My top favorite has to be the whip though. I had the fortune of seeing a masterwork iron whip in a shop once and i snapped it up. Never looked back. THWACK TWHACK THWACK it works on everything. Inflicts HUGE amounts of pain, nixes those organs with ease. Near the end with ultra mighty i was cutting off limbs with it. WHips are defenitly NOT good to start off with, hammers are the best, never get stuck and if your lucky youll start with a maul.
That character basically became a god with 4 layers of chest armour and iron everything. plus the 3 masterwork loincloths :D
So now im starting again as another human, this time with swords.
Whao combat is so much different. Now i have to worry about unjamming my weapon and those random decapitations are great, hammers cripple well but watching limbs fly is more fun
"Haayyyuuuken!"
Howly crap, it was DEVASTATING, anything it hit would be lopped off. Elite bowman? no problem! FLING, cuts him in half! Even worked on ettins too. Never tried it on a dragon though.
Throwing damage obviously depends on what you throw. But what are the exact factors i wonder. Weight is probably an issue, damage type is accounted for and such.

F=ma (or f=MA or some combination, I ferget my fizzicks, it's been a long long time.)
Yup, Force = mass x acceleration. I presume DF assumes things come to a halt from collisions in 0 seconds. Acceleration = change in speed/time to change, so when things stop instantaneously acceleration is infinite. This in turn would make the force of impact infinite, no matter what you throw. Game of catch anyone?

Im currently beating on this lion that ambushed me, stopped playing for a moment to type.
Anyhow, its a wreck... ive cut off all 4 legs and the tail, all the organs and the spine have heavy damage, and this thing is still clinging to life, hasnt even given in to pain yet!
Okay lets see what happens when i hit it again.
... ouch cleaved in 2, thats one dead lion ^ ^
Of course, there is also still an issue with ranged weapons in terms of the rate at which they can be fired (about one shot per step??? uh... way too fast!).
code:[ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_BOLTS]
[NAME:bolt:bolts]
[CLASS:BOLT]
[DAMAGE:15:PIERCE][ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_ARROWS]
[NAME:arrow:arrows]
[CLASS:ARROW]
[DAMAGE:10:PIERCE][ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_BLOWDARTS]
[NAME:blowdart:blowdarts]
[CLASS:BLOWDART]
[DAMAGE:5:PIERCE]

And I went on to exterminate the town that way but once someone was stuck to a wall beside a tree so i burnt the tree!

Haaaaadoken!
I have played only a little in adventure mode. I started with a female swordsman but once she was quite good with the sword, I tried out a warhammer.
Now, I am back to the sword (or rather scimitar, still the one she started with), because I like all the stuff flying around. And among the useless kills (those without even a loincloth, for crying out loud), I have become to love antmen. So much stuff flying around :) :) :) :) :)
So, swords it is for me. (Not thrown, of course, but rather used for hacking and slicing)
Deathworks
Sort of like improvising as I go along.
And if you use swords for hacking pieces off, why not use an axe? They're better at it.
I then start all adventurers in the same town next to the fort, and immediately arm them with X1 Steel spike, X4 iron spear, and extra armor. Also booze and plump helmets to supplement my Xbear meatX.
I love spears, I love pikes...And throwing spears isn't as exploit-y either.
If I make an adventurer storage house I typically stock it with large serrated disk blades for throwing instead. They kinda make sense for throwing and are strong even if all ya have handy is glass.

Plus, they cause lots and lots of pain and at high levels are just as deadly as any other weapon.
Though one has to wonder how hearts get pierced by a whip...

How the hell do the new guys manage to dig up old threads like this? Are they naturally drawn towards the topics that are far back in the archives?
Now it's telling me that this topic was started today! What gives?
The AI emerging in the forums is playing mind games with us...

Forums are a funny place. A member will make a new topic and he'll get told to use the search feature, the topic has already been discussed. A member will use the search function and post and he'll be told that he shouldn't be posting in old posts. :p
But there really is an art to finding out whether or not to post a reply or a new thread... You have to strike the balance juuust right, in order to cover all your bases.

Title: Monstrous Wolf
Am I a part of this 'senority'?
I don't honestly think that any sort of seniority should/would affect how we are allowed to behave. I was just making a comment on how after a while, forumgoers become an integrated group who tells off new folks when they make a slip-up.

Talking about favorite weapons, I am happy that I finally found a store that sold interesting swords - thus far, I either saw two-handed swords or short swords and I really wanted a replacement for my scimitar. Now, I have a nice long sword.
And it is really nice to see cougars cloven asunder and propelled about one screen away by the blow :) :)
(Even with the scimitar, I recently had a tigerman who nearly did the black knight number for me. I think he still had one leg, but the other arms and legs ...)

and carrying seven of them.
and throwing six of them.
Or if you're particularly cruel:
1. Grab right upper arm with left lower arm.
2. Take-down via right upper arm with left lower arm.
3. Lock right upper arm with left lower arm.
4. Grab left lower arm with iron shield.
5. Grab right upper leg with left lower leg.
6. Lock right upper leg with left lower leg.
7. Grab left upper leg with right lower leg.
8. Lock left upper leg with right lower leg.
9. Grab head with right hand.
10. Pinch nose with right hand.
11. Gouge left eye with right hand.
12. Gouge right eye with right hand.
13. Attack enemy with stack of steel iron arrow(11).
14. Stabbity stab stab stab.
^ And the above is why I become a legendary wrestler in adventurer mode in minutes.
edit: I'm not particularly sure if arrows get lodged since whenever I attack with arrows, it skips to step 5.

Thrown halberds seem to have a higher-than-average propensity for scoring headshots. I can now pile up heads like cannonballs after all the decapitations.
Either that, or I managed to find a magical vorpal halberd!

Aaaanywho. In regards to throwing weapons, is the throwing damage the same as the weapon's damage or is it just a fraction of it? Related to throw skill?
I'm positive the objects damage numbers influence the damage when it hits but is the damage reduced? Increased? What?
And do heavier things with no damage numbers do more damage than lighter things? Say if I threw a fly and a statue, would they do the same damage or would the statue do more? These are the mysteries that keep me awake at night, when I need to go to sleep so that Smash Bros. seems to get here sooner.

I would assume from experience that weight determines the knockback of the thrown item. So... a thrown statue would give you the "the human is sent flying by the force of the blow" or related messages more often.
Since I was trained as a swordsdwarf, I switched to the masterwork short sword and reserved the spear (and the 500 adamantine coins, heh heh) for distance work. The sword has a tendency to overkill anything I meet. It doesn't *always* kill *immediately* with the first shot, but it usually does.
Recently, however, I "bought" a basic craftelfship alder short sword from an elven "merchant". (Read: stole from a guard). It's now my favourite, since it actually allows me to hit things repeatedly, thus increasing my sword skill quickly.
As an aside the rest of the elves actually drew blood! Couple of pine arrows in the hand. That's the first time I've been hit with this adventurer, and he's been through dozens of cyclopes/minotaurs/trolls/ettins and hundreds of ---men. (ant, rat, bat, trogs, etc.) I've taken out a handful of elite gobbo bowmen, but I was always careful to sneak close and spear them.
I'm currently on a quest to find a bronze colossus, but he's in a HUGE cave system, and so far I've only found caveswallowmen, ratmen, antmen, trogs, naked mole dogs, rats, goats and the like.
I want to wrestle him :)
Oh - I haven't tried it out, but I *did* make two adamantine/birch ballista ammo. I figure they ought to do good throwing damage. Didn't find them on my first visit to my fort, and I got spooked by that demon.
Fear the were-carp.
I made a masterwork adamantine short sword, spear, mace, and crossbow. All in all, I like the sword best. It kills 90% of the time on the first hit, by slicing the target in half. If it doesn't do a fatal hit, it still slices some limb off. It tends to send the enemy flying too (usually when it chops them in half).
I killed the goblins' demon god with it: http://www.screencast.com/t/5Xo6obd6jyz
He gave me a yellow finger (badly burnt, from a fireball) and some sprains and minor burns (brown) from the same fireball. He only hit me with one before he got sliced in half and sent flying 20 spaces into a tree.
I also killed a bronze colossus (twice): http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-434-killingcolossuswithanadventurer1 http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-435-killingcolossuswithanadventurer2
I've kind of run out of things to do with him, though - it was a tiny world, so there was only one goblin fort, two human towns, a dwarf city, and I don't think there are any elves.
P.S. Your colossus probably isn't in the caves at all. The first time mine was standing outside around 30 squares away from the cave entrance. The second time he was nowhere nearby, but eventually going to 'Creature' and wandering around in increasingly large circles resulted in me finding him.
P.P.S. I severed one of the colossus' limbs in the second movie with a thrown masterwork adamantine crossbow.

When we met, I dropped my sword and shield, and wrestled him until I'd broken everything except one shoulder, which I'd crippled.
Sensing that throttling a non-breathing creature was getting me nowhere, I bludgeoned him to death with the alder sword. It wound up taking off a leg before I was done.
Now one of my favourite throwing weapons is a masterwork bronze statue...
