Title: Game Stopping Announcements
Post by: valcon on January 15, 2008, 03:38:00 am
Why does it pause the game when I discover Mica for the 50,000,000th time, but not when 30 of my dwarves get killed due to rampaging cave spiders?

Seems like the game pausing announcements should have settings in the ini or something of the sort,

like notify on dwarf death

or only notify found materials once

I'm sure there are others, but this setup strikes me as a bit odd.

Seconded.  The re-discovery of a non-economic stone is less important than a death after a prolonged period without casualties.

Mass casualties shouldn't spam interruptions, though.  I only need to be told once that my minions are dying.

This isn't just a helpful suggestion, it's an important one.  DF does have a problem with warnings and announcements:  Some are too chatty, others missing and badly needed.  Some changes everyone can agree on, but others will be more debatable.  So, another vote yes on the idea of giving the player greater control over the settings.

To see an example of this channel a river into a magma vent. This will seal the vent on the first layer and create a chit load of obsidian. In the process some of the water will turn lower layers into obsidian that is unsupported. You'll be about 30 messages informing you of harmless cave ins and every one of them will pause the game and redirect the camera.

And births.  F*ck births, I couldn't care less when a dwarf pops out a mini-dwarf.  I'd like to it to show up in the announcements, but I don't want it to pause the game.

Well, with births, they push those kids out in the oddest places, so often times it's a matter of curious interest as to where the kids wind up. I'd also like the "Dwarf cancels job; scared away by monster" messages updated with a zoom to location feature at the very least.

Allow the player to set which events trigger messages. Problem solved.

Even simpler, allow to switch annoucements off. This would save owners of weaker computers (for instance myself) by allowing long-time runs -- since system crashes are far less systematic in the latest versions. The fortress will take care of itself while I take a shower or go shopping.

an entire config file for messages seems necessary
with parts:
event tag and name:
pause on event: Yes/no
zoom on event: Yes/no
event text:

that would solve it all i think :P

so many times did i lose dwarves that had wandered off to do one thing or another... and i couldnt figure out where..
one was killed by 'heat' earlier today... and i still dont know how.. i think he wandered in to the caldera to pick up a hory marmont corpse that had been killed by a fire man.. but i just dont know.. cause it took me 20 minutes of searching and i never found him.

Or how about in the announcements menu, you could decide to zoom to the site of the announcement by selecting the announcement and pressing, say, "z"?
