Hey bay12, I've been looking for a good MUD to kill a bit of time with and so far i haven't found many that have caught my attention. The kind of MUD im looking for should have;
Crafting
Good RP
A respectably sized player base
Realistic combat
A good sized game world
And it should be pretty feature rich
-
Firan - Has just about everything you listed, but it's a MUX, I believe. Takes some getting used to.
Armageddon - Very, very steep learning curve here. Expect to die a lot.
The Inquisition - Smaller playerbase... 10-20 on average primetime. It's also pretty under construction, but it's good.
-
If you want a completely 400% NSFW one, there's HellMOO. Be warned, there's rape, suicide bombers, urine and fecal matter, nukes, various holy symbols and figures being desecrated; just about anything you could imagine being wrong is in there. A lot more that I won't even mention on a board like this.
Combat is fairly simple, but fun. I really don't know if it counts as good RP, though, depends on your definition of RP, lol.
-
Speaking of realistic combat, is there any MU* out there that does not rely on simple HPs? Like uses something similar to Dwarf Fortress or Unreal World?
-
God Wars II has advanced combat, nothing else :P I don't recall a game that doesn't rely on HP. HellMOO has breaking arms, legs, getting concussions ala Fallout, but still uses HP. I think it's a codebase thing; a lot of the MUDs redoing old code don't change it.
-
Hmm. If you will forgive me some self promotion ;)
You might enjoy the MUD I imm at, mirrorsmud.net, 2222, especially if you have read any of the Wheel of Time books.
Actually, the player population is still relatively small at the moment, but we have a group of really dedicated people working towards an end of year fire-up (including a very experienced coder ;D)
It's been in production for quite a number of years now (ten!), and things are finally starting to get the point of offering a good gaming experience.
Some features...
massive world size, cities are hundreds of rooms each (all unique)
RP is encouraged, PK is supported
three races, more to come
content is true to the books
some combat code that is really coming along
ditto channeling (magic)
crafting in the works
I'm hardly a non-biased source of opinion on this, but I think its got a lot to offer the player looking for something different. We aren't trying to actively build up the community just yet, but it is getting close to that point. We are a bit of an insane bunch when it comes to detail. Maybe DF players will appreciate that. hehe.
Anyway, put it in your bookmark and keep an eye on it and you won't be disappointed.

Yolan... link/port? :P

Hey bay12, I've been looking for a good MUD to kill a bit of time with and so far i haven't found many that have caught my attention.
And with high expectations like those, you never will. ::)
-
I was under the impression that all you had to do to RP was have a fertile imagination, understand what was socially acceptable and what was not when doing so, and of course following certain rules that go along with whatever game your playing that involves mentioned RPing.
It seems like MUDs are straightforward things, sure you'll die alot, but people die when your not GODLY, which is of course a general rule when playing games like that.
Just chalk it up to experience, and send in another new blood for the grinder for whatever game your playing.
Armageddon sounds exactly like what I'm looking for.
-
RP is like permanent death... it only works if everyone else is doing it :P
-
I remember there was a DF mud under development, is it still going?
-
Nope.
Oh and submitted a character to Armageddon. I expect it to get rejected, simply because I probably failed to understand some of the formatting, as I have NEVER played in a MUD before.
If it actually gets in, I'll make it a goal to have some form of hilarity ensue before I get killed randomly with impunity.

Yep. (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=31865.0)
It is coming along very well too.

Wait, a MUD is an RP?
-
It heavily involves RP. But no it isn't. Theres game mechanics, and that'll be the tough part of getting used to.
-
Thanks guys, i got into FiranMUX and tried armageddon but I gave up on trying to get in.
-
I really got into Firan after seeing it here, playing Avento there.
-
I hate, hate, hate, not getting into a mush...makes me feel sooo low. >:(
-
Armageddon is incredibly disorienting to the point where I spent about 3 hours figuring out how to get myself an axe and then find a tree I could cut ;D I like it.
I'm thinking about Firan since I already have friends there
EDIT: Okay, grabbed a nice character on Firan ..my Armageddon character is dead from poison. And that's a fight I /won/ XD

I recommend Imperian (http://www.imperian.com/).
Taken straight from the home page:
Why should you play Imperian?
Seventeen different guilds with unique skills and abilities to help define your character and set it apart from any other person on the game.
Dozens of player-run clans and bloodlines allowing you easy communication and further character development.
Hundreds of players with which to interact, with nearly 200 players online during our peak times.
Intense player on player combat unlike any other game in existence.
Over 1000 different abilities within more than 50 skills. From innumerable combat styles and "flavors" of magick to the creation of food and clothing, you will find it and more here.
Constant development, interaction, and roleplaying opportunities created with our full time and volunteer staff.

I tried Imperian and did'nt like it too much, I'll give it another go though.

I don't have much experience with MUD's but there was a Wheel of Time themed one that I used to love to play, at http://www.wotmud.org/. I haven't played it for a while, so I don't know if there have been many changes since I last played, but it was quite fun. Channeler class was the most fun to play as, but really easy to die as one, esp if you go around telling everyone you meet that you are one, in which case Whitecloaks/Aes Sedai will hunt you down, kill you, and take your scalp. Alot of PvP, at least it seemed whenever I was playing. There's some sort of informal rule not to attack anyone below level 20, but regardless, I wouldn't recommend trying to chat it up with every shadowspawn you see, especially if you are walking around with good equipment.

My favorite is http://www.retromud.org/ . Not much for PVPers outside of occasional no-death-penalty war arenas, no RP enforced at all, but a whole ton of races and classes, more than just about any other mud out there. My characters include a werewolf abjurer (spiritual protection path, with minor Aikido skills too, not much healing or damage at all) who can also bite the heck out of people, and is also a shaman with a lot of neat flavor spells, transformation stuffs... And a satyr mage girl who's currently a geomancer with a little bit of telemancer (disintegration and stone damage spells, gemcutting, slinging skills, etc) but who's shortly reincarnating to a lightning-based path (flight, interrupts) and taking some levels in bard and druid (druid so she can still use her sling).
It's heavily party-based. You CAN solo a bit, especially at low levels, but you really want to get at least two other party members for most interesting stuff, up to eight people. Some classes are specialized, others not, some are very high-tension and some are way more relaxed.
You've probably seen just as many banner ads for Retro as you have for all the Iron Realms games...
It's a lot of fun to explore new areas you've never been in before. And there's a lot. :)
-
I tried Retro, didn't like it too much. My favorite MUD of all time is still DartMUD.
-
Lol, I got bored of Dart after they told me to practice my skills by casting spells at an object. The only reason I play permadeath games is so that I don't have to grind.
