Title: Tower of Makhios - I Lost Count of the Turns (8/8, waitlist open)
Post by: Rethi-Eli on May 03, 2023, 12:53:27 pm
The Tower of Makhios

”The Tower is older than memory itself - that is what we have been told. ‘The Tower came first,’ the clergy of that place say, ‘and the city after.’ I do not care old and venerable the place is, however; the shadow it casts over the soul is greater than even that cast by its awesome height. The place reeks of greed, and of sorrow, and of death. Do not be dazzled by those that return... be afear'd by those that do not, for they are doubtless far more numerous.”

-Brüder Johannes Antoninus, Abbot of Grelitz, 988

In the Year 1022, the Tower of Makhios, an enigmatic monument of a past age, stands yet enduring at the mouth of the Gulf of Selenopolis, dwarfing even the tallest man-made structures of the city. It is a holy site, administered by priests of Makhios, God of Battle. Some say that the Tower is the haft of the bloodthirsty deity's spear, plunged into the land, while others say it is the first of his temples, built in the spot where he was born out of his slain father's blood.

While the Tower's origin is shrouded in mystery, its contents draw great champions and unproven warriors from all corners of the world, and tales of the riches within have spread to even the most remote hamlets. The Tower functions on a simple principle; those who enter are free to loot as they please, and those who manage to leave sometimes do so with a fabulous amount of wealth in tow. Swords and armor of the finest make, crowns and scepters beset with sparkling gemstones, and the hides of exotic beasts have all been brought triumphantly from the Tower, yet not all gifts within are material: unnatural vitality, striking beauty, and even the ability to work magic have been bestowed upon the most fortunate.

These treasures come at a cost, even to those who survive unscathed: much of one's memory of their time within the Tower is quickly taken from them should they leave its threshold. The priests say that this is a blessing of Makhios; a warrior who forgets their foes so too forgets their fears, and fear is the bane of the warrior. Sparse fragments of these memories may return, briefly beheld in dreams - or nightmares - but they are all that survive the Tower's overwhelming magic.

interesting.
I'll likely be making a character sheet in a bit. lil busy atm.

could you tell us a bit more about the world? does the world outside the tower have monsters? non-human civilizations?
what is the tech level of the world outside the tower? are people just beginning to experiment with matchlocks? do people know how to make steel reliably?
arcane and arcana seem to be part of the world, how well is it understood? are there research facilities for it?
how literate is the populace? are there good roads between cities or are people going to have traveled cross-country to reach the tower? what type of government are we living under?
you said our goal is roughly 10,000 Crowns plus for a Tower raid, how much money is that? a year's salary? a dragon's hoard? a day's stay at an inn?

no need to answer all of this, I'm just trying to decide on character background and want to feel out what the setting is like and what kind of character I could bring.

so that you know, if the option is available I'm quite likely to play a non-human character, but it looks like your game isn't designed for that and I don't want to break anything.

Hello! I'm more than happy to answer your questions.

I did not do too much speculation into the nature of the world outside, but I did not initially imagine non-human civilized races as being a part of it. That being said, this is because I didn't imagine much of it at all - if you wish to play an elf, a troll, a lizard person, or anything in between or beyond, that is totally fine - that being said, your character will have the same perks and stats available to them regardless of their race.

Both the technology and extant cultures of the world are roughly cognate with the 15th century of our own, although anachronisms are certainly welcome - if you want your character to be a Greek-style hoplite or a Viking-esque marauder, this is absolutely fine as well. Early firearms, while present, are unwieldy and far from omnipresent due to their expense of manufacture and operation. Arcana is far from an exact science, and is treated differently by different cultures: some view the ability to use magic as a blessing, while others see it as antithetical to holiness, and a facet of witchcraft.

Travel is certainly not easy, but pilgrims to the Tower are afforded many rights and protections in most lands. The Tower itself is under the jurisdiction of the Priesthood of Makhios, headquartered in the city of Selenopolis, capital of the Antezuntine Empire, an absolute imperial monarchy.

10,000 crowns is more than a peasant could hope to make in a lifetime, roughly equivalent to the cost of 20(!) good warhorses. It’s a bit hard to equate this to a tangible value in real-world currency, but fret not! There will be opportunities to appraise the worth of your loot within the Tower.

Not sure if my build is good for anything, but I guess if I die I'll get to try something else! :D

First idea was unshakeable nun, as pretty much a morale tank with whatever "communing with the divine" is on the side, and my second idea was a non-combat knight. Who would probably work as a great normal tank if we found heavy armor.

For some reason basically all of my ideas involved dumping Skill.

Actually was gonna propose maybe that either Meleria or Isolde would like having a hired guard in the form of Siegrid cause I made a point of my character as a guard.he functions particularly good in a party. Cause of the Soldier perk.

Like, climbing to the top/bottom of the tower or something?

Meleria does not have anything like the money to hire someone to guard her through the tower.

It's for a cut if the profits gained in the tower.
that doesn't make sense though. You do the work and only get part of the pay? Why would you agree to that? That only works if I'm also selling you a resource, be it information, a skillset, or money.

Other resources include your own emotional commitments like your personal loyalty or your pity.

Also, horizon:  heavy armor doesn't limit mobility very badly (https://youtu.be/qzTwBQniLSc)

I'd say that Siegrid would be hesitant but he'd work for Arek if he asked. Guarding and fighting, and protecting the booty (and treasure) is all he knows.

This is yet unknown - if anyone has ever reached the Tower's summit and escaped, they are bereft of their memory of such.

We've waited long enough - first turn is on its way.

Post by: Rethi-Eli on May 05, 2023, 12:55:35 pm
The air is thick with the sage-scented smoke that wafts over you from the censers of the Tower's priests. You seven are the day's entrants to the Tower, and before your entrance, you have been treated to a brief ceremony: a morose banquet, a prayer to Makhios, and a draught of honey wine constitute the customary send-off of all tower-delvers. You have had little time to introduce yourselves to your fellow tower-delvers on this day, but at the very least, you were able to provide them all with a brief introduction, and perhaps a name by which you wish to be referred.

"Proceed, now, and prove yourselves as warriors!" the frail head priest exclaims, stretching his withered hands out to the sky. The Tower's doors are pulled open, and the entrance sits before you, a yawning maw leading into complete darkness. The sensation of crossing the Tower's threshold is strange and ethereal; your movement is sluggish and uncoordinated, as if wading through water, and your head spins. The sensation passes quickly, but the disorientation lasts more than long enough for the priests to shut the doors behind you, enveloping you wholly in the Tower's darkness.

This, too, passes. As the darkness recedes, you find yourselves standing in a long, high-ceilinged hall. It is anything but empty, with people of all sorts scattered about. Some stand guard at the fore of a large pile of assorted chests and barrels, stashed away in one of the hall's corners. Others have various objects laid out in front of them on ornate carpets, and a few are haggling over the price of their wares with potential customers. The vast majority, however, are doing nothing at all, either wandering aimlessly or sitting complacently against the gray, barren wall. A few take notice as you enter, casting unfriendly glances your way.

"Fresh meat!" one cries out, undiscernible amid the sullen crowd, "You won't make it a day!"

At the far end of the hall, opposite of where you find yourselves now, an ornate spiral staircase leads upwards.

"Welcome!" a higher-pitched voice calls out, as a brown-haired and one-armed young human woman pushes her way through the throng of loiterers.

"Don't mind the rabble. This sullen lot is happy to put down anyone they can. You're on the first floor, after all - this is where the wheat is separated from the chaff. I'm Ekaterina Phokaina, long-time prisoner of the Tower, potentially at your service. See, there's much to learn of the Tower, and as a long-time prisoner here, I have that knowledge. I'm happy to avail it to any one of you... for a mere 20% share of anything you find, I'll accompany you. Anyone interested?"

Judging by the intrigued glances of the others on the floor, and how some of them are starting to carefully approach, it seems like this isn't the only person taking an interest to you. Before anyone can begin to answer Ekaterina, one of you, crimson-eyed and cat-like, collapses to the ground.

Isolde
You have barely regained your bearings from entering the Tower before you are once again accosted by dizziness and weakness. This time, however, the feeling is familiar: the warmth of the light you see as your eyes squeeze shut is familiar to you, a common precursor to your visions. They come in a flurry of shapes and colors, yet most prominent among them is the sanguine red of spilled blood, and the darkness that you entered only a moment ago. The only lasting image in this visual bombardment is the silhouette of a figure; a kneeling, broad-shouldered man, wearing a winged helmet and carrying a short spear.

When the visions fade and you come to, you are on the ground. It takes a moment longer for the strength to return to your limbs.

"Trust is something that don't have a price." without elaborating the old man followed suit with the less tactful man "Only thing I really care for is having enough gold to afford a meal or a sturdy blade." to him he only cared about having enough to afford the equipment to brave the Tower. "How far will you go with us?"

"Ideally, as far as I'm able. I've done guide-work before, and I just need the slightest bit more to pay off the debt that drove me to this place in the first place. Yeah, I'd take you to the end, and, if all goes well, I'd get out with you."

"from looks of this one, this parasite will follow you far enough to stick a dagger int thou back and no furthermore."
Mu says over his shoulder towards Meleria before confidently heading off towards the Stairs upwards.

Frankly, your usefulness is questionable at best. If I really wanted a guide, I would rather go to one of those lazy wretches.

After this, Arek studies the room for anything overtly magical to study.

Roll Conviction: 2+1+1 = 4
Result: Partial Success

After the immediate refusal of Mu, Siegrid, Shanks and Arek, Ekaterina's brow furrows. She does not hide her desperation well as she turns back to those who remained to lend an ear.

"...perhaps a 10% cut is better called for? I suppose I can guide well enough, but I can't fight like used to before this," she says, waving the stump of her left arm, "so half the services for half the price! I think that quite reasonable, right?"

Isolde props herself up immediately when she regains enough strength to do so, growling and glancing between the strangers around her.

"...I saw blood. And... a soldier. Wings on his helm."
Regaining some of her senses, she looks between Meleria and the one-armed woman and seems to relax a little.
"'Scuse me, ma'am. Sometimes I see stuff of the future. Just that's what got me this far. I think yer deal is a good one, may I know your name?"

Ekaterina looks a bit wary as Isolde comes to. Laughing nervously, she takes a step forwards and offers her hand to help Isolde fully to her feet.

"I'm glad you think the offer's a good one. Like I said, quite reasonable! I'm Ekaterina, friend. I've spent a long time here, but never before have I met someone who can tell the future. I figure there are a lot of folks here who would have avoided the place like the plague were it that they had that same foresight. Let me show you around, and prove that I'm worth the charge while I'm at it."

Turning to the rest of you, Ekaterina points out to each of the distinct locations in the hall.

"As I said, this is the first floor, where those unwilling or unable to ascend the Tower languish. Not a place you should plan on staying long, but not one without its merits. The large stash of loot in the eastern corner belongs to Lodovico Mercator. Perhaps the richest man in the Tower, and one who has never set foot past the first floor. His is a long story, but it's best not to get involved in it at all - Mercator's a lender, and his men are debt collectors. Armed to the teeth with the Tower's finest. Anything not good enough for Mercator's enforcers, however, is loaned out - arms and armor, useful tools, and even a bit of magic here and there. Try to skip out on paying for anything you borrow, however, and his goons will find you soon enough. He practically owns this floor, but if you don't borrow from him, you'll never find yourself in his debt."

She turns to the far less impressive items being marketed on the carpets.

"Though far less impressive, everything on the floor opposite Mercator is for sale - no debts, no thugs, just business. 'Course, not a single thing is sold without Mercator's say-so, so it's usually all junk: anything of real value is bought by him before anyone else lays an eye on it. 'Course, being new here, buying isn't an option for you - nobody takes credit."

Finally, Ekaterina makes a wide, sweeping gesture, indicating all of the hall's remaining forlorn populace.

"Anyone who isn't here for business isn't worth paying any mind to. They're lost souls, walking corpses - all roads end, for them, in death. They would perish if they dared ascend the Tower, but remaining here tears at their sanity: every now and then one of them goes berserk, sometimes even killing a couple of the other failures before Mercator's guards cut them down. The ones that are sane, if nothing else, are often of a venerable age - neither time nor hunger ravage the body within these walls. The ones that still remember how to speak have some amazing stories - but they are all cowards nonetheless. Anyone of note will be found higher in the tower, not at its base. So... pretty handy stuff, right?"

"At least you're trying, unlike this useless lot. I'll split my share with you, Ekaterina, at least until I'm accustomed to this place. If your debt still isn't paid by then, you'll just have to find another way to make money."

As someone who's struggled, Isolde isn't above taking pity on a desperate woman. That and she can appreciate the edge of having foreknowledge.

"Have you seen a man in a winged helmet, wielding a spear? I saw a vision, but I don't know what to think of it. A warning, perhaps."

I got age to back me experience, maybe you can use it to become a better guide. And I'll make sure ye don't die along the way? I'd say that's a fair trade fer the time being?" "Gahhh! Shanks keeps dosh no share!"

Onwards the dosh shall be Shanks!

Spoiler:  Shanks The Monsters (click to show/hide)
"from looks of this one, this parasite will follow you far enough to stick a dagger int thou back and no furthermore."
Mu says over his shoulder towards Meleria before confidently heading off towards the Stairs upwards.
Spoiler: Mu (click to show/hide)

Mu and Shanks the Monsters ascend the stairs, receiving jealous stares from the first floor's denizens as they do so. Opening the door at the staircase's summit, Mu and Shanks find themselves in an area starkly different from the first floor; though the brickwork and color are the same, as well as the faint, ethereal light that allows sight in an unlit, unwindowed room, this is not one large hall, but rather a small room with a number of connected doorways. Specifically, as well as the option to go back and proceed back down to the first floor, there is a door that leads to the left, and a door that leads straight forwards.

Roll Focus (Shanks): 4+1 = 5
Result: Success
Roll Focus (Mu): 2
Result: Failure

Shanks is able to discern a faint rasping noise emanating from the door on the left, and, furthermore, notices a spatter of dried blood on the door's face and hinge. No such signs present themselves from the door leading straight ahead.

Arek startles as he is jolted awake and narrows his eyes in suspicion, gingerly holding his head as it throbs in pain.“Don’t make me laugh. if you were any good you would be long gone and not wasting your time on newbies. Frankly, your usefulness is questionable at best. If I really wanted a guide, I would rather go to one of those lazy wretches.

After this, Arek studies the room for anything overtly magical to study.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Roll Focus (Arek): 2, 4+3 = 7
Result: Absolute success

Arek needs little more than a quick examination to determine which of the various merchants' wares are magical, and his findings corroborate what Ekaterina said about much of it being worthless junk. This is not entirely true, however - two small pendants being sold by one of the independent merchants have a clear magical resonance, faint though it may be, as well as a fairly significant number of the items guarded by Mercator's men. The greatest concentration of magic and magical items, however, is found on his men - unlike what's arrayed out for potential buyers, the equipage of the enforcers is distinctly magical, of a quality befitting a king in the world without.

As Arek browses Mercator's wares, one of the guards saunters up to him, hand resting on the pommel of his sheathed sword.

"You... I swear I know you. From before the Tower. Seen you, or maybe heard about you. Your visage is not one that is easily mistaken, and yet I cannot place it... who are you?" he asks, his voice gruff yet not overtly hostile.

"... Xing Xing thinks one cannot make money without spending money. One cannot worship without money either. And one can't fight evil without it either."

"Shanks come with Xing Xing. We gather much loot, sell, and profit."

Xing Xing heads to see Mercator for a loaned weapon. Xing Xing does not intend to stay on the First Floor for long.

Xing Xing, meanwhile, gets to finish her examination of Mercator's wares. There's quite a bit here, although most of it seems roughly equivalent in usage and quality - weapons are weapons, no matter their make.

"So where would you suggest we equip ourselves then?"

"The Tower provides, as do the fools who climb it. There's plenty to be found as you ascend - the risk is, in some ways, lesser than that of incurring a debt. Of course, if you can't pay up when Mercator's thugs come to collect, you might be able to come to an agreement - more guards are always welcome, and you have all the time in the world to work off your dues. Do as you please with this knowledge."

Spoiler: Isolde (click to show/hide)

"A winged helmet and a spear? Gods above and below, you might actually be right about seeing the future! 'Course, you might have also studied the iconography of the temple surrounding the Tower, so I suppose I can't be certain, but I have no reason to doubt you - what kind of fool would disbelieve anything here? That would be none other than Makhios himself. He doesn't show his face around here, but he's not the important one; his idols, however, are perhaps the most important thing you could possibly stumble across. They're the only way out. No telling where you'll find one, but they tend to be more frequent the higher you ascend. On very rare occasions, they'll even pop up down here - that's what all these wretches are waiting for. If you couldn't already tell, it's not worth waiting on. Far easier to climb. Last time I went up, however, it was in a group of five; we came across four idols. Bastards left me for dead after they took my arm... that was the fourteenth floor, if memory serves.

"Lass," shaking his head the old man felt bad for the one armed woman as she became desperate "How bout' I cut you a deal between you an' me? I got age to back me experience, maybe you can use it to become a better guide. And I'll make sure ye don't die along the way? I'd say that's a fair trade fer the time being?" Siegrid extended a hand towards Ekaterina, to offer her his protection for her guidance.

Spoiler: Siegrid (click to show/hide)

Roll Conviction: 5+1 = 6
Result: Critical success

"Yes... I suppose you're right. In truth... when I was asking you for pay, I wasn't being wholly honest. If I climb with you, I'd be in your debt just as much as you could possibly find yourselves in mine. Safety in numbers, and all that. Maybe honesty will make sure I'm not left behind this time around. Very well, new friends - you lead on, and I'll follow. I can't stand this dismal place much longer. I suppose I'll be sticking with the future-seer. Maybe she can tell me if I ever get out of here!" Ekaterina exclaims, voice tinged with the slightest tremulous emotion.

"Gehhh left door danger! Forward!"

Through the door straight ahead!

Spoiler:  Shanks The Monsters (click to show/hide)

Roll Focus: 2+1 = 3

Shanks nudges the door open and surreptitiously scans the room it leads into. In terms of appearance, this one is much like that which preceded it: vaguely rectangular, fabricated of dull stone, and bare of any embellishing touch. Unlike the previous room, the center of this room reveals a tantalizing target - a corpse in the center of the room. While the dead body is wholly unremarkable, the dagger stuck in its back is perhaps a touch more useful. Nothing other than the body reveals itself within the room, but Shanks is no fool - generally, people do not get backstabbed without a little external help.

Aside from going back to the previous room, this room also has a hallway that leads further ahead. This hallway, unlike the other entryways, is not blocked by a door on either side, and Shanks can see directly down it - it leads to yet another plain room... with a large chest at its end. Shanks knows a lot about treasure, including the fact that it is generally not laid bare for all to see, unless who ever put it there wants it to be seen.

". . ."
Mu accepts the little monster's words with a savage grin, but rather than heading on ahead, heads to the Left Door to commit Violence.

Mu, eager to enter the fray, rushes through the left door and assumes a fighting stance. Sure enough, he is not alone in the room - two pale, hunched figures are crouched over a mutilated body. As Mu enters, they whirl about to face him, torn strips of manflesh still dangling from their barbed, bloody maws. Everything about their appearance is not quite human: an extra pair of ribs there, an extra finger there, arms that are just a bit too long and heads just a bit too small. Their movement befits their appearance, the uneven and uncomfortable jerking movement giving the appearance of a gangly marionette when combined with their stretched physique. One of them emits a terrible screech, and Mu hears a number of response cries echo out from further on in the Tower. They could be coming from anywhere - this room has, in addition to the door from which Mu entered, three other connections to other rooms in the tower.

Roll Focus: 4

Mu notices that the mutilated corpse is gripping a rudimentary wooden club. Such a crude implement is hardly better than a bare fist, but hardly better is still an improvement. The only issue is that it is now behind the two chittering ghouls, meaning any attempt to seize it would be risky...

Amon frowns, a uncomfortable expression on his face. “I don’t quite remember what I was like outside of the tower, I can’t recall anything past a few hours ago, but I don’t think I was very well liked…

See what else the guard has to say and see if I can finagle anything valuable off of him. After this nab the pendants and “promise” to pay them back as I skedaddle to catch up with the group.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Roll Conviction: 4

"Right. Well, I suppose it's not that important. Who you were outside the Tower isn't worth a rat's ass, anyhow. Doesn't matter if you're a king or a farmhand, so long as you've got guts. Let me just make a note of your debt - 800 crowns - and you can be on your way. Don't bother coming back to pay up - we'll come to you when it's time to collect. Just remember, friend: if you value your life, don't cross the Boss."

Roll Focus: 5, 6+3-2 = 7
Result: Absolute success

Arek has little difficulty identifying the rudimentary magics present in both pendants. Though he does not quite understand why, he finds himself somewhat disappointed in the benign nature of both.
Curative Charm (Active - The wearer may, at any time, gain 1 Arcana in order to remove 0.25 Wounds from themselves or any living target within arm's reach. Cannot be used at maximum Arcana.)
Nullification Charm (Active - The wearer may, at any time, gain 1 Arcana in order to end the effects of poison, venom, or any other intoxicating substance upon themselves or any living target within arm's reach. Cannot be used at maximum arcana.)

"Yes. I'd rather not stay in this place much longer."
Proceed to the next floor. Since there's not many fighters, stay frontline to protect the squishies-who-aren't-me.

He took a moment to don his equipment before making his way up the stairs with the others "Better to be safe than sorry." he mumbled to himself as he ascended.

Spoiler: Siegrid (click to show/hide)

Xing Xing acquires a staff and Siegrid a cudgel before they, too, proceed to the second floor along with Isolde, Arek and Meleria. Ekaterina is also in tow, though she places herself firmly in the backline. Not a moment passes after entering the first room before the group is accosted by an unbearable, wailing shriek, emanating from a room to the left. Looking through the door doesn't offer much help in discerning the source, as the group's view is almost entirely obscured by the broad, tattooed back of Mu. The room directly ahead does not bode much better - looking through the open door, a corpse is visible, dead in a pool of blood at the room's center. The strange, arcane light that avails your sight does not reveal anything beyond this, fading quickly to murky darkness.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(In?)

Vaolu, though disconcerted from his entry into the tower, manages to make quick work of getting his bearings, mostly through eavesdropping on a larger group that just ascended. There are a couple of shops scattered throughout the first floor, and not much else of note - apparently, the languid folk who are dispersed throughout the hall are of the Tower's lowest caste.

Forget the probably trapped treasure chest for a second its a free dagger!... Shanks wonders who leaves a perfectly good dagger in someone's back anyway?

As Shanks reaches the dead body, he hears a small click and feels the ground beneath him depress ever so slightly - pressure plate!

Roll Focus (Acrobatics): 3, 6+1-2 = 5
Result: Success

A second dagger is launched directly at Shanks from a formerly hidden slot in the wall, but it's hardly so much as entered the air before Shanks is out of the way. Now Shanks has not one, but two daggers! Subsequent attempts to trigger the plate, however, are met with nothing more than the sound of an empty shutter and the whooshing of air. All good things, it seems, must come to an end.

Arek probes the charms - cheap trinkets with equally cheap magics bound to them. While the disadvantage is obvious enough, there is one advantage: weaker spells are easier to unravel, redirecting the flow of arcane energies through them to achieve a more desirable effect. Nonetheless, it is a difficult task for even experienced spellweavers, and failure runs the risk of the loss of all magical properties. Focusing on the green pendant first, Arek begins nudging the flow of energy within, twisting and pinching to add a quality of sharpness to the soft current.

Roll Focus (Magic): 1, 3+3-3 = 3
Result: Partial failure

The magic in the green pendant is stubborn and unmalleable, and despite Arek's best efforts, refuses to be shaped to his will. It is strong enough, at least, to survive the tampering intact, but just barely - any further dabbling with the already strained magics will have to be almost perfectly precise if the magic is not to unweave entirely. Turning his focus to the blue pendant, he once again tries to reshape the magic within, though this second attempt proves even more difficult than the first.

Roll Focus (Magic): 4, 5+3-4 = 4
Result: Partial Success

The second pendant proves a somewhat better target, and Arek now finds that the magic within, sure enough, is more to his taste. Cracks weave their way through the formerly clear blue crystal, and the metal of the pendant compresses, as if held under a great force.

Nullification Charm (Active - The wearer may, at any time, gain 1 Arcana in order to end the effects of poison, venom, or any other intoxicating substance upon themselves or any living target within arm's reach. Cannot be used at maximum arcana.)
Pullification Charm (Active - The wearer may, at any time, gain 1 Arcana in order to exert an extreme amount of pulling force on any target within 30 feet. The force is strong enough to cause harm (0.75 Wound) when directly applied, and is not mitigated by armor. This effect may be spread among any number of targets, but its force is divided equally among these.)

Apply Feet to Ghoul Heads.

Spoiler: Mu (click to show/hide)
Ghosts."God's Verdict, Xing Xing."

Rush into combat with the ghostsghouls with a spinning sweep.

"I don't have-"
She's cut off by the blood-curdling screech. The catkin flinches for a moment but quickly corrects, her ears shooting forward again.
"Lead the way, Siegrid. I'm right beside you."

Let Siegrid decide where we're going, but stay in the front.

Spoiler: Isolde (click to show/hide)

The older man sighed shaking his head, then brandished his cudgel "My bets a traps ahead," corpse in the middle of the floor, weird arcane light? Yeah, he wasn't a fool "Ah well with me then, let's make sure those two morons don't die."

Follow Mu through the door, assess the situation then club a ghoul in the skull.

Spoiler: Siegrid (click to show/hide)
"I don't have-"

Let Siegrid decide where we're going, but stay in the front.

Spoiler: Isolde (click to show/hide)
Stay following closely behind Siegrid and Isolde without comment

Spoiler: Meleria (click to show/hide)

Siegrid, Isolde, and Xing Xing rush into the fray, while Ekaterina and Meleria follow closely behind. Mu is the first to strike, lashing out with a lightning-quick kick to the face of the nearest ghoul.

Roll Skill-at-arms: 1+1-1 = 1

Mu's kick is incredibly powerful, but he is unprepared as the ghoul bends backwards, its spine folding back at a 90 degree angle so that his kick passes directly over it. The mighty kick collides instead with the wall, shattering some of the stone and sending a spray of obscuring, gray dust into the air with a crack. Though the obscuring dust doesn't hide the silhouettes of the ghouls, it certainly makes it harder to discern them.

Xing Xing, undeterred, lets a spinning strike fly from her staff. She needs neither sight nor thought to guide her strike: her faith is both her bulwark and blade.

Roll Conviction: 3+3-2 = 4

Xing Xing's strike rebounds off of the arm of the ghoul on the left with a satisfying crunching noise. The creature emanates another ear-piercing shriek as pieces of desiccated skin flake from the wound, revealing the decomposing flesh and bone beneath.

Siegrid, giving the beast no time to recuperate, follows Xing Xing's attack with a crushing blow of his own.

Roll Skill-at-arms: 4+2-2 = 4

The ghoul shields itself with its good arm as Siegrid's cudgel falls upon its head. The cudgel, though a simple implement, gives good account of itself, the lacquered wood proving more than sufficient for shattering the creature's right arm. Both of its forelimbs now rendered useless, the foul creature lunges towards Mu, teeth snapping. It proves quite easy for Mu to divert the attack, and his quick reaction allows him to divert the ghoul's path into the wall, into which it slams, stunning it.

The uninjured ghoul leaps instead towards Xing Xing, claws outstretched. It manages to scratch her slightly, but the wound is superficial, drawing only a trickle of blood. Xing Xing receives 0.25 Wounds!

Roll Brawn (Resistance): 3, 5+2 = 7
Result: Absolute success

Xing Xing feels the burn of the beast's venom as it enters her bloodstream, but she is unfazed - learning to resist and nullify poisons such as these was an essential part of her training. Were she unable to do so, after all, she would have died in the temple. Xing Xing calms herself, lowering her heartbeat to a faint murmur and halting the spread of the foul stuff through her blood, before contracting her muscles around the wound and expelling the majority of the tainted blood.

Isolde and Meleria, though unable to strike immediately at the ghouls, find themselves able to examine the area more thoroughly.

Roll Focus: 3, 4+2 = 6
Result: Critical success

Aside from the wooden club clutched in a dismembered hand, the corpse in the room carries a handful of other objects of note - two silver rings shine on the fingers of the severed hand, while the belt around the mangled waist holds a string-drawn pouch.

Isolde and Meleria aren't the only ones to notice as a third ghoul skitters into the room on all fours, hissing its displeasure. Like the others, the mouth and claws of this one are caked with dried blood and other filth, and there seems to be only an animal intelligence behind its unblinking eyes.

Now Shanks will move onward to the probably trapped treasure chest... Actually Shanks will throw a dagger at the chest before opening it just to be safe Shanks can never be too careful!

Spoiler:  Shanks The Monsters (click to show/hide)

The dagger bounces off the chest, producing both the normal thud of metal on wood as well as the less audible click of some hidden mechanism. A panel of the wall slides down into the ground, revealing a passage behind the chest that leads to another staircase. It seems this is the way up to the third floor. Opening the chest reveals something interesting - a small piece of paper is all that occupies its roomy interior. Glowing runes pulse with a soft yellow light from the page's surface.

Roll Focus: 2+1-2 = 1

Shanks has absolutely no clue what these runes mean.

"I can try, though I don't have any practice. It just runs in my family. I'll give it a shot."
Quickly strip the rings off and see if I can figure out what they do and how to use them.

Spoiler: Meleria (click to show/hide)
Protect Meleria by whatever means prove necessary.
"Makhios, I am not afraid."

Spoiler: Isolde (click to show/hide)

Meleria scrambles forwards and expediently wrenches the rings from the hand.

Roll Focus: 3+2-1 = 4

One of the rings seems fairly standard, but the second... as Meleria clutches it, she feels an almost uncomfortable warmth emanate from it, spreading through her palm and up her arm. Putting the ring on, she is quickly able to attune herself to it - time seems to slow down as her mind is occupied by a single image. Despite the chaos of the fight around her, Meleria is focused on the crackling of flame, the shimmering distortion of hot air, the smell of smoke. As the thoughts grow more real, reality shapes itself likewise - a small flame twirls and dances in Meleria's hand. As her attention returns to the ring, she finds it now inert - the magic no longer resides within the trinket, but within her.

New Spell: Immolate (0.5 Arcana, 0.5 Wound, ranged, can ignite enemies for continuous damage)

Meleria's momentary stupor leaves her open to an attack as the newest ghoul hurls itself at her.

Roll Skill-at-arms: 6

The ghoul's pounce is stopped suddenly as it's knocked out of the air by Isolde. The two collide, and the ghoul is sent careening into one of its fellows, bringing both down in a tangle of wiry limbs. Isolde, however, manages to steady herself with relative ease.

...

Trip the ghoul who attacked Xing Xing. Break the knee.

Roll Conviction: 1, 5+3-2 = 6

With the ghoul already splayed out on the ground after Isolde's timely intervention, Xing Xing has little trouble snapping its knee. The creature writhes about on the ground, hissing and lashing out ineffectively with its claws. Xing Xing finishes by planting the base of her staff in the creature's skull, ending its writhing for good. One step closer to the purification of this vile place. As Xing Xing gazes down at the defeated creature, she cannot help but feel invigorated. Something about this bloody work is undeniably refreshing.

"Hmph, fuckers always travel in packs. Go figure." the old merc' spits to the side then moves to the ghouls flank to strike the back of its neck with his cudgel.

Spoiler: Siegrid (click to show/hide)

Roll Skill-at-arms: 3, 6+2-1 = 7

Siegrid slips behind the other injured ghoul before bringing his club down on its neck. This time, the creature fails to block his blow, and it collapses in a burbling heap as its spine fractures under the well-placed strike. Siegrid issues a quick coup-de-grace to the downed beast, caving in its skull with a final strike. Vague memories of his soldiering years unveil themselves again... Siegrid begins to remember the thrill of the fight, the excitement of staking his life on every fight - and he remembers that he was damn good at it, too.

Perk gained!
Skullcrusher - If an attack with a one-handed mace, cudgel, club, or hammer would leave an enemy 0.5 Wounds or fewer from death, they are instead killed by that attack

Spoiler: Arek (click to show/hide)

Arek, seeing the ghoul, has a sharp but sudden headache which gives him a idea. Arek tried to use if he can drag up any memory of a spell he can use to reanimate the dead ghoul friends.

Roll Hidden

Arek tries delving into his memory. People, places, sounds and sights, all detached from one another... sifting through the mess that remains is like tunneling through sand. With each jumbled memory he tries to cast aside, another pours into its place. Only two things remain constant throughout - suffering... and desire. For the briefest of instants, Arek finds a glimpse of his former power hidden away - only long enough to sense something familiar. Someone or something from his past was unmistakably here.

Acquire club for better Ghoul beating.

With the ghouls all either dispatched or incapacitated, Mu seizes the club on the ground.

Cudgel (one-handed, 0.25 wound)

Finding its balance and weight satisfactory, Mu applies it to some well-deserved ghoul beating.

3, 6+2-2 = 6

The last ghoul is hardly able to shake itself from its stupor before it finds itself on the receiving end of Mu's new club. The creature's fangs are scattered across the room as Mu knocks its jaw out of place. A finishing blow dispatches the last ghoul, leaving the room silent and emptied of undead. The distant chittering of the pack fades away, followed by a clank from a hidden mechanism as doors on the north and south walls slam shut, blocked by heavy stone slabs. The eastern door leads back to the first room, while the western door leads to the unknown.

Grab both magical quarterstaffs and Maille armor, unless armor prevents spellcasting.  I also grab the pendant.  If I can only get one thing, I grab the pendant.

The guard who's supervising Vaolu chuckles as he take both staves and the pendant.

Roll Focus: 4+3-2 = 5

From just a moment's touch, Vaolu is able to somewhat identify the magics within each staff. One of them brings to mind the unmistakable coppery scent of blood, while the other is more abstract - Vaolu's skin prickles and a shiver runs down his spine as he rests his hand on it. He freezes up for a moment, only to be brought back to reality by the voice of the sneering guard.

"A loner wants all of this? I'm really not interested in having to strip all of this off of your corpse, assuming it isn't lost or destroyed. The pendant's simple enough, but two staves? Give me one good reason why you'd need BOTH of them and I might let you have 'em. Emphasis on might."

Seems like the guard's lending Vaolu an ear, for now.

With that out of the way, Vaolu heads up the stairs to the first floor. To the West is a large group of people - likely the others who entered with him - while directly ahead, to the North, are a series of connected rooms that stretch out beyond what Vaolu can make out in the faint light of the Tower.

Spoiler: Arek (click to show/hide)

Arek, driven by a manic force, relentlessly searches for any trace of his past in the area. FIND IT

Roll Hidden

It's been here all along... and it has been beckoning. Only a fool flees from the world. The strong, the deserving, those chosen for greatness... they stride confidently ahead, taking what is theirs to take, always coveting more, for what is life if not the playground of desire? There's no point in searching for your past in here. A wall stands without this place, erected by a god. It is meant for keeping memories within, but any memories lost without are barred all the same. Your patron is ever curious to see if you are more than just a vessel... go forth boldly, and take what is yours to take! If you follow this path, we are certain to meet again, Arek.

Whatever it is, it sends a chill down Arek's spine. Familiar, but a memory hanging just out of reach... or perhaps held there by another. No matter - the sensation passes, and Arek is left only with a dull pain in his head and the taste of blood in his throat.

Xing Xing nods. The room is cleared. She then proceeds to take anything useful off the corpse at her feet with a small smile

"Don't mention it, 'm just glad you're okay. Was that fire?"

Look for anything I could use as a weapon in this room. Then West.

Spoiler: Isolde (click to show/hide)

The only remaining object of note that is yet to be examined is the pouch on the mangled corpse's belt. Taking it and undoing the drawstring, Xing Xing hears the clatter of metal on metal before seeing the wealth inside - a pouch of coins, each bearing the scowling visage of the Warrior God, Makhios on the face, and his characteristic winged helmet on the inverse. Pouring the contents out onto her palm, Xing Xing counts 6 coins. Each coin being roughly the size of a 50 crown piece, and clearly wrought of gold, she can reasonably estimate the value of the coins to be around 300 crowns total.

+300 Crowns!

Meanwhile, Isolde scours the room for a weapon of any sort - anything is preferable to facing creatures such as these ghouls bare-handed - but nothing presents itself readily. The only objects of note within the room are the bodies of the fallen, and while using the poison-tipped arm of a ghoul did cross Isolde's mind at first, such an idea was quickly rendered useless, for already, the bodies of the ghouls are decomposing, bones crumbling to powder and flesh seemingly melting away into the floor. As Isolde watches the bodies wither and desiccate, it returns with the next blink.

Chains criss-cross her vision, running up, down, left, right, and at every diagonal, depth, and orientation. They are numerous, perhaps hundreds, thousands, or even millions, an uncountable number all the same...

As the vision fades, Isolde is somewhat pleasantly surprised: instead of coming to her senses to find herself dizzy and collapsed on the floor, she is still standing as she was, as are the others. No more than a mere second could have passed. Isolde waits for the rest of the group, ready to proceed West.

"I... I did it! I di-woah!"
I scramble away (abandoning the rings) after being saved by Isolde, still carefully cupping my newfound flame in my hand.
"T-thank you!"

EDIT: After I finish, I'll be following the group as we head west.

Spoiler: Meleria (click to show/hide)

Roll Focus: 6+2 = 8
Result: Overwhelming Success

Meleria is completely taken aback. Never before has she felt this feeling, yet it feels so natural... finally channeling her energy into this tiny, roiling flame provides an indescribable, undeniable sense of relief. The warmth of the flame brings neither pain nor damage to her hand, while the mass of flame itself feels and moves naturally, as if it is an extension of her body, some tiny appendage growing from her palm. Meleria's relief quickly turns to concern, however, as the flame continues to burn even after she tries to will it away. Energy continues to siphon from her body to fuel the ever-growing flame like water pouring from an opened floodgate! Meleria only manages to snuff the flame after expending a great deal of energy, and the rapid release of that energy leaves her arm wracked with pain... but she is left even more keenly aware of the magic residing in her.

Perk gained!

Spoiler: Mu (click to show/hide)

"If there are, they're ahead of us."
"In that case be ready for that. Come along then."

Move forward, but before opening the door we did not enter from, put an ear to it and listen for anything.

"Quiet yourselves a second." the old merc hissed, holding up a finger

Spoiler: Siegrid (click to show/hide)

Before departing the room, Siegrid puts an ear to the door ahead. It's ever so faint, but he hears a faint rustling noise, like cloth sliding on cloth. Slowly opening the door alongside Mu, Siegrid reveals the next chamber. Two more unfortunates lie slain on the ground, rent to pieces and picked apart in brutal, grotesque fashion. The center of the room is dominated by a tall statue, not depicting Makhios, interestingly enough, but rather an unremarkable hooded figure clutching a scroll in one hand and a scimitar in the other. It seems like something was once inscribed on the plaque at the statue's base, but whatever it was is worn to the point of illegibility. An open chest sits directly at the statue's base, revealing a small heap of glimmering valuables within.

Roll Focus: Hidden

Siegrid is quick to notice the uneven mass clinging to the ceiling, already wary after hearing the noise coming from the room. Mu, though not privy to the noise, also manages to discern the twitching shapes. Opening the door further allows just a touch more light in, revealing the features of the mass - leathery wings folded over vaguely humanoid forms, bristling with mangy black fur... and heaving, slowly, with the measured breathing of slumber. Giant bats, about 8 of them, hang from the ceiling, stained with - and gorged on - the blood of their victims.

Shanks shall grab the other dagger and pocket the strange paper! Then assuming nothing bad happens Shanks shall head upstairs AND assuming nothing bad continues to happen for Shanks, Shanks will rest a bit and study the paper while Shanks waits for others to catch up to Shanks.

Spoiler:  Shanks The Monsters (click to show/hide)

Rest doesn't do the excited and still energetic Shanks much good, nor does studying the scroll. The intricate runes running across its surface remain indecipherable, and though Shanks understands that magic can sometimes manifest through the physical properties of magical items, nothing particularly special seems to be happening even as he gives the surface a delicate sniff. Waiting for the group also seems to be of little use - the noise of their passage fades away as they head further away. Just as Shanks is about to give up on them, another familiar face ascends the stairs - one of the other new tower-delvers, carrying a pair of staves.

Sorry, thought I posted a action. Will post later
Sounds good. I will be posting the next turn at some point later today.
Busy weekend boss?

Stupidly busy. Exam week rears its ugly head...

((Welp, if only one of our group had the Silent trait, that could guarantee sneaking past those sleeping bats, to get at the treasure without a fight. Though that would assume it's not trapped loot, and let's be honest here it's certainly trapped.
If Xing Xing is willing to share those coins, we could go back down and purchase some basic weapons at least. A staff for each of us, or I guess Xing Xing could hoard and buy a nice bardiche.))

move up to Siegrid and Mu at the entrance to the next room so I don't get left behind, then rest for the turn and see if my arcana recovers.

Spoiler: Meleria (click to show/hide)
Roll Conviction: 1+2 = 3
Meleria takes a moment to sit down, recuperating from expending so much energy in such a short duration. Catching her breath helps steady her somewhat, but she's unable to rest well between talking of the other folks in the room, the pain that still wracks her hand, and most notably, the small swarm of giant bats no more than a few seconds away from her should they wake. Troubled rest is still better than no rest at all, however, and Meleria feels her connection to the arcane slowly begin to mend itself.

Meleria loses 0.5 Arcana!

"I saw... chains. Zillions of 'em, going everywhere. Trapping something? What could need so many..?" Isolde whispers.

Take a peek into the room ahead.

Spoiler: Isolde (click to show/hide)

Roll Conviction: 3+3 = 6

Isolde, though concerned at first, cannot help but feel somewhat emboldened when she looks to the room. Another vision comes, though this one is certainly far less esoteric. She sees the room she is in as though looking down from above. Passing through the doorway into the next like a swooping bird, her vision dives into the chest at the room's end. Buried under the heap of coins, which her strange point of view slips and weaves through, is a small dagger lying at the chest's bottom. It's tiny, strangely shaped, and lacks a handle, but embedded in its base is a shimmering blue stone. Its frost-covered surface is motionless, but the light emanating within shifts and pulses violently, as if desperate to burst out. The vision ends, and Isolde is left looking at the huddled forms of the sleeping bats.

"Finally! Shanks is done waiting! Onwards with Shanks!"

Onwards regardless if they follow Shanks or not! Shanks shall get the best loot!

Spoiler:  Shanks The Monsters (click to show/hide)

Roll Focus: 1+1 = 2

Emboldened and thus-far triumphant, Shanks the Monsters strikes out ahead, reaching the third floor in record time... to find what looks to be the site of a fairly recent skirmish. No less than three slain bodies are strewn on the floor, all seemingly stripped bare at a glance. A blood trail leaves ample evidence of the whereabouts battle's survivors, leading down a corridor to the left and through a very slightly ajar door. The only other way to proceed is to the right, through another door that is ever so slightly open.

Quickly head back to the start to pay off the debt and cash in some new gear. Armor would be helpful.

Weaving her way through the others and descending the stairs down to the first floor, Xing Xing stops at the first floor shop and puts her 300 crowns on the table.

"Good timing, friend," one of the tired-faced guards says, "the boss just cleared a lot of new haul to hit the floor. I was telling the lads, 'such a shame those new folks left already', but here you are."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Keywords definitions (click to show/hide)

Do i see any groups i could join?  If so, I do.

Vaolu has little issue slipping into the ranks of the group at the door. A moment of observation and he's aware of the situation - the room they intend to enter next possesses a heap of treasure, as well as a brood of sleeping giant bats. Quite the dilemma.

Mu readies his Club to Bat some Bats.

Spoiler: Mu (click to show/hide)

Mu is left somewhat disappointed by the group's reticence, but it is no matter - whatever may come, he is ready. Taking a position by the door with his club raised, he ensures that he will be the first to act if any of the creatures ahead decide to try and attack. His focus sharpened and now adjusted to the balance of his new weapon, he is nigh certain that his next strike will not fail.

Spoiler: Arek (click to show/hide)

"They restin'. Someone sneaks in and takes the treasure, then we leave."

Arek wipes a trickle of blood from his mouth onto his hand with a slight grimace. “Bah. Cowardice.

Arek follows the group and proceeds west. He sneaks closer to inspect the scroll in the room.

(I am with Egan and gang right? I don’t remember.)

Roll Focus: 4+3 = 7

Though the scroll is wrought of stone, same as the rest of the statue, it bears writing inscribed upon its surface nonetheless. Some of it has eroded, same as whatever once was written at the statue's base, but some of the writing on the scroll is yet legible. What remains can be stitched together, but the even if some of the words remain, the meaning is perhaps already forever lost.

After a... mortal companions... mission wholly victorious... bound within the... seek out... eternity... Warden Sevuzyulir.

All in all, Arek can decipher about 1/3 of the scroll.

Taking the road less traveled seems to work out well for Shanks! Peak through the right door and if it looks safe to Shanks walk in!

Spoiler:  Shanks The Monsters (click to show/hide)

Roll Focus: 1+1 = 2

Shanks takes a surreptitious glance into the room to the right. The room seems devoid of occupants, and doesn't have any further connections - a dead end. In the center of the room sits an interesting fixture: a statue of Makhios. The tip of the spear he carries in his right hand emits a faint red pulse, while shadowy glyphs dance across the surface of the tablet in his left. The room smells particularly musty, somewhere between a damp basement and an animal's lair.

Enter the room and go for the dagger, picking up the coins one at a time as quietly as possible.

Spoiler: Isolde (click to show/hide)

Roll Conviction: 2+3 = 5

Though the bats are seemingly sound asleep, creeping under them is still a nerve-wracking experience. Despite the imminent danger, Isolde remains steadfast and unafraid, guided by her vision to the treasure-laden coffer. Sifting patiently through the coins within, Isolde is able to uncover and extricate the dagger, exactly the same in all regards as it seemed in her mind's eye. Feeling its weight, Isolde is certain that the implement is meant to be thrown. Even to one unfamiliar with the flow of arcana as Isolde, the energy within the stone at the knife's base is clearly unstable and hardly contained.

Throwing Knife (Frost-Imbued, Unstable)

Continue recovering in silence

Spoiler: Meleria (click to show/hide)

Roll Conviction: 5+1 = 6

Meleria, emboldened by Isolde's success and the implacability of the huddled bats, finds it much easier to catch her breath. Her connection to the arcane current mends itself as her spirits lift, and soon enough, magical potential is coursing through her once again.

Meleria loses 2 Arcana!

Xing Xing will take a Maile Shirt and rest a bit before going back out. A minor debt, easily repaid. Light armor that won't cause issue.

Settling her old tab and paying off a good chunk of her newer debt in the process, Xing Xing walks away with a fine hauberk.

Maille Shirt (light, 0.5 wound reduction)

Heading back up the stairs, Xing Xing is able to retrace her steps and rejoin the group fairly easily. They now wait outside another room filled with giant bats, preparing to face these new foes at the very moment.

Seeing no one else wants to fight the monsters, Mu heads in to do so.

Spoiler: Mu (click to show/hide)

Shrugging the mercenary,  seeing as nobody has a fucking plan stood at the door ready to brain a bat with his cudgel if any came flying to the door. Better to keep the only door they've seen so far clear so the others can get in before the enemy did.

Spoiler: Siegrid (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Arek (click to show/hide)

Arek tries to piece together anything relevant to his situation from the scroll, and if not possible, he joins Mu in beating up the monsters with his pull charm

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I wait for the others to act.  if they act, I use my equipped staff, trying to conjre some sort of offensive magic

((could I, by any chance, slip my point from skill-at-arms to brawn?))

Growing impatient with the inaction of the others, Mu is the first to stride into the room without making an attempt at stealth, backed up by Siegrid, Vaolu, and Arek, who are ready to engage the bats at a moment's notice. As Mu enters, sure enough, the creatures begin to stir, crimson eyes flicking open and scanning their surroundings. The creatures squeak, click, and screech as they unfurl their leathery wings, and four of them drop down from the ceiling, headed towards the interlopers. It seems as if they are either unaware of Isolde's presence, or simply more focused on the more overt presence of Mu. He is prepared, and takes a swing at the first bat to enter his reach.

Roll Skill-at-arms: 4+2 = 6

A sickening crunch spells the end of the bat, its limp form thudding against the ground after Mu caves its head in. Seems like the straightforward approach was fairly handy.

Perk gained! (Mu)
Implacable - Rolls against fear are not affected by your Wounds value. Additionally, you are immune to fear for the first round of each combat.

Siegrid, too, is prepared to strike, emerging from behind the door as the next bat draws close.

Roll Skill-at-arms: 3+2 = 5

Siegrid finds that bat skulls are, if anything, far easier to crush than most. Despite their size, it turns out that the bats are - individually, at least - fairly fragile creatures. A single blow is more than enough to dispatch another. Two are now dead, another two still incoming, and the last four yet to leave the ceiling.

Arek finds little interesting about the partially-deciphered text: it seems like some sort of memorandum, its significance likely long lost. Turning to the fight at hand, he puts his new charm to use, pulling the last two bats down to the ground.

Roll Focus: 4+3 = 7

The force is more than enough to send the bats slamming down into the ground. It doesn't take a particularly skilled logistician to figure out that the effect seems superb for dealing with flying foes: both bats are either dead or paralyzed after colliding with the stone floor.

Arek gains 0.5 Arcana!

Vaolu, too, prepares to put his magical implement to use.

Roll Focus: 3+3 = 6

Channeling his arcana into his new staff, Vaolu is simultaneously horrified and delighted as one of the bats on the ceiling starts bleeding profusely from its eyes and mouth not a moment later. The blood, instead of falling to the ground, remains suspended in the air, collecting in a globule before being drawn to the tip of the staff, wherein it is seemingly absorbed. Vaolu can feel the energy of the bat's vitae course through the staff and offset some of the Arcana drained by the spell. The bloodless husk of the bat plummets, lifeless, to the ground.

Vaolu gains 0.25 Arcana!

Interesting. I wonder if trying to use the knife will expend it? Maybe better to keep a hold of it for now.

(I don't rest a bit? Would rather not have to pay for medicine or healing cause I got hurt.)
((*raises eyebrow* - did you get wounds or arcana that you are trying to rest to recover?

Not sure if you noticed, the Curative Charm that Arek has trades gaining 1 full arcana to heal 0.25 wounds. This restricted-to-casters-who-can't-have-almost-any-other-perks-beyond-casting-and-requires-a-magic-item-even-for-them healing method heals you at a 4-to-1 exchange rate, meaning arcana is far, far less valuable than wounds are. next notice how much Arcana Meleria is recovering by resting. A conviction roll of 6 recovered 2, and a conviction roll of 3 recovered 0.5, and these are from spending the entire turn resting. So even the "cheap" currency (Arcana) is quite expensive to recover. combine these clues and it makes sense that wounds don't heal on turn-based timescales. probably you could heal if you rested for days instead of turns, but I bet that turn-based-rests aren't going to heal wounds, simply from the context clues.

so since your momentary rest wasn't going to have any effect, it was probably just not mentioned as it's an unimportant side-action instead of an actual turn-action and the DM didn't want you to lose a turn for nothing. So if anything you should probably be glad that the "stand around and do nothing" part of you action was skipped.

I could be wrong of course, I'm not Rethi, but I hope you understand why I seriously doubt that your rest partial-action was capable of accomplishing anything.))

Post by: Egan_BW on June 18, 2023, 05:29:54 pm
(I believe the main use of the curative charm is to get past the whole number breakpoint so that you can heal the rest naturally. Like if you're at 1.7 wounds, you can rest to heal up to 1 wound, use the charm, then keep resting to get to 0 wounds. Also the charm is probably just a low level and weak spell at this point in the game.
Though you're certainly not going to get any healing done without posting you sheet, tric.)

Sorry y'all, I feel like our momentum sputtered out and I'm not really sure how to handle the situation. I hope you all can understand why I'm issuing a moratorium on the Tower - in retrospect, the scope that I had planned for it simply doesn't feel like it works well with the more minimalist RTD style that seem to be most engaging and successful. I avoid minimalists constantly because they're like potato chips. Nice for a moment, but nothing more. In-depth games like this one are where I find real satisfaction.

We've got actions from 5 players. That's still quite a bit of interest. Why not just run a turn where people that haven't posted just stand around and do nothing?

That’s sad. I just got back from my cruise. Are you still interested in running? I can post now because unfortunately, the Bahamas apparently aren’t known for quality Wi-Fi services

All very fair points. I'll have a turn up tomorrow and we'll see what happens!

I'm going to wait one more day, since I'd like to make sure that everyone who's still willing to play can keep up the momentum, but I have a turn at the ready for some time tomorrow, which I'll be posting then regardless of missing turns

I think they've got this, but I need to show that I'm not useless!
I use my fire on the bats overhead!

Spoiler: Meleria (click to show/hide)

Roll Focus: 5+2 = 7

Bolts of fire springs from Meleria's fingertips again, arcing and looping in an almost graceful fashion before colliding with the bats still huddled on the ceiling. Being grouped together, the entire bunch of scorched and set alight, plummeting to the ground in a stinking, burning mess of leathery wings and snapping maws.

Meleria gains 0.5 Arcana!

Interesting. I wonder if trying to use the knife will expend it? Maybe better to keep a hold of it for now.
Wait quietly for the last bats to fly down and attack the others. If one survives, kick it in the back.

Spoiler: Isolde (click to show/hide)

Roll Skill-at-arms: 2, 4

Bat bats for fun and profit.

Spoiler: Mu (click to show/hide)

Roll Skill-at-arms: 1, 4+2 = 6

The immolated bats, left at the mercy of the party, are quickly bludgeoned and dispatched. Mu finds great satisfaction in the way they crunch, while Isolde is less than satisfied with the way they dirty her boots. Nonetheless, the room is cleared!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Magic another bat with my staff

With the bats dispatched one and all, Vaolu is greeted with an opportunity to catch his breath.

Roll Conviction: 3

Vaolu loses 0.25 Arcana!

Strange statue probably wants Shanks to sacrifice some blood or something to it but Shanks isn't confident enough for that so Shanks shall leave strange statue room and check out other one!

Spoiler:  Shanks The Monsters (click to show/hide)

Shanks dips out of the room and closes the door, and just in time at that - a blur of motion descending from the ceiling and the sudden sound of raspy breathing tells Shanks that the room was not, in fact, as empty as it first seemed. Whatever's in the room seems unable to open the door, although the sound of something scratching against the stone surface indicates that it's certainly trying. The other door leads to a room that finally distinguishes itself from the grey brickwork that the rest of the Tower so far has been composed of: stepping over the threshold, Shanks finds himself struck immediately by the heat and humidity of this very, very large room, sporting a high ceiling bedecked with small points of light as to resemble a night sky. The ground is covered in a thick layer of soil, and plants of every shape and size imaginable sprout from it. Shanks, being well-traveled, recognizes these plants as jungle flora. The leaves and shrubbery that stretch out in all directions make it impossible to search for the area's entrances or exits. What looks to be a somewhat traveled path leads straight out from the door, but it certainly isn't the only way to go - following the wall in either direction could perhaps prove a safer pathway.

(I don't rest a bit? Would rather not have to pay for medicine or healing cause I got hurt.)

Lenglon's response more or less covers it. Natural healing is a very slow process that will take effect only over multiple turns, although resting and medicine may accelerate it. Making healing too accessible would devalue the utility of healing magic and perks.

Isolde holds the icy throwing knife up by the blade, examining it more closely now that there's a moment.

"This might not be as valuable as I'd hoped. Wonder why I got a vision about it? Meleria, do you want it? Could... eat its iciness, or something."

"Maybe... if you don't know, it might be too dangerous."

Give Meleria the imbued throwing knife if she wants it, and grab some coin. At least enough to buy a weapon would be nice, but leave some for the others as well. And a little for our guide.

((Changed my description to be considerably less vague. Sorry if it goes against your headcanon >.>))

"Hmph. Take a bit more of the share kid." the grizzled mercenary said, looking pointedly to Isolde. Siegrid, kneels only scooping as much coin as he thinks is enough to pay for his debts and nothing more.

I'll touch Isolde's knife (on the handle) when she offers it, seeing if it reacts to me and/or if I can figure out how to access its magic, but I'm not going to actually take it unless I get a positive result from the test.
I also wait for the others to take what coins they want, since I already got magic from Isolde, but I'm not going to leave coins behind if I can help it and so I'll collect what's left over.

Spoiler: Meleria (click to show/hide)
