Title: How do you deal with noble vampire visitors?
Post by: Hyperlynx on July 26, 2022, 07:27:33 pm
I've recently come back to Dwarf Fortress after a hiatus of several years. My fort's going great, except for the fact that I've just had a vampire as a guest, and after getting rid of them I now have another one.

I've identified that the vampire isn't any of my dwarves, so it must be a visitor. But if I order the military to kill the two new nobles that arrived just before the first vampire victim, I get a loyalty cascade bug.

The last vampire I was finally able to identify by savescumming, after vetting all my recent migrants and comparing *all* my dwarves' names with what's reported in Dwarf Therapist. The same person was killed each time I restored my save. So I stationed the military at their bedroom. The Duke Consort then arrived, turned into a vampire, and murdered them. Annoyingly the military didn't attack of their own accord and I had to order the attack myself...

I don't know why that didn't cause a loyalty cascade while killing these two new nobles does. Unless maybe it's because one of them isn't a vampire?...

Anyway, I'm looking for advice for A: identifying vampires from your guests *before* they kill people, and B: disposing of them, since being non-citizens I can't just order them to stand somewhere they'll have an unfortunate accident.

In my understanding the only way to prevent such things is to prevent all visitors in general.

From my experience it's best to remove vampires completely from the game otherwise you spend too much time trying to find a stealthy murderer who's killing your dwarves as compared to enjoying the rest of the game.
Another idea would be if there's a way to set a fixed number of vampires in the world such as 10... then I wouldn't mind solving the mystery to permanently destroy a vampire or use the vampire as a caged guard.   I wonder how that could be done?
