Stop doing WHAT?

If your answer is making topics, no, I don't plan to anytime soon.

I know what spamming is and I know I'm not doing anything of the sort.

In fact, this topic is more useless and spammy than all of mine combined.

They're of completely separate subjects!

What, should I call the merged topic:

"An Optical Illusion, a Couple Funny Pictures, a Creepy Video, a Newbie Request, and a Music Thread"

Isn't that a bit overkill for ONE BLEEDING TOPIC?

Eh, might as well make this useful.

Alas, some of us feel some of said ideas are much for made topics. Then again, on a digital forum like this it really doesn't matter the size of a thread other than a sense of manners.

I suppose we just gotta say that not everything interesting you find needs it's own topic. Imagine a middle-aged lady E-mailing you every new lolcat image. Hell, image said lady E-mailing you every updated image on that site and hardcore Republican lolcat edits.

Kinda see what we mean? Although I feel this could have been settled over private messages rather than a new topic.

What the fuck?

I've never seen this done before. A dual-topic?

And I think 1980's-era movies don't exactly qualify as old... yet.

Eh, maybe that's because my tastes veer a bit retro.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Citizen Kane
Wait Until Dark

and I could think of a dozen more...

What was the one where Harrison Ford is an escaped con trying to prove his innocence while on the lamb?

I forgot the name, but it was good.

I don't recall, but Harrison Ford is a badass and I don't think anyone has mentioned Indiana Jones yet.

Also, since this seems like the most appropriate place to put it, a big thank-you (to ThreeToe, I assume) for taking out the trash.

Bah, it ain't really old unless you have it in black and white.  Heck, I've seen a few silent films that weren't so bad.  Still, some of my personal favorites that haven't been mentioned yet:

Arsenic and Old Lace
Sands of Iwo Jima
Errol Flin's stuff
Marks Brothers stuff (Those guys were absolutely brilliant)
Charlie Chaplin's stuff (I especially enjoy his spoof on the Nazis [made pre-WWII, when Hitler could be funny])

I'm sure to think up more.  80% of my non-Disney movie experience as a child came from the Turner Classic Movies station.

...he's a doctor. He's on a train that crashes, which is how he escapes after being framed for the murder of his wife. He jumps off a dam. That bring you anywhere?

I was going to say Star Wars.

A thread for Good Movies From 1970-1990, and no one said The Road Warrior (et al) yet?  For shame.

My school did an extremely decent rendition of Arsenic and Old lace for Theatre.

Flash Gordon: 1980
Jaws: 1975
Total Recall: 1990
Raiders of the Lost Ark: 1981

Somebody mention Indiana Jones, but I decided to nominate the movie that stood forward in my mind as the one I still remember when I think of the name Indiana Jones. Partially because of the end. That is the same with all of those movies, except Jaws. Jaws was a horror movie done right. No excess of gore to the point where half the screen is filled with blood at all times. Just subtle psychological horror.

I would've nominated High Noon as well, but that's too old (1952). Same with West Side Story (1961). I protest this on the grounds of cinematic excellence!

Is Aliens old enough?

Yes, 1986.

I just saw Total Recall, it made me say WTF, and ...

That's partly why I like it. The other reason? I saw it when I was young, around 5-8. For certain parts of the ending, I believe I have received psychological damage in some form or another, but oh well. Doesn't seem to affect my amorality around here much.

I have, too, found myself liking only old movies (and music).

Just made a top10 of my quite small collection... turns out four of them are Kubrik's, 2-3 are so bad they're good, and one is Finnish.

Alphabetical order of course:

If they remade the thing, using the same script and decent actors who don't overact. Limited the film to being very light on the action (compared to other horror movies currently) like the original The thing. And kept the alien as disgusting as possible. I'd be happy. err HORRIFIED.

Also, try not to make all the actors look the same.  There were like three people in that movie that looked identical.

  • 2001 - A space odyssey
  • ...........

that came out in 1968....which is another reason why its such an amazing film considering it predates the moon landing and, well, the scope of this topic  ::)
