Title: [50.08] Squad refusing to wear their equipment

I start this thread to follow up with another one I started on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/14e0bb2/daily_df_questions_thread/jouxvkz/?context=3) but no-one found the solution to my problem so I am trying my luck here.

I just created a new 10-dwarf squad, their uniform consists of helm, gaunlets, mailshirt, breatsplate, greaves, high-boots, shield and battleaxe, all in steel. They refuse to wear it: they only wear greaves and their battleaxe. Here is a summary of the situation and of I have done so far:

I have also tried to set their schedule to "no order" with no labour enabled so that they can have free time to pick up their equipment and to follow them to see what they do. They just wander in the fortress with no job, occasionally going to the tavern or to the temple.

Here is a screenshot (https://imgur.com/a/55qD8QT) that shows the current state of their equipment. Note that each equipment is in yellow, which suggest that it is available; they just don't want to wear it. Interestingly enough they are OK with wearing greaves and a weapon.

This is very frustrating as it is my first successful fortress on this version. For information I am playing on Linux (not sure it is relevant).

Any idea about what to do? Thanks a lot!

I would try assigning a different uniform then re assigning your steel uniform.  I also let the game run for a few seconds after assigning a different uniform, to give them time to drop what they had.

Do you have other squads?  It could be possible that a dwarf from a different squad wants to update his uniform and hasn't gotten around to it yet, holding up everyone else.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried precisely that. I assigned them "no uniform" and they proceeded with equipping with various items in the fort, mostly cloth- and leather-based. Then when I reassigned the steel armour uniform they proceeded with geting naked and wear steel greaves only, as before.

yes I do. I tried to update all together but it didn't help.

really confusing!

The squad may be set to drop their equipment when "Off Duty".

You can change this in the Military Schedule screen.

Find the button saying Equip/orders only.

Click it to change it to Equip/always, then click Done editing.
