Title: Laptop-friendly keys
Post by: Jetman123 on April 27, 2008, 09:02:00 am
What I would like to see would be some alternate method of entering in keypad stuff. Since I'm on a laptop which is not keypad-friendly - I can put in keypad numbers and symbols, but it's difficult and inconvenient. Plus, I find myself constantly mistaking which menus use keypad plus and which menus use the arrow keys.

I'd prefer for both to work if at all possible. All keypad plusses/minuses and arrow up/down keystrokes should do the same thing, on all menus. Minor thing, but it would make things a helluva lot better for the laptop users.  :)

I think after the army arc, the next to be worked on is Presentation, which will include some of the menues and stuff.

I'm also pretty sure that you can change the key bindings somewhere.

I second this, especially the way to navigate menu can be unintuitive on the laptop. Fun fact: DF drain my battery faster than any other application, something like 15 min on a big fortress   :D

Occasionally on IRC, and while I wasn't there, most recently at the DF Meetup where some fans bought Toady beer in person.  Basically, the presentation arc is next so that donations might increase so Toady can continue to make rent payments and eat.

Well, that makes sense.

Excellent.

Sellout! Toady shouldn't be worrying about such physical discomforts as starvation and lack of accommodation he should be like any great artist, suffering for his work. Because obviously if you didn't suffer it must be crap. Which reminds me I have to get round to donating.

I can't imagine he programs DF on a laptop.
So lacking a place to have his computer would be a problem, to say the least.
As far as the OP: Re-bind your keys or somesuch until Presentation arc rolls around.
Or you can buy a USB keypad, those are generally pretty cheap from what I've heard.
Me, I don't have a laptop.  No worries about that sort of thing for me.
Plus, the probable drain on the battery would make it useless anyway.  Unless you're by a power outlet and have your power cord with you...

Yeah, I need a USB keypad, but I also love playing Dwarf Fortress on the laptop. It doesn't require all that much to run, and it provides endless hours of entertainment when I'm stuck somewhere. So yeah.  :)
