Title: Integrated World Creation?
Post by: vallannion on April 17, 2008, 05:32:00 pm
Currently, there are two phases to world generation, one where you create the world and then the history. Would it be at all possible to separate them and instead give us an option to run the history for X years. It would allow you to see your effects on the world and even be just entertaining in general. What this means is that when you create a world, it creates the geography then stops at year 0. You can then enter the game at year 1 or leave it for several millennia.

Thoughts, Comments?

That would be very intresting also mixed generation idea: some legends create terrain and some terrain create legends.

I don't think you could plausibly start making fortresses before some point without having to leave out features. For example, megabeasts would be in a weird state, and civs wouldn't have had time to spread.

I do think, though, that the fixed 1050 years tends to get worlds into weird states too, though. For example, that's a very long time for pocket worlds.

Well, it's already been stated that 1050 years isn't the norm any more, and ages go by what's happening in the world.   You can already 'stop the clock' when you want, I think.

It would be nice to say fast forward  100 years and see how things have changed.  Also, it could be  neat to start completely fresh with a new set of civilizations,  and see how diffferent they turn out on the same map.

The dev notes sound like everything is abstracted during generation and not fleshed out into real creatures until the final bout. If that is the case, reversing the process might be tricky.
