Maybe this is a stupid question and the answer is glaringly obvious, but...
Every time I descend into a system of Caves, I just *cannot* get back out again. I don't mean I die at the hands of the inhabitants (although that does happen a lot), I mean I cannot find a way to leave the caves. Once I starved to death after killing all the evil denizens - with, of course, the help of my faithful spear-fodder - because I simply couldn't find a way out. There's that grey upwards pointing triangle, but apparently that doesn't count as stairs up, and looking at it reveals that apparently it's not noteworthy. Can someone help me out here?
-
If you want to leave a cave, find that grey arrow that points upwards, and there should be a kind of whiteish block above it. Walk upward, and you should be able to get out.
-
Yeah just imagine those triangles as a hole you can climb up or down through.
-
Huh. That does make a certain kind of sense. Thanks for the help :D

Although they can frequently be obscured by corpses, or by fog of war which notes where someone previously was.
-
...and apparently leather pants are far more deadly than I would have thought. I managed to destroy four zombies simply by throwing a set of leather pants that I'd wrested from an evil peasant.
...this game is like a fountain of humorous amusement.
-
I wonder if it matters what kind of animal the pants were made out of... like... the bear leather pants are like GRRRR and the cheetah leather pants are like zzoooooommmm and stuff. It's like powerups and stats and stuff. You're like a druid sorta, but the animal is dead.
-
From memory, they were... badger leather? Does that sound right? I guess badgers don't like the undead. For some reason, the pants were *much* more effective than just throwing rocks. I guess zombies have a phobia of pants?

I love the way Toady asks these questions, as if he doesn't know the answer. (Although, the game is so massive that forgetting game mechanics would be understandable...)
-
Toady, does the animal type of leather affect its attributes in any way?
-
Just the price. And if it's made out of dragon I don't think it burns.
-
But stuff doesn't burn... yet... does it?
-
Hehe. Toady makes it sound like things do burn, but things from dragons dont. Ive never faced a dragon before so Im not sure if my clothes will be burned up or not.

The last time I faced a dragon, I don't think it mattered whether my pants were fireproof or not.

Yeah. By that time, they were already so soaked that even the fire had no effect.

Oh my god.. I finally got access to the internet after a month, decided to read a topic or two of these, and I'm already pretty much rolling on the floor laughing.. You guys are great, I can't believe how I made it through the month without internet access.
