Title: Swimming up and down, buying stuff
Post by: Fossaman on January 19, 2009, 05:26:56 pm
Two questions:

What determines where you can swim up or down a z-level when in the water?

And how does one go about buying stuff? I recently tried to play as a marksdwarf, and it immediately became apparent that the main problem would be finding bolts. What stores carry them? And what's the best way to get money?

1) Having more water below you.  You know, Z-Levels.  Only oceans and underground pools are more than 1 deep.

2) Unfortunately, no merchants sell bolts (I'm pretty sure).  The only places to get more are abandoned forts or stolen off of guards/hunters.

3) You'll never actually know how much money you have, because Adventurers can't get Appraiser skill.  Expect to "lose" a lot compared to Fort Mode trading.  Goblin towers are your best bet - any random crafts laying around are good, but especially GCS silk clothes.

Or you could use that bug to have a weapon train appraisal 'till you can see value as a quick fix.

I plan on making a warrior liar with this.

I hear that's been done and you STILL don't see prices.

Appraisal doesn't seem to work in adventure mode, even if you're skilled at it.

Bolts can be purchased at weapon shops.

... Bolts can be purchased at weapon shops.

Be aware that there may be more items on a table than are displayed when you move the cursor over them; be ready to scroll the item list (or talk to the shopkeeper).

As for the first question, creatures that have to breathe start drowning one level or more underwater. I guess holding your breath isn't programmed into the game yet.

I'd assume that since you can still control yourself and survive for a bit while "drowning" you're actually holding your breath in.
