Title: Predict your end
Post by: umiman on August 22, 2009, 04:19:53 am
Time for a fun thread!

Let's predict how long we'll stay on these forums. As in, how long more before the inevitable time comes when you either find something else to do or another forum to visit or you don't have time to come here and post any more or you get banned. How long do you think you'll be on the Bay12 forums for? How long more before you fade away into obscurity? How long more do you think this community will be active?

I think I'll be here for maybe 2 years or so for personal reasons which you guys probably don't care about anyway. So.. here's to hoping the game is complete within two years... yeah... probably not going to happen. As for the community, I haven't the faintest idea. I bet it'll last as long as Toady continues the game and when he decides to stop, it will continue for about a year before collapsing, if it comes to that.

Most likely real life will take me in, can already feel its pull on me.

I dunno though, kinda tired of gaming, already played a good portion of the games this computer can play and new games are too high tech for it, when I go to Iowa in the next year I probably won't even bring it.

So I'm guessing about a half year to year of being able come on here regularly then just disappear for a few years while I sort out my life and depending how certain events unfold come back one day.

Well, I'll be off to university next year, leaving home and the comforts of not paying for electricity and internet. So being the budget weary student, I may have to cut away some of my time on these forums and on my computer in general. I'll also have less free time splitting what time I ain't studying with working, socializing and sleeping.

Unless I fall off the face of the planet, I probably will stay here until the community crumbles. Honestly though, as I get older, it feels like mysteriously vanishing to another world is more likely.
I intend to take a break from society for awhile, preferably before college, so I'll be gone then, but I'll most likely come back when it's over.

For the entirety of the foreseeable future really. I don't think Toady will ever stop doing DF, or anything else that makes the community disappear.
I will probably not be be as active in the community as I am now for more than a few years, but I'll probably keep the devlog in my RSS forever, which means possibly following links from it to FotF or similar threads evry few weeks atleast, and I have Email notification so I'll most likely be able to respond to PMs as well.

I'll be hit by a car and killed.

Wait, you meant on the forums? Um. As far as the forseeable future.

I will disappear every six months and reappear two months following, never ceasing until the game is done or I am dead.

I might disappear in October, to be back whenever I feel like.

Of course, I'll always stop by every now and then to see if Toady's done yet.

I'll download the next version of DF, get insanely addicted to it, then get bored once I find something cool. Or I'll get frustrated with something. Or I'll find another forum where people are cooler. If I had to pick, it'd be the first.

Well I'll probably be here at least another year, unless university changes me radically. If anything I'll be on more because halls come with all your bills paid so I wont have to worry about electricity at all. After that though most second year students rent a house with friends at which point I may have to cut back on the computer so I don't create a massive electricity bill.

Funny stuff comes up here.  I'll probably at least keep up with it for as long as it is around.

Visiting the forums has become a daily ritual, so I don't see me stoping anytime within the next two years. I doubt I'll get banned, I have never even gotten a warning so far and plan to keep it that way. Besides, this is a cool gateway to new indie games.

As long as Workerdrone, Josh, Aqizzar and Jackrabbit stay here I will. Though the rest of the community is pretty awesome too, so Ill probably be here a while.

I couldn't even come close to predicting it.  My life isn't nearly planned or predictable enough to have an idea, and I hope it stays that unpredictable.  ;D

It's very uplifting to hear you say that. Despite my thousands of posts, I don't feel I've actually contributed alot to the community. Kind of like how although I've personally supported Toady and his work, I've never actually donated to him.

It's sort of saddening to see alot of regulars fall out of grace. First it was Yanlin, then Inaluct stopped coming around, then Okenido got banned, and I'm sure I'm forgetting people I shouldn't be forgetting, but I'll miss them too.

The reason I might disappear for awhile in October is because I'll be moving to college, and although I might be gone for awhile, I'll make it a point to still come hang around here.

I'll probably stay until I'll have to pay for my own internet, but I'll be back on eventually.

Not sure you can do much about Inaluct, but I'm pretty sure you can PM Yanlin and Okenido and see if they PM back. Despite bans people can still log in, and based on what I know from another SM forum, PM people.

I don't know if I've been on this forum long enough to qualify to post here, but I can't imagine leaving in the foreseeable future. (Which for a teen, is a ridicolously short time)

Okenido was banned? I thought I still saw him around though.

Guys, stop being depressing. Leaving usually means you found something better to do, so talk about what is that will make you leave this community.

Okenido was banned? I thought I still saw HER around though.

Guys, stop being depressing. Leaving usually means you found something better to do, so talk about what is that will make you leave this community.

Because she isn't around to defend her gender anymore.

but yeah, this was Toady's statement, that largely went unnoticed:

I just removed and edited a bunch of posts.  Despite the title of this thread, please do not use that as an excuse to derail it.  Okenido went into his or her anime-shota-pedo thing again despite previous admonishments and has been banned permanently.  Please refer to the forum guidelines.

She may have been a bit out there, but I still appreciated her presence.

Those that don't hang out with us anymore, like Inaluct, I'd wish would come stop by, and tell us what they're up to. That is something I'd be very grateful for.

I actually feel kinda bad about that, since she got banned in a thread I accidentally derailed, almost as a direct result of said derailment. :(

Then I'd end up being the old guy with all the stories.
Which would be kinda cool.

I'll probably stay here for quite a while and then just stop. Probably because I find a new game or something, but I'll stop visiting for a while and then just forget about it.

If anyone wants to contact Inaluct, he still plays HellMOO pretty regularly.

I'll probably post once in a while, and probably visit the dev log for quite a while unless something swepts me away, i'll probably come here less and less as i start traveling, finish college and get a new job, but i probably will return after a while. I aways check back on old internet stuff i like, specially games sicne i aways get curious about how they developed while i wasn't looking.

Anyway, is it me or suddenly people here are getting all emo and gloomy around here like something's bad is about to happen? I'm seeing a bit too many threads that circle around "DF ending" lately. Sure thing its been nearly a year since the latest release, but toady hasn't nearly stepped 1 cm away from the project as far as i know, jeez.

I'm planning on going to the West Bank for a year plus this fall/winter. I won't be playing Dwarf Fortress or wasting time on forums from there...when I come back I'll probably get back into some forums, like bikeforums.net, that have to do with things I'm interested in, and probably this one too when I get back into playing DF.

I've never been anything more than obscure on here, so I've already faded into obscurity. As to how long I hang around the community? Probably long after DF 1.0 is released, so years yet.

I'm not entirely sure really, I'm only really in this forum for general discussion and other games atm. I feel i can't contribute much to the development, other than donations ofc, so when the threads here start getting silleh I might just stop coming here.

It's mostly the people I stay for, and the DFC community, cause i started that and I'm in no mood to give it up any time soon.

I shall wither into obscurity obviously, at least until Dwarf Fortress 1.0 comes around. Which is the Geek equivalent to the end of the world.

Also, I find it hard to believe me not being here would change anything at all. Inaluct however.

Where was that story about redundancy? Oh, right. (http://www.alexandraerin.com/stories/2007/the-redundant-man-who-was-redundant) ;)

I tend to leave the internet every once in a while. Good example: me leaving last August and coming back early this year. I leave sometimes. But I always come back.
