Is speciating still done alongside mutating as one action or is that two actions?

For anyone on the fence, a previous game was a lot of fun and it's very straightforward to play. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=180513.msg8423408#msg8423408)

You can still do it as per previous game.

I just refined the game, thats all. Gameplay is the exact same.

Something has to be said about all the games you start, and then abandon without notice, Magma.
Best of luck to you with this one, though. Sincerely. at least, the spec-evo stuff you seem to enjoy.

Alright, thats fair. I realise now that I just don't operate in way to run such games effectively.

Thanks for your wishes. May you find many games of your liking.

IN.

Also no giant kelp forest this time, though becoming s numerous you change the nature of a biome was funny.

Also, it's mostly other games that get abandoned from lack of players. These tend to stick around for a while. (An that last one actually finished in craziness.)

Turn 0

The Events

This is Turn 0. Nothing will happen just yet, and for the next 3 turns also.

The World

The starting location is the algea covered shallow seas that surround the Bir Island. Two smaller island can be seen on southeast and northeast of Bir Island. These islands are Eke Island and Uch Island. Each of them seem mostly flat and smooth. The ocean stretches as far as eye can see, seemingly endless.

The archipelago sits on a small marine plateau that sharply dips into an abyys. The air is warm and tropical.

Nothing else seems to be of note. The only animal species is the Tiny Dropcovy, which lives on the coastal waters of Bir.

I intentionally omitted the details on dropcovy that described its organs. It's just not necessary to describe internal organs here as you will all inherit them instead of inventing them from scratch. You can assume that it is like that of an earth fish.

Dropcovy is a descendant of Sticky Dikencovy. It lacks the simple lungs and spiny hardened skin.

Now get to speciating.

Turn 1

The Events

Nothing will happen just yet, and for the next 2 turns also.

The World

Tiny Dropcovy has experienced a small Cambrian explosion of its own. Many kinds of critters now make their home in Bir Shallows.

Otherwise, the ground is silent, the currents are calm, the weather is eternally summer, and all else is well.

Tiny Dropcovy is extinct, replaced by its many descendants.

By the way, the open ocean separates each island and their shallow coastal waters. In order to cross to suitable biomes that are not immidiately connected by proximity, I roll a dispersal dice. 20 sided, with varying requirements. This isn't immidiately useful, but will be, soon enough.

Action 1: Body gains minor acidic properties, killing any nasty parasites or bacteria that may get inside.
Action 2: Sharp flesh tendrils made of muscles/protein for long distance attacking/food gathering.
Action 3: GIGANTISM
SS Roll: Gain specialized cells and an eel like nervous system to be capable of producing potent bioelectrity. This is most commonly focused through the tendrils, but can be used at any point on the body.

I stand by that speciation is for nerds, given my complete and utter domination of Tric, who spectated like every turn last game.

And NQT, but I don’t remember what they were doing, I only remember my Shellfolk and Tric’s slime.

Actually, what were you doing NQT? I honestly can’t recall 😭

I had dozens of subspecies in multiple clades and he forgets them all! I made all the herbivores in the last game, all the fish and whales and lizards, that giant lifeship. I made the chicken-like and horse-like creatures your civilisation domesticated.

The current fish we started with in this game is a descendant of one of my pinecovidae.

The Slimes are calling, they want trademark taxes.

NQT's chart shows all slime returns to Slime. Though their number of creatures is impressive enough, the Ko-An dominated the biological game. You just went Found Magma and left after expening all the resources you could. You were a single step off the edge of extinction in multiple points, living off the success of others to compete against you.

Anyways, notquitethere had the largest amount of success due to his lineage being the most specious. But you too won in spirit, since you two attained sapience while the pinecovideae never did so.

The Events

Nothing will happen just yet, and for the next turn also.

The World

A new species of algae have evolved from neotenic algal spores have adapted to live in pelagic environments. This species in turn has spread to the other two shallow coastlines making them all habitable.

Kilgore Dropcovy is extinct due to direct competition for nesting grounds with its descendant.

I really enjoyed the knife fight arena that was occurring.
Someone needs to develop crabs and molluscs and maybe krill already.
Edit: do analogues to krill, crabs, molluscs, coral exist?

Flying Kilimis (speciated from Flying Kilgore
Action 1: Feeding habit adjusted to the consumption of free (pelagic) floating algae through its mouth and out its gills as it moves.
Action 2: migrational pattern and spawning season: prefers to live in colder waters away from shore until spawning season, where it goes to beaches to reproduce in herds.
Action 3:emergency behavior: if a herd of Kilimis is unable to make it back to its preferred spawning ground, it will instead journey to the closest land mass instead, searching for conditions most similar to its origin.
SS roll: speciate the above.

Edit: do analogues to krill, crabs, molluscs, coral exist?

No. Corals are essentially plants and will appear later on. If you try to become coral that species will fade into the background as soon as you succeed.

The rest is also no. Only animals here are the dropcovy descendants, aka you. Flying Kilimis is a loose krill analogue if you think about it though.

Also, to everyone except notquitethere: You guys better start speciating or notquitethere will take over the whole map. It doesn't matters how cool are your animals are. Things are going to get harder when the events start, and you really don't want to put all you eggs into one basket.

As is just making sure the base animal is suitable. Don't want to have to redo everything later on. Or attempt more crosspollination strats, given plants go background.

Also, you can't become lithivoric. It will break the game. You can incorporate silicon into your body as exoskeleton, however.

Turn 3

The Events

Nothing will happen now, also. But the events begin the very next turn.

The World

The split of the Fry-carrier Crushcarrier failed. And the resulting Flashy Carriercovy is too poisonous for any of the current predators to eat.

You need a specialised predator. And fast.

Genius this.
In Order Thus
SS Roll: Develop a natural neutralizer against poison. This compound works on any that eat them too, acting as an antidote.
Action 1- Speciation: Species 1 redevelops omnivore tendencies, sucking in food through their maws. Species 2 improves upon it's acidic resistance in saliva.
Action 2: The previous action is repeated upon to disperse to the Eke Shallows.
Action 3: Repeat previous, but this time to the Uch Shallows instead.

In which dispersal happens.

Speciate Spadenose Dropeel
1. Evolve to become more compressed, reducing the number and size of bones (to squeeze into smaller gaps to get to food, but also to withstand higher pressures) and send to the The Midnight Zone
2. Improve keratin brushes, enlargening mouth for more efficient brushing

Speciate Loud Pancod
1. Improve vocalisation, weaponising into a sonic snap to disorient predators and rival fish
2. Mutate hearing organ along back, giving it improved awareness and send to Eke Shallows

[SS] Speciate Grabnose Dropcod
1. Improve nose hooks, specialising in hooks to hang off the Flashy Carriercovy and descendants, using the other fishes' known toxicity as a shield against predation
2. Mutate bright pink and yellow stripes, to mimic the Flashy Carriercovy

Speciate Snapping Tullycod
1. Improve target selection/pattern recognition center in brain to better avoid eating toxic prey (or prey with markings that could indicate toxicity)
2. Mutate organ to excrete through the skin any toxins ingested

You and Librarian need to invest on deep sea adaptations first. Such as having trimethylamine N-oxide in your tissues, or compressing your anatomy.

Also, when I say speciate, I mean that you guys should spread to other habitats.

Blood_Librarian (Can you provide more details when voting? I had to fill in the gaps.)
1: Speciate Migratory Krillgore
A: Sand burrowing and send to Eke Shallows
B: Evolve deep sea adaptations and send to Midnight Zone
2: Speciate Migratory Krillgore
  A: Omnivory
  B: Get bigger
3: Extended flight to 2A
SS: ...
Yeah, sorry.
I was intending on creating a being that dwelled in the sunlight zone as a sand burrowing creature without thinking about the logistics of it.

1: Speciate Migratory Krillgore
A: Sand burrowing and send to Eke Shallows
2: Speciate Migratory Krillgore
  A: Omnivory
  B: Get bigger
3: Speciate Flying Kilgore
A: Tadpole adolescents that grow up in tidal zones.
  B:Send to Uch Shallows
SS: Assist on Action 2

my "end goal" for the Sunlight zone is to have two species , one being the Migratory Krillgore and a predator that eats the Migratory Krillgore.

Yeeeaaaaa new playah

It is pretty simple to play. You play as an evolutionary lineage, and speciate and mutate to adapt to new situations. You have four actions per turn. Just emulate the others, really, they have the gist of it.

You will need to choose where your lineage must start though, so pick a species from the existing ones to serve as your starting species. Because Tiny Dropcovy, the last common ancestor, is extinct.
Title: Re: Competitive Evolution: Season 4 | Turn 4 | (Always Open to New Players)

My advice would be to pick a base species which has a good survivability (is LC100), some extra senses or brain power, and isn't excessively specialised yet.

1. speciate from Spadenose Dropeel
a. Instead of sucking algae from the floor it instead sucks up algae from the surface
b. Change the shape from serpentine to a flat flounder-like shape to capture more sunlight
2. heat resistance
3. develop behaviuor in which the creature basks near the surface of the water
ss action: become a mixotroph(which is a living thing that consumes and photosynthesizes which is hopefully more animal than plant) by stealing chloroplasts from food.

Dude, stop speciating

That's the point of the game, however. You speciate. Sure, notquitethere is following a very aggressive playstyle, but he is doing absolutely nothing wrong. Don't worry, you can easily just claim the still vacant slots. Just don't speciate on the Bir Shallows at the moment.

Fair. Public school + weak Immune system = pain

1: Develop a larger brain, especially focused on learning to recognize predator species and making sure they don’t eat their prey.
2: Encourage movement with increased aggression and improved air boosters.
3: Improved Lightning, obviously.
SS: Bioelectricity is so potent, it enhances the nervous system and flows through the body at all times, rendering their body not habitual to any foreign influence, like parasites or various bacteria.

He can. However, all those mutations will belong to 8 new species. He can't pile at most 4 at a single species. A and B are the mutations each new species will inherit.

The Ku did in fact exploit this for massive bio-engineering. Since their's was a race fused as one with much biodiversity on it's own.
Though Magma has patched that by preventing vegetableism. So no silly 8 mutations a turn. (Maybe.)

Speciating is great, but as others have pointed out, each speciated species gets less advanced than players who just improve one animal. I'll slow down when the ecosystems are fuller.

Title: Re: Competitive Evolution: Season 4 | Turn 5 |

Turn 4

The Events

The event dices are now active.

Strength: 87 (Major)
Timeframe: 5 (Single Turn)
Temperament: 1 (Awful)

The World

An endless tropical cyclone has formed upon the archipelago. While the land is barren and therefore has no one to be affected by the storm, the inhabited waters are constantly violent. Soft algea growths are affected as they are uprooted from the rocks and the sediment which they live on. Most also don't have adaptations for uncalm waters.

-30 population malus to all species except deep sea ones, for the turn.

The storm seems never-ending, but if there was any sapient to observe it, they would see that the rapidly shifting cloud patterns were actually... repeating?

Mimicking Dropcod and Teamworker Dropbass are extinct due to outcompetition.

Action 2: Floorbug Bloodcovy grows longer fins, better able to navigate the waters.
Action 3: Floorbug Bloodcovy Speciates/
3a: Better able to derive nutrients from plantlife. Becomes more of a herbivore
3b: Develops the ability to survive deeper waters, and migrates to the Sunlight Zone.
SS: Support Basic Bloodcovy.

I change my vote from this
1.Greenback Platecod develops a larger mouth
ss: Greenback Platecod develops a larger brain for social communication
2. Greenback Platecod develops the ability to pass down chloroplasts by giving them to its eggs
3. Greenback Platecod develops a spinal cord. If it already has a spinal cord then it develops 6 bony fins
To this:
1.Greenback Platecod develops a larger mouth
ss. Greenback Platecod develops a spinal cord. If it already has a spinal cord then it develops 6 bony fins
2. Greenback Platecod develops a large sail-like structure on its back to increase surface area to expel heat and get more sunlight

Speciate Devourer Megalocod
1. Evolve thick scaly hide to protect against parasites, and move to the Uch Shallows
2. Evolve trimethylamine N-oxide tissue to withstand deep pressure, and move to the Midnight Zone

[SS] Speciate Handnose Dropcod
1. Evolve object-permanance/spatial brain center, to evolve more sophisticated grabbing behaviour
2. Improve keratin brushes into sharp plates for slicing and crunching prey, and move to Eke Shallows as a predator

Speciate Screaming Pancod
1. Reposition sonic boom organ to the rear, to allow sudden sonic blasts to propel at speed
2. Evolve Filter feeding plankton-catching mouth-brushes

Mutate Screaming Pancod #2: Evolve Migratory behaviour and move to the Sunlight Zone.

Shouldn't my species in the Eke Shallows be effectively out competing the larger herbivores since it has no predators?

1. Mutate Stabby Krillgore -- Bigger
2.Speciate Spawning Kilgore, send to Eke Shallows
2A. obligate full time cleaner Behavior, establishing a symbiotic relationship with large animals in need of parasitic removal on client species. Technically, this makes this creature the first Apex Predator of the area.
2B. Bigger, to be capable of actually eating the full size parasites, but not so big that they themselves are prime targets for parasitism.
3. Void Krillgore fins become sites for calcination to occur, gaining the precursor of a exoskeleton in the form of calcium plates across it's body. It's locomotion changes into one where it kinda sorta sieves the bottom as it drags it self along.
SS. Assist action 1

Outcompetition between prey happens when:

There is predatory pressure (the prey count in in the negative),

Or if the predatory pressure in a species is lesser than anothers.

Neither is occuring here. The parasite has no specific host; it just sticks to whatever.

Alright, thanks for letting me know. I figured smaller creatures would fair much better against parasitic elements compared to larger ones.
Title: Re: Competitive Evolution: Season 4 | Turn 5 | (Always Open to New Players)

It's mostly the opposite. Smaller creatures have less resources they can lose. Parasites want to be smaller than their targets so they have less upkeep. Hence the first thing I did was downsizing to reduce what was needed. The second thing using hosts for their young so they have a head start on life.

And the prey. Apex predator eats everything. Parasites would technically qualify, but aren't included because of it doesn't technicaly eats them, ans the rule of cool. Apex predator is something like a T-rex, or human.

Turn 5

The Events

Strength: 91
Timeframe: 6
Temperament: 7

The World

The common algea that covers all three shallows is now overshadowed by larger forms that form tough, stony trunks with the soft photosynthetic tissues on top in the form of loose strands. These flora superfically resembles anemones or palm trees.

Algea prairies are now algea forests, and the first step for lifes conquest of land has been taken. This doesn't changes things immidiately, since you just comb algea off the treetops now instead of rocks. But you can get a bit more creative now.

Tiny Dropbass, Eary Dropbass, Greater Spermsquid are extinct due to outcompetition.

ss. Speciate the above:
a: This species develops lungs
b: This species develops a digestive track for an omnivorous diet
2. The species that develops lungs develops sturdier fins for land travel, now spending most of the time on land to avoid predators and only returning to the water to feed and lay eggs.
3. The species that develops an omnivorous diet becomes smaller and starts combing larger fish for parasites and algae.

Currentsurfer Bloodcovy speciates/
CB1: Develop internal sacks of the sedative, allowing better parasitism due to a larger amount for use.
CB2: Develop a dropsack allowing ascent and descent, with the proper biology to survive deep depths. Send to Midnight Zone
Speciation: Pixie Bloodcovy develops electrical ability, able to shock nearby enemies in a single burst to incapacitate them. 1 remains in Bir Shallows, and the other moves to Eke Shallows. (This is two rolls with the same thing.)
SS Roll: Basic Bloodcovy in it's previous size increase action. Grow big and strong little one!

Handnose Dropcod
- [SS] Gigantify
- Transform keratin brushes into hard set of crushing plates for grinding up larger plant matter
- Improve plates, with set of tusks for tearing up plant matter
(The idea here is that, like an elephant, this fish will break up plants with tusks (which can also be used defensively), chomp them with bigger harder teeth, and use the nose-hand to grasp at branches.

Screaming Pancod
- Mutate corrosive spitgland for dissolving hard plant matter for ease of eating

-[1] Improve it's stinger making it able to puncture better to inject phenome altering chemicals instead.
-[2] Morph it's internal gills into lungs.
-[4] Improve it's tentacles making them more dexterous and better at crushing.(So it can easily grab alega from treetops or hold other animals.)
-[SS] Speciate the above:
--[SS1] Parastic larva clutch - Females inject their eggs into a host using it's stinger where they form into larval stage.
--[SS2] Become a predator and send to Uch Shallows.

I cant stop winning.

How thick is the atmosphere of this place, and how high is the gravity? This determines if it is possible for a meters long fish to take flight.
1A.Knifehead Whalegore: If  the conditions for flight is significantly easier then Earth baseline (EG, gravity of 0.5 G w/ 1.2+ Atmospheres or 0.8 G w/ 2+ Atmospheres), then I am going all in on giving the Whalegore significantly boosted flight capabilities to more effectively predate its primary prey, in the form of a aerodynamically effective active ornithopter-like flight capability.
1B. If the above is not true, then I will simply go for brain expansion of the brain for Cooperative cleaning behavior & social pack structure.
2. Knife Head Whalegore is a obligate carnivore with calcium based teeth & capability to digest meat more effectively.
3. Hollow Krillgore becomes crab with a radical body change to form a hexapod hydraulic based movement system. It should also change its name to Krabgore or whatever variation of you feel appropriate.
SS.Hollow Krillgore Becomes Crab with its wing fins becoming 2 limbs capable of pinching / manipulating the environment to gather food,  and can no longer feed itself without the claws specialized for the consumption of deep snow in the environment, hopefully more effectively then its competitors. Essentially evolving out of "Its mouth is covered in hairs to catch algea, which it then devours via suction from a set of internal gills" because we eat snow in this area.

Turn 6

The Events

Strength: 97 (Very Major)
Timeframe: 3 (Single Turn)
Temperament: 3 (Inconvenient)

The World

A species of virus has appeared in the oceans of the world. It specialises on targeting choloroplasts. It has quickly gained a foothold in every ecosystem that sees sunlight. The vegetation yield has dropped as a result. This will pass as the flora adapt and the pandemic becomes an endemic.

All plant populations will be down a degree for a turn.

The poison fish crisis has progressed further.

Saltmaker Bloodcovy, Constipated Bloodcovy and Spadenose Dropeel are extinct.

Bloodletting of the Poison.
Spark Bloodcovy increases in size, moving away from a parasitic lifestyle to a carnivorous one.. Shock and sedate are the standard.
Spark Bloodcovy develops a digestive system. It can now process meat within it's stomach, and better absorb nutrients in blood.
SS Roll: Spark Bloodcovy develops it's antidote into an active protection against toxin and disease. (White Blood Cells)
Speciation/Spark Bloodcovy develops in size, with a focus towards more active hunting of prey. Remain in Eke Shallows

Look guys, gonna be honest with you. Situation with poison fishies is going to go from bad to worse.

Sapience is not a very special thing. Elephants, whales and crows are also sapient. Being sapient only means that a creature has a sense of self.

But when we talk about sapience in this context, the correct term would be "sophonence". Sophonence is a whole another thing. It can only appear when these pre-requisites are fulfilled. They don't have to be all separately adapted. One can make the other automatically appear; as in, species with hands gaining high intelligence will automatically get primitive tool use.

1: High enough brainpower.
2: The ability to use this brainpower to express and exhance ideas.
3: Ability to comprehend oneself and other such abstract concepts.
4: Extensive tool use and mastery of own environment.

Carriercovies have 1 and 2, and half of the 4. If brangerlon decides to expand its brain one more time, it will go up to 4.

I really cannot guarantee what will happen after.

I will still use the word sapience for the phenomenon to not cause unnecessary nuance.

What happened to the speciated offshoot and the original ancestor species of the Hollow Krillgore? my understanding was that 2 species would've formed, one omnivorous and a predator and the other a herbivore -- with the last predator slot in competition.

1.Adapt Knifehead Whalegore to hunting large prey by adapting a cylindrical body plan with a circular flat head-- thickening it's skull into rounded, thick shape, moving the mouth and eyes  into a sort of angular shape behind the hammerhead so that it could track it's prey with front facing eyes without using them as impacting surface.  All of the adaptions so that it could stun and wound prey by slamming into it at maximum speed so that it could be ripped apart and eaten at leisure.
2. 6 new limbs developed into triple jointed, slender and long limbs ending in claws for ripping apart big prey and spearing small prey to feed into its mouth.
3. Speciate the Above into a new species
2A. Send to Uch Shallows & develop a larger brain to keep track of what it can and cannot eat. It should be smart enough to figure out that it can break open large dome structures to collect food that shouldn't be quite lethal yet if everything works out.
2B. Cusp CarrierCovy Toxin resistance, maybe just enough to eat immature specimens.
SS. Support Action 1

this has been a exciting game so far, i wonder if it'll continue.

Speciation splits a species in two. The original dissappears.

The predator failed to exist as a reuslt of the dice. There were better contenders.

[1][SS] Speciate Spireater Elecod
- Enlarged cecum gut structures specifically for breaking down exudates (resins, sap etc.) so that it can feed on all these tasty domes popping up.
- Improve brain power even more, focusing on following other herbivores and then out-eating them -> send to Eke Shallows

Mutate Lungenose Dropcod x2 (so it can follow Hexaturtles onto land and steal their eggs):
[2]- Develop lungs
[3]- Improve fin pattern to more seal-like with big tail & flippers to allow flopping on land

[4] Pearly Megalocod - create more shark-like fin pattern, focusing on speed. (It's already the biggest predator, so if it becomes faster than the others it might be able to eat more of them!)

Yeah, but I don't picture Action number 2 as fine manipulators so much as long spear-heads made like a elephant or narwhals tusk, attached to limbs designed to swing around for a lot of momentum to kill when the hammer "head" isn't applicable.
If this isn't possible, we could simplify it into a elbow joint & shoulder joint analogue and just rely on two sets of muscles to do the swing work for a bio-mechanically simpler design.
I also don't think they are not really qualify as whale-like until they're at least 2 or 2.5 meters long.

Action 2: Bigger Brain, cover tendrils in dangerous objects scavenged from the environment, like a boxer crab.

Action 3: Adapt body to be able to migrate and survive in different zones in case of a ecosystem collapse.

SS: The mind control pheromones can pair off of and enhance each other, making the overall effect greater when living in close areas. (Pheromones better in packs, not only is it a enhancement for pheromones, but a evolutionary incentive to stay in groups.)

Turn 8

The Events

Strength: 67 (Minor)
Timeframe: 19 (Four Turns)
Temperament: 2 (Bad)

The World

Minor Ice Age (4 Turns Left)

The world tempature median has suddenly dropped by 7 degrees overnight. The reason is unclear and definitely paranormal. What was an eternal spring is now an eternal autunm.

Everyone gets a decrease to their population counts as none of you have climate adaptations. It will go away when the event ends, or if you adapt to the colder climate. Larger organisms will be less effected, while smaller ones may go endangered from the drop.

Grunting Pancod, Tortoise Dropbass, Giant Bloodcovy, Sly Tullycod, Immune Spermsquid and Spawning Killgore are extinct.

Here's a quick look at one way of scoring the game (though the nice thing is, everyone can aim for different personal win conditions):

NQT: 10 species in 10 niches
TricMagic 8 species in 5 niches
Blood Librarian: 7 species in 7 niches
Flazeo25 6 species in 6 niches
Canadian Kitten 4 species in 4 niches
Crystalizedmine 4 species in 2 niches
brangerlon 2 species in 2 niches
FiveBalesOfHay 2 species in 2 niches
Knightwing 1 species in 1 niche
44/47 slots taken

(I've defined "niche" here as apex/predator/prey in each biome.)

Isn't the hard part of that plan then to outcompete other creatures in other biomes if your speciating to it, since replacing a creature harder.

But I can see somewhat now what your doing.

Your speciating Deepsea Megalocod to maintain it's predator postion while trying to get one of it's two slipts as apex, likely the spiral form has better chance if dice rolls in favor.
Title: Re: Competitive Evolution: Season 4 | Turn 9 | (Always Open to New Players)
Post by: notquitethere on September 19, 2023, 03:37:32 pm
You're right that I've got my sights on the Apex position, and rolling the dice on which of the two might have chance. But the key thing is, even if both fail, they have a good chance of making a rival species extinct. My thinking in displacement is that if I try and displace into areas where my species is more populous than the least-populous rival, then I have a good chance of displacing them (though it's not certain as creatures are adapted to the other creatures in their area). I don't think all 8 dice rolls will go my way, but spreading the risk around seems like a safer approach. Spreading the species around makes it more likely that an evolutionary branch will survive, in case a big shock makes them non-viable in any given biome.

In the last game, Knightwing also focused on one mega species, while I speciated loads and Tric speciated and then merged his creatures.

In this game I'm focusing on one overall species, with selection determining which survive and become the primary.
Parasites will never be Apex, but you can't really get rid of them

Knightwing 1 species in 1 niche
I see that Knightwing still hasn't speciated.

Is merging possible here?
Probably not easily. TricMagic's whole gimmick in the last game was cross-speciating spore stuff. He eventually merged a bunch of them into a sort of hivemind, somehow. Magma allowed other weird creative stuff like:

- a creature that was so big it became a biome
- environment-destroying civilisation
- domestication

In this game I'm focusing on one overall species, with selection determining which survive and become the primary.
Parasites will never be Apex, but you can't really get rid of them
Probably easier than trying to juggle half a dozen different branches.

1. Speciate Uchian Handfish Whalegore
1A. Secondary strikers adapted towards spearing smaller prey items as well as personal grooming
1B. Send to Eke Shallows
2. Spikey Crabcore - Bigger
3. Spikey Crabgore - Speciate
3a. Send to Eke Shallows
3b. Adapt towards shallows life, as well as eating Algae with its big wonkey claws.
SS.  Support 2. Doesnt matter if they become spider crabs or  large bodied coconut crab esqued beings I suppose. What matters is that they are basically indestructable gigabeings with very poor prospects of any predator or parasite to get at it in my opinion going to a place that has no near peer equivalent -- except for the newly introduced whalegore.

I really wanted to try for a avatar mind thing but I thought of it too late to populate it early in the evolutionary tree.

Maybe some type of big excel sheet on google could be a acceptable replacement for the turns? The frmat seems easy to replicate on the excel sheet and it might even look good.

1: Specialize the bio electricity in a way that it specifically targets the muscles and various important organs to paralyze so they die due to their heart not pumping blood or etc.

2: MOAR TOOLS, MORE SMART, EMBRACE SUPERIORITY

3: Increase muscles to flex and push in the direction where they use their air bursts, allowing for faster movement and greater agility.

SS: Fix environmental adaption.

Turn 9

The Events

Strength: 100 (Very Powerful)
Timeframe: (Single Turn)
Temperament: 5 (Convenient)

The World

Minor Ice Age (3 Turns Left)

The ground rumbles. The sea shakes. The air churns.

Clouds swirl up above. And from inside it, three strange, gigantic beings descend down into the sea and onto Bir Shallows.

It is a group of spheres colored in different shades of gray, with many long tentacles coming from under them. On their "face" are glowing lights of various shapes and amounts. On their backs are giant wings made of metal blades.

The beings start walking towards the nearest dome to test their observations. They approach a colony and take a gander around it while the lesser species either get away or stare in awe.

It was a simple coincidence when they noticed the presence of sapience in their world. But for them -and luckily for you- they see its emergence as a welcome surprise rather than something bad.

They quickly fly into the sky and dissappear after being satisfied with their research.

Who and what were these curious strangers? What were they doing here?

I think you already know.

Diegonic Cuttlecovy
Develop Oxygen filtering, able to stay on the surface for extended periods.
SS Roll: Develop slick fur to stay warm and trap heat.
Speciation: Spread to Bir Island, remain in Uch Shallows
Speciation: Spread to Eke Island, spread to Uch Island.

Taking oxygen from air or water. Hunting is done by moving from the shore into the shallows, with most time spent on beaches. No predators, so can spend time resting and socializing.

1. Lavaskin Hexturtle develops sharp teeth and does not bask nor clean other creatures. It takes bites out of other creatures(This shouldn't get rid of my chloroplasts because it has self-replenishing chloroplasts and there are other mixotrophs in the biome thus absorbing their chloroplasts)
ss. Earful Hexturtle develops a larger cerebellum(controls muscles and balance, helps movement)
2. Grazing Hexturtle speciates:

You'll likely have to restart over by choosing a existing species to branch off of.

Also you lava turtle has high chance of going extinct next turn due to low stat and all other species and turtles going to move into Bir shallows.

1a: lose sapience for more toxin

You can't lose sapience. You can adapt for different lifestyles, but you cannot lose sapience.

1b: more brain

Also, you can't get smarter than a sapient state.

While I don't know if dolphins tick 2 and 3 I do know they use tools. Considering that you consider elephants, whales, and crows sapient, I'm guessing that you consider dolphins to be too. But as you pointed out, the correct term is sophonence.

2. Increase reproductive capabilities to be akin to rabbits in order to combat extinction.

3. Slowed cell degradation for longer lifespan and longer periods of fertility in the species.

Yes, they survived the icy spell, and can simply speciate away too. But there will be a moment in which you will drain all prey and die.

You are an apex predator. Your existence depends on an abundance of prey. Any event a little bigger in scale than this single-turn cold spell will unmake you.

I suggest speciating to different niches and strata to at least preserve your evolutionary progress. So if you go extinct, you won't lose everything. Also, it will be interesting to see what sort of stuff covylossals could radiate into.

I'll note that I'm getting out of the sea to the island. Becoming Seals who spend their time on said shores for safety. (Though suppose that would be Beaching Behavior speciation.) Just gather up in masses to keep warm with their fur, completely out of reach of other predators when sleeping or resting. No more running the fish race trying to survive outside feeding times. We're going above it all.

Turn 11

The Events

Strength: 95 (Very Major Event) (uh oh)
Timeframe: 17 (Three Turns)
Temperament: 3 (Inconvenient Stuff) (could be MUCH worse)

The World

Minor Ice Age (1 Turn Left)

Moving Landmasses (3 Turns Left)

The islands are moving.

And not in a very geological timescale either. They are moving fast. An-entire-half-a-meter-in-a-single-day kind of fast. While definitely unnatural, as these movements cannot reasonably be tectonic, this has not much of a bearing on the local life. The movement of the islands are completely random. They constantly change course, never approaching eachother for a potential merge. So it is business as usual.

Underwater earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis are extremely common now and will continue to be for the next three turns. Some species will be minorly affected, some will not at all. Mainly nesting and coastal species will be subjected to its effects, while pelagic and deepsea species will carry on as if nothing has occured.

Commando Spermsquid,  Eggjector Pancod, Piranha Dropbass, The Polack, Earless Hexturtle, Deafened Hexturtle, Cleaning Killgore are extinct.

What in the world are the requirements to make the islands our home... (Other than actual life that never comes.)

It is less about the place of residence and more about the ecological niche the species occupies. Cuttlecovies eat aquatic or semiaquatic prey that eats underwater vegetation. They are bound to the shallows.

When land plants will evolve, then you can speciate a new terrestrial predator. But alas, the dice says no.

I will make land plants evolve in turn 15 though, if not earlier from the dice.

Also, what are you trying to do?

1: BETTER IMPROVISED WEAPONS, TOOL CREATION

2: Put pheromones mixed in with the eggs stinky smell, making them smell extremely unappetizing and inedible.

3: Increased power and range for mouth vaccum

SS: Able to communicate with other species (somewhat) through inventive use of pheromones and electric signals. May not work on species with vastly different and or alien biologies.

It’s me, rejoice, mere mortals. The god of Shellfolk has returned

1. Shallow Crabcore gains "intelligence" aka behaviors that make it preferable for the DomeDwellers around to find optimal for animal husbandry (doesnt rip random stuff apart for fun anymore : ( )
2.Spikey Crabgore Ultra violence: Will seek out other non Spikey Crabgore beings to "clear out" grazing space or reduce predation.
3. Speciate Spikey Crabgore (After SS action) & send to Eke Shallows
A. Reversal of Deep Water survival mechanisms to begin adaption to shallow water areas.
B. Pincers become lopsided, one is bigger and for mauling, the other is smaller and for feeding.
SS: Spikey Crabgore becomes larger.

I underestimated the extent of my Florida family’s racism.

I’m a little disappointed in them tbh, though I probably should have seen it coming.

(Just heard my uncle saying some lowkey highly racist shit and my family just agreeing was really shocking for me.)

WTH, I hope I’m not infected with the Florida brain too :(

Turn 12

The Events

Strength: 43 (Minor Event)
Timeframe: 2 (Single Turn)
Temperament: 7 (Awsome Stuff)

The World

Moving Landmasses (2 Turns Left)

The islands are still moving. Large earthquakes and tsunamis are still common occurances. But the ice age is finally over.

There is a development at Bir Shallows. Generations of tsunamis and underwater earthquakes have forced the algea spire population of the island to adapt. They have evolved to be much more durable, which comes with the advantage that they can hold their own weight on shallower, more tumulous waters. They now also have primitive root systems to hold onto their substrate. The algea spires now occur much closer to the shore.

The Landfall is ahead of schedule, and is now guaranteed to occur at Turn 14, instead of 15.

Slower Obese Scutelizard, Spoiled Scutelizard and Burrowing Krillgore are extinct.

On the bright side, this may allow me to create micro habitats for you to specialise on. Hear that Librarian, there may very well be freshwater on the islands, after all.

Meanwhile the Cuttlecovy makes a massive jump for covy kind. 6 Meters.

Developing. Greatest Diegonic Cuttlecovy adaptations.
Develop Long fins with which to sail the currents. Tentacles among the side become sailfins, making use of the currents to move. They can fold against the side when needed.
Specialize Tentacle Growths Tentacles on the bottom become specialized. Some are strong and large, meant to be used to grasp prey and move on land. Others are fine and long, meant to entangle smaller creatures and sting them. And some are meant to zap and disable.
Speciation. Developing current surfing methods to improve their speed and maneuverability. 1 Remains in Bir Shallows, other moves to The Sunlight Zone
SS Roll. A robust and efficient digestion system to get everything out of prey. No food must be underutilized for a creature of such size.

1. Bloodskin Hexturtle becomes fully carnivorous.
2. Bloodskin Hexturtle speciates:
    a. more toxin
    b. chloroplasts cover the entire back, not just the sail(the purpose of the green back is that so that they would look like a leaf). Send to Eke shallows
3. Boar Hexturtle speciates:
    a. Hearing, send to Bir Shallows
    b. Live birth
ss. Bellynest Hexturtle develops vocalizations. If they already have vocalizations, herd behaviour instead.

Tunnelmaker yarom: further language skills, becoming able to create new languages and learn new words
Speciate treehouse beaveel:
- a: grow larger and send to Bir Shallows
- b: gain green camouflage to hide among the algae
Treehouse beaveel a: build tunnels only in the less vital areas of algae spires and underneath their roots, allowing the spire to survive inhabitation
SS: Treehouse beaveel a: Designate a small group of breeding pairs for every colony, and have them release pheromones to prevent other beaveels from reproducing

Speciate Lungenose Dropseal:
A. Improve social cohesion for closer pods (perhaps a clan system)
B. Improve crushing jaw power for opening up hexturtle egg shells and domes, and send to the Bir Shallows

Speciate the Fatty Spireater - [SS]
A. Sequential hermaphroditism, to maximise egg laying by dynamically rebalancing the sex distribution (which may be skewed in any given moment by the heavy predation)
B. Massive keratin spikes from all parts, leaving it looking like a living sea-mine, skewering most feeding attempts

Speciate the Robustjaw Megalocod:
A. Give micromuscles and perfectly smooth out the scales, so that they can made to suddenly align, giving a mirror-like effect, either to dazzle when near the water surface, or to make the Megalocod more invisible in darker waters -> move to Eke Shallows
B. Evolve a new internal stomach organ, a rotting chamber, where poisonous creatures can be swallowed whole and broken down safely before moving on to the rest of its digestive system.

Speciate the Furryfin Spireater
A- Increase size even further (to continue out-eating other creatures)
B - Evolve to exude a chemical to encourage the chemoreceptive Domedwellers to build domes on its back, giving it a level of protection -> move to Bir Shallows

WOOOOOO WATER WARS INTENSIFY
I aam running out of prey animals, they keep getting pushed out of their niches, crab-core is punishing.

1. Thorny Crabgore goes all in on developing a more effective heavy lopsided claw hydraulics. It's gonna be optimized for pinching really hard, both for chopping algaic trees down and for cutting anything that can fit in it in half.
2. Uchian Handfish Whalegore develop signaling centers in their brain as well as proto-electrical receptors that override Loudspeaker Covylossal's original bioprogramming to instead offer some of it's kills to the covylossal's upon detecting the pheromonal & electrical report to hopefully garner deferred consumption from these intelligent titans.
3.Shallow Crabgore recycle negative passive behavior into mirror-neuron-like operancies: These sand grain-brained clawed beings become empathetic to the suffering of their kin, and maybe the things that it doesnt eat but coexists with.
SS. Support 2

Heavy Scutelizard
-1: Develop it's front legs into grasping clawed arms, allowing it hold stuff or to claw at others.

-2: Improve it's acid spit to become corrosive when expelled.

-3: Speciate the species below:
--3A: Make it fit removing it's heavyiness.
--3B: Develop predation and send it to Eke Shallows.

-SS: Speciate 3A species below:
-- SSA: Develop acidic blood making it hard to eat.
-- SSB: Develop acidic blood making it hard to eat and send to Uch Shallows.

1: Develop hardened insides to deal with any spiky acidic or poisonous creatures with little issue.
2: Heightened pheromone control, push the limits of what is possible and see how different pheromones can act differently in varying species.
3: Toughened outside layers to better protect the babies and to increase survival rate.
