Title: What inspires you to write?
Post by: Jackrabbit on August 21, 2009, 11:24:17 pm
I know we have many talented writers on these forums, and even if we're not bona fide Pratchetts or Tolkiens, I always enjoy reading the stories posted here. I myself have written a few stories, mmm-all of which have been posted on this forum and I was wondering what inspires you guys and girls to write? For me, it was mostly Pratchett but (strangely) I've been put in the mood to try my hand at horror simply because of this video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ftld7Ohojg) Incidentally, I can't listen to the original Christmas version now, that one's just too catchy.

So, what inspires you to write, be it strange, trivial or grandiose, and why?

If I see something as interesting, I would sometimes write a story, documentary, fiction, historical, it depends.

I mostly write for fun - poems, stories, whatever. And since I hate modern poetry (it comes with being a lit major, ironically) all my poems are in iambic pentameter or close to it.

As to what inspires me, just sitting down and mucking around for a while does it for me. Or sometimes I think of a fun sing-song poem while in the shower. Or various other things.

Yes, thinking for a while does make me go off on a bit of a tangent about something that can eventually turn into a story.

But seriously though, I'm gonna read more Mythos, that song is getting to me. I need to research this.

It helps that the original song is scary as hell as it is.

Ask the others about where to start with Lovecraft. There are plenty of fans around here.

I'm inspired by so many things it falls beyond my ability to name them. Mostly this happens at a time where I am far away from something to write or type with, however.

Ideas come into existence inside my mind without any prompting, and I rarely act on 10% of the stuff I think of (otherwise, the whole Universe is going to die). That probably explains why I'm extremely unreliable, I get bored of my ideas quickly, and I have many more to replace them as they grow old.

I'm too ADD to focus and write a story.
Although I have great ideas they start to bore me.
However, I like to write freestyle.
Poetry that has no rules to defile.

I can see your perspective on that.
Writing can really get old hat.
But poetry has no rules you say?
I can think of a few.

Oops.

Well, If I am really bored to tears.
I could write with a syllable count.
However perfect rhymes are my fears.
I don't want to think of my syllable amount.

However, If I must count I can do.
Ten syllables for each and every line.
But I do not think it will impress you.
And did you know ten is one more than nine.

Pronunciation is a killer. I say however as three syllables - how ev er.

If I don't write, the ideas clog up my brain and i get massive headaches.
The authors that first inspired me were Asimov, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Jack London.
More recent inspirations have been Lovecraft, Douglas Adams, George Orwell, and Stephen King.
Shameful as it is, I've never read Pratchett's stuff. I want to though.

I think we have an unnaturally high percentage of writers on this forum.
Maybe it's because of the open-ended, story oriented aspect of DF.

Meh. Stephen King. A lot of his work is really good - especially the stand. He knew how to weave plot development and multiple characters together. His most recent novels are starting to feel kind of lame. Especially the last three books of the dark tower series.

Oh! I need to read the stand, thanks for reminding me!

I lost a LOT of faith in Stephen Kind after reading Desperation.  That really downed me, especially since he pulled in a character I really liked from Rose Madder and sprayed the same filth on her.

I think the main thing that draws me to Stephen King is just how he can describe the most mundane things in the most interesting ways...  He can fill pages talking about a flower vase, and you're begging to hear more of it.

Stephen King = writing god. I never got over how creepy his concept of time travel was in the Langoliers, among other things.

Terry Pratchett on the other hand, is one of the quirkiest, funniest writers I've ever read. He makes me wish Douglas Adams wasn't dead.

I actually got bored after the second book in the Hitchhiker series.

Did you manage to get your hands on the Dirk Gently stuff?

Oh, also:

Kurt Vonnegut rocks.

Forgot about Kurt Vonnegut. Honestly though, I've only read Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse 5.
