As the title suggests, i've come to realise that i spend waaaaaaaaay too much time online.
(Or, rather, other people realise that i spend "too much" time on games and whatnot.)
I therefore, require a nice diversionary Hobby. I am currently learning C++ to facilitate in other projects, but that does not eat up that much time.
Something that isnt a sport would be preferable, unless it's an obscure one. (basically not Football or rugby, or any other, horrible contact sport).
Anything at all really, as long as it dosent eat up my monies too much.
-
Well ye could try taking a fun class at a nearby community college (assuming you have one). Like I've got an ornamental ironwork class thats alot of fun and if your only doing the projects you don't have to pay extra unless you want to do your own project. Even then at least for that class its not that pricy and you can always go to a scrap yard and scavenge some decent metal.
-
Learn to juggle, learn to ride a unicycle, paint, draw (even if it's bad), write, make models, learn to fix engines, play badminton (ok it's not obscure, but I don't like sports and I like badminton), read books, take up photography, play the piano/flute/sax/insert any other musical instrument here, solve maths problems for fun, etc, etc, etc.
Do you want me to go on?
-
... Latin dance?
It's what I do with my free time. :D
-
You should learn to scat.
-
I've always found psychology to be an interesting hobby.
-
Running is cool.
-
-
-
Hunting? Lots of time outside, good for working on your senses, and hey you get to kill things and eat em.
-
Creative writing? I find that it's a wonderful form of expression.
-
Cook. Learn to bake and fry and boil and chop. You'll be more knowledgeable AND you'll have better meals in the future.

Plus it's a good way to pull in the ladies. Seriously if you can cook even a little bit well it goes a long way.
-
So many ideasssss! (http://www.instructables.com/)
But yeah, running is cool. Especially now that autumn is approaching and the air is cool enough to run.
-
Creating games. It trains your creativity AND coding skills. Also, the skills in trying to learning how to make games becomes very useful if you ever decide to go into technical research in the future. I've got some sweet technical research skills from researching for crappy games.
Or, yeah, cooking is awesome.

Actually, i DO do games, i mostly design, never got around to DOING them yet, but i am working on something with the WorkerDrone at the moment.
Oh, and i can cook already, sorta.
EDIT: Hunting has always intrigued me, though it'd have to be things i'd actually eat, or others would eat. i dislike people who simply kill things for sport.
-

Hunting what?
It's not like he's in Canada... Or Quebec.

Hmm, i think the largest Game in england is rabbits. Then again, i've never BEEN hunting before.
Deer is Huntable i expect.
Meh, i'll ponder this at another point.

The largest game animals are deer.
Rabbits are pretty small, and so are hares.
-
What are you talking about?
Deer are those little things with the big ears, RABBITS are the large, cloven hoof creatures.

Nah, the poison attacks are natural.

I must question the [IGNITEPOINT:0] and [FIREBREATH].
[CAN_CIV]? Really? You put that under moles.

..or fishing. It's sort of like hunting, but you don't need a rifle, bow and arrow, etc. Fishing seems a bit more boring to me, though some people swear that it's thrilling when you actually get something.

It really does depend on where you are and what you're aiming to get. Ice fishing is about as relaxed as it gets, with a small device holding the string for you while you just lay back and wait for the fish to bite, while others have in a boat, constantly jigging and reeling to try to replicate a prey creature's natural movement, and then you struggle and fight for deal life if anything does bite.

Learn to play the banjo.
-
I could learn the accordion?
I even have it here with me!
-
Yes, the accordian. You can become America's latest and greatest polka player.
-
....
America's....
....
-
Oh, wait, are you British? I know we have some Brits, I just forget who.
-
How often must i inform people of this fact!
It's even mentioned on the last page!
-
How often must I inform people that I'm illiterate!
How can you people honestly expect me to be able to read in today's world! It's not right.
-
Well, OK then, now you know.
-
You could still be America's greatest polka player, after you're done with the UK.
-
Become a whiskey aficionado.
-
I don't drink, i told you before.
-
I don't drink, i told you before.
I forgot that.
Become an orange juice aficionado.

Eat exotic foods.

Number one most important thing, make it something that doesn't involve a computer. Of course, all hobbies can be discussed online...I know all of mine have ended up with me posting on the internet about them...but still, make the hobby itself something away from the screen.
Some of my favorites
-Biking
-Playing an instrument
-Sacred Harp singing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Harp ...of course, this is something I can only do on monthly occasions when there are scheduled events
-Learning languages
and some from my friends:
-home-brewing beer
-growing your own food in a backyard garden/pigpen/chicken coop, which lends itself to composting as well
-tennis
-Pottery
-
Join a hobby class. I recommend pottery, cooking, acting and misc art. Why? Because 90% of people attending those classes are chicks, and some of those are hot chicks.
-
We have a winner!
-
Dress in ragged and dirty clothing. Sit in the street. Panhandle while telling people to get a job.
EDIT:Learning Java as a second language.
-
Learn origami (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origami).
EDIT: Or, if you feel slightly insane and happen to have a secret lab under your room: http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-Your-Own-Black-Hole/
-
Start homebrewing. Fun hobby, and you don't *have* to drink it.
-
... Latin dance?
It's what I do with my free time. :D
My word!
Salsa, bachatta, zouk (lambada), pachanga, cha-cha-cha are very entertaning dances.
-
I'm only any good at cha-cha and salsa, though... (and the Passo Doble)
-
MMMMmmmMMmMmmmmmmm....
Salsa....
*Gurgle* Drool *gurgle*
-
With
nachos. YES.
-
Anything that needs lots of thought, try economy or goverment. I personaly am a junior communist, it's fun and challenging to think up situations. Learn about stocks, or master minipulation

Hey, communism unfortunately has a bad image. Stalin's and Mao's fault, though.

Must have a look at those. I'm largely self-taught, and I bet I'm doing something wrong (for now ignoring gross anachronisms like using galvanised steel or anodised copper wire. :)).

There's no anodised copper, either etched copper or Enamaled copper :D
But yeah, it IS a good hobby, and gives bad-ass costumes too.
-

The latter. Mixing up my chain mail with my plate mail, which involved copper-colour anodised aluminium "hammer-finished" sheets, of the kind used to decorate wall heaters. Cut in the right way and carefully teased into the right shape, looks sufficiently like a breastplate for a particular costume, while being ultra-lightweight. (Which is an advantage, when you've got a dense (8-1) copper ringmail on as well. :))

Oh, and the fact that it plain doesn't work and all the communist leaders ever have been bloodthirsty lunatics.

No, Mao and Stalin have been the bloodthirsty lunatics.
Oh, and Pol Pot, Ceseau, Tito, Ho Chi Minh, and all the Kims.
Commies hardly have a good track record. Oh, and it still doesn't work.
-
Tito wasn't *that* bad.
-
*Bush* too :P
Bad people are everywhere.

Could always go mountain biking. I hear englands got some good mountains.
*stifles laugh*
Its a fairly exhillarating sport tbh.
-
That would require excercise.
I am a nerd. (Not fat, however. opposite end of the spectrum)
Warhammer convertin' has hooked me.
Making all my guys do awesome shit.
Dioramas........
-
GIT YO SELF FLAMES O' WAR!!!
OR SUMTIN!!!!
NOT REALLY!!!
I NEED A CAMERA!!!
-
I suggest bboying. Not only is it healthy, but it's rewarding to push yourself physically, and it's pretty satisfying to learn new moves.
-
May I suggest model planes (http://www.quietrcflying.com/)?
Now, if the awesomeness of flying things doesn't convince you, you might go for RC cars instead. From there, you could make a remote control one of these... which would be awesome. The technology is around to make the VTOL dropships too, if you're up for some modification you can make them drop things even.

My suggestion: Parkour.
1. A very obscure sport.
2. Guaranteed to get you instant respect from everybody.
3. Little requirements on muscular build - except that which you gain doing it.
4. Easy to learn.
5. Popular amongst nerds.
6. [con] Requires excessive amounts of balls to progress past novice.
7. Popular in UK.
8. Popular in US.
9. Popular everywhere.
V: I live in the country. In Australia. And I still manage to do it. That's skill there. Also, technically, it's not only for
urban environments.

10. Crappy if your living in the county 'cept your going to the city for it or do some kind of... Forest parkour?
Also, it's a trend sport, which is usually bad.
-
If you don't live in an urban area, parkour is relatively difficult to learn in a useful manner. Rural parkour just doesn't look as good, and I'd imagine that you get less opportunity to do some common routines. An alternate way of learning a similar moveset would be tricking. Interestingly enough, tricking also has links with bboying--that is, you can use tricking moves in bboying sets, so you'd be getting a sort of a two for one bonus there.
The con, as with everything awesome, is that you require practice. And yeah, learning flip moves like gainers and wall runs takes a severe amount of guts.
-
What time will you give to the hobby?
-
Quite a lot, most of the weekend.
At the moment now though, convertin' and paintin' some warhammer models has captivated me.
It is glorious.
-
Blah, Parkour was around before it was cool... it will be uncool again, and then it will become cool because nobody knows what it is... the cycle of popularity.
-
Like every single other cool hobby. People stop listening to certain types of music because it becomes too "mainstream". People have even stopped playing 40k tabletop because it was too popular, and are now starting it up again.
Thus is the curse of the Niche hobby.

The difference being that Games Workshop is considered akin to the "Microsoft of the Tabletop Wargaming World" to a large majority of wargamers (with disproportionate pricing to match), and as such there will always be large number (I know a friend who insists it's a silent majority) of self-styled Real Gamers who would never, ever consider anything GW to be Cool ever again (even those of them who started off with Traveller, or one of the other early adoptions).
Obviously, it's a big 'standard', (compared with all those other numerous gaming systems, e.g. DBA/DBM, and the nearly infinite number of scenarios from prehistory, through ancient and modern history to modern day and, wherever you might place them fantasy-past, present and futures of various kinds technological and/or magical) and the shops are not so much the "little pokey bookshop" kind that you might go to for reasonably priced flock or stranded grass, 'lichen', 1/300th scale waterloo figures, 1/25th WWII vehicles, role-playing guides and whatavyer. Which is yet another reason to compare them to MS.
Personally, I play 40K, but they're not my figures. I turn up every week and we may be playing a 40K campaign, of sorts (in 'our' universe, the Squats are still around), or then again it could be one of the many other systems. Every now and then we try a homegrown WWI trench warfare game, and every time it ends up as a "slaughtered in our hundreds of thousands" scenario, regardless of how we rijig the rules... which probably proves something about the nature of attacking "their trench" by climbing out of "your trench" and advancing across No Man's Land. But most games are not as predictable as that.
-
DnD.
Awesome fun with good players and a good DM with a good game universe and more improvising than an extended prog rock concert.
-
Already do :P
To an extent at least, unfortunately there arent many players near me, so i have just to read the lore and Min-Max and shit, i used to run a capaign, but it died due to bad planning...
-
I think a natural suggestion is to get into robotics, you're already learning C++ which is great.
check this little gem out:
http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/ez430-f2013.html
this low power micro controller can run for several YEARS on just two AA batteries. the target board ( the brains of your robot) only cost 4$ each and are easily programmed in C via the USB stick linked above.
the skys the limit for these things, right now im using a more robust version for my 4th year design project at my engineering school and should have a marketable product by late next year.
the only additional skills you will need to pick up is some soldering and technical document reading to figure out what components do, but I'm willing to help you out with whatever questions you have.
tl;dr you can make a basic robot with a distance sensor so that it drives away from you for about 15$ add about 30$ one time for the programmer, and 20+ for soldering gear.
-
Y'know, i've often contemplated creating a little robot...
Obviously it'd be modelled after a chair, it just HAS to happen.
-
Read up on physics, astrophysics in particular. I just LOVE reading and learning about it, space, and survival in space. As a matter of fact i plan on being Astrophysicist.
-
Hehehe.
I also want to be a physicist.
However, theoretical physics, in fact. Or at least nuclear :P
Also...
Damn, I want to make a robot!
-
Theoretical physics and robotics are surprisingly boring. Once you start taking control systems, you'll know why I say so :(
-
Coming up with interesting solutions to problems is what makes it interesting, like any project if you make something boring then its going to be boring. I made a little robot with a basic motion sensor and buzzer, if it sees something move nearby it screams and tries to run away :D

Have you seen China lately? I'd hardly say democracy works.
As for the topic, maybe model houses? We have a class at my high school where you design a house on the computer following legal restrictions and then build them on a small scale, it actually looks like a lot of fun.

Because China is a really wonderful example of democracy.
