A question for the modders with insight:
Do flyers need less CPU cycles for their pathfinding?
And if so, how do I teach my dwarves to fly?
-
Dwarves suffer panic attacks while off the ground. They freeze up and will starve to death in mid-air.
As far as pathfinding is concerned, I don't know. Might take more, might take less.
[FLIER]

Fliers aren't very bright either. Occasionally you'll get one that is stuck in mid air.

They don't use less CPU (and I think more instead). The main problem is that they use ground pathfinding to determine is the tile accessable and the shortest route to it.

Yea, a fortress race with flier causes the game to be neigh unplayable due to them flying upward during idle random movement behavior and getting stuck there when they can't figure out how to path back down.
In adventure mode however it seems to work alright. They don't seem to get stuck as easily and if you are playing the race you can fly up and down cliffs easily. As for the cpu load I haven't noticed a significant difference, but logically it should take up more.

I can also confirm that flier races work just fine in Adventurer; one particularly awesome town of fliers had a temple at the bottom of a 10+ z-level cliff, and a house with one support that reached to the bottom. You could watch people ascend and descend as they went on with their daily lives. It was cool.
Out of curiosity, how do flying pets work in Dwarf mode?

flying pets are ok, as I modded falcons in for my dwarves to go hunting with them.
