Title: Going to toilet
Post by: Proteus on April 14, 2008, 12:39:00 pm
Well, something that easily is overlooked   :D

You have a fortress full of dwarves and one should assume that with so much waste products produced by rhem there should be a way to get rid of them.
Maybe it should be implemente, a desire to go to toilet (similar to the desires to eat, sleep and so on).
There should be a latrine system (good use for the pipes   :D ) which the dwarves desire to visit if their special desire calls and, if there isnīt  a latrine in the fortress they will go to the free nature and use it as toilet 8leaving behind dwarven heaps, just klike the vomit they leave behind right now   ;) )
Such heaps could maybe even produce miasma like smells which arenīt liked by dwarves that come next to them.

Been suggested numerous times before. The consensus has always been a resounding "NO!". Basically, this would only lead to increased gameplay fruustration without any real benefits. It is enough that dwarves sleep for a month at a time, if they need to crap for two weeks, how would that improve the gameplay?

It gives an opportunity to design latrines, sewers, flush toilets, compost vats, etc. Why bother with drinking, and not just assume they have a glass with their food? It wouldn't be out of place at all in a game that tracks the blood, mud and vomit on each toe  :) .

Practically, it would be similar to a drinking or dumping zone, where the dwarves would get rid of their extraneous material in a pit, pool, area with flowing water if available, and otherwise on the ground. It would need to be kept separate from other places due to miasma, and a variety of ways could be devised by the player to solve that problem (regular flooding, deep pit, chasm, etc.)
Manuring the fields will need to be modeled anyway as soon as pets eat food. Saves potash, and indirectly the need to go outside.
And then I'm not even talking about the essential uses of urine for tanning and dying..

Or environment-friendly bio gas production!

I posted an update in the suggestion thread to add toilets (I assume this is where you sparked "interest"?) but I was thinking along the lines of a simple room with a set of single block channels and chairs placed over these.  Below these channels would be a simple single width water chute that dumps "foul" water out the end making the water less than palatable.  It really wouldn't require a lot of thought on the dungeon master, besides where to route the foul water away from water sources and building the toilets.  Truthfully, I even thought about using input water pipes and exit water pipes that work like pressure plates and trigger a one time water "flush" when the dwarf leaves the chair.  I'm pretty sure it's all possible, but how detailed you want to make it could be up to the DM.

Yep, especially for dyeing with isatis tinctoria (in medieval times before indigo came to europe) it was believed that the urine of alcohol drinking people was especially useful. Sounds like we have a great use for the waste products of our booze drinking dwarves here  :D

I think implementing this is a low priority, but the suggestion has some merit. If the livestock manures, you could use that as fertilizer. There would be a reason for creating sewers. It allows for very childish traps. It adds some realism. And last but not least, something like this is required to fulfill PowerGoal89 - DIGESTIVE TRACT LESSON.

I always assumed the dwarves were able to completely digest everything they ate a drank without having any waste, since they only eat once a season they get an awful lot of energy out of say the single strawberry they ate last spring. Though seeing "enjoyed seeing the mayor wet himself recently" in the thoughts would be amusing.
