Title: how to become a demon slayer?
Post by: Master BOB on April 28, 2007, 05:32:00 am
I wandered around the map, killed undeads, greenskins, wilds and everything else that attacked me. Now I can't find any suitable enemies, so I'm still only a troll slayer. I want to become a demon slayer, so where can I find dragons, demons and other "real" enemies?

Go to the capital cities and ask about a quest from the dude in the fort.
These are the big quests.

Though demons are only available in too-deeped dwarf fortresses.

I beat the main demon.. once.  It was a very long and very cheap victory.  I had a ring shaped loop of hallways and rooms and simply ran away from it while throwing my legendary rocks.  They slowly bruised him a little or something, then I found some adamantine ore laying around and threw it at the demon and I don't know if adamantine just makes really good throwing rocks or what, but he went down pretty hard.

That wasn't adamantine, it was kryptonite!

Heh. Yeah, the one time I fought the demon it was similarly underwhelming. I'd built up my adamantine industry outside the fortress in regular non-magma forges so that it could be accessed by adventurers more easily. I'd got a full set of adamantine armour, an axe and a serrated adamantine disc, for throwing at things. Anyway, I spot the demon and throw the disc immediately, hoping to soften him up.

"The spinning adamantine disc hits the demon, the demon's lower body goes flying!"

Stupid crappy demon.

The main demon needs a buff, but too bad I cant find him in my most recent too-deeped fortress (of which happened last night)

you all know where creature_standard.txt is.  buff him up.  and maybe make him fly so he doesnt fall in the chasm so much.

By buff, I mean already-set shit and some new tags, like [THROWCATCHER], and and actually working [THROWER] tag.

Throw a serrated adamantine disk at him? He'll catch it and throw it right back at you.

God, that would be a cool feature... but maybe it could be made into a function of Throwing skill as well, so skillful human throwers could also catch things.

(I'm reminded of Casino Royale where Bond catches the gun and throws it back, thwacking him right between the eyes.)

Adamantium DISK? holy cheesits batman. You do realize that adamantium has triple the damage of iron?   :D

No wonder he went down hard, you should go back with a ball on a chain and see how far he flies,.

Triple? Are you sure? Last time I checked the wiki I could of sworn it was like 500% damage. Or something.

Either way...

Yeah.  500% of basic iron.  Basic steel is 133%.  Note that this is BASIC stuff.  Masterwork steel is 266% of basic iron.  Masterwork adamantine?  1000% of basic iron.  Now, masterwork adamantine is hard to come by, but you rarely get plain basic adamantine anyway.  You at least get fine, or whatever, which still adds a significant amount of damage.  Significant.

code:

XX..###.X
XX.####.X
XX####..X
..====..XXXXXXXX
..####.@........ --> to forges and a fireball throwing fireman

Was it an artifact?  You should be able to find any lost artifact in the fort it was lost in...  supposedly.

edit:  or was that the inflate error sword...

Ah, one adventurer of mine slayed the end game demon! Trained him up to legendary thrower and sent him to my dead fort. Walked around and found a copper ballista bolt loaded into my entrance ballista. Naturally I pick it up and begin searching for that adamantine armor and battle axe. Suddenly... the demon appears! I hurl the ballista bolt with one mighty throw and take off one of its legs. I then proceed to beat it with my iron axe and kill it. As I'm picking up some adamantine boots...

the game crashes.

Oh, that bites. I hear you get an inflate error if you don't save and quit properly, so I've started taking no chances at all! I back up everytime an adventurer of note dies, if I have a long living one, every few hours of play. In Dwarf Fortress, after every major set of events I don't care to lose.

I back up my saves with 7zip. Works well, actually. You zip and compress the save file and pack it away. Put a date on it, too.
