Hello all, I've been away from this board for quite a while, but have returned to play LCS. (Sorry Toady, but my meager attention span usually gives out before I really get into DF! ::) ) Anyway, I was just wondering what strategies you guys prefer to use. I, of course, haven't had very much luck, but since Losing is Fun, it's not a big deal. I have tried the stealth, the recruitment, and the gung-ho methods, none of which really work all that well for me. The farthest I got so far was a game in which I had set up a few hackers and writers for the Liberal Guardian. The hackers found material for special editions, and I didn't do any raids at all. It worked quite well, but was also quite boring. ;) What strategies do you use? In almost all of my games, I lose because my founder dies. I'm starting to think that I'm sending him on raids before he's Liberal enough to handle it. ???

why dont you keep youre founder in some overly defended building with loads of guys in them and when the cops figure out you quickly transfer him to the other building?
-
I train my founder to be a super interrogator and kidnap people during dates. Given how easy interrogation is in the current release, I can turn arch-cons in three days tops once my founder is maxed out. Only agents are really tough since they sometimes know lots of interrogation. Sleepers galore! Also, your Guardian strategy is good but also remember to get a few graffiti artists and someone writing to newspapers because these are practically freebees and do help a little. I generally stay away from causing trouble because people get caught frequently doing that. During election season, I'll start commandering conservative broadcast, it's not too hard because a group with two turned radio or newspeople will produce the "best broadcast ever" and keep you from any really dangerous fights.

Hmm... Thanks for the advice. It's difficult for me to defend my Founder because inevitably, I send him out to "FIGHT EVIL" and he dies on site. Only once have I had a raid on my turf, and that was in the game with the hackers. Fortunately, I had moved them to another building, but they were not defended so they all died. I guess what I'd really like help with is, how on earth can you defend yourself? My founder always dies before getting a weapon skill up to any appreciable level... :-\

Only use your Founder to start fighting powerful enemies once he gets more Juice.
Juice apperantly can save your life.
-
Use the hacker strategy. Get everyone an AR15. Watch sieges break on a wall of lead. Note that hackers don't affect every topic so you will have to do raids and acquire sleepers.

Remember that it's better to be arrested then dead. A dead liberal is gone forever. If your arrested you might get off (especially if your working the system, sleeper judge and attorney is great, sleeper judge and ace attorney are awesome) and even if your sentenced to death or many years, you can break them out of prison. I regularly let my actively criminal liberals get arrest so they have a clean slate and I can avoid cop sieges.
Merc and CIA sieges have to be fought off however, so make sure you have a lot of liberals on site (they all get to shoot during a siege, not just six) and lots of good guns. Smg's and shotguns are good for liberals without much skill. Traps are excellent. Hide deep in your fortress until there's a bunch of bad guys who've stumbled into traps and you can tear them to pieces when they can barely defend themselves.
Body armor is good for the six that get shot at. If you have lots of cash (which is easy if you're spending lots of time laying low in between elections by just fundraising) you can have a turned vigilante or merc (non conservative mercs can also be recruited IIRC) train all the liberals at a sight but make sure you have lots of cash because this is very expensive. This isn't necessary but can help.

Okay, thanks for all the advice. One final question: Is there a way to equip liberals without making them into a squad? For now I have a "hacker squad", but it's rather unnecessary. Not a big deal, either way. I just wanna make sure my 4 hackers are well protected. (They make TONS of money with the electronic protection racket!!) ;D
-
You can always equip the liberals, then disband the squad. That's the only way to equip liberals currently.
-
how can i get hackers anyway?
-
The trick is that computers is one of the hardest skills to train cold -- you need one or two points to start using the various hacking options. Try recruiting Programmers from the Internet Cafe in the University District, then assigning them to raise money through credit card fraud. Alternatively, selecting option C for the first choice in character selection will give your founder a few points in computers (it's the one that mentions the Macintosh).
-
Can't liberals eventually pick up the basics of computers by harassing conservative websites? I'm pretty sure I taught a few guys this way when I was laying low between elections. Recruiting hackers is more effective but I find it very funny to get a bunch of messages after waiting:
"Naomi Fox has caused a scare by hacking into a CIA network!"
"Gary Buttman was arrested by the police!"
"Jesus Smith has posted nasty comments."
Yeah, that's pretty hardcore.
-
Eventually, yes, but it'll take a long time. Their skill gain is gimped if they're not actually doing it right. ;D
-
If you have someone working with them it makes it faster to raise their skill. So if you take your leader with computer skill and have him and 6 hippies work on hacking, the hippies will learn fairly fast.
-
I usually stick with one guy, my founder, until later on in the game. I train him in interrogating first, getting heaps of sleepers and then I train my stealth and disguise at sweatshops. Then I just do whatever, since my founder is invincibly hard to detect.

It's ok to "Fight Evil" with your founder, as long as you have someone who can replace him, should he/she/it perish. It's important to keep the replacement leader in a seperate location, or at least a seperate squad.
If you're really paranoid, get several replacement leader canidates, then have them turn themselves in to the cops. Place whoever defends themselves in a newly-rented apartment, and have them devote themselves to legal fundraising.
Before Jonathan fixed the bug in which mulitiple replacement leaders would take over for a dead founder, this worked even better. In that version, you'd eventually get to the point where you could rename yourself, "The Liberal Roach Squad".
