Title: Lets play... Tropico? (Already in progress)
Post by: Gunner-Chan on April 21, 2009, 09:10:24 pm
What is this? We are gonna run a fledgling bannana republic, if we run it well or just into the ground is partially up to you guys. I started this elsewhere but I moved it here to possibly make it more active, so we have already done some stuff.

Oh, and to anyone worried about me abandoning my S3 LP for this, I am not. This is just to kill the time while I get that back up and running.

Spoiler: The back story... (click to show/hide)

Oh, just so everyone is on the same page this game has various factions. And I would like everyone to align themselves with one.

They are the Militarists, Religious, Communists, Capitalists, Intellectuals, and Environmentalists. I will also allow someone to stay neutral.

Now don't think I intended to stand around and do nothing like last time.

We have very specific goals to meet, and limited time to fill them. First, and foremost. All citizens shall join the Imperial Cult and will take extreme part in its function and faith to the extent as long as it does not interfere with their work quotas. For the Emperor needs his Tithes.

Next, we must build numerous sets of Chapels for local citizens to take part in Mass at, and the Capital City must be graced by the first High Cathedral, upon which my administration as well as any supplementary activities will be taking place.

Next up, we shall enforce the Imperial Cult in the most extreme manner. Those who do not submit to His will shall be burned at the stake. Those who not only refuse, but spout heretical nonsense shall be tortured painfully, followed by being burned at the stake.

Finally. A Militant Arm shall be established to be the Imperial Cult's sword and shield. I require one regiment of our nations grand army at our disposal to cleanse the wicked. All in this regiment shall be women.

You will be building an armory at some point right?

And goddamnit, I had stuff to do this week.  Between you and chaoticjosh, I'm on a nostalgia train that's never derailing.

Okay, lets go ahead and get started.

Alright, first order of business. Where should we begin to expand? Should we build a church? A high school? More farms? Mines? We got a lot of options.

And that girl lying by the door is the poor bastard, the soldier is the one that shot her.

Well, we're gonna need a map, a bank statement, a rundown of what you've already got, and some idea of your farming and mining possibilities.

I see a lot of drainage north of town.  Build another farm or two and start growing papayas and pineapples.

As a capitalist, I urge you to start laying the foundations for a canning industry by planting cash crops.  These crops will provide much needed money right now and provide for the industry that will springboard us into the 20th century!

Build a few houses, bars and shops to provide the people with what they need.  But we can't afford things like churches and schools yet.  We can buy God's favor later with a cathedral.  Schools will need to wait until there's a reason for people to need schooling.

pineapples.

Exactly.

Fuck schools.  Build an immigration office to employ your stock college educated women (though you probably killed the only one already), and attract educated immigrants.

Begin growing food staples. Cash crops are for the bourgeois parasites who wish to live off of others by whoring the people's land off to grow luxuries. Until we have secured a comfortable and safe livelihood for the proletariat, we cannot enrich the coffers of the oligarchy.

Alright, here is a quick overview of the Island.

And here is a quick overview of the mineral spots.

Just for reference we have three farms, two growing corn and one growing Pineapples. We also have one cheap tentament and a pub. Other than that all we have are the basics like a construction office a dock and a teamster building.

More pineapples, less corn!  Will sustenance farming give us the money to build highschools and powerplants?  We can all have fat stomachs when we grow rich selling to the gringos.  And we need churches even less then corn!

Where's the good farmland?
Title: Re: Lets play... Tropico? (Already in progress)

You can grow papayas too.  The great thing is that papayas double as meals, so you don't need corn anymore.

Yes, then remove both corn and pineapples and replace with papayas.

You will be a god.

We got some land north of the current Pineapple plantation that can support more Pineapples. But there is quite a lot of trees in the way.

Ill see about converting the corn into papayas, that could help quite a bit.

Don't listen to the papaya faction!  Pineapples are the heart of our islands future!

(I suggest that all political factions must be named after crops.  Those advocating industrialization are the Pineapple faction/Pineapplists.)

The Pineapplists call for more Pineapple farms!

Nope, anyway the farms are now set to grow Papayas. But I left our one Pineapple plantation alone. Ill now go check the workforce to see if we can support another farm.

Don't buildings cost money?  I like buildings.

If we are insisting on foodstuffs, then I suggest we go with corn, which I seem to recall grows bigger harvests.

May I suggest you at least build some farms on good pineapple land, even if they grow something besides pineapples?  Then we can switch it later when we realize we want to actually attract some wealth.

The only problem is we are a bit short on workers right now, so I should wait for some fresh immigrants. Then again I can build it and wait for them to show.

CHURCHES
YOU MUST BUILD A CHURCHES
From my limited experience, you have two choices: Build a church ASAP or bribe/arrest/kill the religious leader. On account of how religion quality drops to <20 in 10 years and all religious supporters start rebelling.
Also, you must build a logging camp. Kill two birds with one stone. And if there isn't enough workforce to support it fire all but 2 of your dockworkers.

Is there anything else growable other than papayas, pineapples, and corn?
Tobbaco (1000 per load (highest unprocessed farming price), can be processed into cigars) sugar (Practically impossible to grow (so not a cash crop), can be processed into rum (V. Profitable)) coffee (Needs high-up location)

Also, I notice that the ruins are very close to your town- Perhaps a cheap tourism industry could be set up?

Religious crybabies aren't all that scary in my experience.  Besides, that's a long way off.  Save money for investments that make money for now.

Okay then, we just continue as normal. Anyway, after thinking it over the church seemed to be a good idea.

Gonna have to hire a priest from out of the country though, as we still lack a high school.

Church done, but it seems the people want a doctor.

So we got a clinic in the works now.

Fire them.

You will do nothing of the kind!  This is why I said to build an immigration office.  Though you probably already killed the only woman on the island with an education.

One of my most successful games, there was only one person on the island who truly hated me.  He ran against me in every election until he died, then his wife took up the cause.  Why was he unhappy?  He was the leader of the Intellectualists from the start, with a college diploma, and valued a job commiserate to his education and nothing else, but from year one he was a teamster.  And every time I fired him to make him go elsewhere, he just got pissed for a while before going right back to the teamster office.  Most retarded genius on the island.
Title: Re: Lets play... Tropico? (Already in progress)
Post by: Gunner-Chan on April 22, 2009, 04:54:01 pm
No way am I firing a perfectly good soldier, sure we might have to buy a few workers here and there but we will get a school going eventually. The new Intellectual leader is also a college educated woman, so she could go to work in an Immigration office when It gets built. Ill set that up after the Clinic is built.
Title: Re: Lets play... Tropico? (Already in progress)
Post by: Gunner-Chan on April 22, 2009, 06:20:38 pm
Alright, another year and still in power. The people seem mostly content, thought not the happiest they can be it's enough for now. Russia seems pleased with us, though relations with those capitalist pigs in the white house are growing cold. We may need some housing though, as we still have some pitiful shacks in the center of town.

So what are we to do this year? The Clinic is still under construction as of right now.

Also our new priest has arrived... and he's looks like quite a whiner, I hope he keeps his mouth shut.

We are gonna need some room within a few years I think, so we will probably need to downsize the forest. Besides, a thick forest hides rebels and enemy's of the state!

(And as a note, I will fire people. Just not Soldiers, part of roleplaying paranoid and generalissimo.)

Please! Look at all that space there. The only space you need clear is the space to walk between the buildings. It's all for a greater good, people. As for the rebels, if you're competent you won't have to worry about them.

Also, no coal power plants. I'm serious here. I will not stand for it.

Edit: XD Oh my god, Santiago Rodriguez and Eva Lobo's husband are in the bar... That must be awkward... XD I can imagine the conversation. "Hey! You're the guy who's wife I had to gun down!" "You son of a bitch!"

Okay, now we have a working Immigrations office, a fully staffed Church and clinic, another Tentament for the people, and some free housing for the less fortunate on the way.

Soon, right now there isn't too much of a rush as we are getting a fair amount of skilled Immigrants. It's either that or more entertainment next. Road building somewhere in there.

This is the situation right now.

The free housing is done, and some houses for the more fortunate have been constructed. It was a slow year for the crops this time though, so we need to wait a bit and let our treasury grow a bit.

Hmm... I just got a letter from Alvaro Duran, he thinks we need more soldiers... I think I agree.

Tragedy has struck.

The leader of the Communist faction, Julie Brown has died. The cause of death seems to be cancer. She was 49.

Fucking duh. But to be honest a lumber industry could get us out of the little slump the slow harvest left us in last year.

Okay, so, I assume either that was me, my best friend ever, or I was sleeping with her or something like that.

This is based in the Caribbean, after all.

Anyway, you know what causes cancer? Pollution. Pollution from the factories of capitalist pigs who skin and devour the proletariat to stoke the furnaces of their mighty engines of sorrow. This was an assassination, comrades! Someone wanted Comrade Brown out of the way, so they gave her cancer!

Some... Capitalist pig killed her.

Edit: Damn, Okenido beat me to it.

I would never hurt her!  Tropical Latina communist barkeepers are far too smexy to kill!

Clearly, she died of cancer from all those papaya's nearby.  We must fight the cancer threat plaguing our society.  And that means we must build a tourism industry.  Instead of laboring in the hot fields, we should pass our times in recreation.  And we should build a nightclub named in honor of the lovely departed.

Our trained killer, Santiago Rodriguez moves as fast as he can. He doesn't want to displease the Generalissimo.

He takes aim through a window, Mainiac almost gets a chance to scream... But the round strikes him in the lung first.

Trying to get help, being defiant to the very end, he expires of his wound before he can reach the door. His efforts were in vain. Not only didn't he make it, the head doctor of the clinic is a die-hard Militarist.

Paranoia and guilt for killing those who meant you no harm will make you an alcoholic easily enough.

Carpet-bombed. You'll know that you're close to an invasion where the superpower sends in a gunboat.

Alliance with the Soviets also give you FREE MONEY! Do it. We need the money. All you have to do is just make sure to not upset the Communists that much, and keep relations stable with the USSR.

Oh, and Sniper Joe, what is your dictator's profile?

Yeah, but Tropico doesn't work that way.

America will invade any time if you piss them off, especially if there's an American military base present (need to defend it).  But if there's a Russian base on the island, they can't do squat (no Kennedy's in this game).

Because your island is so far away, Russia will only ever invade if you already have a Russian military base to protect and then manage to piss them off somehow.

The army of Tropico welcomes our outstanding new recruit!  Surely with a such a lineage, El Familia de Rodriguez will achieve many great victories over the Capitalist dogs.

How old is he anyway?  I bet he just got out of highschool, so he's probably like 15.

I am not happy, друг. The people, they experience what we in the fatherland call "Wage disparity". It is important that you make the capitalist scum from washington feel as unwelcome as possible, yah?

And your farms. Are there not better things to grow, comrade? Your people need food, друг. Is it not a good idea to give them this? Do you not feel the pain of the people, you Нечувствительный рывок?

The Генералитет бака олова of yours does not truly see the issue at stake here. How can you think of material goods with such an unfair wage problem? We cannot think of record players for the people when they do not all get papaya. Sell the last of your strange fruit, and grow good, organic, natural things, like potatoes. All potatoes are the same, and nobody goes hungry. Plus, there is always Водочка.

And what of the education Tropico provides? It will only serve to instill capitalist notions in the people! Give the people a good, solid education, and teach them to be god-fearing. It would be as God intended.

Do the people a favor, приятель, and "Fix" the wages. Tell the stuck up bitch in her clinic that she can be paid as like a farmer. Incidentally, comrade, how's your head? That was quite a show you put on last night. The lamp is salvageable, ya?

His first son, Placiado Rodriguez is 18, his other son on currently attending highschool is 16, and his youngest Joseph Rodriguez (I did NOT intervene! They named him that themselves!) is 12.

On another note I noticed students were forced to live in shacks... So I enacted a social security bill, they will now receive enough money to live in the Tentaments.

In a surprising turn of events, one of our soldiers has died.

Bob Macpherson was a fine soldier, but he never could give up the cigars. And after being unable to treat his ever growing problems with his lungs he died today.

On another note, it's time to decide if we should hold elections this year. The people seem to support us but it's still up to us to decide if we should go through with them.

Old grudges die... Hard.

Today, with no warning "Presedente'" Sniper Joe brutally ordered the killings of two innocent citizens. Marguita Mainiac aged 65, and Javier Mainiac aged 28. The Mainiac family had been at odds with Sniper Joe ever since he muscled his way onto our island, and one of Sniper Joe's own goose steppers even killed Minister Mainiac only a few years ago.

Is this what we voted for? Killings in our streets? In broad daylight? I for one think we should have another election this year!

Just checking: You have set the high school to military education, right?
Also, if you can afford it, get the literacy program.
How happy are the people? If their food is <70, and you claim to export so much food, mayhaps you should consider food for the people, hmmn? Comrade?
Got a high school? Excellent. Proceed to build both a lumber mill and a cannery.
Also, you should have cheated on that election... seriously. Now the democracy expectations will be through the roof! Next thing you know they'll expect elections every five years! And fair ones too!

Title: Re: Lets play... Tropico? (Already in progress)

Just armories and guard towers, and he's already got those.

For reference, they determine how big your military force can be.  Armories employ/supply up to three Generals each.  The Palace employs/supplies four Soldiers, Guard Towers three Soldiers each.  But you can only build as many Towers as you have Generals.  You can also build Jails and Police Stations - police lower crime and arrest protesters, instead of having to let your soldiers just kill them.

When you really piss people off for a long time, some people will run off to the woods to become Rebels.  I've only seen it happen a few times, but Rebels occasionally launch attacks against your military buildings, and your soldiers will rush in to defend them.  If you get a whole lot of unhappy people and Rebels, mobs will storm the Palace.

Don't forget the Army base and Colonial fort in Dungeon mode. Anyway, off to do some stuff but I will take these suggestions into account when I get back to run this thing.

The Army base doesn't actually do anything except take up space.  I don't have the expansions, so I have no idea how the dungeon works.

I had a bitch of a time making this work on my comp.  Apparently, both my stock DVD drive, and my external DVD drive can read the CD well enough for the game to be installed, but not enough for the CD to register as in the drive so the game can run.  Had to resort to reinstalling my old CD burner.

I mean the Army base that the player can build, it houses soldiers and their familys in a VERY nice enviroment for them with free food, medical treatment, and religion all in one place. It gives off a bunch of government control and works as an armory too (Alongside allowing 2 military based edicts). The Dungeon is a super prison staffed by soldiers, anyone who goes in comes out a loyal little sheep or dies in the process. Yeah these are both from the "Paradise Island" Expansion, along with the social security edict I passed a while back.

and i see you are still selling logs. LOGS! lumber mill to cut them! we need it now! it will increase money greatly. even better if you start making furniture!

you have a school, and that leads to educated people who want to have a job where what they studied is needed. industry is that!

also, i see you have many buildings that needs univerist people, but there is no university! how much do you want to spend to buy them all? and what happens when they die or retire?

university will be cheaper at the end.. build it
