For some odd reason, my dwarves won't harvest. They'll queue the job, run to the field, stand on the item, and then wander off to do something else.
I have barrels, I have stockpile space, I even made a stockpile that is plants only as I saw advised in another thread, but none of it does anything. They just go to pick it up, then wander off, leaving it to rot in the field.

Hrm.
Getting any cancellation messages about it?
If not, I'd try going to the Orders menu and changing the cancellation message to show all cancellations. If the attempted harvest gives any cancel message, that should give you a better idea of what's happening.
If it doesn't give any messages with that setting... then I don't know what is going on.

I wasn't getting any cancellation messages about it. Though the dwarves were momentarily flashing a question mark.
Though I can't really test the problem anymore since I struck an aquifer and managed to flood that particular fort. >.<

Those symptoms are exactly what happens when you have "Dwarves haul food" disabled in Orders. Make sure it's enabled next time.

Do you also have enough space in your food stockpiles?
In my forts my dwarves leave tons of food to just rot in the fields. They will harvest, but because there is no more place to haul the food due to carefully sized stockpiles (to avoid using up 500 barrels on plump helmets) the food will just sit on the fields and rot away.

Yup, I even made a note of it in the first post that I did indeed have stockpile space.
