For extra fun, more sophisticated balls could be crafted out of metal out of various materials, with or without spikes on them.

Depends on the size, shape, and number of the spikes, the momentum of the ball, and the friction coefficient of the floor.    :p

Less distance than a round ball, to be sure, but with more grinding power.

*imagines a dwarf laying down between the spikes, having the ball safely roll over him*  ;)

Anyway, I'd be wary of the creature who survived getting run over by a round boulder.  ;)v

Something tells me that if it survived being run over, it would probably stop the boulder too. It ought to push living monsters back, dealing (huge amounts of) damage until they die, at which point their body is left behind. So if you rolled it onto a bronze colossus it'd probably stop after grinding the crap out of most of the colossus.

As for spikes... well, you could probably replace the spikes with blades and the friction would be reduced...

If you observe the tracks spiked boulders or rollers use in movies, they often have little holes bored out that the spikes socket into so it can roll freely.

Moving traps would be fun.

Make boulders roll down slopes.

Giant spring traps would be cool... sideways or upwards.
