It's currently December 28th at midnight. The weather has been cold and very dry. On the night of the 27th, high winds off the coast brought a heavy snowfall, and by the morning of the 28th there will be six inches of snow on the ground.
Your character decided to hole up in his house or apartment, for reasons you decide, up until you hear the message. You cannot start together, but you can know each other if you like. There can have been no plans made between characters in advance.
Turns take place every day. You can post one turn of action per day, though conversation is free.
Healing is problematic; there are no magical medkits. Characters with medical skill can set bones and such, but during the gameplay period wounds typically won't heal enough to make a difference. If you are stabbed in the leg and it hinders your movement, you'll pretty much be stuck like that for a few days at least.

Dont think that would be too effective. though it does work on wasps, i know its cruel but when your trying to get to sleep and there a wasp in your room what else can you do.

How you're going to approach your goal (stealthy/no risks, as quickly as possible while being quiet, or full on LETS DO THIS)
At the end of the day, once everyone has posted their actions (that is, by midnight of that day), I'll put up a single results post under spoilers. Both for sparing everyone the Giant Wall of Text but also so you can avoid learning what everyone else was doing if roleplaying strikes your fancy.
One turn represents a few hours. This way we kind of keep everyone together temporally.
I'll give you a typical scene when you look out your window at midnight:
"The snow is falling steadily. You can't see farther than a block or two. Streetlights glow in the distance, and you see people shuffling around stiffly. They leave long tracks in the snow, but new snow falls in quickly. They seem scattered, and they walk with their heads down, arms at their sides. You make a quick count - there are at least three, probably ten or so in view if you're looking from an intersection."
"Across the street you see a snow-covered sedan. Inside, someone is moving around and pounding on the windows. He's been doing that for the past two days."
"The sky is a dark grey, seen through falling white snow and the amber glow of the streetlights. The electricity flickers again, for a few moments, and you hear your fridge come back on with a quiet hum."
"You've collected all your supplies in your living room in case you need to leave quickly. You heard the news a few minutes ago - a rescue! Can you recall exactly what street the Garrison was on? You don't live in that part of town, but they said it was downtown. Why didn't they just say what street it was on? And why don't they just drive a bunch of tanks through town and pick people up?!"
"You hear moaning outside. You quietly back away from the window, even though you're on a second floor. Are you going to leave now, or wait for the morning? You do have four days ..."

Your car is in a parking garage across the street. It has four levels, a stairwell, an elevator, and a few big open entrances. Each level is pretty much open to the elements but low walls prevent people from driving off the side.
Your car is on the third level (not the roof, but the topmost inside level). You've seen not only zombies shuffling around in there, but a few stray cats and dogs. Like the other cars, it has some fuel.
(I figure balance wise this is about as difficult as hotwiring a car that's sitting on the street :P

Tamir isn't currently happy. Vile creatures of the darkness has appeared in the darkness of this God-Cursed land. For a while, he thought that this was a curse to the westerner, so he didn't pile up, until one of his friend has infected.

So after reading that, decide on your next actions. Consider it to be 3 or 4 AM, so the end of your next action will be a couple hours before dawn on Day -4.
If you think I'm not quite capturing your character, feel free to PM me and let me know what kind of changes you'd like to see in behavior in the future. But what's already down is down, I spent too long writing it to change stuff now :-\
And of course, midnight (my time) Saturday will be the end of this second set of actions. So for example, Qwerty didn't post today so he was pretty much just goofing off or hiding and he didn't do anything important from midnight to now on Day -4. He can jump in and post a set of actions Saturday Jul 27th, though, and it'll happen at the same time as what you guys are going to do next. He just missed his Jul 26th post.
But if you do read more than one, you'll find out why I'm doing it like this. Also note that only two of you have met anyone else to talk with yet. But feel free to chatter or whatever, especially the people who have the opportunity to talk with their new friends.

You know, I think that more survival-based needs would be considered if it weren't for the helicopter deadline. If you just had a city that had been quarantined, then you'd have a battle of survival going on between the infected and the living. A lot of crazy stuff goes on when people don't have a way out.

oh yeah. normally if you had Skilled: Firearms, I'd give you ability to use them, appraise their effectiveness, clean them, info on which ammo goes in which guns, how to modify them if you need, etc.
in your case, your job skill lets you use riot gear effectively (so you have a little better mobility, you can put it on or take it off faster), you know how tear gas blows around in the wind, you know how to clear jams and safely use the shotgun, taser, tear gas launcher, etc. but the most important ones, that is regular maintenance and marksmanship, not so much. better than the average person, but you don't really do a lot of marksmanship training as a regular prison guard.
your light riot gear is good against light weapons fire (light pistol, shotgun pellets) though it won't prevent penetration completely. it's mainly useful against blunt and slashing weapons, in that slashing weapons tend to catch on it or fail to cut, and it's cushioned against blunt attacks. of course it's still Kevlar. it's just partial.

note that the lighter gear doesn't cover everywhere, and the helmet in the second case seems to wrap around more.
i found a picture of a guy in riot gear on a horse busting down on a guy. it was completely badass. but you couldn't get a good look at his equipment.

Just want to ask you to clarify a few things:
Where did he get:
The knifes
The trench coat
The CD player
The 15 batteries and the hand cranked recharger (is there such a thing in existance?)
The CD's
The insitution would not have his knives, as they would be sent to a police station for safe keeping. (What nut house keeps the knives of a insane person? If this was true then the guns from insane criminals would also be there, and that is just unreasonable.)
If I have missed something in your backstory (I have read it), then please tell me. Im not trying to be judgemental or mean, just fair to others as we dont want to overpower characters from the start. (Should I downgrade my character? Im not sure...) If i've offended you, i'm sorry, but i'm just saying my opinion.

The dental surgeon was jerking me around so hard I should have bought him a drink afterwards, a couple days leading up to the appointment.
I arrived at 7 AM for my appointment and found that they wanted $1200 up front, because it was "their policy". Fuck that, you can bill it like every other legitimate medical service. I walked out.
Besides, my insurance should have covered a lot more of the procedure. My dentist referred me, but I'll just have to look around on my own for someone who's associated with my dental plan.
To top it off? I wore a black felt shirt to work today, and I find out as soon as my elbows hit the desk that it's non-skid. This will cramp my style. And I forgot deoderant today.

Oh man, that reminds me of when I had a tooth pulled. It didn't sound anything like that, I didn't hear it as much as feel it in my head. I could feel the tooth grinding against the bone, and it did hurt, even though I had local anesthetic and was so doped up on nitrous oxide I felt physically ill(They overdid it, but decided I had a reaction to it, and now they won't give me any at all, and it's so much fun. Jerks.)

But an inventor is a NICE touch! Never thought of that! He needs physical support, but that is easily handled by the over-abundance of "Fighter" types.
And since he needs glasses, wouldn't that count as weak sense: sight, since he obviously has a sight problem? You can get rid of clumsy then, since he is obviously careful with the soldering iron to be able to make that stuff, otherwise he has some serious injuries to start with...

I think at first I didn't specify, but I might have later. It's on the west coast of the US. There is a larger city to the north, another to the south (along a highway), the sea to the west, and a north-south mountain range to the east. Lots of moisture, cloud cover, generally cool, with solid seasonal variation.

Some things you may have noticed-
1. She has Inept (firearms) and did not take a gun. Despite the fact that I myself am a big fan of firearms, I don't imagine a doctor that works out of a free clinic would share my opinion. I did take a number of things that should be helpful for fixing you guys, but if you think of anything I didn't I'll add it in, if that's okay with the guy running the game. I ought to get some benefit for leaving myself unarmed.
2. I mentioned Whiskey. Twice. Partly, this is because it does work as a sterilizer in a pinch (high alcohol content). Partly, I'm considering making her a mild alcoholic. She wasn't a light drinker before the outbreak, but now she's got a lot of guilt because it was mostly her fault that those patients got eaten. Partly, I like Whiskey. If you guys have a problem with the alcoholic doctor, let me know and I'll drop it. If I go ahead with it, I may make it a half-empty(full?) bottle instead, to show how she passed that time alone.
3. Rather than being a red-haired Irish firebrand, she's a red-haired Scottish firebrand. Personal preference, that's all. ;)

Shit, forgot to explain that. The idea was that despite the fact that she's brilliant and really nice, she has no idea of her own strength and is therefore overly rough with her patients (and friends ;D). I've met a *lot* of doctors like this.
Hope that cleared it up.
And about the weapon thing, there's the Hippocratic oath to consider: "Do no harm." If enough people want me to include it, I will, but I think she should be reluctant to use it. (Despite the fact that her targets are dead, they still "look" like people. This should make things hard on our doc.)
Any comments on the alcoholic thing?

As for the weak sense as a disadvantage, I kind of figured a lot of people would take it. I'm not horribly worried about game balance since this isn't going to last a year of Saturday nights and it's kind of arbitrary out of necessity. For example, people who mistakenly take only one possessions choice from Group A instead of two tend to find another gun soon after starting :P
I'll get new folks in the next update.
I've got a couple pieces of work to get done before I update Turn 9. It's a lot of writing ... I'm generally pretty close to the character limit when I post an update. Once I had to split it in half.

We have a lot of other things going on, and having a doctor who may or may not be shit-faced while she's got you open isn't going to be very helpful in the long run. I'm still going to give her some kind of psychological issue stemming from her earlier encounter, but nothing that's going to put the safety of a patient at risk.
Oh, and I wasn't letting them push me around. I did as for an opinion, and like I said, I didn't like the idea much myself, but it was just the first thing that came to mind. Staying true to the vision of the character and all that. ;D

And speaking of which, some characters haven't posted, so we could remove them. The indonesia guy for example? No offence, but he hasn't posted since turn 1, I think that its time for him to go.
I prefer that not too many people join though, even to just lighten the load on Leo, it gets very complicated trying to look after a lot of individuals after all.

Perhaps we should have a player limit or something? When in groups, other people can start playing since a group has one perception of the world which could be typed in one post instead of multiple posts, unless something specific happens to a person.
This would shorten time for waiting for new turns, so we can all enjoy the game better, not that its not great as it is. :-[

I had a game running on another site where I had to adjudicate the actions of every player in the game (14 all told), where one action could potentially cause death for everyone currently in the game. That was no fun. I got through about six updates before I had to hand it over to someone else.Jesus rick I went to that site and it made no sense. After reading a few posts on twhat the forum seemed to be about my brain vomited into my eye socets and I was forced to backspace out of there.

In related news, what should we do about Leo's abscence? I'd really like this to continue . . .
I personally say that we should give him a few days to post (he forgot to post before getting his teeth removed and has been out cold for a couple of days?). If he's not here by, say Saturday, someone else could take his place. When Leo comes back, he would of course regain his spot.
Any thoughts? I'd offer myself for as the replacement, but think that if we get that far, we should vote on it.
