Title: Of Seals and Trumpets: Angel SG
Post by: chubby2man on April 16, 2022, 03:54:56 pm

It was a holy mountain you descended upon, one host to surely a dozen prophets and hundreds of burnt offerings. A place of reverence and reflection, a thousand thousand prayers, dreams, and sacrifices stretching back to when the first men huddled tight around a fire and hoped the dark would retreat, if even for a night.

You had to make a subtle entry. No pillar of light or storm of fire. The stars in the sky underwent a gentle realignment, a nod to the new Warden of Alesia.

That’s you.

You are an Angel, a servant of Good and the Most High God, Lord of 142, maybe 143 worlds depending on how the conquest of Serphos was going.

You were assigned to Alesia by the Council of Thrones, the authority just under that of the Lord himself. Your main directive was to foster as much Good as possible, and protect the world from demonic incursions.

Alesia was a Border world, meaning heaven and hell both possessed a claim. In a gentlemanly agreement both principalities agreed not to send hosts and legions and do outright battle over this world and it’s souls, ruining the world for both sides.

Instead, they send an Angel like you to represent the interests of Heaven. Work in the background and make the world a better place. Make sure that a Hell doesn’t take it over.

Track down the former warden who went rogue.

Anyways, no pillar of fire, but you arrived in  a gust of wind, carrying the scent of a incense that you found on a crusade on a far away world and fell in love with. A beam of sunlight may have also slipped past a cloud and illuminated the holy site you arrived at.

All suitably subtle still, you assure yourself.

Three holy men. . . Wait actually two holy men and one woman kneel before you. Their bodies practically radiate with Good, years spent in mediation and prayer leaving their very bones saturated with the energy.

“Oh High One, we call on you in our time of need. Darkness and woe overtake the earth, evil besieges us and rules over the hearts of our kings. We ask for your wisdom and mercy over our people. High One, we call on you in our time of need. . .”

They repeat this mantra, cracked lips and parched throats endlessly repeating. They can’t see your true form yet, as the sight of all the wings and your radiant form may very shock and kill them.

In front of the three saints lies the object of their entireties. It is a

A. A Sword. Wielded by a knight who defended the poor and the innocent, struck down defending the defenseless. You are a Destroyer, formed for holy war and defeat of evil.

B. A Staff. Carried by a prophet, who brought wisdom and life to all those he blessed. You are a Loremaster, master of the secret names of God.

C. A Harp. Played by a woman who never shrunk from the Truth in her songs, whose light breathed life into all who heard her. You are a Singer, a maker and shaper of stories.

And also, what is your name?

Traveler of Tales- Singer and Warden of Alesia

Current Good: 10

Good acts as a combo of Health and Power level. You naturally accrue Good over time, and can be gained from doing Good Works and by sacrifices.
Good can be used, in which case it returns after a chance to rest, or invested permanently.

3 Prophets currently in service.

You are the Traveler of Tales, a Singer of the hosts of Heaven. Six wings stretch from your back, a body of blinding light and impossible angles. A face of indescribable beauty (you asked) and hair of golden flame.

You were chosen for your deft hand at weaving together stories and events, a talent for picking the path of living things like they were actors in a play.

And so you were called to the Council of Thrones, and the Throne of Dominion gave you the Mandate of Heaven, your writ of power and responsibility over the world of Alesia.

Spoiler: The Mandate of Heaven (click to show/hide)

And the Throne of Laws handed you the belt of Seals, your limitations until the Time is right for them to broken and wrath poured out.

The harp lying in front of the three saints burned with a golden light. They froze, ceasing their prayers. Their eyes flicker from the burning harp to where you hung, invisible to the mortal eye.

You can see the shape of their stories now. Three doddering elders, minds alded by the sun. Three sages, each carrying a prophecy back to their homes. 3 prophets, bring Truth and an exposing flame back. Each a possibility given the right nudge.

Each a string that could be plucked.

However, you still have much to learn of this place, and these saints could tell you much of the local situation. You can tell that they have came by different routes from different places, the lilt and intonation of their prayers distinguishing them.

They have, through a conflux of fate and faith, called you forth and told you a tale, asking for aid with:

A. The Fall of the Northern Kingdoms . The great kingdoms of the north, beacons of knowledge and power, are beset on all sides by darkness and evil. Their fall seems almost certain, but what will survive the collapse?

B. The Dissolution of Empire .
Vultures pick apart the dying empire one bloody scrap at a time, as one venial emperor after another scramble to enrich themselves looting its corpse.  Can it remake itself, or will it have to be cleansed by fire?

C. Rise of the Priest Kings.
Cults of ancient gods have reawoken, and are demanding human sacrifices to sake their thirst. Fear and terror dominate the land underneath the knife, but who might rise to overthrow the old order?

You gaze out from the summit of the mountain.  Blue sky dotted with white, blazing sun overhead shining onto rolling hills of orchards and grass descend into rich valleys of rolling grain and barley. You can see several villages, built over generations. You can almost see the story of this place, the mountain sheltering those who came to it in their time of need. In turn, the people venerated the mountain. A cycle of peace and plenty stretching back gently.

You look at the three gathered before you, worn by their travels and the rigors of summoning an Angel before them. You allow a glimpse of your form to appear before them. They throw their faces on the ground before you, crying out in wonder. You gently raise them up.

Voice a gentle breeze, you ask them,

“Why have you called me?”

The woman, robes a dusty gray, face sun-cracked and worn, began.

“A darkness has fallen over the people. Old gods have come back, and ambitious kings and priests have sent thousands of men, women, and children to their alters to bleed and burn.”

The man on the right, gray hair windswept and long, continued.

“The empire was thrown out a dozen years ago. We thought that would lead to peace and plenty, but the great kings turned on each other and ravaged the land with war and sorcery.”

The last, stick thin and scalp bare, bowed his head.

“Oh Holy one, we searched through our scriptures and temples, looking for any way we could ask and beg for deliverance. Our people are dying, they have forgotten what it means to be good to one another. The lord of Aritiapo turns his gaze to here, and has no respect for the old ways. The people of the mountain cannot stand alone. We need your aid.”

You consider their words, and gently draw more from their minds. The Cenarian Empire came through these lands , the lands of the Nerhream, two hundred years ago, conquering and burning. A dozen years ago, the great Cities banded together and threw out the weakened empire with the aid of old gods and ancient sorceries. But such power does not go back into the bottle easily, and now the cities of Partia, Tyros, and Uran wage war across the fields and villages of Nerhream.

The mountain, Holy Ulast, sheltered several villages beneath its slopes. The lord of the nearby fortress Aritiapo,  a client of the City of Tyros, has been receiving increasing demands to collect sacrificial victims for the altars and gladiatorial games. He has been sending men into the villages to gather villagers to meet his quota.

Your wings shudder in anger, and the grip on your harp tightens. The land indeed is in need of a Warden to call it to order.

You survey the 3 saints, calling you forth in light of their lifetime of service. They could make for capable agents, but they have also willingly offered their very lives to you. Though you would have no need to take them in this case, you could take the accumulated Good they have accrued through their lives. This wouldn’t really harm them, but would hamper their abilities as your agents. In exchange you would gain a rather significant amount of Good energy for your current state.

Current “Good Energy”: 10

What do you do?

A- Harvest their Good to empower yourself further. Each has roughly 10 points of Good.

B- Leave them alone for now, you may get a better idea of how to use them later.

C- Bless them using their own reserves of Good. Blessings can modify their bodies and their souls, granting mystical powers or enhanced physical capabilities.

And of course, now you have to plan your next steps. The world awaits you, a raging beast pulling itself towards the edge of oblivion. It will take skill, cunning, and properly applied power. Already you can see the courses laid out before you, bodies in motion.

Threads pulled taut, waiting for Fate to pull and weave.

What Story calls to you?

A- Among the Ashes, a Hero is Found.

B- The Prodigal Child Returns.

C- The Hunt for a Strange Beast.

So having decided to bless the Priests, you now have to decide how to bless them.
Two obvious courses (at least at the start) present themselves. . .

A-The Sages: 5 Points to Learn, Contain, and Use Lesser Names of God. 2Points for Discerning eyes that can see otherworldly beings. 3 points in reserve for using Names of God.

B- The Prophets: 3 Points into granting them a captivating Charisma, 4 points for the ability to create and receive Prophecies, and 2 points for Endurance, that they may go for days without stopping their speaking.

C- Or something else? You can do a mix of the two above, or create your own here if you have a better idea in mind! A lot of things are possible, you can either ask what something might cost or just guess the cost in a build. I’ll let you know and use those examples to better build out the scale!

You reach out with three of your wings and brush their heads. As you do so you concentrate on the Good inside of their bodies.

While you wouldn’t describe the process as difficult, it did require you to focus. The 3 holy folk were exceptional candidates, having spent years of their life in a sense preparing for the Good coursing through their bodies.

To send a comparable amount of energy you are dealing with now through a person grabbed off the street would likely kill them. Good tends to. . purify those it courses through. Often fatally.

Reheara, born to fisherfolk. Kind and wise, she journeyed from the sea to the mount, and called the two others together.

Eliphan, wanderer of many roads. Joy and peace radiate from his smiling eyes.

Hassap, lonely priest of an old temple. He never held tightly to comfort or his belongings when others were in need.

To them, you gave the gift of the Prophets, to go out into the land and prepare it for your coming. Their words will ring with truth, and few men will be able to disregard them.

Their words will not be mere trifling things, either. They shall see visions of things past and yet to be, and their words will bear weight on fate to bend it to their will. Their gift for prophecy is no absolute, causing the impossible to pass. But it is a powerful gift to influence the future.

They rise beneath your eyes, Prophets blessed and burdened. It is not an easy life, but these three never asked for a life of ease, only to be and to do Good.

As you finish, you consider your own purpose. A powerful urge rises within your form, an ordering to your very core. You’ve heard of this feeling before from others, but never yourself.

A Directive, an order that seems echoes within and without you. Some say that it is a blend of your own desire and Good interacting inside and with the local conditions to form the eldritch dictates.

Others say it is the very will of God himself, or that of his council.

You’re not sure what you believe, you just know that it is a Bad Idea to ignore any Directives. Aside from possibly tearing your soul apart, Directives invariably lead to a net increase of Good, even if the methods can be completely incomprehensible, even to Angels.

There are even arguments about whether if it is the Directive telling an Angel how to cause the most increase in Good, or if the Good arises from the very act of completing a Directive.

(You know better than to get into those kind of debates, especially when you haven’t had first hand experience with them. )

Your First Directives:

Prime Directive: Find what happened to the Previous Warden.

Prime Directive: Choose

A- Destroy the Cities of Partia, Tyros, and Uran so Utterly that None may live there, and build a new City where Justice and Peace reign.

B- Extinguish the Priest-Kings and their Gods, so that None may raise Them again. Raise Gods of Mercy and Love above all others.

C-Forge a New Epic of Nerhream, of five Heroes banding together and defeating a Terrible Cataclysm. The Heroes must not survive their victory.

Sub-Directive: The Lord of Aritiapo must cease his raids and live in a cave on Holy Ulast for one month.

Discredit them, overthrow them and probably do some record altering, and throw in some God-crafting of your own! Course people might not be too eager to throw their power and history away. . .

C for me I think. I want some doomed heroes.

Wield the power of friendship! Create a band of heroes that will live on in history! Course shame that they won’t be able to see the world they made, but you know what they say about fighting monsters, dangers of absolute power and all that.

The village lying before you was nothing special. Mostly farmers working the surrounding fields, though shepherds and their families also sheltered here. It was nestled in a valley between two small hills, peaceful and idyllic. It was a good place, a happy village where people lived and loved, had squabbles and resolved them together.

Now it was so much ash and blood.

Bodies lie littered in the street, homes ruined by fire. It was the old and frail they killed, taking the young and strong. You drift above, a gentle breeze cutting through the scent of smoke and spilt blood, as your 3 prophets walk solemnly behind.

However, you spot a lone figure, lost and heartbroken. Your fingers idly strum at your harp as a song begins to take shape.

A- The Wanderer Returns.
Parents murdered, he fled to his Uncle in the Empire. There he learned, received an education on par with that of the Empire’s nobles, and drilled with legionaries and duelests. He could have had a position in the empire, but he never forgot the village where he came from, nor the girl who offered him kindness when he was orphaned. By way of adventure he made his way home, only to return to warm ashes.

B- A Slip of Fire.
She was scolded often for being too talkative, too inquisitive. For dreaming too large for a farmer’s daughter. She couldn’t help it, for her mind raced down paths undreamt of in this village, and her desires would not be satisfied here. Fiery and bold, she decided to make her own way in the world and slipped out during the night. It was only when she took a final look back at her home she heard the screams.

C.A Child of Destiny, awaiting a guiding hand.
An abandoned child blessed by fate and providence. Their potential is unlimited, but they will take time to grow into it.

D. Someone else?

B: A Slip of Fire

You approach her, little more than light and air in the physical world. She crouches in the ruins of her home, pack lying next to her abandoned. No bodies lay beside her, only broken furniture and ash.

She is in a bit of a daze, mind whirling with thoughts and plans. Doubt, guilt, and fear all roil and turn in her mind. Her spirit is strong, though, and you see a resolve to do something harden inside her.

You can see the possibilities spin out from her choice. In some she ends up dead, others a slave. In some she turns to savagery to defeat her foes, in others she takes a first few trembling steps into learning magic. Without the benefit of a proper teacher, her natural talents only take her so far.

You frown to yourself. The stories are mostly gloomy, though in a few she finds happiness for a time setting her revenge behind her and settling down.

You can do something about that.

However, you need to think about how to handle this. There is no prohibition against revealing yourself, but it is discouraged. Widespread word of angelic activity would draw devils like flies to honey.
However, revealing yourself to one girl is unlikely to attract that much attention. A choice must be made regardless.

You decide to:
A-Speak to her.

B-Send a prophet to speak to her.

C-Don’t say anything, but you will keep a close eye on her.

D- Something else?

B- Prophets

Reheara the Prophet you call forward, who acknowledges your summon with a graceful nod. She carefully picks her way through the ruins, countenance sorrowful.

The girl leaps up at the prophets approach, scrambling for a knife she left on the ground.

Reheara gives the girl a smile,
“Peace, Selia, I mean you no harm.” She reassures.

She starts and lowers her knife. Her brown eyes widen, reddened by tears and hair disheveled.

“How do you know my name?” Selia asks, struggling to recognize the woman.

Reheara gives a slight shrug.
“I know many things.”

Selia eyes tighten.
“Do you know where my brother is? Where my parents are?” She challenges.

Reheara returns a look full of compassion, Selia looks away. The old prophet brushes her hand along the ground and gazed at the sky.
“They are alive, taken by the Lord of Aritiapo. They will be held in the fortress for the next three weeks, and then taken by caravan to the city of Tyros. And there. . .”  The words trail off and the implication is left unsaid.

Sacrificial alter or gladiatorial games, that is to be their fate.

Selia seems to withdraw into herself. Against the power of lords and gods she seemed so small and frail. But again, you could see the resolve harden within her. A dauntless desire to do good, to be better.

You couldn’t help but admire it.

You settle around them, brush them both a wingtip, radiating peace. Of course Selia couldn’t see you, but Reheara smiled. She looked at the girl.

“Though the night is dark, the light will come. The heavens will aid us. We will save your family, together. ” She extended her hand.

Selia looked at her warily.
“You’ll help me? What can we do?”

Reheara reveals teeth and her eyes harden.
“Oh child, we are but the instrument of vengeance for the heavens. They shall weep at the judgement we will bring.”

Selia has a lot of potential, but should be pushed down a path to further develop her power.

-The Firebrand. Using her charisma, she will gather an army of the people together, and aided by the prophets will guide them to improbable military victories.

-The Moonlit Blade. Covered in shadows, she strikes in the dead of night at the evil and villainous and breaking the chains of the oppressed.

-The Sorceress of the Mountain. Wielding ancient secrets, she brings fire and ruin upon those who would oppress her people.

- Something else?
