Title: Roll to Quest: Land of the Crate.
Post by: Devastator on November 19, 2023, 02:25:27 pm
It's morning, and you see the sun rise over the end of the world, as you dip your weapon in its waters and take your last ceremonial blessings from the young priest.  All you know is that you must go on this quest, to fulfill the deal struck with the rulers of this artificial world.

You have no orders, no duties, except that you must seek the western shore.

Nobody knows how far it is or what you might face along the way.  The arc of the world reveals, rather than hides, but the lands to the west swiftly shrink into a narrow ribbon.. mountains, cities, deserts, seas, plains.. all into that thin ribbon which stretches up to become the sky.

Who are you, and what do you excel at?

(Pick a name, a description, three things you excel at, and one melee weapon.)

I'm leaving it open for a day or two longer, in case of additional applications.  They're all fine, except for this one:

>Lancelot

>Jousting
>Jousting

I need three different things.  They can't all be the same thing.  Jousting is fine with the Lance, though.

If you feel an ability is inappropriate, let me know.

Spoiler: Lancelot Charsheet (click to show/hide)

Lenglon's Ahrian.

Bonus rolls, (10)(7)(3)

Spoiler: Xin's Charsheet (click to show/hide)

As above, let me know if you feel an ability is inappropriate.  I'll start it during the weekend.  Thanks for all the interest!  If anyone drops out, I may take another player to replace them.

So, um, Ahrian has a pretty big background and all, what about everyone else?

Like, our berserker Xin seems to have some history from another game, would you be interested in sharing some of it sy? Is he from a clan with a history of rage warriors? Is it a curse he's adapted to his own purposes? something else?

Or Terinas the bear, are they a transformed human? an awakened animal? an eldritch monstrosity disguised as a bear? Were they always like this? Is the character based on Sir Bearington (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVHLNlEhdy0)? How bear-like is he and how human-ish is he?

Is Gnwbimbir going on this journey to explore? to escape the anger of a practical joke gone wrong? to earn acclaim and make the human realm recognize a gnomish homeland? Because he's fascinated by Terinas and wants to see just how much a humanoid bear can get away with? Why is his hat venomous? What kind of venom?

Is Lancelot THE Lancelot from Arthurian stories? Is he someone that read the stories and has decided to attempt to embody the person they most admire from them? Are the similarities entirely a coincidence? Where'd he learn to joust? What made him decide this is a worthy and noble quest? Does he think this is a worthy and noble quest or is it a task beneath him that has been saddled upon him by his lord?

((Dev ran a prototype for this game awhile back, through PMs; Xin was my character in that game.  Beyond that, he's just an expy of an Abyss Watcher (https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/villains/images/d/d3/Abyss_Watcher_Artwork.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width/360?cb=20220105035106), who also happens to be a dullahan because cool.  His backstory and lore was something unrelated to anything, which I wrote up at the time because I was feeling creative.  I do not feel creative now.

If you want to get roleplay or stories or whatever, say words at him IC and I'll try and come up with interesting text.  Might want to wait for Dev to properly start the game.  Or you could just assume we all meet in a tavern, I guess.))

Because nobody expects it to be.

The eclectic group heads off, accompanied by three mules.  They will be their pack animals, and aid in the long journey.  It is morning, with the great central lamps having fully opened, illuminating the Land of the Eastern Shore.  Behind them is only the great misty ocean.  Ahead is glory, adventure, and reknown.  And freedom.  For with all the world before them, there will be the perfect place for everyone.. should they manage to reach it.

As they travel, the Eastern Shore isn't the most spectacular land.  There are hills, yes, and forest, and farms, and rivers, and towns.  But there are no great cities, no great castles, no great woods, no tall mountains, no dark caves.. there is a little of everything, but none of it is the best.

Although you wouldn't notice it from the reception.  Most are glad to meet this years winners of the championship, the one group to carry the banner and to find new lands.  It is an honour, and everywhere they go, they meet kind words, good food, and cool drinks.

..Or.. almost everywhere.  Many competed for the honour.  Many failed, or were defeated, or lost their nerve and quit.  These stand out.. some are sullen, but some seem a bit malicious.  It is in one inn, nearing the western border and the Last Inn, that you see something more dangerous than a few angry individuals.  There is a group of five, who you recognize as competitors, who are hanging together in the crowded inn room, who seem up to no good.  They're whispering maliciously and they have their weapons at hand.

What do you do about this?  Or do you do anything?  Surely they won't start anything with this many witnesses..

Ahrian carefullly settled on the stool she'd dragged to the table near the wall, needing room for her tails that a chair with a back just does not provide and wanting to avoid having them anywhere near a walking area.
"So, um, I know we've been traveling a bit, but I don't think we've ever really just sat down and talked about ourselves much. Um... So, I'm Ahrian, as you... already know. Um, and my parents were traveling doctors, taught me a lot, so I'll likely be our medic on this trip and all. Um... I also know a bit of magic, uh... What about each of you? Like, are you-" she gestures towards Xin "-a trained knight?"
She quivers on the stool a bit, unsure how open her traveling companions will be to discussing themselves and their pasts.

Ahrian doesn't take action towards the competitors, simply remaining aware of them in case they try to approach her.

(Gnwbimbar set his advanced gnome bonus to jokes and storytelling when he first entered the east shore.)

If the competitors are sitting on chairs, Gnwbimbar sneaks over to them and sabotages the chairs so that they break after he sneaks away.

(Also would this combine his mischief and tinkering/crafting bonuses or just use one?)

Xin nods, a reserved grin on his face.  "Aye.  Among other things.  More importantly, I am a guide.  I've traveled the world, for... longer than most."

He starts to get up from his seat, slowly drawing his dagger as he does so.  "But right now, yes, I am necessary as a knight.  Do stay back; I would hate to harm you so soon after our first meeting."

Don't overtly pay attention to the newcomers.  Just hold the dagger subtly, waiting for them to make the first move.  As soon as they attack, or are clearly distracted, charge them and stab the leader.  Then draw the greatsword and shout for them to leave.

Ahrian doesn't take action towards the competitors, simply remaining aware of them in case they try to approach her.

(12) Wisdom

(Gnwbimbar set his advanced gnome bonus to jokes and storytelling when he first entered the east shore.)

If the competitors are sitting on chairs, Gnwbimbar sneaks over to them and sabotages the chairs so that they break after he sneaks away.

(Also would this combine his mischief and tinkering/crafting bonuses or just use one?)

(Mischief alone.  Tinkering would apply if they weren't already seated in the chairs, for instance, if you were sabotaging a chair to break under the next person who sits in it.)

(6+3, mischief, 5+4 stealth)

Terinas stands close to the group of shady individuals. She listens intently to determine their intent.

(12) Wisdom

Don't overtly pay attention to the newcomers.  Just hold the dagger subtly, waiting for them to make the first move.  As soon as they attack, or are clearly distracted, charge them and stab the leader.  Then draw the greatsword and shout for them to leave.

(2+0) Intimidation

Noodles, the purple squid-thing, wriggles right up and starts poking them with tentacles to see how they respond.

(1+1) Combat

The competitors continue to chatter.  Terinas, the bear, and Ahrian, the fox, hear well the threats in their words.  They're looking at the five of you and deciding how they're going to carve you up.  They're being quite aggressive, and quite drunk.  They're going to start a fight, unless stopped first.

Noodles slides over, carried by tentacles.  It's time to poke the metaphorical bear.  Not the literal one.  They're going to fight, may as well get the fight started.  Poke.  Poke.

A boar-faced humanoid strikes first, pulling a concealed dagger and cutting off a purple tentacle.  Noodles feels the pain, and pulls back, having lost the last foot or so. (4 vs 10+7).  There isn't much pain yet, there are many more spare tentacles to go.

The fight then breaks out.  Some of the room runs for cover, others pull their weapons, still more fight with stools and drinks, in an old fashioned classical brawl.  Of the five attackers, they all leap to their feet and charge into battle.

Save for the two who suffered from Spontaneous Chair Failure, and fell on their hindquarters, making the fight three-on-five, at least until they get back up.  (3vs6)(8+4 vs 3),(5 vs 10+5)

Terinas and Ahrian are both ready.  The fox-person is slow, though, being more used to ranged combat than melee.  Still, although there was no opening for an easy strike, her opponent hasn't reached her yet.

Terinas the bear is a different story.  The spear has a long reach, and he smashes it into the knight's side, making a serious bruise under the boar-knight's chainmail, and perhaps damaging his ribs.  One blow scored before the fight even properly starts.

There are five opponents, and a rowdy bar brawl breaking out around you.  Standing up are a boar knight with bruised ribs and chainmail, a frowning human with the Chin of Heroism, and a giant lizardman with a massive two-handed axe.  Two more are still on the floor, some kinda bird person and another human.

Gnwbimbar stealthily stings the opponent who seems to be the most distracted with his envenomed conical gnome hat.
(12 vs 4) (11+2 vs 6) (4+4)

That would be the Boar Knight, being the only one actually wounded.  It's not terribly difficult to poison someone with an open wound, bleeding from their side.  The gnome steps in deftly, applies the hat, and steps out, back into the larger chaos of the bar brawl.

"That stings! How barbaric!"

Pounce on the two prone ones and grapple them!

(8+1 (-2) vs 7 (-4) and 10+2 (-4))

The bird person recovers in time to roll away, but all that means is the kraken only has one victim, snagging the human within an excess of tentacles.  This may prove dangerous.

"Please just leave us alone."
Ahrian's tails flare upwards and then fan out around her as lights begin twinkling down their lengths, which upon reaching their tips form small bolts of flame which float there for a moment before careening towards the people assaulting herself and her teammates.
"Please!"

(3+2)(3+3)(6+3)(9)

Ahrian calls up fire from within herself within the crowded taproom, using her tails to direct the flame into a widespread attack.  This doesn't quite work.  The room is too crowded to move the cluster of tails around properly, and a bystander does the equivalent of bumping one's elbow while juggling.  Some of the bolts are dismissed, others are caught and controlled, but one lands clear on one tail, almost scorching it.  That one has to be recollected and formed anew.

There is no immediate response to her shouts.

Murder!  Go for the heavily armored boar guy first.

((I think Xin has +2 to combat, since he didn't manage to hurt anyone this round, but his action was to attack?))

(1+1 vs 2)(5-2 vs 1)

Apparently being a centuries-old undead warrior does not prevent one from having bad days.  The scabbard is stuck on the chair here, and Xin is left with an undrawn sword and a dagger being held entirely the wrong way for single-weapon combat.  This leaves him with one option, headbutting someone with literal tusks growing out of their face.

Astoundingly, this works, bashing solidly into the porcine creature's face and letting loose a surprisingly large amount of blood.  It doesn't stop the boar knight, but it does not look like a lot of fun.

Assessing the situation, it seems the giant lizardman is the biggest threat. Terinas stabs him with her spear.

(4+4 vs 3)(6 vs 10+6)

Giant axes are not the best things for parrying with.  Terinas goes for a leg stab, as the lizard creature won't be able to block low.  He lands a solid hit, but the creature is solidly built and too dumb to properly notice it yet.

Boar (4+3 vs 9+2)
Lizard (3+4 vs 7+3)
Chin (7+3 vs 2+4) (4 vs 3+10)
Bird (10+1 vs 3) (12 vs 4+5)
Down (11-4 vs 11+1) (1 vs 12+5)

Boarface moves to counterstrike.  Xin may have flubbed his sword draw, but he remains the world's most acrobatic undead, and smoothly dodges with a roll, while completing the sword draw.  Cool.  Almost as if he intended it that way.

The lizard creature decides to pick on someone his own size, aiming the axe square at the big bear.  The blow is slow and easy to push aside with a claw-hand.

Chin, being blocked by his own allies, attacks the giant bear a bit later with a sword-strike.  This hit does score and draws a trickle of blood, but little real damage is done to the massive creature.

The only one to strike a real, serious blow is the bird creature.  It leaps out, flutters over, and strikes the squid-creature in the torso with a thin blade, cutting surprisingly deep and causing a spurt of odd purple blood.  One bundle of tentacles is disabled.  Still, there are more tentacles to be had, so there has yet to be serious harm.

The downed human tries to free himself.  His technique is pretty good, and he manages to force himself away from the floor, squishing tentacles under him and moving towards more obstacles.  It isn't enough, as Noodles is no stranger to this game, and resets the grasp when the prey manages to leave the floor momentarily.  So far his armour prevents serious damage, but his time will come..

There are five opponents, and a rowdy bar brawl breaking out around you.  A boar knight, bleeding from the face and suffering a number of minor wounds, a frowning human with the Chin of Heroism, and a giant lizardman with a massive two-handed axe  The lizardman is also bleeding.  Another human is in the tender clutches of Noodles, with a bird person trying to attack the kraken to free him.

(7+4 vs 1+1)(9 vs 2+5)

The spear goes deep.  Chin-face is pieced in the torso, as the spear cuts through his armour like butter.  He's not outright dead, but that was a very serious blow.

"Haha, fools! You cannot meaningfully escape the grasp of Noodles the Great!"

Nope.  Noodles adjusts his grip on the human, but can't meaningfully add squeeze power at this point.  Too many sharp objects and too much pulling and twisting over the wooden floor.

"Stand down and you won't have to die today. Nobody gets anything out of this."
but I doubt they have the sense to back down
Again, I attempt to collect my magic, form my small balls of flame, and send them flying at the attackers that are still up, active, and aggressive

(2+3)(1+3)(6 vs 12+7)(9)

Collect fire Ahrian does, raising flame from her tails.  Sort them into balls she does not.  At a shift in weight, two balls collide with each other, enlarging and encountering a third ball.  A few moments later, her tails are afire.

Fortunately, in this crowded taproom she manages to quickly regain control and extinguish the fire, shunting it away almost immediately, only sustaining some minor, but painful, burns.

Gnwbimbar stealthily stings the opponent who seems to be the most distracted with his envenomed conical gnome hat.

Most distracted is probably Chin there, who is badly hurt and bleeding out.

(5+2 vs 12)(12+4 vs 5)

Unfortunately, there's a rather large lizard in the way, who is stumbling around enraged and having difficulty finding a target.  Large axes being swung around wildly do not create the best situation for stealthy entrances and flash steps.. although it is a great distraction.

(6+2 vs 12+2)

Blunderlizard there is also unfortunately just a little too wild and dangerous to allow another hat-strike, however distracted from rage it may be.

Rush past the boar-man, and stab the lizard in the back.  Then keep moving, hoping to make the boar hit the lizard if he tries to follow Xin.

(3+2 vs 1+2)(12 vs 6+5)
(3+3)
(9+3 vs 10+2)(9 vs 7+9)

Xin finally draws his sword, and steps on a chair to vault over the boar-man, into the rear aspect of the lizard.  He successfully pulls of a serious backstab, sinking his greatsword into what would be the kidneys of an ordinary human, causing a great gush of green blood and ichor to pour out over the floor.  His opponent staggers and falls.

Unfortunately, the vault wasn't as high or as fast as usual, and boar-guy gets a stab in return, bruising the undead warrior through his armour.

With one down and one bleeding, the others look much less enthusiastic.  Chin says "Ahh, cheese it, this ain't gonna work" and you see them beginning to run, starting with the bird creature.  One is tangled up in Noodle's limbs, however..

"Of course they leave their friend behind."
Ahrian rushes to the dying lizard, readying healing magic to attempt an emergency last-second save of the poor moron.
if he somehow wakes up:
"Shh, stay down."
Her intent is to let him leave once the fighting is over and his life is no longer in danger.

Afterwards, Ahrian stays near the edge of the room, attempting to stay within our group and out of trouble while the brawl cools down.

In the following days, she'll take her time to look after our people, making sure there's no complications from our fight and seeing what she can do for our many-legged companion's missing limbs.

(5+1vs3-1)(4)(8vs11+2)

Noodles tosses the spare human away with a flourish.  Unfortunately, nobody else is hit and the human simply skids to the floor, moderately injured.

(6+2 vs NA)

Ahrian rushes through the crowd and kneels in the pool of green blood, raising more magic and trying to get a handle on the condition of the fallen lizard.

The lizard is already dead.  Crashed due to rapid loss of blood pressure, leading to cardiac failure.  Enough missing volume to kill that way, even if the shock didn't.  The stab wound goes completely through, destroyed a kidney, cut through several other organs, perforated the intestines, and clipped the spine.  And that's not counting the previous leg wound.  When Xin stabs things they get really quite hurt.

No, Xin sees no need for a finishing blow.

The rest of them, even the injured Chin, leave in a hurry.  The boar slips on a stray banana peel, adding insult to injury to insult.  They've had enough fighting and one of them is dead.

The brawl continues for some time, so the party heads outside where it's quieter, looking at the ribbon in the sky and enjoying a round of drinks, served up by the incredibly nonchalant bartender.  Xin still holds the giant axe.  The undead warrior could use it, but it isn't better than his sword and dagger.  The air is quiet and just breezy enough to muffle the sounds from inside in the lamplit evening, with twilight slowly fading as the shades descend over the sun.

This inn is close to the edge.  It's likely the last time any of you will see this land, the many species, the challenges for the quest, the families, the ordinary farming and drinking and fighting, the merchants, the towns, the villages.. maybe even the forests and the lakes, although the sky ribbon shows that there are many places where those can be seen in advance.

(8 vs 1+2 -> 8)

Noodles is the only one who got badly hurt in the fight.  Well, as badly as a mass of vaguely squid-shaped tentacles can be, having lost a few tentacles and seemingly suffered no lasting harm from it.  Ahrian is assured they will regrow with time, although they do not seem to be progressing well at the moment.  She'll keep an eye on the injury in the days to come.

At around midday, you arrive at the barrier between lands.  In this case, it is simply a 'relatively small' earthen berm, about fifteen meters high.  Small compared to the scale of the world, of course, but a clear and obvious barrier.  The sides are covered in dirt, but they remain clear of grass, trees, and other bushes by an unknown process.  Nobody wants to live too close to the berm, of course, just to be sure.

Atop it is a full hundred meters of open ground, with a steady wind coming from behind.  You've been told that this wind is always that way here.. always blowing into the Land of the Crate, never from said land.  And on top of the ground is the namesake.  Hundreds of well-built, tightly made wooden crates, spaced evenly along the entire barrier, as far as you can see.  They vary in size, from ones about gnome-sized to ones the size of small houses, and each one is placed with geometric perfection an equal distance apart, as if each one is in the center of a grid square.

Ahead is more forest, hills, and open ground.  Unsurprisingly, you can see dots all along the open ground.  More crates, each presumably placed with similar geometric perfection, although with perhaps more distance between each one.

Push Crate: (9)
Prevent Cratepushing: (4)

Noodles manages to outmaneuver the bear, by attempting to push two crates at once.  Terinas can't manage to prevent both.  One of the smaller crates is pushed a few dozen feet from its origin.

..Nothing happens.  Noodles follows it up by tipping the crate over, but again, nothing happens.

Gnwbimbar checks if any of the crates can be opened.

They're sealed, but not terribly well.  There are a few small nails holding down the top, while the rest of the crate is nailed together tightly.  They don't open trivially, but opening one deliberately is pretty easy.

"I'll be nearby.  Don't worry.  I suspect distance may be very important within this land."

Walk to the north, passing by at least two crates.  Watch the antics of the others from a distance, and if nothing dangerous happens, walk into crateland, directly past a crate.

Nothing does indeed seem to happen.  Crateland doesn't object.. visibly, to you moving north.

Proceeding into The Land of the Crate, there is no obvious route further west, so the party follows the edge of one of the many forests, a place where they see nothing of note ahead.  Passing by, some mature trees are cut down, seeming at random, cut off just above the ground, leaving only a few stumps.  The tree cuts are very smooth and clean.  Noodles pushes a few more crates as the party moves.. and nothing continues to happen.

What changes that is nighttime.  After pitching tents, the quiet land changes.  Noises start, mostly quiet and distant, but what was once a silent land seems to come alive.. although nobody actually sees anything.  At one point, a wind starts up, with a strong breeze blowing north for only a minute or two, before ceasing for the rest of the night.  And at one point, strange lights are noticed in the distance.  At several distant locations within this land, moderately bright lights kindle and dwindle, pulsing once every minute or two.  The whole show lasts about an hour and a half before ending.

When morning comes.. not much is different.  But there are two changes noticed.  One of the crates Noodles pushed, about a hundred feet from the campsite, has been replaced by a different crate, also arranged perfectly.  Secondly, there is a single fresh stump in view, although this is less certain.

How are you going to proceed from here?  Are you going to check out one of the lights?

Empty!  They're all empty!

..It is the Land of the Crate, after all, and not the Land of the Strange and Wonderous goods.

..Still.  You'd think.

Walk to the north, passing by at least two crates.  Watch the antics of the others from a distance, and if nothing dangerous happens, walk into crateland, directly past a crate.

Xin splits up from the main party, to head around north, sticking to the ridges.  The land overall is mostly flat, but there are still some elevations.  For safety's sake he sticks to the first ridge, so the party is visible in the distance.

During the day the winds are small and irregular.  However, each night there is another wind incident.  It is never completely consistent.  Sometimes it blows north, sometimes south, sometimes east, sometimes west.  But always for about the same amount of time.  One time it is a bit stronger, when Xin camps between two particularly large crates.  Otherwise, though, there is no clear pattern.

"Hey, want to go check out those weird lights from last night?"
"I do!"

Noodles goes to check out weird lights at night.

Light Group. (Terinas, Ahrian, Noodles)

Healing (10+2+2 vs 8) (3+2 vs 6) (8+2+2 vs 6)

Noodle's injury has began to regenerate with regular care.  The tips and the suckers haven't grown in yet, but the core of the lost tentacles have regrown, although they are smooth and not yet strong.  It should only be a few more days of healing for full use to be regained.

The closest lights are a good ways away, but thankfully, the curve of the land reveals instead of hiding..  your destination is always within sight, although it is somewhat tough to judge the exact distance to any certain location.

Nevertheless, three days of travel later, the group arrives at their destination, the source of those lights.  From a distance it looked like a brown square, surrounding a large, square space in the middle with some unclear gray thing marking the bullseye.  Up close, it is a wall of crates.  They are some of the largest kind of crates, the ones nearly house-sized, and there is only about eight inches between each one, leaving very narrow alleys to squeeze through.

The wall is also only one layer of crates high, with no obvious entrances, gates, tunnels or doorways running through it, although the party hasn't made a complete circuit of it for a detailed examination.
It is simply a solid, nearly-uniform wall of crates.  There is one difference from the normal crates, though, other than their arrangement.  The wall crates seem somewhat less new and more damaged, some showing chips taken out of them and others signs of somewhat rougher handling.

Gnwbimbar scouts out the area by standing on the tallest crate (or stack of crates) that is neaby to see if there is anything interesting visible in the distance.

And also watches this happen during the night (again from on top of a tall crate/stack)

Xin opens a crate, reseals it loosely, and camps out on top of it.  The gnome picks a different crate, and with a boost from Xin, climbs on top of it to watch the undead creature during the night.

There is the usual blast of wind, but the resealed crate isn't disturbed during the night.  There is one difference, though.  After the large blast of wind, there is another, much smaller breeze in the reverse direction, about ten minutes after the main blow ends.

Gnwbimbar can't see anything, although.. if it wasn't so dark, maybe the gnome would see something?

In any case, the two of you make way back towards the main group, as they approach the strange lights.  You get close enough to make out that the wall is full of crates, while being just high enough to see inside the described square.  If something really bad happens, you should be able to see that, while still being far enough to hopefully avoid any hypothetical blast.

Try to squeeze in. If it's too tight, start piling up crates into a staircase.

(5)

Noodles is unable to squeeze through the tight gap.  Stairs it is, then, as noodles moves several smaller and medium-sized crates around to make a staircase.  He then climbs up, tentacles smoothly flowing over each other, until he's on top of the crate wall.

Try to climb up the crate wall.

With Noodle's staircase, there's no difficulty in climbing up and joining the squid-thing.

"Okay..."
Use gavity magic to make myself lightweight, then hop up atop of the wall.

Climbing would be easy with the staircase.  Well, not totally easy, given the crates mean big stairs, but..

..something could happen.  You're close to something that's active, so maybe it'd be a good idea to improve mobility.

(10+2)  You channel magic, and this time the spell goes off properly.  You're lightweight enough to jump up in a single bound.

Inside the marked square, all is flat, like the area has been smoothed out by giant rollers.  The gray area in the middle is an expanse of concrete.. and at this close, it seems like it might be slightly elevated, by about two or three feet over the rest of the ground.  Inside the square area there are four structures, strange rectangular things of about eighteen or twenty feet in height and about two hundred feet long, larger than the largest crates you've seen, but not dramatically so.  Each of these are at different facings, all facing between northwest and northeast.  The one facing most northeast can be seen inside, or at least, seen well enough inside to reveal that it the interior is hollow, shaded from the sun and too dark to make out details.

Each structure seems to be at one end of an inscribed circle, with the solid far wall near the edge, and the open end just past the center.  Each circle runs all the way around its building.

In addition to this, there are at least six wide ramps outside the four circles, leading down into the concrete.  There are probably more on the further sides, but you can't make them out from this angle.

As you are watching it for a few minutes, trying to make out more details, a noise starts.  In the gray area, a square shape becomes visible, as a large square section of concrete begins lowering into the earth.  This makes a soft rumbling.  Audible, but not as loud as you'd expect for an elevator hundreds of feet square.

"Huh. Wonder whats down there."

Watch curiously.

Two things happen.

The elevator stops rumbling after a minute.. and then resumes a minute later.  When it comes back into view, it's carrying a large six-legged metal beast-thing, about half the size of the massive crate you are on.

The second thing is that a very large flat thing comes up the ramp.  It's got six bladed assemblies at each corner which look like some kind of fans, and it's rolling up the ramp.  After arriving fully outside, it takes to the air, where a number of wheels and grapnel like tools are visible on it's underside.

..and, after the elevator stops moving, so does the noise.  These things are silent.  The flying metal thing hovers over the middle of the concrete area.  The hexa-legged metal beast is coming this way.

Terinas watches and writes down some observations on a crate
(7)

When the hex-legged thing walks just clear of the concrete area, towards your position.. about a thousand meters away, it stops.  Two panels on top of the machine start turning up, lifting to about a forty degree angle.  Inside these two blocks are many round tubes with metallic tips visible inside.

..They've got to be weapons.

Terinas, squinting, can see these weapons are separated into four groups, with a slightly thicker gap at the middle of each horizontal band.  Four possible attacks then?

Gnwbimbar watches the crate wall whilst subjecting the person closest to him to gnome humor.
I'm not taking that chance.

Noodles scrambles down the crate wall into the flat area and makes for the elevator.

Eh, nothing to worry about.  While the elevator is still down and the creature is out of sight, Noodles starts squidding towards it.  That it gets him further away from the gnome is probably just additional safety.

He does stop when the missile launchers open.  He's much closer to the hex-legged things, about halfway there, about four hundred meters.  And about the same distance away from the two who are just watching.

Xin group.

Continue heading back to the team.  If they're reached, clamber up the crate wall, and watch from nearby Ahrian.

Edit: Being the closest person to Gwybimbar, and therefore being the one subjected to his humor, respond with awful puns.  The absolute worst.

Gnwbimbar watches the crate wall whilst subjecting the person closest to him to gnome humor.

(11+3) (9) (11+2) (9)

Gnome humor, unfortunately, is mostly non-verbal.  In particular the undead being suddenly finds himself without pants.  Pants that the gnome has somehow put on top his head, over his helmet.

Fortunately, for his particular type of undead warrior, Xin is no stranger to operating normally despite wearing massive headgear.  He resolves to defend himself with puns, while refusing to acknowledge the pants on his head.

The standoff continues until the team reaches the crate wall, and climbs the stairs, joining the bear and the fox, where they see the hex-legged metal creature.  It's got the missiles open, but doesn't seem to be attacking yet.

The word 'yet' is doing work here.

Change advanced gnome bonus from jokes & storytelling to tinkering/crafting

Quickly assemble a comically large wooden mallet out of a nearby crate, and bring it to a high location.

Welp.  Jump down.  Xin will try to keep the crates interposed between him and the hexacopter.  If the gnome needs help getting to a high position, throw him.

The robot launches a first set of missiles.  Half a dozen white clouds streak through the air, turning over only a second or two after they hit the peak.  Total flight time is about four seconds, leaving very little time to react.

Noodles
Noodles is safe.  The missiles are headed towards the crate the others are on, and are leaving you alone.

Ahrian
Ahrian leaps off the crate.  The missiles have a fairly significant spread, but hopefully the leap will get her out of the blast.

(5+3) It sort of does?  Ahrian misses the center of the group, but the missiles explode well before hitting the ground.  They attack with an air shockwave, not a conventional explosion.  The pressure wave goes for Ahrian, who tries to use her magic to spacewarp out of the way.

(6+2-2) She does not manage to do so, with the pressure wave wrapping around the area of bent space and hitting her from the side or the rear.  (7 vs 4+7)  She's not badly hurt, but the impact pushes her to the ground with a nosebleed and some singed fur.

Terinas
Terinas doesn't have time to move away and chooses to tank the hit with her mass of fur and muscle.  The missiles come in, airburst directly over her, and the pressure wave slams her heavily into the crate.

(1d12+3-4) (10 vs 11+10)

She's driven off her feet and can't manage to take the blast unharmed.  The bear's bell is rung, but nothing serious is broken, except for a brief loss of breath.

WolfKey
(3+3)

Wolfkey can't manage to tinker up a gnome hammer in time, getting stuck at the 'board with nails in it' stage  When the missiles arrive, Gnwbimbir decides it would be a good idea to not be holding a board with nails in it above his face.

(1-4) (12 vs 7+8)

The gnome is likewise hurt, as the hat does not fulfill board safety requirements as a hard hat.  The gnome is stunned, but manages to avoid permanent damage, except for some bruising and a headache.

Xin
Xin, upon first seeing the missiles, decides to jump down and try to find cover.  There's no absolute cover, but kicking a crate out of the staircase provides a cubby just big enough to stuff his head in relative safety.

(7+2-2)

With his head properly secured, he has less to fear from the incoming blast than the other characters, and manages to weather it without taking damage from the.. nonlethal missiles?  Nonlethal missiles.  The others all seem to have made it without serious damage, too.

Noodles is getting pretty close to the hexapedal robot.  The others are still at a great distance from it, relatively close to the crate they used as an entry point.  The crates themselves are surprisingly intact from the blast.

If gnwbimbar is somewhat close to it, go near the hexapod robot and try to throw the plank with nails in it that was supposed to be a comically oversized wooden mallet at the hexapod robot while it tries to shoot missiles into one of the holes the missiles come out of, to try and trigger a pre-mature detetonation.

Then jump behind a crate.

The explosion must be keeping Ahrian a little bit frazzled, as she almost drops her spell.  Run away she does do more successfully, though, putting a good distance between herself and the crate wall, from outside the crate wall.

Xin does so.  You stay near the crates, although Xin does park his body above the open side of his head.  It means he can't see anything, but you're better protected now.  Xin also picks up the gnome and places Gnwbimbar on top of your little hidey-hole.. where the gnome can clearly see it and has a spot to jump to in case of another attack.

Terinas rushes to behind the creature so that it can't see her and try to make a sneak attack from there.

(11) (7)

You were not able to attack the hexapedal robot yet, but you were able to close the entire distance to it.  It's about fifteen meters away before the second missile pack lights up, getting ready to fire.

The robot pretty much ignores diplomacy.  It also ignores Noodles, even when the squid-thing is standing right next to it.  Or touching the robot.  Or poking the robot.  It seems like there's no brains inside the hexapedal bot.  The next missile rack seems to be getting ready to fire.. and the missile tips on this one are painted yellow.

The last two sets are different again.  One set has red-tipped missiles, and the final set has black-tipped ones.

I jump up and after I reach a good height flare my tails out to maximize air resistance, floating to look over the wall at the robot again, preparing to dodge in the air if a second barrage comes at me, bearing in mind the way the missles had airburst before and likely would do so again.

The second rack of missiles arc into the sky.  Noodles, literally riding the robot, gets hit by a relatively small amount of backblast.  It's still backblast from half a dozen missiles, knocking the squid-creature off the robot and onto the dirt.  Noodles is knocked about, but it's hard to hurt the extra-large squid.

(1d12-4)(10-4 = 6)

As for those on the receiving end, the missiles go up, go back down, and fly towards Xin and Gnwbimbir, who are still and around the crate.

Once again, they airburst.  This time they're packed with something other than a shockwave, though, as the air is filled with.. stuff.

(1d12+2-8)(10-8 =2)(3 vs 21)

Xin feels sandblasted, as his body is hit by extremely high-speed objects.  When he gets up again, he's surrounded by dense cotton-like plugs, scattered about the place.  He's not badly hurt, but that was a much more serious hit.  He then turns to the gnome, who..

(10 vs 15)

Is mostly okay, although he's upside down this time, presumably to protect his hat.  Still, he gets up and shakes it off.

Ahrian is unaffected, having moved further away from the target crate.

Terinas, however, is right up close and ready.  The bear was safe from the backblast, and uses the pause to get up and charges at the robot.  It does nothing.  No dodging, no shifting around, it doesn't even try to move with the blow in any way.  The bear just charges in, spear at the front, and aims at a seam between two metal plates.  There's a smash, and the robot is now dented, but as of yet it doesn't seem hindered.  Terinas than follows that up by inserting a paw into the dent and trying to literally tear the plate off.  This is partially successful, opening about a one-inch gap between plates, as the motors whirr inside the robot, keeping it in balance.  Still, it does nothing to attack the bear or dodge the blow.

(Automatic hit.) (12+4) (4 vs 5+12, 17) (7 vs 3+10, 13)

What it does do is light up the next rack of missiles.  The red-tips this time.

Light travels down the lengths of my tails while I remain drifting through the air, forming into condensed points of flame at the tips that soon shoot out in response to the red-tip missiles as I attempt to use flame magic to intercept the missiles being fired at my teammates.

You can't really throw anything at the robot from this distance.  It's short range for a multi-missile launching robot.  I will see if the throw puts you close enough to act.

But yes, your current orders are fine.

(6)(5+4) (6-2)

Sticking your head back on, fine.  Picking up yon gnome, fine.  But as you throw the gnome, you realize that the ability to throw booming spirals with footballs doesn't equate to being able to throw people properly.

Never mind.  The gnome is a clown, right?  Clowns know how to tumble.  You hurtle Gnwbimbar towards the robot, and then get on your metaphorical horse yourself, chugging away.  Xin is still long distant from the robot when the rest happens.

Quote

Gnwbimbar manages to stick the landing and fall unharmed, bouncing twice before stopping, feet on the ground, hexapedal robot not far away.  He then examines it closely, pulling out a monocle from nowhere and muttering under his breath.

(2+3)

It's a big metal box.  No style to it.  No beauty.  Just lumps of metal slapped together into a utilitarian form.  And it's way too big for proper gnome work.

Unfortunately, such utterances take up time, and Gnwbimbar is too affected by the utter depravity of this metallic creation to properly find the weak spots.  The legs, maybe?

Quote
Terinas jams her spear into the gap in an attempt to off balance it.

(Automatic hit) (10+4) (6 vs 1d12+8, 19) (10 vs 1d12+6, 7)

The spear goes in easily enough, but scatters against something inside the rent, doing little damage.  Immediate damage.  It didn't destroy the leg, but it did hit something, and it did widen the gap.  The application of more brute force works the second time, tearing the rent further and revealing some kind of rotating ball-thing deeper inside.  Slamming the spear in again causes a nasty screeching sound, something tears loose, and one of the six legs is disabled.  Metal continues to screech as the ball thing tries to rotate in a stuck manner, and blackish oily blood begins streaming out from the hole.

Quote
Steal a missile. Pluck it right out of the firing tube. It'll be fine.

(4+1)

Nope.  The missle won't come out, not even when Noodles sticks a tentacle deep into the hole.  It can be touched, and it can be shifted.. a little, twisted a bit, but there is no leverage for removing a multi-hundred pound missile from the slot from this angle.  One tentacle isn't enough to do it, clearly, and Noodles isn't quite suicidal enough to stick most of his body in front of the business end of the missile launcher.

Instead of firing again, the small ready lights illuminating the missile tubes go out, and the open racks close back into the metal.  Noodles, fortunately, withdraws his exploring tentacle before it gets caught in the edge, as the missile racks close back into the unblemished topside of the hexa-bot.  It then, with one useless leg, begins turning around and walking slowly towards the concrete square and elevator, metal continuing to screech from the disabled joint.  It is still paying no attention at all to Noodles, who is riding it, and Terinas, who caused significant harm with those last strikes.

Most of your teammates are well ahead of you, close to the hexa-bot.  You settle down and try to regain psuedo-flight, by reducing your weight.

(3+2) (9+3)  Not this time.  Ahri feels the spell misfire, shooting out behind her before she can gather and shape the energy into one effect.  It arcs up into the sky, hitting nothing but air.  While the fighting is going down, she's stuck outside the cratewall.. unless she climbs the staircase right there.

Continue to stab in the gap.

Xin: Charge at robot with greatsword

Yes.  That.  Assist the murderbear.

(Automatic hit) (4+4) (12 vs 10+12, 22) (8 vs 4+10, 14)

Stabbing in the gap doesn't seem to do much more.  The leg is disabled, and stabbing up is blocked by a fresh steel barrier with little leverage in.  Indeed, the top of the joint seems more fortified than the rest of the robot.

..But if you take out a second leg, the robot will fall, unable to continue walking.  Moving on up, Terinas stabs at the front leg, and begins tearing away a second gap, making progress.  The greasy oil/blood stuff makes this quite disgusting, but progress is being made.

(1+6)

Xin is a little late to the party, and can only manage one attack.  If he wasn't undead, he'd be huffing and puffing.  As is, he is chugging away juggling his weapons as he closes the ground less than optimally.

(2+1)

Still, he's just in time to make a sliding two-handed stab at the damaged front leg.  Unfortunately, there is a lot of oil on the ground, and the dullahan gets tangled up in the broken leg, sword coming about a foot away from scoring a hit.

(Berzerker bonus applies.  Combat now at +2.)

"I wonder where this leads!"

Continue to be a fancy hat.

Gnwbimbar resists the urge to follow it onto the elevator.

It is perhaps a good idea to not follow it on the elevator.  As it rises into position, it isn't unoccupied.  On it are two more hexabots, each slightly smaller than the missilebot.

They look dangerous.  Each one has two extra limbs out the front, ending in round thin disks which can only be buzzsaws.  Very fast, surprisingly quiet, buzzsaws.  Their legs are thinner than the heavy, chunky ones on the missilebot, but they are still metallic and look strong.  Their tops aren't smooth, with steel loops sticking out at multiple locations on top of them.

The missilebot hasn't walked onto the elevator yet.  Perhaps it's waiting for the two sawbots to get off the platform?  There's certainly space for all three of them, but proximity to the sawbots looks hazardous.
