Title: Cthulhu Mythos
Post by: Jackrabbit on August 22, 2009, 01:21:19 am
I've you've been following my every post (and why wouldn't you?) you'd notice I've expressed an interest in doing a Cthulhu style bit of writing. Thing is, I have no idea about anything about Cthulhu whatsoever apart from that Atlantis 2 movie. So, since there is at least one fan of the series (the big man... uh, fish thing abomination himself) on the forum, I was wondering where should I start and what should I know?

There is of course the story "Call of Cthulhu" which is all about the famous giant green thing itself.

To understand the series, you must understand the author. H. P. Love craft was a messed up guy.

Also, there are places on the net were one, if he so chooses, can delve head first into the cyclopean madness of forbidden tomes, great old ones, deep old ones, shuggoths, al-shuggoths, mini-suggoths, cute little anime shuggoths, the dreaded (yet somehow also much-saught-after) Necrolomininomicomilon, and of course Mr. squid-like himself.

Just don't come crying to me when you're rocking in a pool of your own vomit contimplating suicide after witnessing a giant worm-monster dump acidic saliva all over genetically mutated freak-children in a foul-smelling decrepit old sardine factory.

They're all really great reads.

Style of writing. Horrific, evil styles of writing, with suspense and tension used in ways man was not meant to see...

Exactly! You will not be disappointed. Of course, you will also be driven utterly insane, so, trade off I guess.

Oh, do lets!
With the requirement that everybody use the gothic verbage of the writer.

Key words such as:
Tendril
Eldritch
Weird
Queer
Unnatural
Non-euclidean
Cyclopean
etc.

I'll be the curious investigator with the love of books and inscriptions.

I plan to last 3 seconds or so.

In a small factory town an Eldritch Non-euclidean city, dealing with your quirky dysfunctional family Cyclopean Tendrils is the easiest part of the journey Unnatural Mindfuck.

That works fine. Time to make an indie film about it.

A strange sound splits the vale of silence, tolling doom for the world of men. It's sound is unnatural in form, belying the patronage of the strange intelligences beyond this universe.

In other words: *Campy-batman scene change sound.*

Hey we could always do the "De Profundis" game (http://www.rpg.net/news+reviews/reviews/rev_6859.html).  I've never read the manual but some people on Truth and Beauty Bombs (http://www.truthandbeautybombs.com/bb2/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=907) were starting it a while back.  Since the people on that board are mostly assholes, why not start a Bay12 version?

Also, you can get almost everything from Lovecraft on Wikisource (http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:H._P._Lovecraft) as well.  That's where I read it all.
