Title: Mining, not starting *possible spoilers*
Post by: Lyrax on March 14, 2008, 10:59:00 pm
I'm trying to make adamantine into a minable resource, though uncommon.  I keep the [DEEP] tag in both the metal AND the stone, but... I keep starting out with adamantine battle axes!  I don't want the game to be easier, I just want to have small clusters of adamantine here and there, without having it become the metal ALL dwarven civilizations use exclusively for their weapons and armor.

Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do, or am I wasting my time?

I believe there is something special about dwarves that make them get equipment made out of whatever the most expensive material available is. You might want to look at what makes them different in the raws.

OK, it looks like that might be the [METAL_PREF] tag.  I'm taking it out, and we'll see how this goes.

I'm still open to other suggestions (as this should get me iron weapons to begin with), but this just might work.

[METAL_PREF], in entity_default.txt

And it's not the most expensive, it's the most powerful.

EDIT:  Ah, I see you've found it.

Thanks for the confirmation, though.

I use a metal in my mod that is stronger than steel. I don't have [deep] on the ore, but I do have [deep] on the smelted version of the metal. I haven't had it appear on dwarves. The deep tag should stop them from using it.

I confirm this. In my minerals mod, there are super-alloys that don't have an ore, but the [DEEP] tag on the metals themselves prevents them from appearing in embark lists. The [DEEP] tag is the only reason adamantine was never available to the embarking dwarves in the first place.

'k, for future reference, just so everyone knows, [METAL_PREF] doesn't actually do this.  I'm not certain what exactly it does.  Maybe it makes dwarves prefer metal in trading and in personality profiles more often.

I reinstalled the game and my mods, and put [DEEP] in all the metals that are better than steel.  That worked this time, even though it wasn't working earlier.

I believe, if a entity doesn't have the [METAL_PREF] , they can't use steel. That's why when you embark with humans they only got iron.
