Title: A few changes to Fey Mood outcomes
Post by: Scribble on February 05, 2007, 06:40:00 am
While I know its greedy, some of the skills benifiting from fey moods havealways erked me. Although as said this is partly greed, it seems to slightly defeat the emotional reward of your dwarf making something special to improve his... melting skill.

1) Furnance operating. Meh, this ones pure greed, but it takes a lot of micromanagement to avoid having all metalsmiths turn into legindary furnace operaters... Which as said above just means they have an amazing skill to smelt ore quickly.  Perhaps if % of melted item recovoury was linked to skill, I'd understand but that's a whole different tale.

2)Tanning. ...Arg... legindary tanners?????? Asside from being useless this is also silly.   It would be great if this was taken off the possible skills to benifit.

3)Engraving, OK, this is pure greed. But it doesnt seem right to make stuff to produce better wall smoothers.

4) Farming, if milking/cheesemaking ect where included in the threshing package that would be great, but why isnt cooking a skill that benifits from fey moods?

Actually, I'm wondering why Tanners don't make higher quality leather like Weavers make higher quality cloths.

As for the engravers, engravers can also cut out facades and the like as well as smoothing walls. It makes sense that you could learn how to carve half of a statue embedded in a wall by carving out a full statue.

Because while masterpiece food is OK, artifact food would be extraordinarily silly.

"This is a dwarven syrup roast. It is circled by bands of moonstone. This object menaces with spikes of copper."

Of course, legendary cooks bashing goblins in the head with spiked cat tallow biscuits would be fun, but there are some lines which are better not crossed.

On the other hand, artifact potions make a lot of sense.  Alchemists could work out well.  Just add more descriptors in which things can be "decorated" with.

"This is a potion of liquid fire.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It is encased in a bottle of emerald and diamond.  It is infused with cave spider venom.  It was boiled with dissolved limestone.  It is stoppered with moonstone.  The mist from the fumes form an image of a dragon and a dwarf.  The dwarf is throwing butterflies at the dragon.  The dragon is in a posture of supplication."

Good  point: I suppose that the tanning issue is to limit the protective worth of leather armour?

I suppose, but it seems to me that masterpiece clothes made from masterpiece cloth might now actually be more protective than masterpiece leather armor, depending on how modifiers are applied...

I'm sure once skills are consolidated, things will be more useful all around.  Having a legendary furnace operator is useful though; pumps out materials like mad.

The Scone of Stone... sounds like artifact cooking to me.

When your legendary engravers start churning out masterpiece carvings, you'll see this in a different way.
