Thread (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=180332.0). Proposals will now accept votes from all players that participated this match, but switch to majority rules. Map will probably be similar(unless winner changes it). THIS THREAD IS NOW LOCKED.
