Title: Can fire be used in combat (Adventure Mod)?
Post by: callisto8413 on October 16, 2022, 08:37:31 pm
In my last adventure me, and my elephant, were murdered by a ettin.

I realized afterwards, one, I should have mounted my elephant as soon as we entered the damn cave.  But also I was wondering - could I have started campfires and forced the Ettin to walk through the flames and hurt itself as it came at me?

I don't think so.

I just checked, and trying to make a campfire in a cave gav me "You cannot build a fire until you leave this site." (Though, that was a kobold cave and they hav a site group, a cave being used as a lair might be different.) And since you were in a cave there wasn't any plant life to lite on fire.

Now, if there were plant life to ignite, you could ignite the plants in the tile the Ettin was in, but they would prioritize moving off that tile and probably succeed in doing so before they took damage for the fire. (If they even ever would.)

I did this in the caverns with the GCS I talked about in this bug report (https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=11299). It would move off the fire as soon as it could and then wouldn't enter the burning tiles.

In the days gone by when Bogeyman attacks were common, surrounding yourself in campfires was a tactic to defend against them since the ones that couldn't fly would not enter the campfire tiles.

Interesting.  Thank you.  It suggests it could be used under certain coditions.  But likely not in caves or on sites.
