Title: About construction

v0.27.169.33a
Construction of large buildings can take forever. Not just the actual building time, that's realistic, but the time ordering them to build it one tile at a time takes just as long. How about a UKHM size changer like with bridges? When you select the first raw material to build it out of, have the list shrinks down to that one type of material. Or just have it subtract the whole amount of required material from the first one you select.

Another thing on construction: Why can't 'construction' attached to bridges be supported by it? If I build a bridge out over a cliff and try to put a bit of floor at the end, it just collapses. However I could build nothing but floor extending out as far as I want without any support besides the 1 tile anchored to the cliff.

Well, I imagine the systems for building Walls and stuff could improve in the future, considering how loved it is now. Also it needs to be changed since you can end up using an entire forest building a large wooden building, so changing it to use logs like Bridges/Roads do (Covering several tiles only need up 1 log/stone) would be nice.

As far as the construction-attachment thing, thats just how the game engine is set up at the moment I'd think. I'd doubt that you'll ever be able to have "Buildings" supporting walls and floors, because that would require cave-ins to check all the buildings in the game too, and that'll just slow the game down further.

I think the thing with bridges is: they are no simple bridges. Simple bridges are made by flooring the required distance. Once Toady gets multi-tile constructions working, bridges will be as simple to make as current bridges are. Now, the current bridges are retracting bridges, which means that any construction attached to them would either break the bridge, or fall off when the bridge is raised. Thus, it is very correct and realistic that bridges do not support constructions.
