Title: Add folders to the 'work orders' panel, let us save folders.
Post by: blizzerd on January 16, 2023, 10:12:30 am
This will allow us to orderly sort work orders into their respective industries and so forth.

ATM its a long list that often accrues duplicates and isnt that transparent. Also shifting the priority of work orders is tedious, lets say im producing steel armour sets, but see the work rarely gets done due to othert tasks using the smithy taking priority, it would be quite a hassle to move them all up click by click. Adding them to a folder with the name 'Steel armour sets', that we can move up or down as a folder between folders should make it far more beneficial.

I feel we should also be able to save and load these folder sets, how often im just tediously doing the same order lists with conditions over and over is plain annoying imo.

I would also like to state that this could allow conditions that apply to folders of work orders? Might be handy!

I love where you are going with this, and think you could go one step further: a tab for each type of workshop (or at least a tab for each industry such as textile, animal products, metal, etc), and probably one that is combined for new people to look at when first learning about work orders. This way there is no need to have custom folders that are going to be different for every person. I would also love a button that just adds all necessary reagents as conditions to all WO in that tab, and perhaps a setting for a fuel threshold on the furnace and metal tabs. Optimally, it could be that each WO checks that there are enough of the specified reagents for each currently approved WO in that tab plus the amount needed by the WO being checked. Some cancellation spam would still occur for some resources (for example, making mechanisms is probably not going to be checked by the masonry tab or the crafts tab), but it would significantly reduce it.

Too bad it's only on Steam. I'm not sure what's different.

Personally, I'd just like to see better search, plus standardization of workshops. "Manufacture bed" is functionally equivalent to "Brew fruit" or "Cook biscuit", yet the .47 treats them as if they are different. There's really no reason you couldn't copy your standing order for tables, paste it, substitute meat for table, and chicken for pearwood. If the table doesn't specify material, fine, the butcher wouldn't be any more picky so long as it was a cookable meat.

I think could be handled with tabs, just like how you can tab through different items/creatures/structures if they are all located on the same tile. Basically the improvements you guys just described, but applied to the default UI instead of through custom folders.

By default the work order list would display everything but sort orders by industry. So for instance Farming tasks, Crafting tasks, Metalworking tasks, Carpentry tasks and so on would be grouped up with each other. Then if you want to jump to something specific you could select a tab for that industry which hides all of the other entries and only displays the category you want.

You could still have custom folders in addition to this for people who want very specific things.

Too bad what is only on Steam?
Latest version of Dwarf Fortress has been released for free here since 50.04. It uses the new work orders system, same as Steam. Has nothing to do with the premium graphics and music set that Steam is selling.

Thanks. Someone just pointed that out a couple hours ago. I had come back to DF early December when it hit Steam, and the most latest at that time was .47. Did not realize there was a release a week or so later.
