Has anyone else noticed that your adventurer will go into a martial trance when fighting? According to the wiki, it only happens when you're fighting more than one enemy, but I've fought 2+ enemies before without it kicking in. Anyway, my real question is, what does it do? The wiki also says it improves focus, but what does that mean? Your hits do more damage? You hit more often? You do more critial hits? Anyone noticed any difference when fighting in a martial trance and when not?

You have to be a dwarf. It improves all kinds of combat rolls and modifiers (but no direct damage bonus -- 'enraged' does that).

Ah! I see now. Thanks!

Oh! I guess that frogman messed with the wrong enraged cat. Chunks everywhere!

Just one swordman in my fort killed about 6-8 frogman without taking a scratch, while standing in the bridge at the cave river

You must custom-name him "Horatius" now.

HOLY CRAP. Good reference!
...Man, I am SO modding Dwarf Fortress into a Roman roguelike when it gets to 1.0.0. Now I have to play Rome: Total War.
On topic again, are you sure only dwarves can enter martial trances? And if so, why?

So what does that make my guy who did something similar to antmen, saving the life of one of his countrymen?

Are you asking Toady One if he's sure only dwarves can go into martial trances and to reveal the code as proof? :p

I would imagine that "trance-ability" is in the raw files. Just need to find the tag that is associated with it, and then use your prefered method of word searching large volumes of text.
(Still, I think he was more asking "What is the reason that only Dwarves can trance?" I would imagine that it is one of those uniquely Dwarven attributes, like how alcohol makes them productive, or how losing one item from a Dwarf's 173 masterpiece collection will send him into an murderous frenzy.)

Im pretty sure you can make any creature able to go into a trance as long as you add the tag [TRANCES] to the creature_standard.txt file.

...I didn't see the name...Sorry...

Dwarfs can go into Kung Fu mode aka Trance..so don't mess with Dwarf Lee.
