I actually had to look up phishing to understand that article, but yeah, it looks like a pretty horrendous criminal practice.

I saw a similar news article on an offical government newspaper (http://myanmar.com/news/index.html) recently.
Gmail account stealing emails on the loose
Gmail user accounts which are used by most email users are being stolen through an email which is disguised as an account alert message with the subject "Verify your free Gmail account now !!!
Sadly, the offical government newspaper's website isn't exactly a good website, so I couldn't read any more of this.

You'd be surprised how clever some phising scams are. All it takes is 10 seconds of a hijacked major bank sign-in site to get plenty of client information. Sometimes, you don't have the time to tell the difference between Bank of America and Bank of Americ.a when the sites look exactly the same unless you're one of those freaks who checks his url bar EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I've seen fake redirected phising sites of places you don't really imagine to be hacked like some extremely obscure social networking sites catering to sadomasochistic furries (not that I ever visit those on a regular basis, oh no). The reasoning is that they take your user data from there and spam it everywhere else.
Sure, plenty of old people like your mom fall for phising, but for all you know, you could already be a victim of identity theft. They just laughed at your pathetic bank account and left you alone. ;)

Or they could have taken one penny from boatloads of bank accounts and you didn't notice. Those pennies add up, and since nobody cares about a lost penny, you could be rich without having to worry about the police knocking down the door and calling in the tanks.

Heh. This reminds me of that college student that made some awesome video and asked people to donate a penny. He managed to fund half his college with it.

It's an LCS reference. You start off with a police seige, and then eventually, the police escalate by calling in the military, the tanks, and finally begin engaging in aerial bombings.
