Title: Looking for an RPG
Post by: jd6199 on May 25, 2009, 08:37:20 pm
Hey everyone. Lately I've been in the mood to play a good CRPG but I haven't found anything that's really caught my eye.  Anyone know of anything good? I'm not really looking for an MMO, and I would prefer if you guys had freeware suggestion, but any suggestion would be nice.

Haha no sorry I meant computer RPG. But yes, I'd agree FF7 is great.

If you can find it anywhere, Planescape: Torment was the best CRPG ever made, hands down.

You're a millennia old, immortal, amnesiac zombie on a quest to kill himself, in a world drawn straight from The Inferno.  The combat is hardline 3rd edition AD&D, which isn't that great, but the Black Isle stylishness makes it tolerable.  Your party is a wisecracking skull, a chaste succubus, and the coolest elf in videogame history.  It has over a million lines of dialogue, multiple endings, and an insane robot voiced by Dan Castellaneta.  You haven't played RPGs until you've played Planescape.

Well there is a Computer FF7 but I assume you don't mean console games put onto the computer.

Do Point and Click Adventures count? Hmm probably not. I should start a topic about those because I havn't played them in a while (I should have bought Dreamfall while I had the chance)

Lets see
-Fallout Series
-Eldar Scroll series
-Diablo Series
-Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2

However Your looking for some freeware also. Hmmm... I personally never played a GOOD Freeware RPG that was good on the basis of being an RPG.

See I'd love to try Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2 but I'm running Vista and I've heard that neither work/work well unless you have XP, so I think I'm out of luck

What about emulation of any kind? No?

If you are willing to play a very old CRPG, I would suggest Wasteland (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/wasteland).

It is easily one of the best CRPGs I have ever played. Plus, it is the spiritual ancestor to the Fallout series. Fallout 1 had several references to Wasteland in it: Fat Freddy, Desert rangers, etc.

It is not technically freeware, but the only way you can get a copy now, through means fair or foul, is on abandonware sites.

EDIT: In fact, if you are willing to play old CRPGs like Wasteland, then there are many good RPGs you can choose from.

This isn't Warhammer.

I personally recommend the Baldur's Gate series. For freeware I'll have to look for a little while.

Actually, I've played that and I can vouch for it being fun. Also, it's the spiritual ancestor to Fallout, not the successor. I think.

Hmm. Maybe I should run a LP of Wasteland.

Ancestor, successor, same difference. ;D

I found a few good Wasteland videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF-TZp6t3W0&feature=PlayList&p=C8A83C55F2F24715&index=3) on YouTube, but there aren't any with

Automatic weapon-fire.

Probably my favorite part of Wasteland. I'll see if I can dig out an old save and upload a video or two to YouTube.

Last Scenario. Find it somewhere.

Heh, I remember that one when it came out. Great game. Originally released here (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2474929) on somethingawful back in 07, you will need the archives upgrade to see the thread.

If you would be put off playing by the fairly generic intro backstory, don't be as
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also the game is huge. As I recall there were at least two occasions that I thought the game was coming to a conclusion, only for it to expand into a vaster world.

The game also includes a complete minigame.

Follow the download link here (http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/LastScenario) for the game.

As I remember, the download didn't come with instructions for the controls so I'll post a copy of it here.

Controls are the following: Space continues the dialog, X opens and closes the menu, and B selects an menu entry. You do move around with the cursor keys. Alt + Enter switches to full screen and F1 opens a few menu options including letting you rebind keys.

The game uses a font that may not be installed on your computer. If you have Office, you can get it here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=24a66277-cd9f-4332-a6f1-52b85a6470bd&displaylang=en), otherwise you can get it here (http://www.wafu.ne.jp/3dlogo/fonts/msgothic.ttf). If you're running vista, you have to get rid of msgothic.ttc (or rename it to something else) before you can load that file.

NWN 1 runs on Vista. NWN 2 is a waste of time.

If you end up playing NWN and want some really great interactive storylines, visit the persistent world: Escaped from the Underdark.

You can find me there currently enjoying a scythe wielding druid/babrbarian named Tree.

CRPG (http://www.armchairarcade.com/neo/node/1545)

When I was a kid, it was called Combat RPG.
Adam Sessler called it Common RPG.
The OP seems to call it a Computer RPG.

For me, CRPG has always meant "computer rpg", to distinguish from "RPG" which means tabletop (or rocket propelled grenade).

(rambling snipped)

I'm going to give an unusual suggestion, Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemption.  It plays pretty different from most computer RPGs and the writing is decent.  Not free, but old.  Dunno how easy it is to find.  Probably my favorite besides Planescape Torment, just dug it out of a box...

Around here we never actually say "Computer RPG" or "Console RPG" or even "Japanese RPG" I've only experienced it on the internet.

Though I have heard people say "lol" and that annoys me to no end for some reason. I count it as irrational hatred though since on paper it isn't as annoying as I find it to be.

All versions of Neverwinter Nights up to v1.68 are not compatible with Windows Vista and have been blocked from installation by the operating system. If you are having difficulty running Neverwinter Nights on Windows Vista ensure that the game has been updated to v1.68 and that you are running the game as an administrator.

Yuck, it was different alright, had a lot of potential but damn, that game was repetitive lol. Some dungeons were so easy you could do them without even pausing once, other dungeons were horrifying, forcing you to restart every frick'n time you didn't watch yourself.
Also, the dialogue options didn't matter at all, the story remained the same. Ah well, some things were cool in that game though and I wish there was an rpg like that, only done the proper way. I'm a sucker for vampires :P (and yea, I know about Vampire: The masquerade: Bloodlines, that game scares the crap out of me >.>)

Bloodlines really turned me off for a lot of reasons.

Redemption, for all its flaws, did have a suitably dramatic story that really fit the flavor of the tabletop game.  Not really anything in the way of dialogue choices, but they nailed the flavor, which is sometimes fun.  :D

Hmm. Maybe I should run a LP of Wasteland.

F--K YES, you shoud.

not only was it the spiritual ancestor to fallout, you'll notice some familliar names in the game and on the credits.  Bryan Fargo was at the helm of Interplay for both those games, and worked on each of them.

also, Bards Tale and Wizardry were good RPGs if you like those kinds of games.  i dont know if i'd have the patience to play them again though, as they get repetitive and lack the overhead map of Wasteland.

Other great but lesser known RPGs include Mega Traveler (based on the pen-and-paper game) for sci-fi, and The Magic Candle for fantasy.  I think TMC might possibly be one of the best done RPGs ever.

Oooh yeah, Wizardry.  Classic computer RPGing at its classic-est.  Break out the graph paper, and the erasers!  You never know what might happen that will render your maps...less correct than you had hoped...

Making your own Wizardry maps is, by the way, mandatory.  Looking them up online is not allowed.  It's the biggest form of cheating that you can do in Wizardry, because the a lot of the fun and difficulty comes from the fact that you're exploring an unknown dungeon with somewhat unknown rules.

I loved Bloodlines. Redemption was rather boring though, had a bunch of bad ideas, didn't capture the feel of the tabletop. I dunno, to each his own.

Yep, the Wizardy games were excellent. I remember, that I spent a lot of time playing with Wizardry 6. Some of the in-game puzzles freaked me out to be honest, because my english was quite horrible in those days.... ;D

Yes yes yes.

I've never won that game. Even with the "create a bunch of characters, dump all their stuff on one guy, delete characters, make more, repeat" cheat.

... Hmm. Perhaps that's why I never finished it.  >:(

you know, my first exposure to wasteland was when one of my gradeschool friends got it on his c64.  he named characters after each of our group of friends, and let us know what was going on each week.

it was kind of like a pre-internet LP.

Also, I think Arcanum deserves to be on the list of all-time great computer RPGs.  it gets lots of hate, but it had a great story and multiple solutions to most scenarios.  there really were different paths all through the game, and even NPCs advanced differently depending on your actions.  great all around.

OH, OH! Betrayal at Krondor. It's got what I've always wanted in a RPG:
- Characters going from helpless to powerful
- Ambushes, betrayal, an ally you can't trust
- Dungeon crawling
- Interesting side quests, good conversation
- Lots of little details
- Plot twist

I still love it. Problem is that there's a lot of grinding early on (especially the bard skill). And it gets very easy later on if you grind your skills. But still one of my favorites of all time. Oh, and it's free too. Not "piratable" free, given out by Sierra for free.

Buck Rogers is one of those games that tries to kill you. Not in a funny way. It's still good fun.
