I noticed they were gone after they were posted yesterday, with no trace of them. When I try and go to them via history, it says they were either deleted or are off-limits to me. I was wondering why this was.
-
I believe you mean Viewtiful-Chris's eight threads. He went on the rampage and started posting random drivel all over, and getting very defensive if anyone doubted their value, arguing that every single one of his threads had just as much "right" to be here as anyone else's. Even if it was just to show a photo of Barack Obama with photoshopped shades saying "Dat ass". Claimed it was just as much a discussion topic as anything else here, and kept insulting everyone who voiced a differing opinion.
Guy was a troll. He was just pushing buttons.
-
Oh. I logged off before that happened.
-
Kinda sorry I missed it. I can't help but think I pushed him to it. I'm not sure whether to be ashamed of inadvertently fucking up the board, or proud of making him show his true colors.
Probably just my royale-sized ego talking again.
-
I've got a sneaky suspicion it was his intention all along. He may have been a very smart troll, figuring out exactly what would get us to twitch up. I mean, his first post badmouthed Dwarf Fortress, and that's a surefire way to get folks around here riled (as was made very evident in the following responses. We share a bit of the blame here). Then he goes off spamming topics filled with content that seems like it would come off some other gaming forum, one that we for whatever reason see ourselves as "better than". Not to mention putting emphasis on postcount, which has been a touchy subject around here for some time.
I sound a bit like a conspiracy theorist saying this... But it's either he knew exactly what buttons to push, or he was really just that much of a jerk.
But there's really no need to talk about this. We got hit, it got cleaned up, it's over. Let's find something else to do.
-
I wish I hadn't missed this. Internet Drama is the greatest spectator sport known to man. But, from the sound of it, it's good he's gone.
-
I guess I had him pegged wrong afterall.
-
He was an interesting troll. I knew that he was intentionally pushing some buttons, but not whether it was for fun teasing or just plain trolling. And he technically never broke rules, not that I saw of. Well played, Viewtiful-Chris, well played.
But that just shows what I like about this place. In many other forums and sites, trolls like that would seep into the community, make friends, and get away with making the place worse. Here, they're just wiped clean before becoming a cancer.
-
Anyway, back to post count. Why is it touchy again?
-
It's best to judge the post on the post itself, rather than the amount of posts that the author also made.
-
He actually asked a legit sounding question in DF Gameplay Questions, I think.
Guy was good.
-
No, he was more than good. He was simply viewtiful.
-
Yeah, I didn't feel like he was that epic of a troll.
-
What boggled my mind was, if he was really trying to troll us, why did he keep it isolated to General Discussion? You would think bogus bug reports and suggestions would be part of a trolls balanced breakfast.

It wasn't that great. The morbid amusement turned into resigned exasperation quite quickly, for me at least.
But now at least I feel justified for sounding like a bit of a dick in his introduction thread.
-
I go on a Babylon 5 marathon and this is what I miss. Either an artificial fool masquerading as a hyper-defensive simpleton or a true fool making a fool of himself indeed.
At least he's been dealt with in a just manner.
-
What happened to him?
-
Wait, who are we talking about?
But oh, yeah. Trolls. Wonderful. Nice pun back there.
-
He made 8 threads, trolled, then I think he got banned.
-
Trolls, you say? I would worry about goblins and beak dogs more than those silly chasm-dwelling scabs.
In all seriousness, he was a minor inconvenience. He shall be gone from our memories and thoughts by the turn of the next year. Vanished, never to come back...
Unless, that is, he decides to create an alternate account. Armok protect us... but in all honesty, he shall become as one with dust to us. Gone.
-
When I turn my flaming mode on he will leave for sure.

Whoah! Never seen you around before. Me likey the avatar.
-
I think he just joined.
-
yeah. he posted in my lets play.
-
And by the way, Viewtiful-Chris did break the rules. He made personal attacks on a couple forum members. I think those were just slip-ups though...
As for post count, yeah. The quality of posting should be what's considered, not the quantity. If you rated people simply by post count, I would be the second-most important person here, followed closely by inaluct. And Toady One himself would only be seen as a few steps above, even though his posts are of course
Beyond Quality.
And that's just F'd up.
-
Yes, I'm a new face around here.
The avatar does wonders for people noticing me, that is certain.
...I'm so glad I have Photoshop and access to gradient tools.
-
What boggled my mind was, if he was really trying to troll us, why did he keep it isolated to General Discussion? You would think bogus bug reports and suggestions would be part of a trolls balanced breakfast.
Since he made an intro thread, I'd say he was trying to earn our trust. He did start off insisting that DF was difficult to learn, so it would take a while for him to get to that stage. He seemed more of a long-term troll. Someone who's happier trolling the minds and beliefs of DF fanatics and newbie lovers, than actually sabotaging DF. He wasn't one of those dumb newbie trolls, he was more like an intellectual attacking a religion by pretending to be a potential convert.
-
That, or he was just a giant jackass who thought demanding a symposium was a good way to introduce himself, took comments about spamming as an insult, and thought the best way to prove his point about the importance of Internet Politics was to gin some up and throw a big pout.
Yes, there are Professional Trolls. There's also idiots and jerks. Not every public disturbance is a strategy.
-
Agreed.
-
At times like these, I wish that threads were locked instead of deleted, so we could make a post-mortem :P
-
He may have thought he had a strategy, but did he really? Obviously there is split opinions here, but the fact of the matter is he was still caught fairly quickly, rending his strategy void.
So the question we should be asking ourselves more is "Did he think he could get away with it by bending the rules?" I would personally think not. The fact that there are so little trolls on these forums should have alerted him that he would get caught fairly quickly. I can only think (with the amount of forums he started in so little time only aggravating the result) that he simply wanted to cause as much disturbance as possible before going up in flames.
To an extent, it worked. But trolls will be trolls, and because there's so many of them one can only wonder at what makes them think they're so special when trolling occurs so often.
-
Muahah. Yeah, griefers get wiped clean here. It's amazing that I'm still around. It must be because I'm a nice guy.
EDIT: Oh no. I'm a bad person. D:
-
As we all know. The Dwarf Fortress forums seem to have a... warping effect on our collective hive-mind.
I must admit, the "Catching the Elusive Mermaid" discussion caught my eye shortly before I registered. Hah!
-
There is no wrong ideas in B12.

We don't actually seem to have a trolling contingent here at B12. It comes with the ludicrous learning curve of Toady's games. The low-rate trolls are weeded out really quick.
Although if Viewtiful-Chris really was a troll, I guess he lost it when he realized that long-term trolling would have been hell to pay.
-

and they're the only ones left.
-
The community isn't small enough for one person to significantly impact it in devastating ways. None of us forum goers hold power. Toady holds the power. I'm pretty sure viewtiful chris wasn't sappin' the Toad Source.

There did use to be a trolling contingent on the forums who would travel in packs. I'm not going to name any names (but the older forumers will know). They got banned one by one and now those that remain have either mellowed out or are still raging internally but are too afraid to say anything controversial. You can still sense their burning and misplaced desire to post inciting remarks in their words though.
These forums are rife with the teeming masses of posers though. Intellectual posers. Everyone who posted in this thread qualifies as one. Wait... I just posted in this thread... crap.
-
Ha! I don't claim to be a 'poser'. You know why I don't usually post in debate topics? It's because I'm stupid and I get taken apart. Piece. by. piece.
-
I resent this implication that I'm an Intellectual Poser. When have I ever pretended to be anything like intellectual?
-
Intellectual poser is such an unappealing phrase. I prefer the term 'demigod', because we like to flash our superiority in the same way a son of Zeus would flex muscles when he doesn't have to.
..Wait, that statement just turned me into a troll. Damn.
-
WTF? Troll?
The last troll I remember is Moin, in 2008...
However:

Or maybe they simply went somewhere else (http://www.2funnyguys.com/phpBB3/index.php)?

I'm a passive aggressive troll.

I like you anyway Umiman.

Oh we all love Umiman.

Lies. Its always a good time to resort to fire.
-
Fantastic, I look away for a second, and suddenly this thread is filled with... with...
Love.
Pull the lever. Pull it!
-
You guys disappoint me. We are Dwarf Fortress forum goers! We must always resort to fire, no matter what the infringement happened to be, or even if there was one. Hell, "do you want fries with that" is tantamount to "burn me with a flamethrower!". C'mon guys, this is basic level stuff.
-
What about a compromise? we all practise ¤!!LOVE!!¤, would that work?
-
¤!!LOVE!!¤ seems more like a mangled and flaming heart than any sort of romantic symbol. So obviously that's acceptable.
-
No. Even in the face of hug-tactular Armageddon. Never compromise.
Launch the bombs.

Armok is the only person I've met online that can make me rage using the power of love.
Intellectual poser is such an unappealing phrase. I prefer the term 'demigod', because we like to flash our superiority in the same way a son of Zeus would flex muscles when he doesn't have to.
I also dislike the term Intellectual Poseur. I prefer Pseudo-Intellectual, because adding Pseudo to words is a good way to pretend you're smarter than everyone else, which is something I enjoy doing.

Just curious, but is the red text meaning you're hugging people while covered in blood?
-
Armok is blood!
-
I am firmly sticking to my opinion that anybody who doesn't care to take an extra instant of effort to upgrade their !!stuff!! to ‼stuff‼ isn't nearly as worthy as they could be.

I too am not sure who this trolling contingent is. I have some ideas, but I don't remember any dedicated trolls.
I also like the term Pseudo-intellectual. It's to agnostic hipster Colbert-report fans what "You just don't get it" is to art students.
-
whoever they are, we can drive them away easily.
using hugs.
or with blessings of armok.
or hugs now blessed by armok, that leak warm, heartwarming blood.

Just use fire, that will show them who's boss!

Eh, my kind would just posses them.

Alternately, set Armok on fire, then let him "bless" them.

No need: "Hugs" and "Blessings of Armok" are already synonyms and have been for some while! EVERY hug has my blessing.

Yay! We can troll ourselves! We need no outside help! ^_-

Armok, God of Blood, hugs ToonyMan in the upper body!
It explodes in gore!
The left arm flies off in a bloody arc!
The head flies off in a bloody arc!
ToonyMan has been struck down.

Why Armok, why!? What did ToonyMan do to deserve dieing from being hugged to death besides failing to make you go into the cage trap horribly?!

I think this topic is done. We have the TEJAS thread for this.
Anyone know how to request a lock?

Can't the OP lock it? Since cheeetar created it, that should be an option.

An Aztec thread?? ???

Its the Texas thread and it would probably be for the best if this was locked.

Argh! Who knew demons could fly so hard.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Don't lock this thread!! :'(

The main problem I have with trolls is that you can't defeat them. If nobody responds to the troll, the troll claims victory in posting what he wants and getting away with it. If people respond to the troll, the troll claims victory by getting people to respond. If the troll gets banned, the troll can allege the mod of censorship and claim victory. If the troll doesn't get banned, the troll can continue what he does and claim victory.
The problem is that victory is meaningless unless you can be defeated...unless you CAN lose. I don't think I ever seen a troll done that yet.
-
Unless we troll back, and spam their emails, and firebomb their houses, Ok that last ones a bit too far.

Don't think of it from the troll's prespective: if the troll arrives, nobody responds to him, and then gets banned then we win. If we win, he loses no matter what he says because he fails to disrupt the forums.
-
I really don't see the use of locking this, but since people requested it...
