When ever I try to run Dwarf Fortress (and this includes the versions preceding 40d) I get this generic, "dwarfort.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I've played it before on my system no problem, but it doesn't seem to want to run since I've reinstalled Windows XP recently.
I know my problem is vague, but I really don't know what kind of things I could provide that would be relevant.
At the very least, here is my system specs:
K8N-E Deluxe Asus MB
Athlon 64 2800+
2gb RAM
Radeon x1650
I just finished reading the Headshoots succession game and I was really hoping to get back into DF, thanks in advance.

You reinstalled XP recently...Did you install your video card drivers, and are they up to date?

Yeah, they're up to date. ATI just released Catalyst drivers version 9.3 a few months ago which I had never used with my card before, but other DX9 games seem to function just fine so I don't think that is the problem.

Gah, I've done every little fix I could think of, I've reinstalled my video card drivers, I've reinstalled DX9, scanned my computer for possible virus or malware infection, I even reinstalled .Net Framework because I was desperate...
Save me internet!

Attempt to start DF again, and immediately afterward look for anything suspicious in the Event Viewer.
Can't remember exactly how to find it on XP, but it would be under Control Panel and then... I think it was System Information and then Administrative Tools.

Thanks Untelligent, I completely forgot about that...
[edit]
Good gravy, there appears to be an issue with atioglxx.dll which means it could very well be an issue with the new 9.3 catalyst driver. Come to think of it, while I don't have issues running games like Mount & Blade or Oblivion, I was having issues running the Skulltag Doom port with anything other than software rendering...
[yet another edit]
Damn, I decided to download Catalyst driver version 6.11 in an attempt to OpenGL to function properly, but when I tried to install, I was greeted with this:
"Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software."

Alright, I guess it is the new Catalyst drivers, or at the very least, my video card.
I managed to get Catalyst ver. 8.6 on my computer, and the game can run, but I'm only getting 7fps on the intro, I don't even want to see how the actual game runs. Afterward, I back-tracked even further and installed ver. 8.11 (which I believe are the drivers that came shipped with the Sapphire X1650) but nothing noticeable changed. If someone more tech savvy then myself could help me with my OpenGL problem, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ok, I guess it isn't the new catalyst drivers, I put DF on another box that had the exact video card as me, and was running 9.3 Catalyst drivers, and it worked just fine, I even switch cards just for good measure.
[edit] at this point it isn't even a Dwarf Fortress issue, never mind I suppose.
