Title: Difficulty setting...
Post by: Percy on April 17, 2008, 10:27:00 pm
I'm not getting enough action on my fortresses! I've read in the boards and the wiki how to mod to make enemies tougher, but I think it would be neat to have a difficulty selection when creating the fortress. Maybe 'easy', 'normal', 'difficult', and 'impossible.'  :D

It's all in the fort location.

Well are you referring to supplies, or enemies? Sure, I could make a fort in the tundra or the desert... I've made fortresses in 'Untamed Wilds' and 'Terrifying' locales... where should I build to get a lot more ambushes, sieges, and beasts?

I would like perhaps 5x more enemies than I'm getting now. My dwarves need more drama.  :D

Then next human and elvish caravan that turns up, select all the goods and seize them. You'll get your drama soon enough

I have no problem with a difficulty setting... in fact I think it is a great idea.

However your dealing largely with a community that looks towards Dwarf Fortress for crippling esoteric difficulty.

Lastly a difficulty setting may end up pointless later once Goblins and other such creatures actually have to travel to your location instead of their regular "Teleportation" that they do now.

Nah; once that's done, difficult worlds are simply worlds with a larger goblin population and/or faster goblin breeders.

There was a very good thread a while ago about a SimCity-like catastrophe menu, that sounds just like what you're needing.

If I could invoke the catastrophe, somehow that seems like it would be less fun. I like having the game decide to attack (just more often).
