Title: Let's play Civilization (IV, beyond the sword)
Post by: NUKE9.13 on May 10, 2009, 09:27:27 am
Yes let us do that.

Civilization, for those who do not know, is a turn-based strategy game where you guide your civilization to victory. It is very complicated, although it has a shallow learning curve- anyone can win with settler difficulty.
However, we shall not be playing settler difficulty. Nor shall we be playing normal civilization. For I have tinkered with the game speeds to make my games a little more action-packed. (Cheap units, expensive techs, medium everything else) The timescale will be epic (1.5 times normal), the difficulty noble (no handicap for AI or player). The terrain will be tectonic, normal settings, large. (Vaguely resembles an actual planet, clumped resources. Continents typically contain 2-4 civilizations)
The civilization, you chose, although I recommend an aggresive or charismatic leader, as warfare is somewhat a requirement with my modifications. For a list of civilisations and their stats, see http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/info/civilizations/

This sounds very interesting!

Choose the Indians, for we will take our revenge by driving the white man out of their homes! Our imperialism will be great and ironic.

Ghandi!  For the hilarious historic reversal, and a special unit that you build immediately but stays useful throughout the game.

By popular vote, we shall play as Ghandi Bloodletter, terror of the peaceful world. I shall start directly.
Let's do this thing!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
So... choose a tech, and the future production of (Temporarily Bay12)- workers, to mine the gold? Settlers, for a quick expansion? Barracks, for better units? Warriors, to explore? Monuments, for- no way am I building a monument in the capital. Also, we have a free warrior, and barbarians won't attack until we discover some more techs, so he should probably go exploring. But where? North, east, or south?
Also, feel free to ask about anything you don't understand.

Nah, let's plan for the long term. Go for one of the religious technologies so that we get a holy city. After all, the barbarians won't attack just yet.

You should rename your capital Boatmurdered, because of the elephants across the river and the fact that it's built in a jungle. Forest. Whatever. If only there was an 'elephant rampage' game event...

Onwards! In this update:
Meet the spanish.
Spanish found buddhism
We found hinduism
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
State of the empire:
To the north, the land narrows, and then the Spanish capital blocks further exploration. I don't know if the land continues, or if the spanish are on a peninsula. To the south, the land becomes jungle, ending by a small straight. There is dye there. To the east, a mountain range, unexplored as of yet.
We only have Boatmurdered, our capital. We have four warriors, one of which who is defending the capital.
We have aprox 200 gold in the treasury, as all three tribal villages gave us gold. We have no expenses, with 100% of income going to research.

What now?

As before, feel free to query about anything.

Cut the science budget to 90%, so we get an income.
Title: Re: Let's play Civilization (IV, beyond the sword)
Post by: mainiac on May 12, 2009, 01:50:54 pm
No, with that kind of treasury there's no need for a positive budget, keep investing full pace in science.  Fishing is good for the food bonus w/ your clams (you might even want to buy a fishing boat to get it even faster) but you need to exploit your fast workers, which require land upgrades.  I suggest making a be-line for whatever will let you mine those shiny hills nearby.

Wait, when you say that Isabella hates heresy, does that mean she hates people who believe in her religion but have a different Holy City so to gain more beniefts? If that is so, you shouldn't worry about her. You're an infidel, not a heretic.

gold mine will speed up research much, after you start using that tile.

Dude, this is Isabella I of freaking Spain. I don't think she's going to be inclined to split hairs. Her inquisitors would only be too happy to split various other body parts, though.

Right then. Current plan is:
Research: Fishing, Animal domestication (which requires farming)
(We can't even see horses yet, the wheel will not give us chariots.)
Other stuff: Gold rush.

We'll need gold to become Jewish.

For the research generation of course.

I'd recommend Bronze Working so you can break out the whip. And chop woods. And and and.

After fishing o'course. Also remember to build a worker. Can't underestimate an early worker.

Right, well, hang on.
I have played, I'm just having a little trouble with the images. However, here is the update in text, I'll get the images up asap.

First: We fight a lion. We win, huzzah. The warrior is upped to combat 1 (+10% strength)
After that: I discover that we are in fact on a small banana shaped island:
Spoiler: Map (click to show/hide)
And the only hypothetical way out is via Isabella. In order to cap her growth, I declare war on her, killing her exploring warrior with our own combat 1 warrior (who I upgrade to shock (+25% combat versus melee)) Another warrior marches into Isabella's territory, revealing that she rests against the north pole, pillages her farms, and prevents her worker from doing anything. She is stuck.
Meanwhile, we research fishing, the fast worker is completed, and we make our gold mine, which we put to good use in researching archery (for the edge versus Isabella)
We also build a barracks in Boatmurdered.
We now need more tech choices, and strategy. Currently our three available warriors are on their way to blockade Isabella's single city. Isabella's city is surrounded by woods, so she can't break out with her own warriors. Alas, we can't break in either. 1% odds.
For techs, I recommend bronze working, so that we can finish Isabella quickly. And also chop forests.
Strategy: Build a settler, and make a new city dedicated to the war effort, churning out warriors faster than Isabella can. Then Boatmurdered can continue with research and such unhindered.

Axemen are definitely good if they're still using warriors, but won't they get archers soon?
Title: Re: Let's play Civilization (IV, beyond the sword)
Post by: Errol on May 14, 2009, 01:31:20 pm
Actually archers suck. And axemen are quite OK to good against archers in a city. Especially if they have cover.

So yeah, I'd advise you go for iron working. If this ain't giving you the edge nothing will.

Coming from a player who can win at emperor difficulty.

Spam axemen.  It's the only way.

Hey Nuke, you mind if I post a question for Civ4 technical help?  kthnx

I wanted to play Fury Road again, so I installed Civ4, Warlords, and Beyond the Sword.  Then Fury Road would crash on starting, for some reason I can't remember.  For a moment, I thought having Warlords installed might have been interfering, so I uninstalled it.  Now Civ4 and BtS won't even load, because they can't initialize Python.  Anyone know how to fix that?

Uninstall everything, reinstall only vanilla and BTS. Try again. I dunno.
Civfanatics probably has a dozen threads about it, with the exact solution.

Coming from a player who can win at emperor difficulty.
Ooh, me too. Enter world builder and give yourself gunships. :P
But seriously, I play civilization for fun. I don't want to have to think ahead a hundred turns about every decision, and micromanage every city.
But to be honest I don't think I could even if I wanted too, so good on you.

I can't even win at warlord difficulty. (Well I dunno If I can, I always lose a city get pissed off and start a new game on chieftain where I can for the most part enjoy the game without having to fight for my life.)

Neither can I, at that point the game cheats with a passion. I usualy just get pissed off that everybody can somehow make a epic army and culture. Not to mention each of them is about 3x the size of my country about 30 turns in. Then I just curse at the game and make a promise not to play it ever again.

Of course that only lasts until I mod the game to start with SAM infantry that turns whatever it kills into wolves, and then my faith is restored.

Warlord is the worst of the difficulties, in my mind. The AI is either dumbass retarded or a class A genius. But I usually take em down at warlord no bother, on account of how once you get to the middle ages you're ahead by a couple of techs and soon you're pwning their archers with knights and musketeers. Viva la handicap.

Aaanyway, current strategy is go bronze working (and if possbible iron working) and spam metal-clad units to go kill Isabella.
I'll get right to it. In a few hours. If you have any suggestions make them now.
