Title: Merchants telling me to look for Merchants
Post by: Master BOB on April 20, 2007, 03:34:00 am
I started to play Adventure mode, or at least tried to (and died multiple times). After finally finding out the most relevant stuff, I managed to find a merchant. But he doesn't trade and instead tells me that i better look for a merchant. I can't believe it's supposed to be like that, or is it?
I used the search for information about that, but didn't find any posts about that problem (but helped me in some other cases). They don't even have stuff lying around in their rooms, as written here in the forum.

Maybe you are talking to them while they are not at their shop?

Since I can't find any room with stuff on the earth, I really don't know whether they are in their shop or not. I'm happy if I find them at all. I searched three cities for about 3-4 hours and was only able to meet two merchants, but no "romm with stuff on earth".

Here's a picture of a shop:

There was no room like that, not even in the dwarven capital. Only small and narrow rooms and corridors. Merchants look like Masons (might be different with other races). Hm, let's see if I can get a screenshot...

Here we go:

Their position seems to vary, but maybe only at sunrise/sunset. But no matter how long I search, there is definitely not such a room (at least inside the 4 cities I was searching - including the dwarven capital). Everything looks more or less like on the first picture.

I play verion 0.23.130.23a (if that matters).
And don't wonder about the looking of my char, it's a Warhammer-like slayer and wears no armor except trousers.

I don't think dwarves have shops in adventure mode right now.

Only humans? That means that I have almost no chance to play an elven Wardancer or dwarven Slayer   :(.

If you play as a dwarf, you can grab armor and stuff from your abandoned/destroyed fortresses.

I already took two steel axes to become a true demonslayer   :D. Unfortunately there's no difference between this and the use of weapon+shield (yet, I hope that will be implemented so that I have even more speed). But the good speed (no armor at all) and the fact that I always have a ready second weapon if the first one gets stuck/lost isn't bad. Great work for a 0.23 alpha version!
Any suggestions how I can become faster? I slayed some gremlins at my fortress and became "extremely strong" (well, these bastards were/are really strong opponents, I must admit - no chance that I can ever pass my entrance hall). Now I'd like to train some speed. Not that 1000 from the beginning is bad, but I'm pretty sure it can be trained somehow.
And is there any system in how the races are spread on the map? You know, not that I walk west all the time just to find out that there are only kobold archers there   ;). Sooner or later I'd like to sell/buy something.

Stat-ups are random and are triggered by grinding up a skill.

Actually, stat ups are related to the total amount of experience your dwarf has. Its on the wiki...  here

do lots (and lots and lots and lots) of sneaking. then find a ruin and strangle zombies till your arms fall off (figuratively speaking.)  :)

The whole grind-up thing has never struck me as particularly entertaining.  Far more fun to die a horrible death with five zombies tearing your limbs off than it is to waltz around with no challenge.  Besides, if you earn your stat-ups in battle, it feels that much more rewarding when you can one-shot titans. =)

What is sneaking good for? I play a dwarven slayer. Did you ever see a slayer sneak? Or throw rocks?

I fought instead of crouching, and I bet I had alot more fun than you. Sure, a pierced lung, damaged kidney, arrows in leg and hand, cut ear,  and a scar over the eye aren't easy to handle, but hey, i play a slayer after all! I'll fight even if I have to crouch, and if one axe got lost, I'll use the other one, or the hands if neccessary. Death is the only option - the enemies one or mine is the question.

(Note for those who don't know: slayers are dwarves who lost their honor for some reason. They leave their people, wandering around, seeking death to regain honor, and therefor fighting any enemy they see, even if that means fighting a dragon. Thats the reason why slayers are usually feared enemies. Only the best of them survive (they can't die willingly, since that's not honourable), so the one you're approaching would be a tough one. Slayers don't use any armor, but axes in any variation and are completely fearless (since they seek death)

Watch this little video if you want to get an impression of what I'm talking about: WAR
Sorry for the huge picture, don't know how to set the shown size).

Oh yeah?

Try being a naked elf that only gouges out eyes and strangles to death.

The only more or less nakes elves I know are wardancers. And I never heard of elves strangling anyone. They'd rather shoot or - in case of wardancers - strike with a blade (or more than one).
What I'm talking about is style. I know that it's different for everyone, but for me sneaking dwarves and strangling elves have no style. Vice versa is my advice.
