Title: Non-adamantine metal cloths
Post by: Mephansteras on July 08, 2008, 12:14:06 pm
So, I've been playing around with the idea of adding in some metals that use the Extract Strand ability, but aren't used in the smelter. Mostly because I'm out of spare reactions to use.

Basic idea is to let me add in some metal cloth, use the Extract ability, and actually have metal clothes in my fort. Since I never seem to want to waste my real metals on that, when I have ones that can be turned into clothing.

Anyone played around with this sort of thing? Any issues I should know about?

Only one - you need a forge to make the clothing from the cloth.

Also, you put the "thread metal" tag on the ore stone- so you could put this on maybe "Asbestosis stone" instead of, say, gold.

There are some neat options here. Gold and copper are very ductile, so they should have the option to thread. Iron notsomuch.

"Extracting strands" is nice, but ultimately you would rather have the smelter handle the threading of the metals, because "Extract strands" looks the same for any metal you have, making it hard to choose a specific one.

Probably handle it the same as mason? put a stockpile with the mats you want right next to the workshop?

Won't it be inconsistant that metal clothes rot?

They should be rusting, or corroding, or oxidizing...

The X's around an item represent wear and tear.  If you visit a fortress 10 years after you abandon it most of your metal items will be worn and damaged, if they aren't destroyed already.

It's also possible to make clothes out of armor-grade metal, that won't rot.

Simply add the [METAL] tag top the clothing items of your choice.  This has the interesting side effect of outfitting citizens with metal clothes.
